#league of villains x terminal!reader

Note
Hi, I hope you are well
I would like to request a scenario with the League of Villains with a reader who is also part of the league but is an inactive member due to a terminal illness, perhaps the reader is an important piece to All for One's plan
(can you add afo too?)
Is it possible to write something platonic? Just how they treat the Reader there and reader's condition, feel free to modify and thank you 😋
Terminally ill Reader Headcanons!
ft. LoV , platonic
background: your quirk is whatever you want, but the drawback to using it means your illness accelerates. thanks for the idea!!!
Shigaraki
recognizes your fragility and requests that you become inactive - it becomes a point of tension for the two of you.
he really just doesn't want you to be in danger, but you can't help but fight him on it. you still wanna help the only family you've known.
he works out a deal with AFO (keep reading) in order to keep you alive and in the league.
he's the last person to say goodbye when he leaves on missions - he just likes to be alone with you a minute longer. he takes what he can get when it comes to time with you.
Dabi
he wants you out of the league. he actually is the one who chose you to join, seeing how sad you were out on the streets.
but he grew to care for you more than he wants to admit, and he can't handle seeing you be hurt
he can't help but feel guilty for bringing you in, but he still takes care of you in ways he feels he can (bringing you food, helping you change any bandages, etc)
if anyone was going to find a way to keep you breathing, it's him.
Toga
she does blood transfusions for you relatively often! she has no issue doing so either.
when it comes to protecting you, she's a little feral about it. but you were the first friend she made in the League, and you're special to her because of that.
she's been known to drink your blood and use your quirk so that you don't have to, and luckily the side effects don't hurt her, but she can't hold the form for long.
When she's home visiting with you, she helps you change and brushes your hair while telling you stories
Twice
he actually cannot believe it when you start getting sicker. he cries and rages over it
he's the first to pull a blanket over your lap and bring you some juice before walking away because he knows if he stays too long he'll get more attached (he's already attached)
you're his favorite league member besides toga. you three are a trio.
he buys you ice cream even though he knows you need better food than that (he doesn't care, it makes you smile)
Spinner
he's going to be your support system best he can! he always offers to take you to treatments
tells you you're going to be okay even when you're getting put on machines and having tubes attached to you. he stays.
he will ensure your days are always enjoyed, even if you only laugh a little (aka he says dumb jokes to make you smile)
if you go, a little bit of him goes too.
Kurogiri
he will take you to every appointment, and will make sure all doctors know exactly how to care for your condition
monitors your heartrate, the way it beats, and lets the other members know when it's irregular (this happens when you see _____ (insert your fav LoV member)).
he's not great at comforting, but he is good at keeping you company. you never feel alone because Kuro is always there for you.
Mr. Compress
this man will pretend like you being sick doesn't affect him. oh it DOES!
you're a dear friend to him, always wanting to hear his stories and watch his newest tricks
so, when he finds out about your sickness, he doesn't let you know how much it hurts him to know that you've been hurting yourself to help all of them.
he doesn't treat you any differently, but he starts to value the time with you even more dearly. you're so close to his heart.
Magne
she will do anything to make sure you're going to get better
she's honestly a little in denial about your illness at first too
but she realizes the severity when she visits you at the hospital once, and she breaks down and cries
she holds your hand and tells you how you still have that kind look in your eyes
AFO
he's really good at pretending he cares, and that's just what he does.
he knew that you would become terminal with the use of your quirk, and he knew the rest of the League would love you.
that's why he kept you around, anyways. he wanted the emotional leverage over the rest of the League.
he's the one who gave you that quirk, after all. your poor parents didn't think they had a choice.
but you don't know about that.
he lets you live without knowing you're a pawn in his game.

Pairing: Gotham Knights! Jason Todd X Female! Reader
Summary: Being a mercenary isn’t easy. Being a lab experiment turned mercenary isn’t easy either. Being a Bio-engineered mercenary in Gotham city with a reformed Red Hood isn’t easy at all.
Warnings: Hurt Comfort, Angst with bittersweet ending, Enemies to Friends??, Female Pronouns, Mild Violence, Horrible Fight Scenes (I’m sorry), Reader is basically Black Cat but little different, implied OOC! Amanda Waller, Mentions of Death, Torture, PTSD, and Panic Attacks.
Author’s Note: I guess I’ll give y’all a break from my Toxic! Jason agenda. But I’m not giving y’all a break from calling y’all out on being slanderous to my underrated, unproblematic princess that is GK! Jason. He may not be as pretty as the other ones, but he got a better relationship with his family than y’all have with y’all’s daddies (jk I’m sorry). Also yes, the reader is Black Cat coded because I love her and I want to see Jason with a cool feline counterpart of his own.

Fuck. FUCK!
Chanted through her mind as she realizes what the hell she has just done. This whole assignment was a set up from the moment that job listing hit her burner phone. Her clawed gloves raked through her hair as she desperately took in her situation.
Months after the death of Batman, criminals became bolder with their crimes despite the lurking remains of Batman’s legacy. New villains and mercenaries came in to either assist Gotham’s veteran rogues or building their own empires among the shadows of the bigger evil’s crimes. However, Y/N didn’t fall into either category.
Originally a lab rat for Amanda Waller to find a cure for her terminal cancer, the cat like mercenary became a quick popular option among gang leaders and the low life to hire to do quick jobs without minimum risk. Of course the cat like persona wasn’t due to her stealth…
A blast rings out of the previously locked door as the girl’s head snaps back. Her body collapses as the roar of victorious laughter fills the air.
“You see how that bitch’s head just snapped back like a twig?!” Victor Sionas laughed through his leather mask as his golden firearm flashed in the fluorescent light of the value.
It was supposed to be a quick heist, minimum risk on her end. Just grab a hard drive with 6.8 Billion dollars worth of stolen and encrypted medical documents and financial records and leave before Black Mask realized she was there. An easy heist for a fair reward.
Victor’s ranting and raving filled the safe in loud echos as his assistant tries to listen to her pager for their normal disposal team. As the crimson slowly sets into the concrete, a faint green glow began to form around her body. The harsh grit releases her life force as it recedes back into her skull.
Amanda Waller wasn’t normally a desperate woman, but when it came to her life, she didn’t care what criminal she had to deal with to get her life back. Even the League of Assassins…
As the pair was about to leave to attend a meeting of some kind, Y/N didn’t know or care to know as her ears ring back into tune. Her body jolts up as she springs back to life in an instant.
As her eyes meet Sionas’ shocked stare, her lips curled into a wicked smirk. Her E/C eyes shined with a new madness as she flexes her adamantium tipped claws, ready to rip out his throat.
Victor quickly raises his gun ready to shoot again as she swipes at his wrist. The appendage falling to the floor as his screams drowned out the echos of his false victories.
“I guess it was an easy job.” She comments before her claws strike again.
Maybe she should ask for a raise to make up for her dry cleaning?
+++++++++++++++
The crime scene was a bloodbath.
Police scrambled and crawled the building as lights and tape marked the massacre. Every surface, furniture, rug, and plant were all tagged, sprayed, and searched for any bodily matter that could lead you to the person behind this horrific crime.
Black Mask’s gang. A once prominent gang in Gotham city who survived fights between Batman and The Red Hood were all dead. Eviscerated. Slaughtered.
All of the dead were clinging onto weapons as either distinct claw marks either craved them to ribbons or they were killed by their own weapons. Whoever did it clearly attacked the ones who attacked first.
The only survivors were the ones who didn’t attempt to fight the assailant. Victor’s assistant was the only one that was harmed among them with a deep set of scratches on her face with a look of horror in her eyes.
A look Nightwing and Red Hood didn’t like to see even from a criminal.
“And you said you didn’t know why this happened?” Nightwing asks skeptical of the woman’s reliability.
