Het kortst daglicht is weer geweest en daar gaan we weer. Heel wat planten trekken zich niets aan van de winter en groeien en bloeien door als het maar niet te hard vriest. Of het helpt bij het voortbestaan? Wie weet. Het is echter wel kenmerkend voor het voortbestaan dat er veel genetische variatie in zit. Grote leeuwenbek. Komt uit het zuiden… Bloeit in december! That's a fun thing to try!

In Dutch Marquis Snapdragon would be Markies Leeuwenbek (which just like in Finnish translates directly to lion's maw).

Laistrygon & Antiphates = the exact same

Enigma Beast could be translated as 'Raadselbeest', which I think sounds rather dope.

Most of my own characters have made up fantasy word names, can't really translate them to anything :P

I'm just tickled by how Marquis Snapdragon's Finnish name is Markiisi Leijonankita. (his full name being Isidor Leijonankita, I don't often mention his first name oops) Same meaning, same flower, but the Finnish name for "leijonankita" can be directly translated as "lion's maw". haha

Laistrygon's name would pretty much remain the same... (fun fact back when I first came up with this name for him, I was planning to spell the name "Laestrygone" and honestly I prefer the spelling I went with, ultimately, haha. the "ae" is a pain...)

Antiphates -> Antifates (we use "f" in place of "ph" in loanwords that contain that sound)

Enigma Beast.... that's a tricky one. Arvoituspeto? lol

like, man, being able to translate my characters' names def lends itself more to their fairy tale vibe.

also, because I'm curious, how would you translate their names to your native language? Do you have characters whose names are easily translatable?

Triple homicide, two adults, one child, killed in the utmost brutal and unconventional way. The investigators said and said and said ‘This could only be the work of a mutant!’ To the point where every mutant, every suspected mutant on the island of new york was round up, tested, against their will. The District Attorney was under immense pressure from the community to get the killer off the streets, and his opponent was doing more to do so than him. They needed to make a conviction. When Jessica tested positive for the strain of genes dictating the powers of the murderer, they locked her up faster than anyone else.

Hailey, infuriated by her sisters wrongful conviction, worked for two years to get her out, to exonerate her. But by the time she was released, the prison system already done massive damage. Two years. Two years spent in solitary. Jessica just came out different. She didn't have a big going home party, didn't have cake, didn't smile for the cameras, all she wanted, and what she desperately needed, was to leave the community that convicted her.

Her father kept some money coming as she stayed in Amsterdam on a special visa, untill she got her working visa at a florist. She didnt get everything she needed. To be honest she probably needed more than just money to keep herself afloat, probably needed intense medical treatment. Jessica barely talked on a good day. What would therapy do to help? She just needed Sovereignty. Needed independence. Needed to be safe. Needed to not be looked at like she was some sick sick murderer.

She gets home exactly at 3:45pm. at the exact same time as her neighbor. She kept her head down as she fumbled for her keys in her book bag, a new plant under her arm, but she knew, she could just tell, that he was looking at her. Her head tilts and the black curtain of her hair splits slightly, revealing her frightened and slightly dead gaze. Did he know? would he send her back to solitary? 

The door gives as it unlocks and she passes through the threshold fast, slamming the door shut behind her and locking six out of the ten locks she had installed on the door. Her heart slowly stopped fluttering. Now, where would this new leeuwenbek thrive in this old 1910′s apartment of hers...

Vlasbekje of vlasleeuwenbek, Linaria vulgaris is een vrij algemene plant die op arme zandgrond groeit. Ook op stenige plaatsen, in wegbermen en zelfs op daken voelt ie zich thuis. Als er veel concurrentie komt verdwijnt ie weer. het is een typische pionier die in tuinen het best lang kan uithouden, zeker als de grond in de buurt wat open hodt. Hij zaait zich dan ook weer uit. Hij kan wel 60cm…
