Tell me any thoughts you have on your Trespasser fic?

oh gosh! i have so many thoughts about this story, so many directions i want to go in it. i want to see what a healed inbar looks like, how that gap of time between dai and trespasser allowed her to really grow in the ways that chasing corypheus did not allow. any time you write a relationship of any degree between the inquisitor and dorian, you have that bittersweet separation, and with the added element of iron bull in the middle of them, there is a lot of me that is very eager to get back to their post-coryphipiss lives. i want to see what the future looks like for them, and how the events of trespasser both usher that in, and interrupt it. i toyed around with a lot of very self-indulgent ideas regards their chosen family situation, and i am still undecided as to whether or not i actually want to do any of it. time will tell, and there is no need to hurry on it.

i also want to see if i can fit in an actual redemption arc, or even a moment of it, for sebastian, since he has his fingers in so much of inbar's story. it feels unfair to him, as a character i truly love digging into the nooks and crannies (good and bad) of, to leave him hanging to wallow in his (very large) mistakes, and i want to really let that peripetea following hawke's (alleged) death have its way with him. he said a lot of terrible things following adamant, and i can't let that be the last word on it.

and then there's anders. oh, anders, where are you? how are you managing? he's been so silent and absent since leaving miriei behind. even if there's no room for a proper narrative arc (and i don't want to over-stuff the story) i want to set up a third act for him in my universe. i touched on it a bit in a warden's penitence, but it was an in and out sort of thing because i didn't want to make the story about him.

what will probably happen is there will be another story that ties up all of the mess that da2 made in my story canon, because digging into sebastian and anders re: hawke is honestly too much to ask of one story that, honestly, is not about them. mirei deserves better.

i very very much do intend to go back and write this eventually, because i had so ding dang much fun writing inbar's story, especially the relationship(s) between inbar, iron bull, and dorian, and i love them all so much. i genuinely miss the, because i am pretty gosh darned proud of how i wrote their little triangle. it's the healthiest relationship i've ever written lol. but, two things have to happen before i can do this, the first is replay trespasser, which requires me to finally switch all my ea games over to their steam-clone, and i have to stop being mad at bioware so i can get in a dragon age headspace again.

Mhez has 4 younger half-sisters who, when he was younger, he considerd his closest friends and who considered him back as 'sure is that tall kid that stands there at dinner picking fights with dad .' their relationship gets better as they grow older and funnily stronger after he 🪓 💥 peepaw, as he makes them his sort-of council when he takes over the stronghold

i've been a huge fan of adara for a long time, even as i have fallen out of this fandom, and all of this and more is what really makes her such a fantastic, deep, and lovely character.

question time!

what is your favorite trait about adara? like obviously you love her, she's YOURS, but what is it about her that makes you tear up the carpet with your teeth because it amazes you?

She’s such a stubborn little gremlin sometimes and I didn’t quite realize how much at first until hindsight, reading over old stuff, lol. She gets an idea in her head or falls into some odd line of thinking that she just cannot and will not be dissuaded from. Sometimes it is so funny but sometimes it is so sad. Like “girl why are you thinking that way about yourself or how the world works” “I know what I’m doing” “…okay.” She prides herself on being SO reasonable and SO practical, and she usually IS, but the times she isn’t are so fascinating and funny to me.

@ammoniteflesh wrote Adara meeting the Watchman of Night when she was seriously injured and of course had Adara threatening to kill him when she was, in every way but literally, a disgruntled kitten in a towel burrito at the vet’s office. What are you thinking, girl. It was so perfect.

I love her for all the reasons but her little streaks of cognitive dissonance are what have me rotating her like a rotisserie chicken for years and years.

I read this story long ago all in one sitting. It absolutely gripped me, tugged at my heartstrings, and wouldn't let me go. A Cadash/Solas/Varric Tethras rare pair, you have to give this a try.

Rating: E Pairing: Female Cadash/Solas, Female Cadash/Varric, Varric/Solas Chapters: 13/13 Length: 42,657 words Summary: Maria Cadash hung up the Inquisitor's mantle for the Viscountess' crown, but she's unable to stop her desperate and impossible struggle to stop Fen'Harel from destroying the world both her husband and daughter inhabit. The fact Varric, Maria, and Solas are all madly in love with each other just means she may have enough of an edge to win this game.

There's some excellent introspection from the Inquisitor and a bittersweet but somft and heartfelt ending between Cullen and his love.

Mer's Rec: this is a little slice of interpersonal relationships that beautifully captures Hawke's spirit! It starts with some platonic Hawke & Varric, perfectly encapsulating the exhaustion both of them feel after HLTA, and transitions smoothly into the heart-tugging reunion between Hawke and a frustrated Fenris who's very much in love.