The woman eagerly nods as she sputters out, “We caught her in the safe and Sionas wanted to teach her a lesson…we heard her reputation was only with stealing…not this…”
Jason growls as he grew inpatient with her stuttering, but he takes a deep breath. ‘Be Patient…’ He reminds himself before something made his ears perk up.
“It was like magic or something! Sionas shot her point blank in the head and she just came back to life in an instant!! That’s when she went crazy! We just wanted to get her back for stealing from our off shore accounts. We didn’t know that she was a…monster.”
Fuck.
+++++++++++++++++++
Fire. Fire is what it felt like. It crawls from the deepest part of her mind and spreads through her veins like a fever. Her vision tunneled in as memories of all her previous deaths haunting her brain surged forward as her body acted on instinct. Out of fear…
It took three days before the madness faded this time. That was probably the longest time she was trapped in that state since she escaped Waller. Those three days were a fog as she only remembered the splitting head ache from the gun shot and her costume covered in blood.
Once the new broke on a ‘maniac’ who killed the Black Mask’s gang, Y/N knew she couldn’t leave Gotham yet until the buzz died down. She already knew the Bat’s sidekicks were looking for her, so she used whatever cash she had left to hide out in a cheap motel room.
“Fuck….” She groans as her trembling hands dropped her cell phone. Her eyes tried to dart around the aisles of the gas station she was currently hunting for food in. The remaining madness caused her senses to be on high alert and her anxiety to be high.
If she was back home, she could hideout in her apartment with her cat for a month before finding another job listing, but she was trapped in Gotham in a ratty motel.
So venturing to the crummy gas station for some junk food and beer is the next best thing. At least the disinterested cashier doesn’t pay her any mind. 4am on a weekday with a case of beer probably made her just appear to be a normal tweaker.
(Y/N) adjusts her sunglasses and makes sure her silver hair was well hidden under her zip-up’s hood before she brings her items to the counter. The zit faced teen gives her a look over, not hiding the attention he gave to her exposed cleave from the tank top she had showing.
“Ma’am, we don’t allow sunglasses inside the store.” He creaks out. Her (E/C) roll as she takes her sun glasses off. The door chimes as someone enters the store, but her attention was focused on the cashier. When he finally scanned her beer, his cracking voice asks,
“Do you have ID, Ma’am?”
Her hands go to her sweatpants pocket and only feels the cash she brought. Her mental anguish grows as she sighs in annoyance. Her fake id was in motel, and she technically doesn’t exist so she never had a real id.
Deciding to turn up the charm, she smiles sweetly at the teenager as she says, “I’m sorry, but I left my id back at my place. I’m sure you can tell I’m old enough, right?”
Her cleavage seemed to not work its charm as the teen rudely says,
“I can tell you’re old by your hair lady. But I need ID.”
Her eyes widen as a faint glow of green shows as she snaps at him. “I’m not old! I’m 24, you little p-!”
She stops herself as she takes a deep breath as she feels the madness subsided. She really didn’t wanna kill a kid over some cheap beer.
“Fine…I had a bad day so just get me the snacks.” She admits in defeat as she pulls out a hundred bucks. Just as she was going to pay, a hand drops some beef jerky and a case of beer on the counter beside her items. A deep voice cuts the air and causes a shiver to crawl up her spine.
“Add her stuff and beer to my order.” A thick, veiny hand presents the cashier with his ID and a credit card as she turns her head to see who it was that saved her evening.
Before her was a man who stood well over 6 feet tall. His shoulders were as broad as an old oak tree with muscles strong enough to take one down. His face wasn’t particularly the normal standard for attractiveness, but the strong jaw and scar gave him a handsome roughness that made her stomach tighten. It didn’t help that his nearly buzzed hair gave him a military sense, but his eyes were what made her heart stop in her chest. The beautiful green eyes that glowed an unearthly hue that she was familiar with.
She sees it in her eyes everyday. The scar of the Lazarus pit.
(Y/N) almost forgot where she was before the cashier cleared his throat. Her focus returned back to the counter as she grabs her stuff. Before she could run off, something made her stop to wait for the man. Whether it was curiosity or stupidity, she didn’t know.
Maybe she wanted to see what his deal was? Was he with Waller? The League of Assassins? Can he tell she was from the pit too? How different were they? How many times did he die and come back?
The opportunity to speak with someone who may can relate to her outweighed her wariness from her situation. But it was curiosity that killed the cat, right?
As the man starts heading for the door, she follows as she says,
“Excuse me?”
His eyes meet hers as a small smile as he says,
“Hey, I’m sorry for stepping in over there. I understand when stuff isn’t going your way.”
A warmth takes over her face as she says shyly, “No, it’s fine I just wanted to thank you. That was really sweet of you…”
As the two walk out, the stranger's friendly demeanor drops a little as he mumbles into the empty night air.
"So, you're the one who killed Victor Sionas..."
Her breath releases as she hears the pin drop. Her eyes dart around the parking lot as she sees the only vehicle is a old school motorcycle. She doesn't have any weapons and she wasn't sure if how skilled he was or if he had gained powers just like her from the pit.
With a frown, (Y/N) gruffs out, "Yeah...what are you gonna let me enjoy my last beer before you turn me in?"
She looks up to the man as their eyes meet. His eyes studying her as she keeps a tight grip on her bag. Maybe if he charges at her, she can swing the bag to his head and throw him off...
"No." He answers simply as he heads towards his bike. Her eyes widen in disbelief as she sputters out.
"No? I just admitted to murder and you're letting me go??"
"Yep." He answers over his shoulder as he loads his things into the compartment under his seat. Irritation fills her being instead of the relief she should have felt. She stomps towards him as she fusses,
"What's your deal? You buy me a beer and casually ask me if I commit murder? And you're gonna just leave? Did the pit mess you up that bad??" She snaps at him as she stands face to face, face to chest with him. Her eyes glowed eerily as he was filled, and a familiar shiver went down his spine.
His hands clap onto her shoulders as he pulls her close to him. A wave of coldness filled her body as the eerie glow covered his hands. The familiar feeling of the Lazarus pit filled her as he leaned into a whisper.
"The only reason I'm not hauling your pretty ass to Arkham right now is because I understand that it wasn't you when you killed them, Kitty..." His eyes glowed momentarily as a sad look briefly flashed into those green pools. "A petty mercenary who had no history of mass murder on file doesn't just jump to it without warning. The Lazarus Pit fucks up people to their core, so trust me when I say that I understand better than anyone how you feel..."
'Understand? How can he understand?' Her mind unravels as she looks up at him in disbelief. Has he ever woke up afraid of what he might have done the night before? Worry about when someone would come and shoot him in the head or stab him just to see if he could come back without being submerged anymore? Did Waller use him to heal her at the expense of his own pain just to throw him away to fend for himself???
Rage flashes through her as she roughly pulls away from him. Her bag falls to the asphalt as glass shatters. Her eyes are wild as old memories filled her. "Don't you dare say you understand me? You don't know shit about what I had to go through?"
His eyebrows frown together as he grimaces. A look of recognition and guilt flashes before he says to her. "You're right. I don't know what you went through before you died, but I do understand how you're feeling. The anxiety, the rage, the blood lust...I wanna help you."
She laughs bitterly as she figures out something about him. He only died once and was brought back. The skunk stripe in his hair should have given it away when she realized he was similar to her.
"Which time?" (Y/N) asked as she turned around and walked away. "I've died plenty of times to know that you will never understand..."
And she leaves the man alone in the parking lot as she storms off to her motel, not caring if he sees where she went or not. Her heart was beating out of control as she felt the wavering thoughts of going back to him and either hitting him or hugging him.
‘Maybe I need to rest some more….’
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Silence filled the museum as the dust bunnies and art laid undisturbed during their rest from the public eye. Her footsteps were a minimum as she walked through the shadowy parts of the building, trying to find what she was sent to retrieve.
After another week of hiding out, a job was directly pinged for her on the job board. Her eyes squinted at it at first because the offer was a little bogus to her.
