No purpose

With me fully graduating, everyone is talking about their plans for the rest of their life. All except me.

I find it hard to imagine myself in two, in five, hell in fifteen years doing anything close to going to college or a university or even working. My hobbies could be used as jobs but god the pay would suck and i don't want to end up like my father and just work all day. no hobbies, no friends. nothing but working and caring for family (and that's assuming I find anyone fancying me).

Everyone seems to have this certain calling, or at least some type of leadway where they feel comfortable with when it comes to afterschool plans. But I don't. I have no idea what I should. It makes me want to cry. It scares me.

I'm just scared I'll stay here, rotting away while my friends are successful and forget about me. I'm going to die alone here. I'm going to die with no one remembering me. Everyone who mattered to me will either be dead or several states away and have cut contact with me long before.

I just feeling so lacking in everything. Life, goals, plans. I don't feel real anymore. I don't even feel like I should be graduating. I feel I'm still suck in the eight grade, right before the pandemic took swarm. Back when I felt like I at least had a grasp around the world, what was happening around me.

Man on Wire

The act of walking on a wire is impressive within itself. Someone who's never been out of the country sees something like the twin towers being built and automatically says their destiny to walk on a wire from those buildings is amazing. The twin towers were as high as ever and some people can’t even balance just putting one foot in front of the other on the ground. This man Philippe Petit had great strength within mind & body. A lot of people wouldn’t even walk on the wire if it was 1 foot off the ground because they would be scared of the fall. When I picture it all I could imagine if it was me and I looked down I would panic and misstep and you cannot do that you have to have 1000% focus. Walking on a wire at a height really high is always associated with death which is the reason you can't do it. But not Philippe Petit, he was a person who wanted to push the boundaries even after his friend was like I don’t think you should be doing this, nothing stops him. I have great admiration for him because anything could have happened to him, yeah he had been walking on wires for years at that point but he wasn’t doing anything like what he set out to do that day. Everyone who watched it happen and heard about it had some kind of admiration for him. Honestly, even the cop who was supposed to arrest him had to stop and just watch it happen because it was like a “wow” moment. Philippe Petit was a determined man when it came to this goal, sneaking in and hiding from the security guards watching the place with determination because he did it all the time. I found the part when he twisted his ankle or something like that and he had to use crunches from a little bit he realized the crunches gave him a cover because people seem to give handicapped people leadway he went he peeped that he was even using them after he had healed because he no longer had to work so hard to get into the building because now he didn’t need a cover or extravagant way to get in. Which is completely true because 9 times out of 10 when people see I handicapped person in a situation where they need help and leave them alone because they’re trying to make their situation better or at least less stressful than it already is. Talking about one more than I love the support he got from his friend even though he thought the wire walking across the towers was a crazy idea. He understood how much it meant for him to complete the goal and he helped him get there with the help he could give even though he voice the opinion to Philippe like no this is a little crazy. Having a friend like that in your corner is a good thing to have really because even though they may not agree with you they believe in you for the fact that you believe in yourself.

Loveland is (still) in the air

I would love to know what immediate changes Gary Loveman made and when while introducing experiments and the use of data at Harrahs/Caesars Entertainment and especially how they were received.

I started at Caesars in 2017 and therefore had no overlap with Loveman although I'm sure I felt the impact of what he left behind. While I think we could have done a much better "thinking like a scientist" (test and control groups, creating a proof of concept, etc.), we certainly embraced the idea that we were not creating perfect experiments, just trying to make better decisions. The analytics department worked with massive amounts of data and was a very large group (split between advanced, hospitality, gaming, regional marketing, etc.) and were typically not using the same methods across teams (& likely running experiments across the same groups unknowingly).

Obstacles

Some groups had a hard time than others. The analytics group that worked with the Casino Marketing team were responsible for measuring and incentivizing the hundreds of "hosts" across the ~40 national properties. Hosts are responsible for interacting with high value guests to get them to come back to our properties, perhaps make their reservations, give them offers, etc. It's a very relationship based job and these hosts may have used their relationships with guests for the last 15-30 years to succeed and did not take well when we suggested running an experiment or asking them to change behavior because we saw benefit in the data results.

Digital marketing

Your classic group that is on board with experiments. This is the analytics group that would help our marketing team determine how to optimize guest experience and click through on our websites/emails/ads/etc. We would run A/B tests to determine if there was a certain layout that worked best and to understand differences in price sensitivity.

Natural Experiments

One thing that you could do was look for natural experiments, where you saw different actions and could try to understand the different behaviors as a result. We looked at the previous mailed (digital and physical) offers, the leadway before the date to be redeemed (i.e. "Use this coupon between x/x and x/x" and we would send it anywhere from 2 days to 2 months before), and the redemption rate. We saw vastly different behaviors for redemption rate depending on the time that an offer was sent and the age that the guest was! By making changes to when we would send offers, we were expecting significant increase in redemption rates.

Here are some commonly misused phrases in English.

1. Not "baited breath" but "BATED BREATH" Bated breath = to wait with bated breath means to hold one's breath or be in a state of anxious anticipation or suspense. Example: They listened with BATED BREATH as the emcee announced the winners of the contest. 2. Not "beckon call" but "BECK AND CALL" Beck and call = to be at someone's beck and call means to be ready and available to obey someone's commands or requests at any time. Example: The secretary is at the CEO's BECK AND CALL; they have to be ready to work at any time.

