The Importance of Asbestos Abatement and Mold Remediation Services
If you've ever walked into an old home or building, you've probably noticed that sense of history in the air. But there’s something else lurking in older properties—dangerous materials like asbestos, mold, and lead paint. These hidden hazards may not be immediately visible, but their impact on your health and the safety of your home is substantial. That’s where Asbestos Abatement Services, Mold Remediation Services, and Lead Paint Removal come in. These essential services provide protection and peace of mind by eliminating the unseen risks within your living space.
Tumblr media
In this article, we’ll explore why asbestos, mold, and lead paint are significant health hazards and why professional services are necessary to eliminate them. We'll also touch on Indoor Air Quality Testing, another key component of ensuring your home remains safe and breathable.
What is Asbestos and Why is it Dangerous?
Asbestos was once considered a miracle material. It’s fire-resistant, strong, and provides excellent insulation. Sounds perfect, right? Unfortunately, asbestos also comes with a deadly catch. When disturbed, it releases tiny fibers into the air that can be inhaled, lodging in your lungs and causing long-term damage. Over time, this exposure can lead to serious illnesses like mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.
While the use of asbestos has been restricted, many older buildings still contain asbestos in insulation, flooring, and ceiling tiles. That’s where asbestos removal contractors come into play. These certified professionals specialize in safely removing asbestos, protecting you from exposure.
Why You Need Asbestos Abatement Services
Attempting to handle asbestos removal yourself is a serious risk. If even a small amount of asbestos dust is released during the process, it could contaminate your home and put you and your family in danger. Professional Asbestos Abatement Services use specialized tools and safety gear to contain and remove asbestos without releasing harmful fibers into the environment.
The Role of Asbestos Remediation Companies
Beyond simple removal, asbestos remediation companies focus on a comprehensive solution. They identify all areas of concern, create a remediation plan, and ensure your home is completely free of asbestos. Their goal is to protect your family by removing every trace of this dangerous material.
Understanding Mold: A Hidden Health Hazard
Mold is another silent invader in homes. Although it may seem harmless, mold can grow and spread quickly in damp environments, particularly after a flood or water leak. If left unchecked, mold can damage your property and lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, allergies, and asthma.
Why Mold Remediation Services Are Critical
Mold is not something you want to take lightly. Sure, you might try to clean up small patches of mold on your own, but larger infestations require professional attention. Mold Remediation Services handle the problem from start to finish. From identifying the source of moisture that caused the mold growth to safely removing it, they ensure the mold is completely eradicated from your home.
Certified Mold Inspection & Remediation Services
Before mold can be removed, you need to know exactly where it’s hiding. Certified mold inspection & remediation services use advanced techniques to identify even the smallest mold growths. After locating the mold, they develop a plan to remove it effectively and prevent it from coming back.
Mold Clean Up Near Me: Why Local Services Matter
Searching for “mold clean up near me” can yield several results, but why is it important to choose a local mold remediation expert? For one, local services understand the unique environmental challenges in your area. They know the specific conditions that contribute to mold growth, whether it’s seasonal humidity or frequent rainstorms. Plus, choosing a local service means faster response times when you need them most.
Lead Paint: A Lingering Danger in Older Homes
If you live in a home built before 1978, chances are high that it contains lead-based paint. Lead was commonly used in paint because it increased durability and helped colors remain vibrant. Unfortunately, we now know that exposure to lead paint—especially during renovations or if the paint is chipping—can be dangerous, particularly for children. Lead poisoning can lead to developmental delays, learning difficulties, and even seizures in severe cases.
The Need for Certified Lead Paint Removal
Removing lead paint is not a simple task. DIY methods often do more harm than good, releasing toxic lead dust into the air. Certified lead paint removal services follow strict safety protocols to ensure that every speck of lead is removed without contaminating your home. They also perform thorough testing to confirm that your home is completely lead-free before completing the job.
Indoor Air Quality Testing: Your First Line of Defense
You can’t always see or smell the hazards in your home, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Indoor air can be filled with contaminants, from mold spores to asbestos fibers to chemical fumes. Indoor Air Quality Testing provides a comprehensive overview of what’s floating around in your home’s air.
Indoor Air Quality Testing Companies Near Me: Why You Should Hire One
When searching for "indoor air quality testing companies near me," it’s important to hire a service that specializes in identifying a wide range of airborne pollutants. These companies use specialized equipment to test for everything from asbestos to mold and lead dust, ensuring your home is safe to breathe in.
The Importance of a Home Air Quality Test
A home air quality test provides peace of mind, particularly after completing services like asbestos abatement or mold remediation. It’s a critical step to ensure that all harmful particles have been removed and that your home is safe for you and your family.
Home Asbestos Removal: Trust the Experts
Just like mold and lead paint, asbestos requires a careful and controlled approach. Home asbestos removal services are crucial in older homes where asbestos may still be present. These professionals take every precaution to safely remove asbestos-containing materials, ensuring your home remains a safe haven.
Residential Mold Removal: Protecting Your Home and Health
Mold doesn’t just affect your home’s structure; it can have serious health consequences for the people living inside. Residential mold removal focuses on getting rid of mold at its source, eliminating any health risks and preventing future outbreaks.
Conclusion
Your home should be your safe place—a place where you and your family can relax, breathe easy, and feel secure. But hidden dangers like asbestos, mold, and lead paint can undermine that safety, putting your health at risk. That’s why it’s so important to rely on Asbestos Abatement Services, Mold Remediation Services, Lead Paint Removal, and Indoor Air Quality Testing to ensure your home is free of these harmful substances.
These services, carried out by professionals, don’t just remove immediate threats; they provide long-lasting peace of mind. By investing in the safety of your home today, you protect the health and well-being of your family for years to come.
FAQs
1. How do I know if my home contains asbestos? An asbestos inspection performed by certified professionals can identify whether your home contains asbestos materials.
2. Can I remove mold by myself? Small areas of mold can be cleaned with household products, but larger infestations require professional mold remediation to ensure complete removal.
3. Is lead paint dangerous even if it’s not chipping? Yes, lead paint can release harmful dust, especially during renovations or if it starts to deteriorate. Certified lead paint removal is essential for safety.
4. What does indoor air quality testing include? Indoor air quality testing measures levels of pollutants like mold spores, asbestos fibers, and chemical fumes to ensure your air is safe to breathe.
5. How long does asbestos removal take? The time required for asbestos removal depends on the size and scope of the project, but professionals can provide an estimate after an inspection.

Somebody other than me cares!
For only the second time in the last decade or more, my personal obsession is in the news and I'm incredibly excited. "Below the fold," in old newspaper jargon, but at least somebody's trying to do something and some newspapers noticed. When you're as starved for validation as I am, it only takes that much attention to excite me.