‘Steal a painting, retrieve the hard drive inside, and bring it to the disclosed location in exchange for 2 Million dollars in unmarked bills.’
2 Million for a petty thief job that would have more suited Catwoman instead her seemed pretty unusual. But, at this point, her phyiscal cash funds were running low and she still was afraid of using her offshore accounts now that she knows that some zombie like her knew who she was.
Her masked eyes scanned the building’s plaza until she found what she was looking for. A large flowery portrait hanging just beyond the fountain. Her head tilts as she looks at it from afar.
‘Pretty… I wonder if I can find a print of it to buy to hang in my living room…’ Her steps remaining slow and cautious until she reaches the fountain. She looks under where the painting hung, trying not to get too close to it. There was no tag or podium that held the artist’s name or any indication that it was an actual art piece. It was most likely some print from a furniture store catalog or Etsy.
Her eyes rolled as she realizes that the listing was another trap. Obviously from someone who didn’t know shit about art or how to buy mercenaries on the black market.
As if on que, her ears buzzed as she heard the pure instinct take over as she whips around. Her hand immediately stops the staff about to hit her in the face as she elbows the smaller opponent in the stomach before slamming her fist in his cheek to knock him back. The guy gets thrown back a couple of feet as he gasped for the air she punches outta him.
She looks to the guy as she twirls his staff absent mindedly in her hand. His costume and smaller physique gave it away as to who he was. She remembers seeing a tv show story about him the previous night on the news. The boy wonder, Robin. At least the third version of him.
“Hey, tweety bird. You good?” She asked in a nonchalant tone. Her eyes unamused as she watches the kid cough up a lung as he looked up at her in shock that she wasn’t attacking him like he expected her to.
“You know, it’s dangerous to be on job listing boards like that.” She scolds him lightly as she walks around him and grabs his arm, gently helping him up and sitting him by the fountain. “There’s actual killers on that board who would have happily tried cutting you up for pulling a shitty fake job like this.”
The sidekick glares at her as he was already confused as he just witness the girl he was sure killed an entire gang just casually scold him. “Like how you did with Black Mask?”
Her eyes flashed with guilt before the nonchalant personality appeared again as she focused on throwing the staff up to make it spin. “It was self defense. He and his gang had it coming for all the child drug peddling and the lives he ruined.”
A heavier drop down of three other figures caught her attention as she looks around. Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood were surrounding the fountain, blocking her in. Her anxiety rising as she hides it with a now playful smile.
“Damn, didn’t realize little old me warranted for the whole family to come get me.” She says playfully. “Don’t worry I promise to be out of y’all’s city soon.”
“You still have to pay for your crimes.” Batgirl says as she steps forwards slightly. The feline mercenary tilts her head as she looks at them with now false concern.
“Me? A defenseless street cat?” She asked before laughing. “You can certainly try.”
Nightwing steps closer as her shoulders square up. Her defensive stance rising as she observes him. Way too lean to be the guy she met, and she can tell his face was more pretty boy looking.
“We wanna help you… but you still have to pay for what you’ve done even if you didn’t mean to.” He says softly.
‘So they know…that just means they are gonna be more defensive instead of offensive. They can’t risk killing me when they know I could rampage again.’ Her eyes shine as she laughs coldly at him.
“Oh, you wanna help me rot in prison?” She says as she finally looks at the Red Hood.
Right build, right height, and she’s sure if she can knock that helmet off, right face. That’s the man she met a week ago that affected her so badly. She knew she couldn’t let him get a good grab on her or she maybe toast.
She turns her now glowing eyes back to Nightwing as she smirks. “I think you would be better off letting me leave or else you can see what I actually do when I mean it.” She bluffs.
Movement nearly catches her off guard as Robin tries to rush her again. The staff in her hand flies into his face as she tries to move as Batgirl flies kicks her in the face. Her ears ring as the warm feeling of blood starts to run out of her nose. The cat catches the bat’s fist before she whips her in the face with another punch. She used the disorienting blow to slide under her legs and give a good kick to her knee. The distinctive pop and her cry lets her know she did dislocate the bone.
She remains in her crouched up position, ready to pounce. She can feel their eyes observing as her broken nose begins to heal as it disgustingly pops back into place as the blood retreats back to its original place like it was on rewind. Her wild eyes looks to them and makes notes of their stances.
Nightwing was ready to pounce on her. He stared at her like she was the wild animal that he knew she was. It was a look she was used to.
The Red Hood wasn’t even in an offensive or defensive position. He stood with his back straight as he watches her. Damn his stupid helmet from seeing his eyes, she wanted to know what he was thinking about. Was he bluffing too or was he trying to get a good feel on how to catch her.
Before Nightwing can start advancing on her, Red stops him with a step forward and raises hand. Nightwing looks confused as he asked him.
“What are you doing?” He seethes to him. “We gotta take her down, she already hurt Robin and Batgirl.”
“Out of self defense.” The Red Hood clarifies before chuckling. His modulated voice making the feline theft frown. “If she was dangerous like you think, she could have sliced Robin’s throat with those claws of hers when he first attacked. You guys were attacking first and she responded with non lethal force.”
Her eyes glared at the man as she stands up, slightly agitated. “So? Maybe I just don’t wanna kill a kid?”
Red tilts his head as he turns his attention to her. “Calm down, Kitty….if you surrender, I promise I won’t let them send you off to the pound.”
Nightwing looks at Red in horror as he basically promised to protect a wanted criminal. He didn’t seem to concerned by it. He even surprises his team by removing his helmet as he looks to the one they were chasing.
“I found your file on Amanda Waller’s network. Took me three days, but I know what she did to you, (Y/N).” The man she knew from the gas station.
The images of all the torture she endured flashed through her mind all at once as she remembers all Waller put her through for the sake of her cure.
Multiple executions to test the powers of the pit. Torture and savage punishments for the slightest disobedience. The nightmares and madness that fueled so many panic attacks. The feeling of her organs stolen to be put in that evil woman so she can use her healing factor to win against cancer while she spent days slowly dying and coming back to life over and over until her new organs regenerated back into her.
“Why?!” She snaps at him as rage filled her again. Her confusion over his insistence to help her made her so angry. Why would he wanna help her? Just because they were both dunked in a pool of Ra’s bath water?
“You’re the feared Red Hood! You’ve done worst shit than I’ve ever done and you are trying to act as my savior?!” She yells at him as she stomps towards him.
Nightwing tries to step between them, but Red keeps him away as she finally stood before him. Her hand rips off her goggles, revealing her face to him as she pokes into his chest. Her own chest tightening as her body shook. Her breath was tight as angry tears rolled down her face.
“Answer me, dammit! Why do you think you can save me?!”
“I don’t think I can save you.” He answers honestly. “I wanna help you save yourself…”
A look of grief passes over his eyes as he looks at the shorter woman. A memory of someone she didn’t know making his resolve strengthen.
“I was trapped in a state of anger for so long that I pushed everyone away that was trying to help me…it wasn’t until I lost the one person that tried to save me that I realized how much it meant to have someone just hold a hand out for me…” He says as he grips her shoulders. The expected coldness didn’t meet her. She felt him. The warmth seeping through his gloves into her suit. It felt…comforting….nice.
Her vision began tunneling as she felt her chest hyperventilating as she cries. His gentle words finally breaking her as he mumbles to her. “Let me help you fight the madness so you won’t be alone anymore…”
Her knees buckling as a sob broke through her. The warmth of his arms wrapping around her and pulling her into his chest made her cries so gut wrenching. Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing watch in shock as they watched Jason, not only be the most gentle he’s ever been with someone, but see a stray tear fall from him eye.
As the two remained tied together as an unspoken bond was formed. A bond between two lost souls forcibly brought back into this world now feeling safe in each other’s warmth.

Author’s Note: I’m gonna make a part 2 to this one because I actually like it. Let me know if you like this, if you hate it, or whatever. I’m trying to clear out my drafts so expect more Jason and other characters coming out either this week or next week.

