I want you to know that your art is very important to me, and I'm very invested in all of the characters I have seen from you. Also, the discussion about Finnish and other languages having gendered words or not has been the last little push to get me to start learning Finnish which I think is fun.
I'm making this a little compilation post of all the language asks I got. Thank you for sharing, this was genuinely really interesting!
#answered#anonymous#long post#the-biornicles#procyon-caffeinaeus#also this may sound childish but it's always thrilling whenever I get to read posts like these#I dunno it's just so outlandish that there are a bunch of people living in the various corners of the planet who like my art and characters#and take the time to read the nonsense I write in tumblr tags#you'd think you would get used to the idea but no it still makes me giddy#also to the anons learning Finnish I'm cheering for you#Finnish people are typically extremely stoked/flattered/shyly pleased whenever someone deems our language even a little bit worth learning#and they love to tell you that Finnish is hard but it's mostly because it's not an Indo-European language#so chances are it's going to be sort of different and incompatible with the language(s) you already speak#English for example is more closely related to Sanskrit Bengali and Persian than Finnish

Language Learning Journey Update
It's been a while since I've been on Tumblr! In the months I've been away, I was focusing heavily on Persian and strengthening my skills in all areas of the language before I switch to a maintenance phase and pick up another language. During this time, I also got really into planning and journaling which has helped me better structure language learning in my schedule as well as reflect on how best to structure my time.
I certainly learned a lot from this time but the biggest takeaway for me is that my biggest pain point when learning a language is acquiring vocabulary. I tend to let it happen rather naturally (slowly) and while it's a valid method, it also leads me to stagnate and plateau. That's why, with the change in my language learning plans, I've also restructured my learning schedule (for, like, the millionth time).
Learning Two Languages Simultaneously
I was originally planning on (re)learning Korean after going through the intensive 3 months of Persian but recent developments in my professional life have pushed me to start learning Cantonese instead. My goal for Cantonese is mostly to reach a decent listening comprehension level and a basic speaking level.
Although I'm learning Cantonese from scratch, I feel that I still have a long way to go with Persian. I am not ready for a traditional maintenance phase, but I know I am close to burn out and have to dial it back. The schedule is structured around Persian and I fill the rest of the time I was using for Persian previously, for Cantonese.
ON/OFF Weeks System
This system was inspired by my need to find a different way to learn and focus on vocabulary while also avoiding burn out in Persian.
ON Weeks: These are weeks where I will be focusing on 1 skill in Persian in the mornings. For example, on Monday, I will be reading intensively (e.g., breaking down phrases, re-reading, translating, compiling vocabulary) for about 25 minutes. In the afternoons, I am working on getting exposure to Cantonese and learning the sound system.
OFF Weeks: These weeks involve only practicing the Persian vocabulary I accumulated during the ON weeks. I'll be re-reading them, defining or looking up words on Forvo, writing practice sentences, uploading them to HelloTalk, and correcting them. I also do some light, passive activities like listening while I clean something or reading for a few minutes without stopping to translate.
Off weeks don't really change much in the way of Cantonese. I will continue with my plan as is.
Maintenance languages: I do have to maintain French and Spanish, however, I am lucky that I interact with languages almost on a daily basis. When I foresee that a day may be void of one, I'll stack it with another hobby of mine (e.g., journaling in Spanish or reading in French).
An ON week coming up.

Day 1 - What is the "birthday song" of your TL? (Part 2/2 - فارسی)
30 day language blog challenge by @moltre-s
I'm not even close to being proficient enough in Persian to be able to write a coherent text about this song, like I did for the Swedish födelsedagssång. Instead, I wrote out the lyrics to the Persian birthday song in order to get some writing practice and tried translating them word by word with my dictionary. I wasn't able to find a translation for every single word, but overall, I think I managed to get pretty close to the actual meaning!
Here are the lyrics in text form:
تولد، تولد تولدت مبارک مبارک مبارک تولدت مبارک لبت شاد و دلت خوش تو گل پرخنده باشی بیا شمعا رو فوت کن که صد سال زنده باشی