Tumblr media
Amudalat Ajasa and Carolyn Van Houten, "Lead paint upended this boy’s life. Now the EPA is trying to eliminate the threat. The Environmental Protection Agency is about to issue strict limits on lead dust, which poses a threat to millions of children across the United States," Washington Post. Oct 19, 2024 (non-paywall link)
Lead was used as a paint additive from Victorian times up until the late 1970s for a couple of reasons. It made a bright white pigment that didn't fade quickly, it was shiny, and most importantly to the Victorians, it tolerated harsh cleaning chemicals well, which they thought was important to reducing the spread of disease.
(On a local note for here in St. Louis MO USA, it also almost single-handedly propped up the local economy in this town for that whole century, thanks to the huge lead mines south of town and our ability to export products to the whole world via our port on the Mississippi river. Almost all of the abandoned factory and warehouse buildings down here in South St. Louis are contaminated former lead-paint businesses.)
Lead paint though has an even bigger problem than lead pipes, though: over time, it starts shedding lead dust, and children are incredibly vulnerable to lead dust, breathing it in and/or swallowing it. And it takes very little lead dust to permanently damage a growing mind, destroying the parts of the brain that control impulses and the ones that down-regulate emotions.
This is why lead paint was outlawed in the late 1970s. But there was no law requiring it to be removed from (frankly, nearly all) surfaces. Instead, there was a voluntary lead abatement program, and even it only applied to residential property. Homeowners and apartment owners could borrow money from the nearest S&L, pay contractors to rip out and replace all the lead-dust tainted windows, carpets, plaster walls, and so forth and replace them with clean new vinyl-clad or latex-painted bits. They could then submit the receipts with their taxes and get a 100% refundable tax credit.
But they weren't able to make it mandatory because of intense lobbying by openly-racist slumlords, who didn't want to lead abate their properties even it was free because that's telling them what to do with their property, who didn't think their black tenants "deserved" refurbished apartments. That's also why it's illegal to disclose, in sales or in rental contracts, that your property has been through lead abatement; doing so is "unfair" to those '70s slumlords.
And besides, Reagan canceled the whole program halfway though his first term. To bend over backwards to be fair to Reagan, they weren't still getting many applications; everybody who was going to do so voluntarily already had. (Free money for home improvements has that effect.)
About a decade ago, a Reuters reporter used FOIA to demand state health departments turn over their records on childhood lead testing. Almost half of them don't keep any. Most only track it at the state level or maybe county level. Missouri's one of the only states that tracks it to the census-tract level, tracks where kids who are lead poisoned live to within a couple of blocks. And the map of apartments that didn't go through lead abatement, here in Missouri, perfectly maps onto the homicide data.
As someone who was pretty badly lead poisoned as a teenager myself, and as someone who's spent most of his life living in or near lead-poisoned apartments, I'm obsessed with this and ever since the Reuters article came out I've been begging every politician or candidate I interact with to bring back the late '70s lead abatement tax credit and this time make it mandatory to test before selling or leasing a home. Even when St. Louis, with its nominally, mostly progressive mayor got huge uncommitted funds dumped on her, from ARPA and from the Rams-relocation-fraud settlement, I couldn't get any politician to care about this. Their constituents weren't demanding it, so it couldn't be done.
The Washington Post reported, today, that the US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a rule to do just that. No tax credit provision, so they're being fought tooth and nail by people who don't want to make property sellers and landlords pay for it out of pocket, but the proposed rule is on the docket, potentially to take effect mid next year. Somebody other than me noticed. Somebody other than me cares.
If you are like the average person (to my distress) the main thing you want to know is "what can I do to protect myself or my kids?"
This is a shitty way to think because let me tell you, if your kid grows up on the same block as a lead-poisoned kid, your kid is going to grow up with C-PTSD from the resulting violence. Your kids aren't safe until everybody's kids are safe.
I didn't convince you? You've given up on keeping everybody else's kids safe, too?
If you have a painted surface anywhere on your property that existed prior to 1976, you should assume that there is lead paint on it. Older chain-link fences almost certainly. Wooden single-pane windows, 100% likely. If you have plaster, instead of drywall, interior walls in your house, then neither the walls nor the floorboards nor the carpets are safe. They will tell you these surfaces can be rendered safe by painting over them with latex paint; anybody who tells you this is whistling past the graveyard.
Do not have or raise kids in a house or apartment like that. Either abate the lead or move. Yes, even if it's more expensive; the alternative is to raise a child who may never work and has a high likelihood of spending most of their life in and out of jail.
If it's too late for that, and your child is already lead poisoned, don't give up hope entirely, but understand that the interventions that show promise for such kids are hard to find and aren't 100% reliable.
The most important thing you can do is investigate the concept of "trauma-informed schools," and demand, as part of your child's IEP, that his teacher and any associated staff get trauma-informed schooling trained. (Your kid will not be the only one who benefits.)
Children with profoundly impaired impulse control and/or profoundly impaired emotional down-regulation skills can be taught to do better, but that requires that they be given the extra time it will take them to do so, and the privacy, and the calm quiet space, especially when they're very young and just learning. Their brains don't do this naturally, so they don't do them quickly; hold them to the same standard of behavior as everybody else but until they spend a decade or more practicing and grow up more, after you remind them, give them enough time to obey.
But believe me when I tell you this: lead abatement and behavioral education are cheaper and better than prison.

Excerpt - As The Rain Pours
As I struggled to shuffle my heavy feet across the streets of West City, it felt as though the pouring rain was determined to wash away any traces of Gu Xi Cheng in my mind. Each droplet that fell upon my face carried with it a bittersweet memory, threatening to dissolve the recollections that had woven themselves deeply into the fabric of my heart.
The sky above was a tumultuous canvas, streaked with shades of gray and painted with the melancholy notes of a storm. The city seemed to mirror my inner turmoil, its alleys and corners shrouded in mist and shadow, whispering secrets that danced in the damp air. The rhythmic patter of raindrops on pavement served as a constant reminder of our fateful encounter, an innocent afternoon that had changed the course of our lives forever.
Just as we had met amidst the rain on that fateful day, our reunion would unfold beneath the same watery veil. Destiny had orchestrated this convergence, leading us back to the very place where it all began. It was a full circle, an echo of emotions that had long been dormant, waiting for their moment to resurface.
I walked through the deserted streets, my footsteps echoing hollowly against the wet asphalt. The weight of my decision pressed heavily upon my chest, the gravity of its consequences almost suffocating. Gu Xi Cheng's presence had lingered within me like a haunting melody, an indelible mark that refused to fade. But now, it was time to bid farewell to the echoes of his touch, the whispers of his voice.
The rain intensified, its intensity reflecting the tumultuous storm raging within my heart. I sought solace in the cold embrace of the downpour, as if each droplet held the power to cleanse my soul. With each step, I shed a layer of the past, leaving behind fragments of a love that had once bloomed beneath the same relentless rain.