3. Not "could of, would of, should of" but "COULD HAVE, WOULD HAVE, SHOULD HAVE." Example: (1) She COULD HAVE been done with the task already if you hadn't started yelling at her. (2) She WOULD HAVE hit you with a wooden log if she could. (3) She SHOULD HAVE slammed the door in your face when she had the chance. 4. Not "doggy-dog" but "DOG-EAT-DOG" Dog-eat-dog = commonly used in the phrase "a dog-eat-dog world", it refers to a competitive or ruthless environment.  Example: Nobody wins in a DOG-EAT-DOG world.

5. Not "far be it of me" but "FAR BE IT FROM ME" Far be it from me = a phrase used to distance oneself from a potentially controversial statement; akin to "I usually don't do/say [blah blah blah]" Example: FAR BE IT FROM ME to tell you what to do, but I think you should consider the consequences before making a decision. 6. Not "for all intensive purposes" but "FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES" For all intents and purposes = often used to emphasize a situation is so close to being true that it doesn't matter whether it is completely accurate or not. Example: FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, the project is complete, even though there are a few minor details that still need to be addressed.

7. Not "I could care less" but "I COULDN'T CARE LESS" I couldn't care less = you don't care at all. You give 0 f*cks about something. Example: I COULDN'T CARE LESS if you fell off a cliff. 8. Not "leadway" but "LEEWAY" Leeway = refers to flexibility or freedom someone has to make decisions or take actions. Example: I'll give you some LEEWAY on the deadline, but I need to have the report by the end of the week.

9. Not "mute point" but "MOOT POINT" Moot point = refers to an issue or statement that is of no practical significance, usually because it had already been resolved or because the outcome is irrelevant. Example: Whether that suit suits you is a MOOT POINT if your crush rejects your invitation to a date. 10. Not "nip it in the butt" but "NIP IT IN THE BUD" Nip it in the bud = to stop something at an early stage before it could grow into a bigger problem. Example: That behaviour needs to be NIPPED IN THE BUD before it escalates.

11. Not "no holes barred" but "NO HOLDS BARRED" No holds barred = without any restrictions or limitations. Example: She destroyed his arguments NO HOLDS BARRED, attacking every little mistake. 12. Not "one in the same" but "ONE AND THE SAME" One and the same = used to describe two things that are identical or indistinguishable from one another; usually used to emphasize that there is no difference between the two things despite the appearance or perception of difference. Example: Viktoria Love and Caragh McMahon are ONE AND THE SAME person; the author just uses different names depending on the genre of the book.

13. Not "peak your interest" but "PIQUE YOUR INTEREST" Pique your interest = to arouse or stimulate your curiosity or interest in something; it catches your attention. Example: The seminar about Artificial Intelligence PIQUED MY INTEREST.

#136 - Be - Pain Of Salvation (2004)

After a little break, I am back on my reviewing tendencies. So within my musical ventures I have found myself getting quite involved with the Progressive Metal scene, especially with newer bands out there, but never fully, head to toes, diving into more “classic” bands. Well I have decided to express my joys and wonder to such classic Prog Metal bands, like Voivod, Opeth, and maybe even a little bit of Symphony X. I think, though, there is no other band from the starting periods of Prog Metal like Pain Of Salvation. This Swedish band of merry misfits took me a while to get into, but after I did I have been really loving their very varied sound with albums like The Perfect Element Part 1 and In The Passing Light Of Day. But, while each album they try something new, on their 2004 release of Be, the band would get a lot more verbose in their ways and create an album filled with songs ranging from folk, jazz, musicals, and gospel.

I find myself seeing this as the band’s turning point away from their harder structures as they venture to new, unseen territories here, and with it comes a mixed grab bag of some really solid material. What I most enjoy about this album is the huge cinematic focus the music brings. This album most particularly reminds me of Frances The Mute or The Clockwork Fable with each song having tiny moments in between giving leadway into this grand narrative. This album, in fact, feels like a big movie in some way, with the whole reality bending concept, and with it comes a new enjoyment for me as a whole. Each song feels like a new scene in this cinematic journey through god complexes, greed, religion, sex, and loss, resulting in a work that can be seen as a modern day Greek tragedy.

Musically, this is a very wide ranged sounding album, to both its benefits and its troubles. For its pleasures, I think the lack of any cohesive sound really makes this release way more interesting, and fun. You do not know what you might get on this record, and each song has something new to give and bring. I found myself loving the more musical ebb and flows like on Dea Pecuniae and Martius/Nauticus II. It really gives this a rewarding and expertly crafted experience for me since each song really does give you way more than you would expect.

However, to the album’s detriment, with such a big narrative and a big idea, there are moments here that feel very fillery, and even some songs on here never quite hit the same mark as others. I find the more gospel and folk songs, while good in their own right, never get the same oomph for me as say Deus Nova or Nihil Morari. I can absolutely appreciate a very complex and varied album, but I think what makes Pain Of Salvation’s sound so good is their energy and expression. That rough, dirty, and almost poisonous sound has always been a Pain Of Salvation staple, so with some tracks loosening the grip on that ideology, it makes this album feel very disjointed in presentation.

I think the best way to try and counteract this is probably to listen to the songs in the perspectives of the characters singing them, whether it is the lustful Mr Money, or the godly Animae. With the varying perspectives, it could help the odd effect this album brings.

I think though, this album is stronger than not. It reminds me of equally strong but wild rock operas, but there are so many out there that it’s a little hard to say. I guess you gotta pick and choose then.

While not my favorite release these guys made, it does contain some of my favorite songs the band has released. It is big, grand, really different from anything they’ve released, and an album that, while in some cases disjointed, still feels really tightly knit in its presentation. Highly recommend giving this a listen, but only if you are into the more prestigious pose of more wild rock operas like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or Frances The Mute. A solid effort from a great Prog Metal band.