FULL BINGO MASTERLIST
✐posted 08.15.2020✐
The air felt heavy as it usually did whenever you visited that dark and eerie place the same time every month. The sky was filled with dark grey clouds and soft rain droplets began pelting your body as you clapped your hands and bowed your head in front of the tombstone. You rose to your feet, placing the fresh bouquet of flowers you had purchased in front of the urn beside the tombstone and dusted off the dirt on your kneecaps.
Each raindrop harshly attacked you as they fell as soon enough you were drenched as you walked towards your car, your tears melding with the droplets streaking your cheeks. Finally you arrived by your car, sitting in the driver’s side as the leather seat became wet from your body.
This time of the month was always the hardest for you, the suffocating feeling that always remained in your chest never left since you had visited your sister’s grave.
Nonetheless you knew you had to keep moving on, knowing that if you sat around with your thoughts you would just make yourself more upset than you already were. You started your vehicle and pulled out of the cemetery and onto the main road, making your way home.
Although it didn’t seem like it, life wasn’t always so miserable for you. There was a time when you were happy, a time where you could look back at with adoration.
When you were starting high school, you were attending the esteemed U.A. High, pursuing your dream of becoming a hero just as every other kid your age attending a hero school was aspiring to do. Your parents had both passed away in a car accident when you were young and you were left in your older sister, (S/N)’s care. She supported you all the way, acting as the mother and father you had no memory of but desperately wanted as you could only feel envious of the other kids who had their parents attend all of their ceremonies and functions.
But it wasn’t so bad, having your sister supporting you as best as she could to make do with the unfortunate situation you were both put in.
Although things were bright for a short period of time, you were granted a heartbreaking and life changing call one day after school. You were just about to finish up your first year at U.A. and if constantly dealing with the League of Villains or schoolwork wasn’t enough, you found out about (S/N) having a terminal disease.
The doctors gave you and your sister their condolences, explaining that (S/N) was undergoing a disease as a result of her quirk not being able to maintain her body as it was slowly killing her from the inside out. Since you were informed of this unfortunate event, you dropped out of the hero course in U.A., having to pursue a part time job on top of taking online classes to balance paying for your sister’s medical bills as well as wanting to still be able to have a high school diploma (even if it wouldn’t be as a hero).
It broke your heart to have to leave your friends and not be able to chase after your biggest dream but nothing meant more to you than your sister’s health. She had taken care of you for so long; now it was your turn to return the favor.
Although you had left U.A. High, your friends that you had gotten quite close to made sure to visit the hospital in which you were temporarily staying at from time to time after school. Sero, Kirishima, Mina, and Kaminari were the ones who visited the most and they would even get Bakugou to come along on certain days as well. It made you feel reassured to have people being there for you during a difficult time in your life.
But as the years passed and your previous classmates graduated, their frequent visits turned to occasional texts here and there as their lives took a full 180 as they were thrusted into the craziness that comes with being a pro hero. You understood the position they were in and would often watch the news with your sister, feeling proud as you heard story after story of your friends saving people during their times of need.
Unfortunately with time, (S/N) lost her long battle with her terminal disease and even though you knew it was bound to happen, there was no way you would ever be able to subsidize the pain you were feeling following her passing.
For the longest time you felt alone and there were times you still felt bedridden with sorrow and desolation, still feeling the pain of your sister’s passing as it had only been a year since her death.
In order to feel somewhat at peace, you would still text your sister’s old phone number everyday. When you were still in school and she was looking after you, you had to let her know if you were eating, what time you got home, and things in this similar nature as (S/N) was often working and wanted to check up on you when you were home alone. This became a force of habit and you didn’t want to stop, using this new texting method as a way for you to settle your own mind and give yourself some peace by not breaking this procedure that your sister had you do.
You would even call her phone every now and then, wanting to hear her sweet voice through her voicemail. It was silly, you knew it was, but this was the only thing that was keeping you sane. When you lose someone you love in your life, someone who was by your side at all times, they don’t dissipate in thin air right when they die. You lose them slowly. From when you wake up and realize breakfast isn’t ready or when you realized you didn’t have anyone to talk to, that’s when it hits you. Your sister was gone and now you had to learn how to live without her.
You pulled into the parking lot of the bookstore, letting out a sigh as you exited the vehicle. The first day of every month for the past year since your sister died you would visit her grave for a little chat. It gave you a peace of mind to be able to speak with her in what seemed like the closest thing to “a talk in person” as you could. Sometimes texting her number or listening to her voicemail on repeat wasn’t enough.
“(L/N)! You’re here!” Aiko, one of your employees, exclaimed as you walked inside. “I thought you weren’t going to come in today.”
You shrugged, slipping off your soaked coat onto the hanger by the front desk. “I didn’t feel like staying home alone so I might as well sell some books instead.”
Aiko nodded, getting up to put back some misplaced books that customers had strewn around randomly. You sat down as she went to the back, leaning back in your chair as you stared up at the ceiling.
The emptiness inside you, a feeling that you had grown accustomed to by now no matter how much it hurt, felt stronger than usual that day. You pulled your phone out from your pocket, sending a quick message to your sister to let her know you had gotten to work safely. Within minutes, just as you were about to put your phone away and get to work, the usual “delivered” sign under your message changed into “read,” indicating that someone had seen your message. That’s weird… maybe a glitch?
Still it was unsettling so you decided to call (S/N)’s number, waiting patiently as the phone began to ring. With each ring your suspicions lessened as you assumed the read receipt was a mistake. Just as you were about to hang up, you could hear someone pick up their phone from the other line.
“Hello?” A man’s voice asked from the other side and you nearly slipped off your chair from shock, not expecting to hear a live voice. You immediately hung up, looking back at your sister’s number as you were completely discombobulated from what had happened. You assumed that one of these days (S/N)’s number would be given to another person but you still were taken aback to hear another person’s voice.
***
The events from the day before were quickly vanished from your mind as you had to tend to customers right after the mysterious man picked up your call. You returned home, already tired from visiting your sister and working the whole day didn’t help with that. You even sent the number a message about what you had eaten for dinner, the lack of a reply making you forget once again.
In fact, you couldn’t even remember what had happened yesterday as you absentmindedly texted (S/N) as you usually did.
Y/N: I’m heading out. Hopefully today will be better than yesterday. Love you and I miss you!
Just as you hit the “send” button for the message, realization sets in as you wanted to smack yourself for forgetting that another person had gotten the number. Right when you were about to send an apology message, the unknown man sent you a message back.
MAN: Um… Who is this?
You were quick to write up an explanation.
Y/N: Sorry, my older sister used to own this phone number. She used to make me text her whenever I ate or left the house so I got used to sending these messages. She passed away a year ago and I still send the texts. I’m sorry for bothering with these silly texts. You won’t have to deal with them from now on.
You sent your explanation, deciding to delete the messages and shoving your phone into your pocket. It was nice to maintain this habit of yours while it lasted but it was time to let bygones be bygones. You didn’t bother to read the man’s response as you left for another day of work.
***
The rest of the day passed like every other day did, slow and filled with your own loneliness. You bowed to and thanked your last customer of the day and let out a big sigh as you began closing up the shop, putting away any books dispersed around the shelves and taking the cash from the register.
You turned the small TV in the corner off as well, smiling at the sight of Bakugou and Kaminari finishing up a mission and successfully catching a villain as they were acknowledged for their bravery on the news. You couldn’t express how proud you felt when you saw your friends, or any of your classmates really, on the news for their achievements as they continued to save as many people as they possibly could.
Just as you were grabbing your things to leave, your phone buzzed on the table. You glanced at it, furrowing your brows at the sign of your sister’s name, which you still hadn’t removed from your contacts, sending you a message.
MAN: Did you eat dinner?
You were beyond puzzled. Did he mean to send this to you?