As I neared our meeting place, the park bench beneath the towering willow tree, my heart quickened its pace. A mix of anticipation and trepidation coursed through my veins, intertwining like the branches of the tree above. I could almost feel Gu Xi Cheng's presence, his essence lingering in the air, reaching out to me like a ghostly hand.
As I approached the bench, I noticed a figure standing beneath the willow tree, drenched in the same rain that enveloped me. It was him, his silhouette etched against the backdrop of gray. Gu Xi Cheng's gaze met mine, and for a moment, time stood still. The world around us faded into a blur, leaving only the two of us, bound by a shared history that defied the constraints of time and space.
The rain continued to pour, cascading around us in a symphony of emotions. With every droplet that washed over our bodies, it felt as if the weight of our past was being gently rinsed away. The downpour masked the tears that welled in my eyes, mingling with the raindrops, a cleansing release of all that had burdened my soul.
In that moment, amidst the rain-soaked air, I made my decision. I would bid farewell to Gu Xi Cheng, not with resentment or regret, but with gratitude for the love we had shared. It was time to let go, to allow the rain to wash away the remnants of what once was, freeing both of us to find our own paths.
As we stood there, a silent understanding passed between us. No words were necessary. Our eyes spoke the unspoken, conveying a deep appreciation for the beauty and pain we had experienced together. With a gentle nod, we acknowledged the end of our journey, the closure we both sought.
And just like that, the rain began to subside. The storm within me abated, leaving behind a newfound clarity. As the clouds parted, revealing a glimmer of sunlight, I felt a sense of liberation, an opening to embrace the future that lay ahead.
I turned away from the park bench, my steps lighter than they had been in a long while. The raindrops danced upon my skin, their touch no longer a reminder of what had been lost, but a gentle reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.
As I walked away from that park, leaving Gu Xi Cheng and the memories we had created behind, I knew that the rain had served its purpose. It had brought us together and now, it had ushered us apart, cleansing our souls and setting us free. And as the sun emerged from behind the dissipating clouds, casting its warm glow upon the streets of West City, I took a deep breath, ready to embrace a new beginning.

Yuta loves pleasing you, loves to see you unravel in front of him over and over until you’re a withering mess.
Bare and lying comfortably on the bed upon his stomach, his face is immersed between your thighs. His hair’s already a bit tousled due to the bunching of your fingers from moments ago.
Moments ago, your lover started off as usual—hands snaked around your thighs; mild pants of his breath scorched against the inner skin of said thighs; meager, chaste kisses trailed over the traces of his breath; teased you further as he barely daubed the outside of your glistening folds, held the painting back until he thought you were ready for more.
The image of a withering mess doesn’t begin to form until he delves in, tongue pressing flat against your flesh, then leisurely lapping lengthy, vertical lines. Your back arches and a delightful sigh leaves your lips, pleased to finally have his mouth on your sex. At the exquisite sight, a small smirk spreads over Yuta’s face and is stuck throughout his brushes.
He takes his time, continuing the pace and adds little circular motions here and there. Suddenly, you gasp and your hips rut up at the insertion of one finger. One quickly becomes two. The pace of the fingering is the same as your lover’s tongue, now caressing your clit—painfully steady. Nevertheless, your heavy moans attest to your rising pleasure.
When your first climactic waves descend, you’re unsure if it’s because of the deeper scissoring with the bending of his fingers or because the strokes against your nerves are broad and encompassing, so much that you swear Yuta can’t be only licking your clit. With each swipe, tingles burst and blossom over your body.
To ensure your appetite is whetted, he withdraws his mouth from your flesh, but replaces his mouth with his thumb. Adjusting himself, your love raises his body to hover over yours. As his mouth finds a new temporary home around your tit, you hoist yourself up for a more comfortable position.
Unlike the laps upon your sex, his tongue flicks your nub rapidly while his free hand kneads the same breast roughly. Although most of his attention is on your mound, he still makes an effort to rub your nether lips and move his digits within you.
Before long, you’re beyond a state of unraveling. You always love to get lost in Yuta’s strong gaze during the intimacy, but you force yourself to shut your trembling eyes to keep them from falling out of your head. You’re losing sanity fast, can’t even grip onto Yuta’s body or hair like you did seconds ago, and you’re drifting back towards the mattress. On top of it all, your breathing falters in short gasps, like you’re drowning in water.
You’ve experienced euphoria with Yuta many times over before, but even euphoria can have its own limits.
With the sliver of energy you have left, you manage to whimper, “Soccer, soccer…”
Immediately, his motions cease, his muscles stiffening from the safe word. Despite how he’s shocked since you rarely use it, your love respects you without hesitation. Instantly, his mouth retracts from your body. His smirk fades, along with his hazy eyes, and his demeanour is replaced by widened eyes and an agape mouth, lips glossy from your former honey and his excess saliva.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” worries Yuta. Carefully, he draws his fingers away too and, after wiping his hand on the bed sheet, cups your cheeks in both palms.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” you muster a weak nod. “Just a little too much for me. I just need a breather.”
He mumbles reassurances, tells you that you two can stop for the night as both of you recline onto the bed. He wraps an arm around your shoulder and pulls you close to his chest.
Several minutes pass. You’ve come down from your intense high and start to leave innocent kisses on Yuta’s chest. The kisses descend over his defined abdomen, your lips not losing traction any time soon. He softly hums, realizing you and the kisses are reaching a not-so innocent territory. His fingers comb through your hair while he eyes you resting in the space between his legs, lightly stroking his possession.
“You really don’t have to, you know,” he reasons, yet his burgeoning desire says otherwise.
Shaking your head with a gentle smile, you peck a chaste kiss on his tip.
“But I want to…”
Yuta doesn’t dispute any further and lets you take the lead.
Even though he’s not fully erect yet, you start to pump him with your mouth, liking the way you could feel him grow with each bob and suck. Once his desire is firm, you continue to enclose his girth, but only the top-half, while one hand tightens and pumps him by the base.
As you inhale his possession, you notice a different taste in your mouth developing. You abate the speed of your stroking. Peeking an eye open, you sink your tongue through the slit of his tip, grazing the lustrous trickle of his precome. Yuta’s eyes are closed, but his face constricts at the sensation, even his cock throbs ever so slightly.
Wanting to drawl more reactions from him, you play with only his doused tip, followed by concentrated suction upon it with sunken cheeks. The rise of Yuta’s uneven moans signals his nearing culmination.
To aid him to his destination, you let loose and the back of your throat welcomes the entirety of his girth. Your eyes are shut from the pleasurable pain, so you don’t notice the receiver crane his neck with a hanging mouth to steal a glance at you.
”Oh, God, fuck, I’m coming, I’m coming—”
There’s a pause before his cock twitches as his seed spurts. You accept every drop with a couple of swallows.
Tumblr media
Tucking yourself under the sheets with Yuta, you look up at him lovingly.
“Part two in the morning? If you’re game?”
A glint can be seen in his eye. He flashes you a cheeky grin.
