Here are other versions for the cover of Drop Dead by Lily Chu. John Cho will voice the male lead for the audiobook, which is set to be released on August 1, 2024. Paperback/ebook will be released in spring 2025.
Illustrated by Leni Kauffman, which I also found out made the cover for The Worst Wonderful Time by Evie Browning. And that had to be inspired by Selfie (2014)!

Young me: I hope those celebrity couple don't break up!
Older me: I hope this book cover illustrator never ends working with this author.

I looked up the special edition cover you mentioned and.....oh boy. It's honestly unfortunate how they're trying to shoehorn Ali into a very specific "she writes romance but it's contemporary!!! It's for the normies!! It has a cartoon cover!" niche even when she's writing paranormal stuff. I rly love the idiosyncrasies of genre fiction and trad is just consistently like "ok but what if we ruined it"
Lol, look up Leni Kauffman's statement about it to get angrier.
The thing is that the cover honestly looks like a YA contemporary, and the original cover was good? And communicated exactly the tone the book set: paranormal romance for people who want to try the genre, still a solid PNR, a lil spooky.
If you read Bride thinking you're getting a contemporary romance (and by God lol, a YA/NA contemporary at that) you will be shocked. There is blood and gore and politics and mysteries, and it's honestly a lot racier than anything else Ali has written. And it's not... vanilla........
As I've said before, I think this is her best book, AND it sets up for a sequel/spinoff (lol I subscribe to her newsletter and she introduced as "my first (and maybe last) paranormal" and I'm like... Ali.... I literally saw you setting up a new couple in real time). I think PNR honestly comes more naturally to her than contemporary, and I say that as someone who thinks she writes a good contemporary.
I think this is largely a trend issue and a publisher issue more than anything else, but in the discussion of the cover I find it weird that people don't seem to want to admit that it's also just *not well made*. It's not a good cover. If that were for a contemporary romance, it would still be a shoddily made cover.

For Never & Always (CBR16 #1)
I’m feeling a little rusty in my reviewing skills and kicking myself for not getting this specific review written when I finished the book because I had thoughts and now, I have fewer. I should probably start by saying that I really, truly enjoyed For Never & Always by Helena Greer in much the same way I did reading her previous book Season of Love. For Never & Always is also a queer romance…

“A small town waitress and a Hollywood star’s worlds collide in this new romance by Ashley Herring Blake”
Another new Ashley Herring Blake book is coming out in May of next year and the cover art is perfect 😍 I love any cover art Leni Kauffman does and she is so good at bringing Blake’s characters to life. Between the new holiday book, Make the Season Bright, which comes out in October, and this book set to release in the spring, Ashley is spoiling us and I feel blessed because she is one of my favourite authors.

GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO DID THINGS LIKE THIS
Mine from the top of my head: Charlie Bowater, Leni Kauffman, Lilith Saur
controversial take, but if I’m looking for books to read and the cover is drawn by Charlie Bowater I’m immediately ignoring it
Not because I hate her art, I think it’s lovely, but because I know what kind of books she draws for and the typical quality of content

Sorry maybe I am not searching for it efficiently enough but where can I find Leni Kauffman's statement about Bride’s alternative cover?
She had it on her Insta and reposted it on her Twitter.
It was basically her running down how the cover wasn't all her idea, she got a brief from the publisher and/or author that laid out the details, and she made it, and hate is bad!!! And how would people feel if their favorite authors got hate???
(The answer: people backlash against authors who snap back at critiques, and I frankly don't think Leni is above that any more than they are. And I didn't see any "hate" against her--not saying it didn't happen, but I saw a lot of rational critique, not even of her work so much as it was about the trends and the general issues with the APPROACH to the cover.)
Here's the thing... Most commissioned artists do work off a "brief" and have for... ever. Michelangelo had a "brief" of sorts when he painted the Sistine Chapel lol. Of course, some artists have more freedom within instructions. But when someone is paying you for a work, they very rarely just go "hey! Go crazy!" They tell you what you want, and you work within those parameters. The QUALITY of the work does depend on you, and Leni's work is very samey stylistically and I think people are beginning to notice that. Which they would, because Leni gets a lot of work, and she is popular, and she is much more KNOWN than most cover artists. She could be more anonymous--but it's clear that she doesn't want to be. That's FINE. That is HUSTLING. I respect THE HUSTLE.
What I don't respect is people whining when their artwork gets critiqued, because no matter what you make--visual art, books, music, poetry--if you are making something for public consumption, not everyone is going to like it.
(I also have an issue with her throwing Ali and the publisher under the bus there, because A) the publisher definitely had more say about the final product than Ali let us be real, why bring her into it even if she liked and advised on it B) it's still Leni's work C) it's just unprofessional to me, and that takes away from me respecting the hustle.)