Charade Amell & Carver Hawke & Female Hawke | T | 6749 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: Hawke’s teeth glinted when she grinned, except for the gap of her missing left dogtooth. Funny how they did that, even in such poor lighting. Glinting. Hawke barely seemed real. They’ve gone on a mission or two together since that initial, embarrassingly disastrous meeting, and it was still shocking that the woman lived up—if not surpassed—her nearly legendary status. Compared to the other missions Charade led with the Jennies, this was somewhat easier than her normal fare. But while Hawke was a known figure, and by technicality kin, Charade still didn’t know her. Mer's Rec: Okay, I'm admittedly biased toward this piece, because it was a gift for me as part of the 2023 Platonic Ideal Exchange. That being said, it is an INCREDIBLE work of sibling dynamics and I think of it whenever I think about Charade Amell. Havvke explores the relationship between Charade as a Red Jenny, Carver as a Grey Warden, and Hawke as...Hawke, in a beautiful web of complicated choices and found family. Over a year later, it still holds up as one of the best exchange gifts I've ever received.

Alistair/Female Warden, Alistair & Anora Mac Tir, Alistair & Warden's Mabari | T | 3042 words | No Archive Warnings Apply Author's Summary: Alistair and the Warden are no longer together, but they still exchange letters - through Dog. Alistair struggles to find happiness in his life as king, but he isn't entirely alone. Mer's Rec: I read this one just recently and oh my GOODNESS it both made me laugh and also pulled at my heartstrings. Leggy alters the canon breakup between a King Alistair & the Warden to be somehow even more heartbreaking and the way that he talks to Dog is just so essentially Alistair, I could hear every line in his voice. Add to that several well done bits between Alistair & Anora and this piece absolutely delivers on the "sad" and "heartache" in the additional tags.

Female Lavellan/Cullen Rutherford | T | 1768 words | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Author's Summary: The first time she tells him she loves him is the time he needs to hear it the most Mer's Rec: I love this piece for the intermingling of angst and fluff between Lavellan and Cullen. It leads in with one of the better descriptions of nightmare panic that I've seen and the way that Lavellan grounds Cullen from it is smooth and heartfelt, as is his reaction to her comfort. It caps off with some sweet fluff and a taste of human/elf relationships dynamics, for which I am a sucker, and which end the fic on soft, heartfelt note.

12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?

nah. not for fic. with fic i'm happy enough to give it a few readthroughs for anything glaring, but honestly i do fic for free and it's meant to be easy and fun. with very rare exception i'm fine if a few things slip through. if it's a character voice i'm new with or if i have a question about characterization, i might have someone give it a look, but not often. i only bother with the extra steps for original fic that i plan to submit places professionally. idk it's just what i do and i think it works well for me.

18. Do you typically post multi-chapters as you write, or finish it all and then start posting? Would you like to change your posting method?

typically i post as i go. the only fic i ever completed before posting was a queen's regrets (dragon age), because i wrote it all in under a week in a state of hyperfixation and it honestly came out faster than i could have kept up with if i had gone the chapter-by-chapter route. i don't really have the patience to/don't care enough to finish most fics before i post them. the instant gratification is half the fun of it for me, along with finding out where the story is going alongside the reader. also a queen's regrets was written at a very unhealthy pace in a burst of severe mental health problems*, and i prefer not to put myself in that position again. which the wait-to-post method of posting tends to do to me. like, cool for people who can do that without harming their mental health. i can't. i don't really see that changing anytime soon.

*turns out a lot of mental health professionals consider 30k in under a week to be an alarming pace! and it was in fact included in the diagnostic criteria for my major disorder.

Ch20: "Hand to Hand Combat"

“How you holdin’ up, Boss?” Bull planted his ax’s staff in the mud, leaning on it for balance as he crouched down to my level, examining me with that armor-piercing eye of his. “Got another fight in you?” He made the question sound casual, almost joking. But I heard the concern hidden beneath. I raised an eyebrow. “I don’t have much choice, do I?” “Not about the fight, no.” He tilted his head toward me slightly. A minuscule gesture that said much. I looked up, considering him. Even crouched, he wasn’t quite at eye level. His bare chest was covered in cuts and nicks. None were actively bleeding. If I hadn’t just seen it happen, I’d have a hard time believing he’d led a charge through a horde of undead. But then I saw how hard he was gripping his ax, how his weight was sinking it slowly deeper into the mud. He hid it well, but he was just as exhausted as the rest of us. I curled into myself, hoping any shivering the others might notice would be attributed to the damp, and I asked Bull in a quivering voice, “Do you remember your plan for confronting the Blades of Hessarian?” His wry grin didn’t move an inch, but somehow it looked more sombre. Whatever he read in my expression, my body language, he seemed to take the deeper meaning behind the question. He clapped me on the shoulder and rose, leaving me to my thoughts. I watched the others scattered about the small gatehouse yard. Some chattering, some quiet. All looked almost as undead as the horde still straining against the gate. But the longer I watched, the more I noticed they were stealing glances at me. Because they knew what I knew. One way or another, it was all going to come down to me.