“You’re on.”
In contrast to the evening’s actions, your love peppers your face with a thousand kisses, causing you to giggle in fits, as he switches off the bedside lamp.

@badthingshappenbingo
Prompt: gunshot wound
Relationship: analogince
TW: guns, injuries, blood, PTSD flashbacks, mentions of death (not any of the main characters)
Masterlist
Roman adjusted his grip on his beaten up sword, shoulder pressed into the wall, the rough concrete scraping against his skin. He could hear Virgil’s steady breathing beside him, just a slight bit faster than it usually was, all their muscles tensed where their side was pressed into Roman’s.
Roman craned his neck, trying to see down past the darkness encroaching from that side, the only light coming from the camp up ahead.
“Where is he?” Virgil hissed through clenched teeth. Roman saw them adjust their grip on the bo staff in their hands.
“Give him a little longer,” Roman whispered back, slipping one hand behind him to rest on Virgil’s thigh, squeezing it in gentle comfort. “He can handle himself.”
Virgil pressed their head back against the wall as they waited, breath misting in the cold air, the night silent except for the occasional shouts from the nearby camp.
Just as Roman was about to suggest they go look for their missing boyfriend, a deafening noise split the air. A sound he hadn’t heard in years, one that made the blood in his veins turn to ice.
Two more gunshots rang through the small alleyway and Roman felt like his lungs were filling up with liquid fire, smoke coursing through his veins and sparks crawling up his windpipe. And all he could see was red, red spread out on the floor like a picture perfect painting, like a poem, like the horrifying reality that he was dying.
A hand closed around his, rough, callused skin smoothing over his carefully. “Ro, deep breaths,” That familiar voice, deep voice said, gentle as it always was with him.
Roman looked up at Virgil, their brow furrowed in worry, eyes darting back to the camp, where the gunshots had come from.
He forced in a breath, dragging it through the thick smoke choking him, doing his best to mirror Virgil’s slow, steady breathing. They tapped out a familiar pattern on Roman’s palm, one they had both used so many times before, when Virgil woke up gasping from nightmares or Roman froze when a branch snapped too loudly or Logan had to admit that he didn’t know. His breathing slowed, red tinged vision replaced with the dark purple of Virgil’s hoodie.
“Logan?” Roman choked out, because he had to be here, he couldn’t do this again. Blood red and screaming and you were too late, you can’t save him.
Virgil turned around sharply, and a second later Roman saw what had alerted them. Logan walked into the alleyway, looking for all the world like nothing was wrong, none of the supplies he was supposed to get in his hands.
“We need to leave,” He said curtly once he had made it to where they stood, Roman still tightly clenching Virgil’s hand as he tried to regain his breathing.
The relief he felt at Logan’s arrival quickly made place for sharp irritation. Did the smug bastard really think he could scare Roman half to death and then show up without the supplies and act like everything was just fine and dandy?
“Excuse me sir,” Roman burst out, still sounding out of breath and shaky, as Logan strode resolutely away from the camp, where everything they needed to survive currently resided. “Where the hell do you think you’re going?”
“Home,” Logan bit out.
Roman looked to Virgil, hoping for some support. The other just shrugged, picking their bo staff off the ground and following after Logan. Roman huffed in frustration.
“We can’t go home yet,” He said, jogging slightly to catch up, “You didn’t get the supplies.” And Roman sure as hell hadn’t had a near panic attack for nothing. If he wouldn’t be able to sleep for the next week, he at least wanted some pay off for it.
“The mission went wrong,” Logan said, voice still cool and detached.
“And you said it couldn’t!” Logan has spent hours repeating just how foolproof the plan was. “We need this! We need it to survive, Logan.”
“He’s right,” Virgil said, head ducked in their hoodie and anxiously chewing their lip, “We’ve only got rations for a few more days, and that’s if we stretch it.”
“See, even the emo agrees, we have to go back,” Roman said decidedly, pulling on Logan’s sleeve to get him to stop. Logan only kept walking.
“We’re not going back.”
“So what, you’d rather die of starvation or radiation poisoning? You were supposed to fix it, pocket protector, and now we’re even worse off than before. We used the last of our materials for this.”
“We are not going back,” Logan hissed out decidedly, a fire burning in his eyes. Something in Roman’s gut told him to drop it, told him that Logan was this close to snapping, and that if he kept pressing this, he would be the one to push him over the edge.
“Fine, have it your way, but when I painfully die of radiation poisoning, I know who I’ll be blaming,” he hissed out before stalking to the front of the group, leading them back into the untamed wilderness where they had made camp.
Virgil averted their eyes from Logan’s wounded expression, following Roman into the brush.
They followed the familiar track to their camp, the weighted silence pressing on them, stifling every thought of making friendly conversation. Roman occasionally turned to shoot a glare at Logan, who didn’t return it, only staring down at the ground in order not to trip over the roots lacing the soil.
Roman stomped ahead of the group, Virgil right behind him, leaving Logan to bring up the rear, neither of them noticing the pained furrow of his brow, or the way his arm came around to clench tightly around his middle.
After a while, Virgil registered that the footsteps that were supposed to be following them had fallen still, the only sound in the forest the soft crunching of Roman marching on ahead. They turned around quickly, scared they had lost Logan to the forest, terrified that once again, they had failed to protect their family.
The terror abated quickly when they found Logan, leaning heavily against a tree but otherwise safe and unharmed.
“You okay there Lo?” They asked, strolling over. They could feel Roman’s disapproving glare pricking on the back of their neck, clearly still not over Logan abandoning the plan. He was always good at holding a grudge.
“I’m fine,” Logan assured them, and something tight and strangled in his voice did not seem to match up with that statement at all. Virgil looked at him in concern. “You sure about that one buddy?”
Logan set his face and pushed off the tree, taking a few steady, but hesitant steps forward. His breathing was oddly ragged.
He froze for a beat, before his gaze drifted to Virgil, carefully blank and detached.
“Virgil? I think you better catch me now.”
And his eyes rolled back into his head as he slumped to the ground, boneless. Virgil darted forward as quickly as they could, only managing to slow his fall so he didn’t hit his head against the many tree roots and rocks.
“Shit,” Roman cursed loudly and in less than a second he was at Virgil’s side, carefully prying Logan’s limp form out of their arms and draping him carefully over his lap, his anger from barely a minute ago erased.
“Logan, my darling, my love, what happened?” He whispered desperately, scanning Logan for any injury that could be causing this, something he could treat and fix. His hand was clenched tightly around his middle, his face pale and drawn, his breathing shallow, and Virgil reached out to gently pry his arm away.
“No, please,” Logan whined, barely conscious, and his voice sounded so small and scared and unsteady. Roman’s heart shattered at the sound. He gently cradled Logan’s jaw, pressing a feather light kiss to the hands he held carefully in his palms. One was stained dark with blood and Roman felt the pit in his stomach deepen. He looked up at Virgil, almost scared of what he was going to find. The gunshots still rang in his ears, the phantom scent of blood filling his nostrils, or maybe it was real.
