Thinking about Leadership

I often ponder leadership and the attributes of successful leaders. This week I participated in an American Council on Education series of workshops on leadership and presented at the SUNY Executive Leadership workshop. At both activities, I was surrounded by hundreds of academic leaders who were thoughtfully exploring how they can best lead within their institutions and from what vantage point they could make the greatest difference. Whether you are a student leader, a faculty leader, or a formal or informal leader at Buffalo State, we are all pressed to advance the college from our locations within the campus.

As I thought of leadership, I was reminded of Corey Grant (junior, majoring in theater), who wrote and shared with the Buffalo State community a poem called “The Gift of Leadership” early last fall during the Student Union Bash.

The Gift of Leadership By Corey Grant A leader is willing to go beyond the lengths required A leader makes it their duty to serve their community A leader does not sit back as things seem shaky but takes their stand with courage and bravery determined to correct the wrongs The Gift of Leadership A leader causes others to think of their actions A leader inspires future generations to make a difference in their society Standing in the ranks of truth and sobriety. A leader does not resist but persist Persist to the point of success, refusing to accept less Knowing that their faith is fit for the test The Gift of Leadership A leader defies the odds and takes the things they have learned to an unexpected level A level where many may view to be impossible A level that encourages those around them to thrust forward no matter the obstacle The Gift of Leadership A leader does not remain dormant A leader is the voice for the voiceless Speaking the truth without any hesitation; causing growth and elevation The Gift of Leadership A leader recreates the sense of family where there was nothing but tragedy; giving hope for tomorrow in a world full of sorrow A leader is a person with a vision because the progress and success of our people is their mission Yes, this is LEADERSHIP! It is clear that Corey sees leadership as aspiring to great service. Let all members of our Buffalo State community embrace our aspirations to lead in ways that benefit Buffalo State and the many communities we seek to positively transform.
