First class of the semester at OCC today! 14 students is a lot of people! I wanted to share my forge innovation with you all too. I thought of this when I was falling asleep one night... I’ve been earning to improve these forges for a while. Briefly, a blanket insulator like kaowooll or inswool is better than a hard castable insulator. But a catsable is both safe (the fiber insulators can release silica which is very bad to breathe) and more durable. So ideally you want both. These forges already had a castable lining, but they weren’t super efficient as far as containing heat. So to add the blanket insulator is just bent some sheet metal, but some blanket over the outside of the forge under the sheet, and welded it on. Stick to what you do...or not?

Quite some time ago I went on a business start up course - it was good, I learnt the basics, got some handy tips, plus one important rule.

At the time I was making women’s trousers and thinking about setting up a bespoke service.

One day the guy taking the course was talking about customer expectation and managing growth, and he said the crucial thing in regards to this, was to stick to what you know.

For a long time I’ve stuck to this rule, not blindly - I’ve tested it and found myself wanting and wishing I had taken his advice. However and it’s a big however, what he didn’t mention, which seems silly now, is that you will learn new things and grow. Naturally.

A few weeks back a friend asked me for a favour for a friend of hers. She had a hand knitted babies blanket that needed finishing. She wanted a back put on it to make it warmer, and trim to make it look prettier. This was a sentimental item and I did not want to touch it.

“It’s not what I do” I told her - “these things always take longer than you think” and this and that... I was proper squirming, trying to get out of it. Then she turned up the pressure and pulled out the emotional card “do it for me” - Oooo that’s sneaky. I stood firm and said I really don’t want to mess this up, sorry, but I can’t, I don’t want to. Then she delivered the killer blow “that’s a bit limiting isn’t? only sticking to what you do”.

Huh, I had never really thought of it like that. So I took one more huff and said, “fine, I’ll do it”.

After this, a series of very strange but similar events occurred. A number of people came to me with really random design requests from moulded leather nipple caps (yep you read that right) to teddy bears, to church decorations - I took it as a sign and decided it was time to embrace new challenges.

I’m so glad I did. Firstly, I’ve really enjoyed the new projects and secondly, I’ve realised that this ‘is’ what I do. I make stuff and always have done. I’ve made anything I’ve ever wanted and generally have been pretty good at it. So when a friend of mine came to me with a pretty daunting challenge to transform her very valuable, designer sheepskin coat, into something new and amazing, I thought why not - eeek!

I’m so glad I did. Was it a challenge? Yes! Did it take longer than expected? Yes! was it worth it - totally.

I was so pleased with how it turned out and it did wonders for my confidence. It turns out I am sticking to what I do, I just hadn’t realised what I can do.

It started like this. Ill fitting and a bit too long.

Natasha wanted to wear it inside out. The main feature she really didn’t like, were the sleeves.

So I cut it up - made it shorter, narrowed the arms, removed the pockets and was originally going to add a zip.

But I came up with a much better way to cover the old fastenings and add some serious style. I took some inspiration from my Masai cuff and upcycled my old gold ‘Me and my Girl bag’ to make the statement pockets and cuff detail.

She calls herself my muse - I think she’s right.

Last class today! Not everybody finished their pieces, but some have welders etc at home so they’ll get them done eventually. I had such a great time with these folks and I hope they had a good time in my class! First photo is Griffin, then Bill, then Tracy’s stool.