Virgil looked at him, eyes dark with worry and fear, Logan’s shirt pulled up to reveal the neat, red circle gouged into his side.
Roman felt bile rise up in his throat and turned away, electing instead to bury his nose in Logan’s hair, focusing on the familiar scent of green leaves and wood smoke that always accompanied him, as opposed to the scent of smoke and metal that was so ingrained in his brain. That he woke up to every morning, muscles tensed and heart racing.
Virgil’s breath hitched as they remembered the words from a conversation not so long ago.
We used the last of our materials for this
The last bandages, used when Virgil had tripped and scraped themself on some large thorns, the last dredges of disinfectant used to clean the bite Roman had sustained from some demented squirrel. They scrabbled through their pack, hands ghosting over the familiar supplies, finding dried fruits and nuts and water bottles and nothing that could help.
They quickly poured some water over the wound, because they had run out of antibiotics months ago and then bunched up their hoodie to press it tightly to the wound.
Logan couldn’t stifle the gasp that ripped from his mouth, a strangled, pained thing and Roman shushed him gently. His eyes flickered open, hazy and unfocused by pain. He tried to lift his head, tried to move away from Roman.
“No no, none of that,” Roman said gently, cradling his face softly in his hands and forcing logan to look at him and only him, away from where Virgil was desperately trying to figure out a way to save their boyfriend with only a pack of nuts and a now empty water bottle.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Roman asked softly as Virgil reached out to pry the battered and torn sash away from Roman shoulder. He tried not to cry as the last reminder of the man he had loved before was taken from him.
“You were angry,” Logan mumbled, head lolling forward in Roman’s grip.
“Darling, do you really think that would have made a difference?” Roman asked as he tucked Logan’s head into the crook of his neck.
“Didn’t want you to worry.”
“You know I’ll always worry about you,” Roman said softly.
“That’s my line,” Virgil chuckled darkly, tying off the sash around Logan’s waist, the best they could do for a bandage right now. They patted Logan’s ankle before standing, brushing the leaves off their skirt. “Let's go home.”
Roman pressed a kiss to Logan’s forehead before standing up, chest tightening when Logan gasped at the movement, burying his face in Roman’s shoulder. They trudged through the forest, pace significantly slower, Logan’s breath heavy and hot against Roman’s collarbone.
They laid him out in their tent, piling on the few blankets they had left and wrapping up his wound as best they could. His face was still deathly pale, and he didn’t react this time, not even when Virgil pressed a rare kiss to his brow and gently smoothed away his hair from his forehead.
They curled up in Roman’s lap on the far side of the tent, watching the steady rise and fall of Logan’s chest as Roman smoothed a hand through their hair. “He’s going to be okay, right?” He asked to the silent tent.
Virgil looked up, grey eyes like the desolate clouds overhead. Their mouth twisted and they looked down at the pebbles scattered on the floor of their tent. “I don’t…” They looked at Roman, his eyes filled with something fearful and desperate. “Yeah, he’ll be alright,” They said, and Roman didn’t call them out on the lie, just held them tighter to his chest and looked at Logan while he tried not to think about blood staining his hands and the screams of a person he had loved long ago.
“We’re going to be okay.”

Weathering the Storm - Part Four
For a multitude of reasons, it has been ages since I've been able to update this story. I had the chapter all plotted out, but never seemed to be able to find time (or sometimes just motivation) to write. I appreciate those who reached out to me asking if I planned to update it and I thank you so much for your patience! I absolutely plan to finish it and right now, there are 2 more planned chapters to close everything out.
For now though, since it has been a few months, here’s a quick recap of where we left off in the last chapter: Emma braved the elements to investigate the abandoned Sheriff cruiser, and after seeing the dashcam video, knows that her husband is injured after the disastrous traffic stop. She's made the assumption that Killian would try to make his way to the closest dwelling to the lonely stretch of highway - Zelena's farmhouse. We're going to pick up at that same farmhouse as the unrelenting thunderstorm continues.
If you’d like to catch up from the beginning, you can find all of the current chapters on FF.net and AO3. Tumblr: Part One  Part Two  Part Three
Despite the warm glow from the flickering orange and gold flames in the fireplace behind her chair, the lingering dreariness of the day was wearing heavily on Zelena's mood. The sky was still laden with dull, grey clouds unleashing unholy torrents of rain upon the farmhouse's metal roof and continuous gusts of wind threatened to blow away the fluttering blue tarp which was only barely protecting them from the elements.
Oh, what she wouldn't have given right now if she could still possess the ability to poof them all away from this isolated outpost deep in the forest. Maybe she shouldn't have been so hasty and rammed that beat up old jalopy of hers into the Black Fairy. She wasn't particularly good at driving the beast but perhaps she could have managed to get into town… Oh, heavens...who was she kidding? In this weather, she wouldn't have made it to the end of the drive, and anyway, the ugly, metal death-trap was still sitting on a lot in town, rusting away as it awaited repairs. It hadn't been a high priority to fix when she'd had electricity and a working telephone to call Regina who'd pop in with supplies and whatever if she needed a hand with something. If she couldn't solve the problem with magic from a distance, she'd drive out to help her sister and niece, but she certainly couldn't do that right now.
At least, she could be thankful for the simple fact that Robin would sleep through almost anything when she had a full tummy. She couldn't recall the exact time she'd put her daughter down for her afternoon nap, but she estimated that it had been about an hour and a half, meaning her child was going to awaken soon and Zelena would have to figure out a way to entertain a cranky toddler in a dark, drafty house. For now though, the exasperated mom was enjoying the quiet reprieve from this stress-filled day before Robin was awake and wanting to play ,and then Zelena would also have to figure a way to keep the baby from bothering their guest.
Their guest.
How long had it been now since Hook showed up sopping wet on her doorstep? Two hours? Closer to three? Surely Emma would have realized that something was amiss if she'd not heard from her husband by now. How long might it take before someone realized that he was lying on her sofa right at this very moment? He was still semi-peacefully slumbering after taking a swig of the children's pain reliever which might have taken enough of the edge off to allow him to rest - or he'd just passed out from sheer agony and exhaustion.
Either way, she tried to distract herself with a little bit of reading by the firelight. The dancing flames cast odd shadows across the pages making the text difficult to see at times, but then she wasn't fully paying attention to the prose before her. She could scarcely recall a thing she'd read from the prior chapter, much less the last paragraph. She just needed something - anything - to keep her weary mind occupied during this brief reprieve. She was going bloody stir crazy, even beginning to believe she was hearing things that weren't there. She'd swear she just heard something rapping on the kitchen window, but quickly dismissed the thought, figuring it was just the swirling wind rattling the creaky door.
Until she was certain that she heard the sound of her name being called over the howling of the storm.
