Magna Tolvan was a cyborg working for the Empire. A promising officer trained to be the best. She believed in the Imperial propoganda and desired order to bring peace. Not just peace in the galaxy, but also within herself. A stickler for the rules and an expert on protocol. Always strove for perfect order with those she was in charge of and bemoaned the lack of it when under other's leaderdship.

She was demoted several times for being unable to stop a certain rogue archeologist. Eventually, she left the Empire, though not entirely by choice, and joined the Rebel Alliance. Her true calling was always to make the galaxy better, but she had finally found a place where it felt right.

She quickly fell for Doctor Aphra even though they were always in opposition to each other. That led her close to death and the end of life as she knew it as is common for Aphra's lovers. They fought and kissed and betrayed each other. Just to do it all again. She still loved Aphra, but also she hated her.

She had a rocky introduction to Aphra's other ex, Sana Starros, but they grew close. They both worked for the Rebellion at this point, and Aphra wasn't in either of their lives. This gave them plenty of time together to bond over their shared experiences and mourn Aphra every time she "died."

Also, for the record, this was the first canon* queer kiss seen in Star Wars.

The second was an issue later.

The third two issues after that.

Followed immediately by this.

*The MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has many same sex kisses, but it is four layers of noncanon. Being a no longer canon game, was dubiously canon at the time, chosen player gender, and depends on player choice of who to romance if any at all. However, that doesn't mean I shouldn't mention [player character] and Lord Cytharat or Dr. Lemda Avesta as the first queer kisses seen in Star Wars regardless of canon.

  Intuitively, the picture resonates.  We’ve all had the petty-tyrant boss; the person who loves the sound of their own voice and is oblivious to the resentment and de-motivation they’re engendering.

And most of us can relate to the manager who loves to roll up his sleeves and jump in on the line.

Listen well

Speak well. Listen. Stop talking. I tell myself this on a daily basis. I find it so frustrating to talk to someone, only to later realize they really didn't listen to a thing I said, or worse, only half listened and made all the wrong assumptions. 

Then to think I could be doing this to someone else is, well, horrifying. I worry that I could be imposing this frustration on others. I know how angry it makes me feel, how unimportant.

There are some little things you can do to stay engaged. Ask questions. You have to pay enough attention to ask the right ones; otherwise you look foolish! And remember, if you are talking the whole time, you simply can't be listening. People want to be heard, just like you do.

So when you are having a conversation with one other person, or in a group meeting; put down your phone, ipad, laptop. Stop checking your email. Listen to what is going on around you. And make your words wise ones. What you say matters, what you hear matters even more.
