If the Hubble Space Telescope’s 2.4 meter mirror were scaled to be large enough for Webb, it would be too heavy to launch into orbit. The Webb team had to find new ways to build the mirror so that it would be light enough – only one-tenth of the mass of Hubble’s mirror per unit area – yet very strong.

The Webb Telescope team decided to make the mirror segments from beryllium, which is both strong and light. Each segment weighs approximately 20 kilograms (46 pounds).

The hexagonal shape allows for a roughly circular, segmented mirror with “high filling factor and six-fold symmetry.” High filling factor means the segments fit together without gaps. If the segments were circular, there would be gaps between them. Symmetry is good because there need only be 3 different optical prescriptions for 18 segments, 6 of each (see above right diagram). Finally, a roughly circular overall mirror shape is desired because that focuses the light into the most compact region on the detectors. A oval mirror, for example, would give images that are elongated in one direction. A square mirror would send a lot of the light out of the central region.

Lee Feinberg, Webb Optical Telescope Element Manager at NASA Goddard explains, “Aligning the primary mirror segments as though they are a single large mirror means each mirror is aligned to 1/10,000th the thickness of a human hair. What’s even more amazing is that the engineers and scientists working on the Webb telescope literally had to invent how to do this.”

Bonding experience

It was a boring Wednesday. The Fairy Friend Group decided to give their fairies a day off and play on their own for the day.

It started off nice, with some movies and snacks and board games. But eventually they ran out of stuff to do, and now they were bored.

Peri had opted to take a nap, dozing on the couch in his parent’s apartment. Cosmo saw this and saw a great opportunity for some quality bonding time with his son. Wanda greatly encouraged the idea, giving her husband a hug.

Right as Peri drifted off into a calm sleep, Cosmo flew over to him, and gently began to trace his fingers along his knees and thighs. He stirred, a small smile gracing his sleepy face.

“Nohoo.. no t’kles…” he mumbled, rolling over.

When Cosmo didn’t stop, eventually his eyes fluttered open. “Hey there son!” Cosmo took him waking as a cue to dig under his knees, causing his giggles to rise.

“Dahad? Whahat ahare yohou dohoing?”

“I’m tickling you! I haven’t in a long time!”

“Wehell stohop!”

“Nuh-uh! I don’t wanna!”

“Uhughh whyhyhy!”

“Because this is fun! Tickle tickle tickle~ kitchie kitchie coo!!”

Peru’s face turned bright red at the baby talk

“Ihim nohOt a chihihild!”

“You’ll always be my baby boy, son~.”

“Dahad!” Cosmo moved up to squeeze his son’s sides, causing his laughter to increase

“Whaaaaat~” Cosmo drawled, feigning cluelessness

“Yohoure Beheing Mehehean!!”

“No I’m not! I’ll show you mean!” He clawed at the purple one’s tummy, causing his laughter to grow in volume a considerable amount.

“NOHOHO! DAHAHAD CUHUHUT IHIT OHOHOUT!”

“Fiiiine~ just one more thing.” He leaned down and blew the biggest raspberry he could muster, causing the other’s laughter to grow frantic for a moment, before slowing down to just remaining giggles.

“Whahat.. was that fohor?”

“Eh, just felt like it! It’s a great father son bonding experience!”

“Ugh, you’re such a dork.”

Despite Peri’s protest, he didn’t really care. He loved his dad, dorkyness and all.