**********
Emma had briefly considered poofing herself right into the center of Zelena's kitchen, but decided against it at the last second, instead materializing from a cloud of pale grey smoke on the front porch instead. While she was somewhat protected from the storm by the narrow extension of the roof, rain water poured over the eaves in sheets. Considering that the gravel driveway leading up from the road had morphed into a shallow, muddy lake, the porch was relatively dry in comparison, although Emma wasn't certain just how protected she was from Mother Nature's fury when a bolt of lightning lit up the darkened skies. The tin roof above her head probably wasn't the safest right now…
She took a long stride closer to the door, wiping away some condensation from the glass with her sleeve as she peered through the window. She couldn't make out much inside the empty kitchen as it was fairly dark with a faint orangish glow in the distance. Zelena probably had a fire burning to provide some light and heat to stave off the chills with the power still out. She couldn't hear any voices emanating from the interior of the house, but it was possible that the noise of the rain striking the metal roof was drowning out any sounds from inside. But in the dim backlight provided by the firelight, Emma could make out a dark mass draped around the back of one of the ladderback chairs - a shape that looked decidedly like the collar and shoulders of a coat. A dark coat that had enough of a sheen on its surface to reflect the warm hue of the flames. Just like a certain black leather coat that her husband had been wearing when he departed for the station this morning.
Please, let that be Killian's coat, she begged of whatever higher power might be listening as she knocked anxiously on the window. Not noticing any movement inside the farmhouse, she rapped again, but this time on the wooden door instead of the glass as her sight fell upon a ruddy stain upon the white paint. Was that blood?
"Zelena?" she shouted, hoping that her voice would carry louder than her knocking. "Zelena? Are you in there?" Well, that was a stupid question...Of course she had to be inside. Most people wouldn't leave home with a fire still burning and where exactly would she go? Even if she'd managed to get her crappy car running, there was no way she would have made it into town in this downpour. She probably wouldn't have reached the end of the driveway… "Zelena!" she cried out even louder this time.
Seeing the familiar hue of the former witch's wild auburn hair through the steamed up glass, Emma's nerves abated momentarily and she let out a relieved exhale as the door was yanked open.
"Emma?" a startled Zelena muttered as she found the drenched, blonde sheriff standing at her doorstep, but her mood instantly lifted. "I am so happy to see you! I was hoping that you'd soon figure out your husband came here to seek help."
"Thank goodness. There weren't many places he could have gone, so I was really hoping he made it here. He recorded the whole thing on the dashcam, so I know he was shot. Is he alright?" Emma tried to keep her nerves in check, but as she rambled on, she knew she was failing miserably.
"He's in on the sofa. He's sleeping right now. Well, at least I think he's sleeping… He's been in and out of consciousness," Zelena explained as she waved Emma inside. Emma brushed past the redhead who closed the door quickly before the wind blew any more of the never-ending precipitation into the kitchen. Zelena continued detailing all she'd done to help, even though she doubted Emma heard half of it. "I've tried my best to get the bleeding under control. It isn't near as heavy as it was before, but he still lost a lot. The bullet that hit him went clean through and I don't think anything too vital was struck, but I really don't know for certain. He's still a bloody mess and a bit feverish. I tried giving him some of Robin's baby ibuprofen to help with the pain too, but I don't have a bloody clue how well that worked..."
Half-listening as she rounded the corner into the living room, Emma made a bee-line over to the sofa where she discovered her husband curled on his side with a woolen blanket draped over him. Even with the golden glow cast by the flames, his skin bore a deathly pallor. "Oh, Killian…," she sighed as she dropped to her knees on the floor beside him. She cupped her palm around his cheek, finding it cool and clammy beneath the warmth of her fingers. A muted, but guttural moan escaped his throat as he stirred at her touch. He blinked twice in the low light but as his sight adjusted, his eyelids parted fully to focus on the unexpected, but magnificent face of his true love.
"Swan?" he mumbled, his muddled brain trying to determine if she was real or just a cruel hallucination.
"It's me," Emma smiled, happy to find him conscious and communicative. "I'm here and I'm going to get you help…"
"Now that you can heal him, it'll all be fine," Zelena spoke up. "I would have already done that if I still had my magic, but now Emma can get you all fixed up," she gave a nod to Killian but the expression that crossed Emma's face confused her.
"Unfortunately, it isn't quite that simple…," Emma groaned in frustration. "Because this situation involved criminals from outside of Storybrooke, I had to have David notify the state police and put out a bulletin to watch for the vehicle. They'll have questions about the shooting, and if the deputy who they can see being shot on dashcam footage is suddenly, miraculously healed, those questions are going to get uncomfortable and weird and cast doubt on the whole thing. I don't even think that saying Killian was wearing a bulletproof vest would hold up under the circumstances…"
"So, what does that mean?" Zelena questioned.
"I'll have to get him back to Whale - transport him directly to the hospital…"
Emma was cut off mid-sentence as the storm unleashed a tremendous gust of wind that blasted through the broken window, billowing out the tarp until the nails could no longer hold and the resulting gush extinguished the fire. Swirls of raindrops, leaves and other debris were forced through the opening as the tarp floundered and flopped about the floor. Without a moment's hesitation, she spun around and raised her hands. In a split-second, a magical wave of bright light filled the room, vanquishing the tarp and all of the storm debris as it repaired the damaged window, restoring it to its original state like its twin further down the living room wall.
Zelena breathed a sigh of relief as the threat of further damage subsided for the time being, even though the room was plunged into darkness without the flames illuminating it. She wasn't going to miss that ugly plastic sheet, nor would she miss the drafts and rainwater that seeped in around its edges.
"Thank you for fixing that awful eyesore," Zelena said as Robin let out a terrified wail after being awakened by all of the commotion. "I'm coming, my love," she assured her daughter but she also gave Emma a quizzical look before heading over to the play yard. "Do you think you're going to have to explain that one?" she asked Emma with a gesture towards the repaired window.
"Hopefully, it won't come to it, but I suppose I'll think of something, if necessary," Emma replied as she turned her attention back to her wounded husband while Zelena scooped up a whimpering toddler. "Okay, one crisis averted," she whispered as she gently squeezed her husband's bicep through the blanket. "Let's get you into town so we can get you fixed up too."
Killian gave a weak nod and allowed his eyes to fall closed again as he steeled himself for teleportation, never knowing how rough the landing may be when they re-materialized. The commonplace of magical transport was something this grizzled mariner was still getting used to.
"Take us with you," Zelena interrupted. Unprepared for such a request, Emma glanced upward into the pleading eyes of the redhead who was still bouncing a teary-eyed toddler on her hip.
"What?" Emma stammered, her brow knitted in confusion. Had she heard that right?
"Please… Will you transport us there with you? I promise, we will be out of your way as soon as we get there. I'll call Regina to come pick us up, but I can't stay isolated out here in this bloody storm with no power and no way to get in touch with anyone. I hate not having magic anymore… I don't want to be a bother, but please…?"
