Reverse Engineer

Task: "Take apart three of your favorite games and break them down into their components. Of each game ask What are its hooks? Its core mechanics? Interface issues? Metaphors? Is it intended for replay or as a relatively linear experience? How might the designers have evolved this game? Does the game have obvious ancestors or relatives? Does the game have imaginative fore-mothers in other media or in the "real world?"

I have chosen to reverse engineer Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Clue (the Board Game), and Hide-n-Seek. 

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is an action-adventure game that focuses on the main character, Link, as he travels to defeat the main antagonist, Bellum, who has kidnapped Link's friend Tetra. Link has help from the supporting character, Captain Linebeck, through the use of Linebeck's ship (the S.S. Linebeck) as well as a fairy named Celia. This game is a direct sequel from a previous game LOZ: the Wind Waker.

Throughout Phantom Hourglass, Link "explores the world to find new items, information, and allies to help him save his friend Tetra and defeat the antagonist Bellum." There are two main action-themes throughout the game including sailing between islands and exploring the islands on foot. While exploring the islands, Link discovers items including a boomerang, bow, shovel, bow, and bombs. 

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was created specifically for Nintendo DS gaming devices so the gamer could fully utilize the stylus-to-touchscreen environment--"The touch screen is used to show the main gameplay, used to control Link, or to solve puzzles, while the upper screen is mostly used as a map and menu." The player is encouraged to use the microphone to grab the attention of characters within the game as well as blow air to activate switches. 

For me, the hook of the game was the explorative nature--where I could direct Link wherever I would like him to go (within the perimeters of the game, of course). Also, I enjoyed finding hidden gems as well as defeating minor bad-guys!  

  Clue

Clue is a murder-mystery themed board game that has players strategically move   one of the six characters, moving from room to room collecting clues to deduce which character murdered the perpetual victum, Dr. Black. Players are to guess which character, with what weapon, and within what room the murder took place. 

Clue is formally called Cluedo that originated from Leeds, England in 1949 by Anthony Pratt, a solicitor's clerk and children's entertainer. Currently the game is created by Hasbro, an American company that had acquired Parker Brothers & Waddington (the games original publisher).

"The game's current equipment consists of a board which shows the rooms, corridors and secret passages of an English country house called Tudor Mansion, although previously named variously as Tudor Close or Tudor Hall, and in some editions Boddy Manor or Boddy Mansion." The game includes several colored playing pieces to represent characters (Scarlett, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Misses Peacock, etc) as well as miniature murder weapon props, one or two six-sided dice, three sets of cards (including rooms, weapons, and murder suspects), a Solution Cards envelope to contain one card from each set of cards, and a Detective's Notes pad on which are printed lists of rooms, weapons and characters, so players can keep detailed notes during the game.

The hook of this game for me is pretending to be a detective--gathering clues and trying to figure out who is the murr-DAH-rer (murderer) as well as trying tricking other players and trying to outsmart them (figure out the 3 categories before them). I find the game an exercise of deduction and makes me imagine being in Sherlock Holmes's shoes. I find this game a classic and I sure can't give up the chance to play it!

  Hide-n-Seek

Hide and Seek is a classic children's game that involves multiple players with one player 'seeking' one or multiple other players. The 'seeker' closes his/her eyes for a brief period. The seeker opens his/her eyes and tries to find the 'hiders.' The name of the game is to NOT be the first hider found--whoever is found first is automatically the next seeker; whoever is the last wins that round. In other forms of the game, hider try to run back to 'home base' to be safe--if all the hiders return to home base before getting caught, the seeker stays the same in the next round.  

The excitement of this game is the anticipation on when the seeker will find you. The feeling of achievement when you are the last person to be found is rewarding and provides a motivation for finding clever spots to hide--given what environment the game is being played in.