Y/N: I think you have the wrong number…
MAN: You’re the one who sent me a message about my number belonging to my sister, right?
How odd… It wasn’t a mistake then.
Y/N: Yes, that’s me. But why did you ask if I ate dinner?
MAN: Oh well I saw your text from two nights ago talking about what you ate for dinner. At first I didn’t think about it but then you explained why you texted this number and I just wanted to know if you ate dinner? Since you usually let your sister know if you did.
You smiled at the message. Whoever this man was, he seemed genuine and considerate.
Y/N: You’re very sweet. You don’t have to worry about those texts I used to send. It was a force of habit and I won’t bother you with them again.
He almost immediately responded.
MAN: Don’t worry about that. I’m gonna take that as you didn’t eat dinner.
You didn’t reply initially as you were trying to figure this guy out and before you could muster up a response, he beat you to it.
MAN: From your area code you must be from Musutafu, too. This might be a lot but do you want to grab some dinner? There’s a great place on the intersection by U.A. High School.
The request was definitely an odd one. You’d never been asked out in this manner, then again it was rare to be asked out like this, but you didn’t want to say no. The mystery man seemed nice and it would be good for you to actually make a friend instead of being alone all day long. If it weren’t for Aiko or your customers, you probably wouldn’t meet another human at all.
Y/N: That sounds nice. Can we meet in an hour if that works for you?
MAN: Sounds good! I get off work then so I’ll see you soon.
***
It got colder just an hour after you closed the bookstore. Miniscule snowflakes fell from the sky, littering the roads and the outside with a white blanket. You waited outside the restaurant that the mystery man told you about. As it was close by U.A. you and your close friends would stop by after school so you knew exactly where he was talking about. You smiled as the memories of the times you spent with your friends whom you missed dearly flooded your mind, reminding you about how lonely you truly were now.
A shiver went down your spine as you rubbed your arms in an attempt to warm yourself up. You checked your phone for the time, realizing that he was an hour late. Maybe he got busy at work, you told yourself as you let out a sigh, preparing to leave and go home.
“Hey!” A voice called out from down the road. You turned to the source of the sound, squinting through the snowflakes as you identified a man waving at you with his blinding red hair being the one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb.
As he got closer and closer and you got a better look at his face, your eyes widened as you realized who the man was. “Kirishima?”
Kirishima stood in front of you, giving you a perplexed expression. Usually when people recognized him, they addressed him as Red Riot due to his popularity as a pro hero. But there was something about you that seemed so familiar, something that he couldn’t quite figure out. “Do we know each--” He stopped mid sentence as his eyes grew into the shape of saucers. “Y/N?!”
Before you could say anything else, Kirishima’s face lit up as he was stoked to finally see his old friend again. “How have you been? You look great! Even better than how you did back in U.A.!”
“T-Thank you.” You grew flustered, not expecting to be praised in such a manner. “So you’re the one who got my sister’s number?”
“Yeah. I had to get it changed after a fan ended up leaking my number and I kept getting a ton of messages from random people,” Kirishima said with a laugh, rubbing the nape of his neck sheepishly. His expression faltered into a more serious one as he glanced down at you. “And I'm sorry to hear about your sister. I know she meant a lot to you and I should’ve visited you guys more after graduation.”
You shook your head, a small smile on your lips. “It’s okay. I know you’ve been busy being a hero and all.”
He looked down at you, taking his scarf from his neck and wrapping it around yours. You looked up at him, moving to remove the fabric from around your neck. “Oh no, it’s okay. You don’t have to—”
“You look cold. It’s the least I can do for making you wait so long.” Kirishima smiled, wrapping the end of the scarf over your shoulder once more. “Well I’m glad to see that you’re okay. To be honest I did miss you after all this time.”
Kirishima opened the door to the restaurant, gesturing for you to go in. “Come on, we can catch up over dinner.” You grinned, entering the building as he followed suit.
You couldn’t remember the last time you felt genuinely happy like this and you couldn’t ask for a better person to bring back the happiness that you had been lacking in your life for quite some time.

You tried to block other passengers voices out with your headphones. You thought that with the amount that your plane ticket had cost you would been able to get some peace and quiet, but no. For your luck you were seated in front of pair businessman who were enjoying the benefits of their flight. They were arguing loudly while enjoying alcoholic beverages that the flight attendants were carrying for them. You were sure that the headache that was waiting for those men in few hours would be a nightmare. You were also suffering from headache but for completely different reasons. You hadn’t slept well for three days and were ready to bite the men’s head of in any given minute. You are ready to start your angry rant towards the men when a interesting news on the screen on the back of the seat in front of you gets your attention. You take your headphones of to listen.
‘’...Due the fact that no one hasn’t been able to stop Storm causing terror in Electro City the police forces has asked help from U.O.J (Union of justice) to bring Storm and her associates in front of justice....’’ The newscaster tells with excitement in her voice. On the background is a tall skyscraper with the big blue logo U.O.J on display. Union of justice was an organization which controlled all the other superhero units around the world. U.O.J was acting as police force who supervised the supers. Their job included to relocate superheroes in to areas where wasn’t any or where they were needed the most. Famous leagues of superheroes like a BLACKPINK, which only accepted female superheroes or K.A.R.D which was famous of their mental abilities were all working underneath of U.O.J’s watch. ‘’So we are going to get new defenders of the law on our tail?’’ Yoongi’s lazy voice distracts you from the news on the screen. ‘’I thought you were still sleeping.’’ You say surprised. ‘’I was trying to but the passengers behind of us kept waking me up.’’ Yoongi sighs annoyed and pulls a sleeping mask from his face. His raven hair is messy after sleep and his brown eyes are paired with heavy bags. After all Yoongi had had stayed awake as long as you had.
‘’...The group assigned to look after Electro City is called BTS which is shortened from Battle trusting supers.’’ The reporter continues while you listen with one ear. There had been other attempts to stop your plans and all of them had failed miserably so you weren’t that worried. ‘’Hmm, what do you think about the new heroes, can they put us behind the bars?’’ You ask quietly mildly interested in Yoongi’s opinion. Yoongi waits until a flight attendant has walked past your seats and answers with a smirk. ‘’They don’t have a chance.’’ ~
After painfully long security check at the airport you and Yoongi are finally able to leave to pick your bags. ‘’You would think that security checks would be faster with the current amount of technology.’’ You whine while walking towards the carousel carrying your bags. ‘’Perhaps it would be little bit faster if the city didn’t have a super villains to worry about.’’ ‘’Damn it, why anyone can’t catch Storm?’’ You complain while you wait for your luggage to arrive. ‘’Perhaps the police force isn’t capable enough.’’ ‘’excuse me, I couldn’t stop myself from hearing your conversation.’’ A very handsome stranger breaks into your conversation. The man has a bleached hair, wide shoulders and bright brown eyes paired with most luscious lips you have seen.‘’ While you keep checking the man out he continues talking. ‘’I heard that the city has been assigned with some new superheroes whose job is to end the terror of the Storm.’’ ‘’Yeah, I saw the news too.’’ You nod. ‘’Don’t you think that our city is losing its face when they have to call team of superheroes to help even though the captain of the force is super themself?’’ You add enjoying the opportunity to argue about the topic. ‘’To be honest I don't think that ability to control sound waves is that useful.’’ Yoongi adds in the conversation. Yoongi spots your luggage and goes to pick it up. ‘’Well I think it's quite nice, I could block the voices of my loud roommates.
