I'M VERY CURIOUS what drew you to john oliver?

I've actually been meaning to tell a part of this story, lol.

I first SAW John Oliver when my government teacher decided that Britain's Fallen Soldiers was worth showing to his senior AP class. I've talked about that before and in depth here and elsewhere.

As I mentioned in that post, I was drawn more to Stephen Colbert at first. (Addendum to that above post: I had not watched Strangers with Candy in a while when I said it was still one of my favorite sitcoms. I tried rewatching it recently and... yeeeeeesh it's aged really really poorly.) I ended up more drawn to John after I started listening to The Bugle. That's all true.

However.

I ended up first drawn to John one random weekend day in senior year, watching a TDS rerun of some kind. I don't remember the bit, but I remember that his voice lowered and he spoke a shade darker than normal, and he said something exceptionally sarcastic. In response, my heart straight up ached.

I then distinctly remember thinking "...oh no, you CANNOT be serious, brain. This guy?? This guy. This is the guy we're settling on. This is happening over this guy."

For more context, my family had made national sport of making fun of my "atrocious" taste in men, which included Mackenzie Crook and Michael Emerson. (Both of whom are AMAZING ok I had good taste in men! Weird taste for a teenager sure BUT)

I saw a few more episodes with him in them - and then made the connection that the clip that made me fall in love with TDS and find Colbert Report in the first place had him in it - and I basically gave in. I searched online for more things featuring him, The Bugle came up, aaaaand here we are 15 years later.

So tl;dr, the sound of his voice telling deeply sarcastic jokes drew me in.

(This does remind me of a story I should tell about my sister, lol. Maybe later.)

This blog will be two years old in May of this year (🎊) but I've been a fan of John for about 15 years at this point, and floated around the Daily Show/Colbert Report fandom back in the 2010s.
