One thing Kaz Rowe does, which is not unique amongst youtubers, but still annoys me, is that they will tell you who said a quote but not where they got the quote from. For example this quote is simply cited "Le Chevalier d'Eon".

Misgendering aside this doesn't tell us where or when d'Eon said this. Or whether this is a direct quote or a translation of something she wrote in French. You might think this information would be in the description but no there is just a list of sources not specifying where any quote or particular piece of information is from.

Now in spite of Kaz Rowe's lack of proper citation I can tell you that this quote is actually a translation from Gary Kates book Monsieur d'Eon Is a Woman. Kates citation for this quote is "Préface général de l'éditeur de Paris, qui en 1798 ...," Papers of d'Eon, Brotherton Collection, University of Leeds Library, Box 7, p. 59.

There isn't anything wrong with Rowe using Kates rather than tracking down the original source from the University of Leeds but I do think they should have cited where they got this quote from. There is no mention that this is a translation by Gary Kates. And this isn't just about crediting Kates for his work but also about historical accuracy. Understanding that this is a translation is important. Knowing when and where d'Eon said this is important.

When it comes to a quote I can easily write out that quote and paste it into google and voilà its from Kates book!

But when it comes to claims made in Rowe's own words I have no idea which of their sources they got that information from. In a section of Rowe's video where they explain their choice to use they/them pronouns for d'Eon (in spite of the fact that d'Eon used she/her pronouns) Rowe states:

They also disliked wearing women's clothes in general, as well as the narrow social restrictions that came with being a woman. In one letter, they described themself as a prisoner of war. And in another letter, they described their situation as being forced to take on womanhood.

These are some pretty significant claims so I'd be incredibly interested in what Rowe's sources are. I know d'Eon talked about disliking women's formal dress and preferring women's informal dress, she wrote; "The informal dress suited me very well, but when I had to wear the formal dress with accessories and jewels, it was a great torment for me". (translated in Dressing d'Eon by Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell) But to say she "disliked wearing women's clothes in general" seems to me a bit of an overstatement.

While I'm lost as to which letter in particular d'Eon talked about being "forced to take on womanhood" the words "prisoner of war" certainly rang a bell for me. My initial assumption was that the "letter" that Rowe was referring to was probably not a letter at all but d'Eon's autobiography in which she writes:

It was then that a new theater of confusion and glory opened before me and swallowed me alive in my skirts at Versailles, where I was kept as an honorable prisoner of war in the household of Madame and Mesdemoiselles Genet, ladies-in-waiting to the Queen, who endeavoured to have me emulate their dress, their work, their conduct, and their virtues. They had to please both their mistress, who was a sovereign, and their husbands, who dominated them. For I who have neither husband, nor master, nor mistress, I would like to enjoy the privilege of obeying only myself and good sense.

However considering that Rowe doesn't cite The Maiden of Tonnerre as a source its probably actually from Kates who writes:

A few weeks later, d’Eon’s mood had grown even worse. “Don't remind me, Madame,” he wrote to his closest new friend, the Duchesse de Montmorency-Bouteville, “about the errors of my youth, nor the happy follies of my military career, for the problems found in the midst of a war were more pleasing to me than the tranquillity of being in the midst of the Court during peacetime. In actuality, I live here in the respectable home of Mme Genet as an honorable prisoner of war.” Although d’Eon wanted to be known as a woman, he was having trouble defining the kind of woman he might become. Patriarchal France was intent on forcing him to accept a narrow gender role that meant giving up his military and political career.

Or maybe Rowe is thinking of the following conversation between d'Eon and Marie Antoinette that Kates includes in his book:

“Madame,” d’Eon responded, “today I realize that the death of my past condition gives life and glory to my present state and to the future for eternity. Allow me to swear that I will remain a prisoner of war in skirts, in faith and in homage to the law. For faith is the first theological virtue; without it we are but a drum echo in the air.”

Or perhaps Rowe is thinking of something else entirely there really isn't any way for me to know because they don't clearly cite a source.

None of this is unique to Kaz Rowe. This criticism could be made about numerous video essayists. Its a symptom of pop history content in general where people who do not have the expertise in a topic attempt to summarise it for people who will likely never do any further research into it. Rowe doesn't have to cite their sources in a comprehensive way because their fans are never going to do in-depth research on d'Eon in the first place. So they can say that d'Eon "described their situation as being forced to take on womanhood" in a "letter" without ever saying which letter they're referring to.

Ending of fionna and cake

I liked the Overall ending, even if i have some questions like died betty at the end ( blow herself up )

However i am a little sad that the other realitys didnt get an ending. The Others just apperead out of nothing with no explanation and we dont know what happened to the vampire world ( the king mentioned something of beeing interested in dimension travel so i thought it would leed to something ) we also dont know what happened to farmworld finn. Maybe a season 2 could start with the explanation that crossovers are now possible and what the dimensions did afterwards.

I also thought simon choice would be a little more multiversal important. Since his death was the catalist for so many horrible things i believed his crown choice was necessary in some capacity ( just not the insane bit ).

