everyone go watch leila's brothers if you like movies about families loving and fighting each other, socio-political commentary about iranian society, flawed, funny and glorious working class characters and possibly the most interesting female lead character i have watched on cinema in a while. perhaps it's best characteristic is that there are no lingering shorts playing voyeur on the privations visited on the characters due to poverty and eventually american sanctions on iran.

4. Favourite movie?

i think this was a really different year in my movie watching history, i actually attended two film festivals. lot more weird films. i wish i made time to attend more of mar's film club screenings! funnily enough my favourite was the very much not festival bait very much structurally a "masala film" – kaala by pa ranjith. it was really really good and exceeded my expectations.