Hello
I wanted to ask if i say
تو خوبي
Is it like I’m asking a guy or a girl , or can i use it for both?
Thankyou ☺️
Hello!
Farsi is a gender-free language so you can use it for any gender. Just take care that we differentiate between a formal and friendly “you”.

the thai spelling system is my friend <3
#i love guessing the etymology of every new word i learn and getting new trivia on languages i can't converse in at all#you learn so much about khmer and sanskrit and pali and the order in which different sound changes must have taken place!#today i learned the word for rose and was like 'did they get this from the persian word for rosewater'#YES it turns out!!#also validating that every persian loanword i've learned uses low tones bc i was idly transcribing some stuff last year and went w that

holy shit sina ken toki e so many fucking languages
i applaud you
ah, well, so about that. most of the languages in that list are supposed to be crossed out ! back when I made my blog you could do a few html things in the blog description, but it doesn't show up anymore, especially not on the app/mobile. so now it just looks like a long list of languages which is a bit misleading
I am definitely interested in all those languages, and have taken a few classes or self-studied most of them over the years, but I definitely don't speak all of them
should probably be edited/updated, but I'm not even sure I'd still remember how to do that...
#langblr#I'd say I speak afrikaans english and french#am conversant enough in german and dutch (they're basically freebies with afrikaans as an L1 (although that does cause interference !!))#yiddish I studied while taking a course on the literature of the shoah at uni#and while i do still read forverts regularly#most of my jewish friends moved abroad after uni so I don't actually *use* the language anymore or have an active connection to it#so I don't think it counts anymore#xhosa and persian i've studied a lot as well#i can remember how the grammar works and a handful of words#but i can't speak or read or do anything to a useful/practical level#gothic and toki pona are special#and then nul points to sesotho and japanese. they're on my list. I will learn them one day#i also want to learn bambara and my friend has suggested we learn italian#but I haven't started either of those yet either

Y'ALL I SUCCESSFULLY HAD A SHORT CONVERSATION VIA TEXT MESSAGE WITH A NATIVE FARSI SPEAKER IN FARSI *screaming at an unholy decibel*
I think every day spent in the summer break away from school renders me just a bit more unhinged
but OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD
I think I'm about to cry or chew through a wall or do a cartwheel
Hand me a fUCKING PAPER BAG TO BREATHE INTO
(But no fr just the sight of my pfp with correct, coherent Farsi text underneath it, just communicating in Farsi like it's a casual daily thing means the world with a fucking cherry on top to me, LET'S GO I STILL GOT IT I GOT THE LANGUAGE LEARNING GENE BABY WOOOHOOOO)

Day 2 - What are your favourite names in your TL?
30 day language blog challenge by @moltre-s
Part 1 - Svenska
Jag behövde slå upp några svenska namn på nätet eftersom jag känner inte till så många (eller jag är inte säker om de är verkligen svenska namn). Förut visste jag huvudsakligen några namn av svenska författare, till exempel Astrid, Selma och Håkan (Astrid Lindgren, Selma Lagerlöf, Håkan Nesser). Men jag har hittat så många fina namn nu! Dessa är mina favoriter:
Freja
Alva
Kerstin
Sven
Kjell
Anders
Part 2 - فارسی
Yasmin (یاسمن) (i knew the name, but had no idea it was persian as well - so cool :D)
Fereshteh (فرشته)
Anousheh (انوشه)
Azad (آزاد)
Mehran (مهران)
Farrokh (فرّخ)

If I wanted to go into specifics, I could make things messier by saying that technically the dragons, fae, and all my other super long-lived muses speak a very old dialect of their respective languages (Mandarin and Scottish Gaelic for the fae/dragons), and also a very ancient accent. I didn’t want to drive myself crazy with technicalities though
#it's amusing though because Minglian who is a newer dragon SHOULD speak modern Chinese no problem#but she hangs out with these fossils all the time so she talks like them#they've learned enough to still talk just fine with modern speakers#just the way they pronounce things might seem a bit odd to them#:outofcash#some languages also changed more than others over the years but I'd have to look into it#like I think it's Persian or Farsi that's like the exact same as it was centuries ago?#the fae specifically I do kind of have trouble comparing to modern Scottish Gaelic because-- well I should just make it its own post huh