Now a personal nitpick about the crown:

I hate it if i accotiote a power which only exists once, to a Person who earned it in some regard by Paying for it. Only to have another suddenly get this power and have no respect for the first Person who got it or didnt get any setback from it himself. I always feel angry like why do you suddenly get this power too, my character feels less now. It is a personal Feeling so i dont critic the show for doing it with giving the crown power to Others. But i hate it.

First gunter becomes the ice thing and gets the castle and everthing ice king build. He shows no setback like unlikebility or insanity and everyone loves him. He even got a wife. Worse is that simon gets this way conected to the ice kings actions but not his archivments ( staying so long sane, beeing a good ruler, building castle, having magic knowledge, wizard atifacts, conecctions to Others... ) it feels like they tried to replace ice king with ice thing ( which is what they wanted ) so they just gave him everything without earning it.

Fin as ice king i liked since the insanity was there and we got to know the crown likes simon, making him important even if someone else had the same power as him.

But than came the vampire king who got no setback at all ( even finn and bubblegum couldnt control the madness and they are the good impodied and an actual elemental ). Having the cost just erased for him.

And the ice dog from the future where there could be a mention like " the crowns owner died ages ago so the power got weaker ( ice thing ) and is now seperated ( jewels are not together ) and beeing misused. giving at least some credit to simon.

Like he sacrificed so much for everyone and only got ice power in return. Only for everyone else to just get it without issue ( even other ice elemental ) or some mention that it is stronger for simon in some way. Even though we got a good oppertunity with the multiverse to make it so. Simply say simon was always supposed to be the owner of the crown or it likes him the most. Just something to make simon the only one truelly connected to the ice power / crown even if we see Others use it.

It is a personal opinion and not really something the writers had to make. But since it was such a good oppertunity and i really hate this i wanted to mention it hear by writing my opinion of the ending.

I started playing Fallen London recently and I’d thought I’d introduce my character/OC Clara Lewis! I’ve only just started so I don’t know much about the game but I thought I’d introduce her.

Some facts about Clara :

Her birthplace was London, but she grew up from the age of seven on the surface with her maternal grandparents and uncle Thomas in Leeds whilst her parents worked and lived in London. She’s still close with her parents and knows they’re just trying to do what’s best for her.

Her maternal grandfather was a magister and a Lord in Leeds. The family fell almost to destitution after the fall of London.

She is half English, half Scottish. Scottish on her fathers side, English on her mothers. Her father was a medical student when he met her mother, shortly after London fell.

Clara inherited her red hair from her father, and her mother’s green eyes. In fact she looks almost like an exact copy of her mother facially, just with less freckles. She is 5’6 in height an inch taller than her mother.

Clara’s real surname isn’t Lewis, she took that surname, her maternal grandmother’s maiden name, so that her brother’s killers wouldn’t make a connection.

She wants to be a detective although author is another option, her mother used to tell her stories when she was little before she was sent to the surface.

If I don’t get the subscription, I plan on her falling in love and marrying the jewel thief, which will be hilarious if she becomes a detective.

She suffers nightmares due to the stuff she’s seen in London.

Clara wanted to escape something from the surface, but she never mentions what. She was escaping from an arranged marriage her grandfather (as her guardian) was setting up to help financially. She took the first opportunity to go to London to escape that predicament. Her mysterious benefactor helped her.

Her ambition is Nemesis. Her older brother Albert whom she was very close with was murdered and she wants to find out the truth. She wants to find out who killed him.

Bertie was a twenty four year old student and has only just started university to become a professor when he was killed.

Clara was seven years old when Bertie was murdered. She remembers her parents trying everything to get the authorities to listen that it was murder, but nothing worked.

It was soon after that she was somehow smuggled up to the surface. After seeing the anguish her parents went through she swore to take justice into her own hands and find the truth.

Funnily enough most of what I just said is a lie, but it’s the lie she’s telling everyone, the truth is….complicated.

What happened to her brother is true.

However, she never ever was on the surface, the people who come after her from the surface, are not actually from the surface. They are….well, people who disagree with her parents.

Her parents didn’t even meet after London Fell, they met before!

She’s essentially lying to protect her family and only a few of her new friends in London know the truth.

Despite wanting revenge for her brother (or rather justice for her brother, revenge on authorities for not listening), she is not a horrible individual. She’s dangerous, sure, but she’s not vindictive or a monster, she’s actually got a reputation of being very kind. But she’s also dangerous.

She prides herself in her observation skills, she’s extremely watchful.

And then 1912, he’s back in America - a carter in Rhode Island - I’m not sure when he came back, except that his youngest daughter was born in Leeds (Yorkshire) in 1916, and he joined the RAF as a storeman in 1918

His wife and their daughter Ivy, age 4 (tho not his older daughter by his first wife, Mary Ellen, age 7, named for her mum, who died in or with complications from childbirth in 1902) followed him to Philadelphia in 1909! He wasn’t just cavorting off!