"Um...sure, I guess," Emma responded. "For everything you've done for Killian today, I suppose it's the least I could do."
"Oh, thank you! Thank you!" the former witch gushed. "Let me grab Robin's things. I'll be less than a minute!" She scurried into the bedroom to collect Robin's diaper bag as well as a jacket for each of them, then quickly darted into the kitchen to grab the baby's pre-made evening bottle, which the little one eyed greedily as they returned to the living room. Her final task was to toss a pitcher of water onto the smoldering remnants of the fire to ensure it was completely out before they vacated the farmhouse. Returning to Emma's side, Zelena gave her daughter a tight hug and exclaimed: "All ready."
"Then off to Storybrooke Hospital we go," Emma stated, swishing her wrist before the magical cloud enveloped them.

the sun is trying to kill the moon, 2/2 (complete), joe/nicky
The science community unveils successful time travel and the very next morning, Joe wakes to find that no one knows who Nicky Smith is, other than him. Faced with the prospect of a life without Nicky, Joe will stop at nothing to get him back.
Before he even opens his eyes, it’s the sound that nearly knocks Joe off his feet.
This sound shouldn’t be different than any other battle. The clash of metal should be the same, the sound of men dying shouldn’t change, but there’s something about this particular battle-scarred landscape that has never left Joe and crystallizes it as unique in his mind. He’d know it anywhere. It’s in his nightmares and his dreams. Now, again, it’s impossibly here before him.
He opens his eyes to a familiar sight painted before him, a battle raging in the distance and the tents of his former enemies flickering before him in the dusk light.
It’s 1099. He’s in Jerusalem, near the Wall.
In the years after this, Nicky had told him about what happened in the days leading up to the battle that brought them to one another. He’d spoken of the ship’s voyage and how it had made him furiously seasick, how he’d prayed to God constantly for dry land until finally his feet touched solid ground and the sickness abated.
He’d thought that the end of God’s blessings.
“I didn’t know that God was not done blessing me yet,” Nicky always finishes his story, “because he saw fit to give me you, too.”
Joe inhales sharply to quell the ache in his chest. He’s so close, but he’s still so far and even the memory of Nicky’s fingers stroking over his warm skin in the light of a fire as he spoke of Joe being his blessing isn’t enough, when he has limited time to work.
He shoves his helmet under a pile of Genoese weapons nearby. He’ll need it soon, but right now, he’s wearing the clothes of the Franks, needing to blend in with them. Nicky’s here, somewhere, even if he’s still Nicolò di Genova -- a man removed from history by the stupidity of people who had no idea how much he means to Joe.

“Alliances Tempered.”  The Book of Thursby: Scions of Numenor [SB]
*Intended originally to publish as one work under the FFXIV Write event.  But I couldn’t get past the half-way mark before the deadline.  So I trimmed the post to the epigraph.  The full work is posted now as a non-entry. “Truth is a sacrament of lies, proffered by ministers of fear.  It is an exercise in asserting control, not the betterment of the soul or wisdom.  People seek truth to gain comfort and in doing so drive away fear from uncertainty.  Control gives comfort of an insidious sort.  Control breeds a craving to flee the fear of losing control which comes with it.  Those who hold sway over one will seek many and ever greater comfort to sate this fear.”
~Loxonica Omber, “Observations through the Dark Crystal.”
Tumblr media
A mechanical lift in Ul’Dah seemed almost out of place to Benjimir.  It was one of many things that seemed utterly in contradiction to each other.  An ancient citadel illuminated by flame and wick with lifts such as this.  Airships hoisted aloft by bags of gas docked alongside others of high craft using forces of nature to defy gravity.  Winged beasts of burdon toting people and goods hither and yon along roads traveled by flying mounts of metal and technocraft.  No singular craft held sway over these lands.  There was a seamless, unlikely harmony to all of it however.
From the Dapper Mainer these details were rendered unnoticeable by the height the dinning room held above the lower levels of the city.  Brightly decorated with white painted alls and tapestries of airships, it evoked the theme of travel by the vessels which docked and departed from the port a few levels above it.  Even as Benjimir and his brothers were taken to their table from the matre’d station a rotund airship, slung under great beige bags of Ceruleum infused gas descended across the view of the main bay of windows.  The ship cast a shadow which for a moment left the room to the light of candles and lamps already lit about the tables and walls. For this moment the room shifted from the light orange hue of the setting sun to white.  The trim from black to a rich green hue.  Even the tapestries seemed to change as if they were created in matching palettes.  As the ship continued on and unsheathed the sunsets light again the room resumed the richer color scheme.
“Brilliant.”  Benjimir said as he took his seat.
Tinifalas looked about and smiled.  “Unique in Ul’Dah, pity it is not open to all.” he said as he picked up the single panel menu.
“Whom has access?” Benjimir asked.
“Select passengers aboard airships, officers of Grand Companies, select Free Companies and those with ties to airship industry and trade.”  Bondermir said and looked about the room.  As yet it was early for the dinner hour, no passengers vessels were docked, and their guests were only now debarking the large airship-of-the-line which they arrived aboard.  As such the room was unoccupied as yet.  Soft orchestral music played over a device near the kitchen door.  “So you’ve both met our guest before, tell me something of what to expect.” Benjimir asked towards his brothers as the lift’s works stirred to life.
“The admiral is no diplomat but has a practical and even handed approach.  She has a seafarers eloquence but speaks plainly as a rule.” Bondermir offered.  Tinifalas agreed.  “She and T’subaki are surely kindred spirits, if cut from different cloth.”
“Not much of Aubreen’s sort of cloth to cut from anymore.” Benjimir lamented.  The lift’s works paused their action.  Aubreen T’subaki was of the long lived races and the most trusted source of council to the House of Thursby since time out of memory.  She had taught generations of Thursby’s and fleet officers over ages as the eldest authority on nautical traditions and warfare.  She was Benjimir’s oldest friend and mentor “up well.” Her race bore time well, scarcely suggesting their age in appearance.  Her sharp sloping ears suggested she was of the Elezan race native to Eorzea, though she was well shorter and femininely curved than any example to be found.
Aubreen had gone “down well” at Benjimir’s behest after the first reports from Tinifalas arrived five years earlier.  Bondermir was sent to take on the role of master of spies and business, it became clear freedom of movement and commerce across Hydalen would require more than wagons.  Her task was to lay roots for a merchant marine, along with protection for ships, crewing needs, and at sea, a means to guard against threats on it.
Maelstrom being as near to a formal authority at sea as could be found, had common interests with the Thursby Company.  These were in restoring commerce, checking raiders at sea and shore, and an economy of scale of having common services made an effective partnership.  Aubreen parlayed a single ship’s service into friendly relations and eventually alliance between Maelstrom and the Thursby Company.  Much had been bore of that relationship.