I’m Kim Seokjin by the way.’’ The man introduces himself after remembering that he hadn’t at the first place. ‘’I’m L/N Y/N and that grumpy looking one is Min Yoongi.’’ You tell offering your hand for Seokjin which accepts it happily. ‘’It’s pleasure to meet you.’’ Seokjin tells flashing a bright smile. His hand is much bigger than yours and you can feel the heat radiating from his grip. ‘’Y/N as much as I would like to let you flirt with airport stranger our ride is here.’’ Your gaze turns instantly towards Yoongi who has picked both of your bags while you were focused on your conversation. Yoongi is holding his phone on his hand and looking you with amused smile. ‘’Uh, it seems that I have to go.’’ You tell with slight disappointment and turn ready to leave when Seokjin stops you. ‘’Wait! Look if u ever want to talk about superheroes again here's my card.’’ He tells handing you a simple white card with his printed information. ‘’Maybe I will. See you around.’’ You tell waving for the man and following Yoongi out form the terminal. ~ You gasp when a second finger disappears into your heat. The rooms is filled with your small moans when the man between your legs works on his magic.
‘’Ji-jimin I’m close.’’ You warn and the man in question smirks. ‘’Already, you must have really missed me.’’ Jimin coos and lowers his head to suck your clit. You ignore his comment and tangle your fingers into his silver locks. The bedroom air is full of humidity from your heated and slick bodies. On the moment you have arrived home you had rushed to the one man’s arms you knew would give you relief without questioning you. Yoongi had just rolled his eyes and marched up the stairs in to his room, probably to continue sleeping. Jimin had looked you with surprise when you had launched yourself into his arms and pressed hungry kisses on the corner of his lips.
You feel the familiar throbbing between your legs and are ready to let go when Jimin pulls away from your cunt leaving you pulsing when the orgasm slips away. ‘’What do you think that you are doing?’’ You narrow your eyes feeling pissed from your denied release. ‘’You didn’t call me even single time when you were away.’’ Jimin pouts. ‘’I don't think that you deserve to come so easily. ‘’Are you fucking serious.’’ You can feel the room air turning electric from your frustration and small sparks goes through your body. ‘’You called Namjoon. ’’Jimin mumbles and you push him away only to push him down on the mattress and you move sitting top of his thighs. You can see his hard member throbbing and small streaks of precum leaking from his tip. He is as horny as you are but decides that it's time to act petty in his jealous stage of mind. ‘’My sweet boy, you know that we aren’t dating. I’m not responsible in anyway to keep in touch with you when I’m away, besides I called Joon only because I needed his help.’’ You tell and rake your nails along his chest and pinch his left nipple making him gasp. You run your vet tongue along his right nipple and suck it gently to make him squirm. Payback is a bitch. ‘’You needed Joon’s help for phone sex?’’ Jimin shutters in middle of his sentence when your hand trails down along his abs and your hand takes a hold of his erected member. ‘’So you were spying on us, tsk you are such a prat.’’ You slide lower down on Jimin’s thighs leaving behind wet path leaking from your soaked core. You open your mouth and hollow your cheeks putting Jimin’s throbbing member between your lips. ‘’I just happened to walk past his room when I heard you.’’ Jimin defends himself while sweat drips down his face. He doesn’t dare to move. Anticipation is rushing through his veins when you finally start to suck his length. Jimin’s dick feels heavy against your tongue and you can taste the slight taste of salt coming from his precum. You feel how Jimin’s thighs tenses underneath your legs when he tries to stop himself from squirming and his hands find your H/C locks. You work mercilessly, Speeding your sucking at random times to only suddenly slow down or go completely still. Your hand finds its place in the end of Jimin’s shaft where you can’t quite reach with your tongue. You trace the large vein on his dick with your tongue and slide your hand to squeeze his balls. ‘’Y/N I’m so close.’’ Jimin whines his half moon eyes tightly shut and his hands holding tightly on his bed sheets. hearing his words you still completely and pop your mouth away from his member. A string of saliva connects your mouth to his member and you swipe your mouth clean. ‘’If you want to come you need to make me come first with that dick of yours.’’ You smirk after receiving and angry glare. ‘’That is something that I can arrange.’’ Jimin changes into sitting position against the headboard and his hands finds your hips. He guides you to hover above his hard member and with one hard push makes your seated on his dick feeling how his erection pulses inside of your walls. The speed that Jimin sets is merciless and he guides you to bounce up and down his dick while his hands squeezes your hips. You feel the familiar knot tightening in your lower belly and your hand slides between your connected bodies and seek your clit. Jimin looks with hungry eyes how your fingers works on your own clit and groans loudly when your heat tightens around his member. ‘’Come for me.’’ Jimin demands and leans to seal his feverish lips against yours. Jimin bites your lower lip and the feeling is enough to make you see stars. Your walls squeeze hardly around Jimin and soon he is coming alongside you. When you come down from your high you are laying on top of Jimin’s body his dick still seated tightly inside of you. Jimin draws lazy circles on your back and when you lift your head to look at his face you can see the satisfied smile on his lips. ‘’Thanks, I really needed that.’’ You tell and roll over Jimin’s side to settle on his side while his now softened member slips out of you. ‘’Was the trip that bad, huh?’’ Jimin asks turning to cuddle you. ‘’Sadly.’’ You sigh. ‘’You should never trust people on this business.’’ ‘’Not even us?’’ Jimin asks arching his brows teasingly. ‘’I think that you know by now that you guys are only ones I trust. Otherwise I wouldn’t let you have been buried between my legs instead you would have met some shock therapy.’’ You tell raising your hand up lazily when small blue sparks dances along your fingers.
‘’You surely know how to make your return quite exciting.’’ Jimin huffs while trying to stop himself from laughing. ‘’Well we all need some excitement into our lives, don’t we?’’ You ask while a small yawn escapes your lips. ‘’Let's sleep for now.’’ You tell and close your eyes that are turning heavy.
You are feeling too satisfied and tired to care the mess on the bed sheets and the wetness between your legs. You know that you will regret not cleaning yourself up when you wake up but right now you couldn’t care less. ~ You find Namjoon in the kitchen reading a newspaper and sipping coffee from his steaming mug. He hisses lightly when the hot drink burns his mouth but continues his reading. He is so focused on his paper that he doesn’t even notice how his round glasses slips down his nose, a glasses that actually doesn’t need and uses only for the looks. ‘’Morning.’’ You greet quietly and head for the fridge. You pick a cart of orange juice and drink it down straight from the source. ‘’Morning.’’ Namjoon grunts and returns to his paper. You push the fridge shut and go sit on the bar stool next to Namjoon’s. ‘’What has gained you interest this morning?’’ You ask and learn curiously to see the article better which he is so interested in. Namjoon slides the paper closer to you without a word. There is a whole two page article about the new superheroes that are going to take over of supervising your city. Your eyes stops on the picture of the four superheroes posing in their supersuits. The first man on the right has cherry colored hair and muscular figure covered in black leather outfit with red sleeves. His mask is covering his whole face except dark and piercing eyes. ‘’Super Strength.’’ You mumble after reading the text below the figure and Namjoon hums on your side. ‘’Alias Kratos.’’* The second man had ebony hair and and the brightest smile you had ever seen. His suit was made of red latex and didn’t leave anything on imagination. Before you can read the description out loud Namjoon beats you to it. ‘’Apollo*2, a hero with ability to manipulate light and heat.’’ His mask covers only the area of his eyes. The third man was wearing a electric blue suit with a zipper in front paired with a mask of same color. He had shiny blue hair stopping on his ears and he was posing with confidence. ‘’V, also known as Victory has superhuman speed.’’ You continue before Namjoon can and he answers with amused smile. ‘’And last but not least is Siren. He has ability of enchant you with his voice and control your mind for short periods of time.’’ Siren had a black suit with bright pink stripes on his side. The hero has blonde hair and he is sending flying kisses on the picture. ‘’All members of BTS are also highly trained with hand to hand combat and some simple weapons such as throwing knives and hand guns.’’ Namjoon finishes the section and you roll your eyes. ‘’You could think that the city would get the hint and give up already.’’ You sigh tiredly. ‘’Yoongi is up.’’ Namjoon remarks suddenly and soon enough you can hear the man coming down the stairs. Namjoon had the ability of super hearing and vision. When he was tired or unable to focus he sometimes slipped into stage of using his abilities without realizing. To add on that the man was also so intelligent that sometimes you wondered did he have super brain as well. Yoongi doesn’t bother to speak for you and instead heads straight to the coffee maker. He pours a steaming cup of coffee for himself and sit on the kitchen counter. Without any ceremony Yoongi begins to speak. ‘’So one of my old contacts connected me last night. he told me that the key we are after is actually being transported here into our city.’’ he tells casually and your jaw drops. ‘’So you are saying that our trip was waste of time?’’ You rub your face. Electro City was on the top when it came to developing new technology and new inventions. You and Yoongi had taken a trip to seek out the truth about a rumor that had been spreading in the spider web. Spider web was the term that underworld had given for a network of the people in the same profession. The key that Yoongi was talking about was told to be a device that could let you through any firewall or security system in the world. Possibilities with the device like that was endless. You could make whole nations to bow underneath you. The rumor that you had followed was that someone had already stolen the device form Big Hit, a high tech company that was specialized into security in all of its aspects. Sadly the rumor has been just a rumor so you had been left empty handed and the man who was supposed to have the device with few broken bones and black eye.
‘’Yup.’’ Yoongi answers with emotionless face. You want to break something and closed thing on your reach was Namjoon’s now empty coffee cup that you mashed on the floor. Your temper has always been irregular, in one moment you could be all sunshine and rainbows and for the next second you would be blinded by rage. You didn’t know were your powers matched with your personality or was your personality matched with your powers. You were force of nature, able to call for storms and electricity for your aid. Without word Namjoon gets up from his seat and goes pick up a broom. Luckily for the people around you, you didn’t release your rage against them without a reason and instead directed it to your environment. By now your companions are used to your quick temper and they rarely flinch when you let yourself go. You come back down from your anger and blink slowly. ‘’Oh shit, I’m sorry guys.’’ You tell awkwardly and hurry to help Namjoon to pick the broken pieces of the mug. ‘’Don’t worry about it.’’ Namjoon tells flashing a dimpled smile. ‘’Usually I’m the one who breaks stuff.’’ ‘’Well yeah because you are clumsy, not because you have hot temper.’’You sigh. Yoongi continues to look you cleaning the shards in quiet and sipping his coffee. ‘’I heard last night how you released some steam with Jimin.’’ Yoongi says innocently trying to distract you. Namjoon coughs awkwardly and gets up from the floor going to throw broken pieces of the mug away. ‘’So what?’’ You ask trying to sound annoyed but small smirk rises to your lips. ‘’Did you want to join?’’ You ask and wink to Yoongi who rolls his eyes for an answer. ‘’No, I wanted to sleep but it was almost impossible.’’ Yoongi tells and jumps down the kitchen counter. He has finally finished his drink. ‘’Speaking of Jimin do you know where he is? He wasn’t in his bed when I woke up.’’ ‘’I think he went for jog.’’ Namjoon answers and pushes his black hair backwards even though it slips back down right after. ‘’I see.’’ You turn your attention back to Yoongi who is about to exit the room. ‘’Hey Yoongles.’’ Yes?’’ Yoongi stops on his track. ‘’Make sure that this time we won’t be running after gossips.’’ ‘’Aye aye boss.’’ Yoongi answers with lazy wave and disappears from the room. You look after him with amused smile and return to continue your morning humming softly.

More Superhero Comics, Revealing My Reactionary and Facile Engagement with Art as Little More Than the Accrual of Social Capital, Benefiting Nobody But Myself, 4/7/19
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 4: The Tempest #5 (of 6), Alan Moore, Kevin O’Neill, Ben Dimagmaliw, Todd Klein: This is an often very funny issue, set up like a pasted-together UK edition of old US pre-Code horror and crime comics, which, in addition to being funny, plumps up the page count as the plot moves maybe two or three tics forward in advance of the very-last-issue-of-LoEG-ever. The conservative in me wonders why we’re being this digressive in the penultimate number of the entire saga, but then -- at least since “The Black Dossier” -- this project has been more about positioning various strands of fiction and their accrued cultural baggage against one another than telling a propulsive adventure story. Anyway: the realm of Faerie, having easily survived an attempted nuclear strike on the collective imagination by a military-corporate black ops fiction squad comprised entirely of various revamps of James Bond, has brought in every character from every game, comic, cartoon, TV show, movie and book reality with everything for a HUGE apocalypse!
Scenes of bedlam involve: the life story of Victorian painter and murderer Richard Dadd; cameos by Stardust the Super Wizard and David Britton’s Lord Horror; the oeuvre of musician Warren Zevon, brought to terrifying life; a Corbenesque image of a nude muscleman’s massive dick flapping into battle in 3-D; Mick Anglo’s Captain Universe, presented by Moore in unmistakable evocation of his own Marvelman/Miracleman stories of decades ago; a ghost wearing the word CRIME on his head a la Charles Biro’s Mr. Crime, the greatest American comic book horror host; at least one figure from the annals of racist caricature firing powerful sound waves from his mouth; a monster named Demogorgon, the leviathan of Populism, which the heroes allegorically cross as a footbridge en route to a safehouse named the Character Ark; a page-long parody of Batman (via the forgotten UK superhero playboy character the Flash Avenger), describing his origin as motivated entirely by hatred of the poor; a text feature telling of UK comics artist Denis McLoughlin, who worked consistently since the end of WWII, never made enough money to retire, and spent decades as an elderly man drawing for survival on titles he hated, eventually taking his own life in his 80s; and the secret of what happened to all the British superhero characters after the midcentury, which is that they were all eaten by Capitalism, pretty much. I laughed a bunch, but if you think LoEG is tedious shit, this probably won’t turn you around.

Savage Dragon #242, Erik Larsen, Ferran Delgado, Nikos Koutsis, Mike Toris: The latest installment of the longest-running Image comic written and drawn by one of the Image founders, now deeply dove into problematic network tv drama stuff. The Dragon’s relationship with his partner Maxine is still strained in the wake of her sexual assault, a video of which the Dragon viewed in the police archives; meanwhile, the mother of one of the Dragon’s young children has been telling them all the truth about their parentage, further disrupting the peace of the household. Also, a formerly aggressive sex robot has joined the gang, dressed as an anime maid. And, the Dragon reluctantly teams up with the mid-’00s-vintage sexy heroine character Ant (which Larsen purchased from creator Mario Gully a few years ago) to foil a scheme by elderly elites to project themselves into the bodies of mythic gods in order to provoke the Rapture. Most interesting to me, however, is a bonus segment in which Larsen presents newly-lettered pages of his preliminary solo work on “Spawn” #266 (Oct. 2016), which would later be filled out by contributions from Todd McFarlane, colorist FCO Plascenscia, and letterer Tom Orzechowski.
As usual, I prefer the ‘unfinished’ version (top) to the official release product (bottom).

Superman Giant #9, Erika Rothberg, ed.
&
Batman Giant #9, Robin Wildman, ed.
These are two of those 100-page DC superhero packages they sell for five bucks exclusively at Walmart (for now; later this year they’re gonna have them in comic book stores too), which marry one new 12-page story per issue with three full-length reprint comic books from elsewhere in the 21st century. I just wanted to know what was inside them. Here is what I found:
-The new Batman comic is written by Brian Michael Bendis as a very conspicuously all-ages prospect, where the story is about nothing more than what it’s about, and the title character is presented as a serious-minded but inquisitive and compassionate man of adventure. This issue -- just in time for the remix of “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus -- Batman and Green Lantern travel back to the Old West, trade in their superhero outfits for cowboy clothes, and meet up with Jonah Hex. Nick Derington draws the heroes smooth and squinting with Swanian sincerity, and Dave Stewart colors it all bright and sunny. This is not my thing at all, but it’s confident to the point of acting like almost a rebuke to the rest of the book, where literally everything else is chapter whatever of a nighttime doom ballad drawn by either Jim Lee or something trying very hard to look like him.
-Like:
I can spot the differences, sure - if nothing else, reading superhero comics trains you to spot differences in otherwise similar things. But, there is absolutely an aesthetic at work. The top page is from an issue of “Nightwing” that tied into the 2012 “Night of the Owls” crossover in the Batman titles, produced by a seven-person drawing and coloring team fronted by pencillers Eddy Barrows & Andres Guinaldo. The writer, Kyle Higgins, has Dick Grayson fight his semi-immortal great-grandfather, who is an assassin for the Court of Owls: one of the more popular recent Batman organizations of villainy, presented here as a fascist group mediating society’s function through murder from the gray space between social classes. The Graysons, therefore, are the Gray Sons, but Nightwing resists the pull of destiny by winning a big fight, slinging the villain over his shoulder, and walking away toward a better future of just beating the shit out of bad people instead of killing them, I think. The Batgirl story -- from 2011, written by Gail Simone -- is comparatively orthodox, finding the character gripped with uncertainty about the superhero life and going about some downtime character-building activities, though most of it’s a big fight with a villain with a tragic past. The penciller, Ardian Syaf, kind of has trouble blocking the action so that characters’ movements are clear; I think Syaf is best known for having his contract with Marvel terminated in 2017 for slipping what were widely interpreted as anti-Christian and antisemitic references to Indonesian politics into an X-Men comic.
-There is a whole lot of Jeph Loeb among the reprints. He is not a writer who has been in critical fashion for much the past two decades, but he has undoubtedly sold a lot of comics for DC, and they probably feel he can do it again. The Batman book is serializing (deep breath) “Hush”, a 2002-03 storyline notable for its extraordinarily easy-to-solve central mystery, and generally being a taped-together excuse for Jim Lee to draw as many popular Batman characters as possible across 12 issues; it sold like hot cakes. The highlight of chapter 9 is probably a bit where a three person fight ends in one panel, and then one of the characters leaves, and then a second character wakes up from unconsciousness and also leaves, and then the first character comes back and nurses the third (also unconscious) character back to health, and then Batman arrives, all in the transition between the aforementioned panel and the next, which takes place in the same room; such is the befuddling desire to race ahead to more spectacle. Jim Lee (with Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair) is indeed Jim Lee (et al.) throughout, though at one point the team drops a howler of a swordfighting panel where Batman’s blade appears to grows to JRPG length due to what I think is the colorist filling two whoosh lines with the same hue as the swords.
Meanwhile, the Superman book is serializing a 2004 storyline from “Superman/Batman” -- the series where Loeb has Superman describe the action on the page with his own Superman-branded captions, and Batman does the same with Bat-captions, and Superman says tomayto and Batman says tomahto -- in which the late Michael Turner, one of the rock star 2nd generation Image artists, illustrates a new introduction for Supergirl. But this isn’t quite the same comic that was originally published... can YOU spot the difference?
Is this like how Walmart won’t sell CDs that have an explicit content sticker, but with teen superhero g-strings? It’s hard to explain to younger readers how the low-rise/thong panties combo forever sealed the horniness of a generation of het male superhero artists into the late 1990s, and maybe DC doesn’t want to face that. Or, they’re just leery of how Turner slipping some peekaboo glimpse of Supergirl’s underpants or bare thighs into virtually every panel in which she is depicted below the waist might affect the marketability of the comic in 2019 - although I guess it could have happened in an earlier reprint somewhere too.
-The new Superman comic is a series of 12 splash pages depicting a race between Superman and the Flash. There is very little sense of speed, because Andy Kubert (inked by Sandra Hope, colored by Brad Anderson) draws the characters as frozen in time in a way that prioritizes muscular tension in the manner of contemporary superhero cover art; at one point the two characters part the sea with the force of their bodies, and it looks to me like they’re gesticulating in front of a theatrical backdrop. And, anyway, the story pulls back almost every other page to depict Batman standing on a ledge, or Lex Luthor in a sinister chair -- or some birds flying next to a building, or the Earth as viewed from space with streaks on it -- as the race occurs deep in the background or off to one side. The point is not excitement, but reflection, as imposed upon us by the between 13 and 21 narrative captions and/or dialogue balloons pasted atop all but the first page.
The writer is Tom King, whose “Mister Miracle” (with artist Mitch Gerads) gets a double-page advertisement later in the book, festooned with breathless blurbs from major media outlets. His narrator here is a little girl who is literally chained in captivity, clutching a Superman doll, and delivering her soliloquy in a manner of a superhero-themed TED talk with handclap repetitions on the nature of contradiction. Being faster than a speeding bullet is a CONTRADICTION. Being as strong as a locomotive is a CONTRADICTION. Leaping tall buildings in a single bound is a CONTRADICTION. Superman is about to lose the race, but then he wins, because to beat the Fastest Man Alive is... a contradiction. No wonder the GQ entertainment desk was blown away. DC comics do this kind of thing a lot, where they just have the writer tell you how great the characters are, and since you’re still reading superhero comics in the 21st century, you’re expected to pump your fists in recognition, because you and the writer and everyone at DC are just big ol’ fans... but I am not, because I am Jesus Christ, the only son of God.
-Elsewhere in the Superman book is an issue of “Green Lantern” from 2006, drawn by Ethan Van Sciver (inked with Prentis Rollins, colored by Moose Baumann), who is known today mostly as a conservative ‘personality’ online. He also netted more than half a million dollars last July in a crowdfunding campaign to make a 48-page comic book which he has not yet finished; funny to see an American right-winger on the French schedule. Funnier still to see the kind of people (mostly guys of a certain age) who mill around such personalities croaking about how diversity is ruining comics, because ALMOST EVERY FUCKING STORY IN BOTH OF THESE 100-PAGE BOOKS IS DRAWN BY EITHER SOME DUDE FROM THE 1990s OR SOMEBODY WORKING EXPLICITLY IN THAT STYLE, but - I guess when you’ve been pampered for so long, every paper cut feels like a ripped limb. Speaking of dismemberment, the writer here is Geoff Johns, who is often pegged as a superhero traditionalist, though he also has a grasp of gory pomp which occasionally pushes the comics he writes into a Venn diagram set with loud youth manga... at least in terms of how the action plays out, all broad and pained. So, needless to say, he’s currently writing “Doomsday Clock”, which is DC’s present attempt to extend the publication life of the valuable “Watchmen” property, so that they needn’t return it to the original creators, per the original writer, Alan Moore.
-To hear Alan Moore say it, the America’s Best Comics line was done on a work-for-hire basis as a means of ensuring prompt payment of the various creators from Jim Lee’s WildStorm, the original publisher. WildStorm was then acquired by DC (Jim Lee is now their co-publisher and chief creative officer), and Moore -- who has been (fairly) criticized in the past for taking ethical stances that cause financial harm to his artistic collaborators, who are in a less economically flexible position than writers in the comic book field -- allowed the line to continue under DC’s ownership, as to cancel everything would disadvantage everyone working on the titles. One of those titles, “Tom Strong”, was written by Moore and pencilled by Chris Sprouse for a while, and then there was a long line of guest creators, and then Moore and Sprouse came back when the ABC line wrapped, so that the concept could reach its logical termination point in an apocalyptic manner... Moore does love an apocalypse. The final story in the Superman book is a very recent, late 2018 issue of “The Terrifics”, in which we find an attempt to revive the DC-owned Tom Strong characters as players in broader DC stories. Jeff Lemire & José Luís are the primary creators. Jack Cole’s Plastic Man is there, as well as the John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake version of Mister Terrific. It’s a lot of offbeat characters; we even see Moore’s own parody of Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, because, I mean, Alan Moore does a lot of riffs on preexisting characters too, right? It’s a big blob of cartoon whimsy, filled with available characters running around. If they’re available, you might as well roll ‘em out, off the new releases rack and into a supermarket reprint package stacked in a box next to squeeze toys and discount Pokémon merchandise, which I bought, because it was really cheap.