Aubreen took brought with her a cadre of promising officers to her task.  Now, most were commanding their own ships or stations.  Training Maelstrom officers had itself become a means to furthering favors and relations with the Grand Company.
The previous years saw Aubreen lead Maelstrom and Thursby ships alike in combat and to victory.  With victory came trust.  Old tonnage bought and leased from the Grand Company, a concept new to them.  Calamity wrecked ship yards were negotiated into the fold of the Thursby Company.  Much of this was guided by Benjimir from afar.  His name and seal near even as he was years from Ul'dah.
The lift’s works stirred again and soon stopped.  The doors parted and out of it emerged a pair of crimson uniformed guards who took posts on either side the doors.  Next came forth a tall, stately, fetching woman, with silver hair and porcelain hued skin.  Her red epaulets displayed her rank insignia on a pitch black uniform jacket which bore a modest sum of chest and cleavage.  Knee high polished leather boots and twin pistols left no question of her identity.  Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn of Maelstrom.
From behind Bloefhiswyn emerged Aubreen, clad in a deep navy blue uniform jacket akin to the admirals.  This, to Benjimir’s surprise, shared the display of cleavage new to any who knew her before coming to these shores.  The jacket skirted higher on her legs however, exposing traditional white slacks tucked into matt black cavalier style boots.  Her skin bore a traditional hue of flesh that did not reflect the suns hours on it.  Her snow white hair made and few slight lines on her face gave the only hints of age.
“A most striking couple.” Benjimir thought aloud and unintentionally.  Bondermir suppressed a grin.  “Strikely surely, but not a couple.  The commodore has taken up with another.” he said to Benjimir as Aubreen led the admiral across the room.
“Eh?” Benjimir said.  Tinifalas tipped his head toward his brother and whispered. “Captain Vaunter.”  Benjimir’s eyes flared and head turned involuntarily.
“No...really?” he said, extending the last syllabi, almost unable to contain his voice.  He smiled and shook his head.  “Wouldn’t have thought it, but these are new days we live in.”  Aubreen had not taken a partner in anybody's lifetime and Katryn Vaunter was an unlikely pairing, especially being an officer under her and as Benjimir's protege.  But these were not past days.
Aubreen and Bloefhiswyn stood before the Thursby brothers.  As a flag officer here at Aubreen's invitation Benjimir greeted the admiral first and offered seats to them.
Orders place and drinks in hand it was Bloefhiswyn who opened the discussion.  “Five years, much blood and gil, what brings you to shore now?”  she asked.
“I row slow,” Benjimir replied prompting a smile from Bloehiswyn.  “More an inspection tour I think it is best described as.  I think it is becoming prudent council to take-up a presence in the flesh, guide our families works nearer than at sea.”  He concluded.
Bloefhiswyn nodded slowly in acknowledgement and sipped the wine she ordered.  “And of matters our mutual concern and the future?  What comes next?” she asked.
Benjimir sat back in his chair and drank.  “It is our way to ply our trade and seek the betterment of those whom we can aid.  And the safe keep of our people and interests, that means having an eye on the future, preparing for dangers unseen.  For now, we will see through to the completion our joint work”  He explained to Bloefhiswyn.  She absorbed it all.
“But what comes next and what dangers do you foresee?  The sea lanes are soon to be secure, the fighting at large has abated for now.  Do you have plans for the fleet you have assembled, men you are training?”  Bloefhiswyn pressed.
“We’ve no ambitious to statehood or governance if that weighs on you mind.  Not our way as I know the Commodore and master Exidines have made clear.”  Benjimir remained relaxed in his chair, sipped his drink again.  “There are answers important to me, to our people, which we must divine.  As well as our mandate to stand against shadows where ever they show themselves. As it happens, they’ve shown themselves here.  As to future dangers?” Benjimir started, unconsciously slipping his hand to the Dagger of Warding on his belt.  “They’ll make themselves apparent in due course.  I believe our victories aside they’ve not abated since before the fall of Dalamud and their greatest challenge has yet to present itself.”
Bloefhiswyn assumed a relaxed posture in her own chair, listening intently and nodding as Benjimir spoke.  “You suggest we are only seeing the start of troubles then?”  She said, lending forward.  Benjimir nodded.  “What course shall we set them mister Thursby?” She asked.
Benjimir sipped once more.  “Prepare in what ways we can to oppose what we are able too.  For now, you and I alike can only speculate what that might be.”  With that all at the table drew themselves up as the meal arrived.
Aubreen looked on silently.  Her gift of foresight was of no use to her on these shores.  She could only sense an approaching destiny with no shape or hue and a need to make peace with it.  In such times her thoughts turned to the young captain aboard the Andustar.

To get away a little bit I took a little walk out and saw a lot of fireflies. In honor of the little ones I decided to make a mini-fic outdoors with the constellation of Capricorn in the sky and the fireflies around me. Enjoy~♡
(It was currently 10:00pm when I started so it could be done at random)
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
It was midnight, and Alice couldn’t sleep. She was on Tracy Island that day to spend some time with Virgil and the others, naturally after having entrusted her home in Los Angeles to a dear friend of hers. Now she didn’t notice the jet-lag, because she went back and forth as she liked between the US and Tracy Island, but she couldn’t sleep anyway that night.
She didn’t have any weird feelings or bad feelings. She just needed to get out a little bit, to get some air. She looked from out the window at the ceiling. As with every time she was in her room, the various constellations painted with fluorescent paint and the great White Moon welcomed and guarded her thoughts, and often even her worries.
That night he was in her room because she wanted to be alone to think; Virgil had fully approved, arguing that every now and then everyone needed to be alone to think. After all, during the afternoon they were completely alone cuddling lazily on his bed all the time, they had enough time for them.
Alice sighed deeply. Evidently not even her room was made to be alone to think that night. So she sat on the bed after having affectionately greeted with her eyes her stars, slipping the soft slippers to the feet. She wanted to get out and so she would.
Turning the abat-jour on the bedside table, which made a warm and faint yellow light around the room, she looked around to accustom her eyes to that little light, then she got up from her bed, heading towards the door leading to the closet, located not far from the en-suite bathroom and opposite the glass wall that led to the balcony.
She entered the small room, lighting the light there too, and then headed to a precise drawer and pull out her two-piece swimsuit, the one that Virgil loved so much. She took off her silk pajamas and black underwear, quickly but quietly putting on her costume, starting with her underwear and then slipping on her bra, quickly binding it just under her shoulders. Then she covered himself with the silk shawl that was part of the pajamas.
(Oh! Now I see in the sky also the constellation of Orion, along with Venus in the distance and the North Star. Too bad that I do not have an adequate camera to be able to take this spectacular view...ahem...coming back to the fic...)
She turned off the light from the walk-in closet and went out, closing the door behind her. Then she changed the slippers with a pair of flip-flops, heading to turn off the abat-jour. She headed to the door holding the flip-flops in her hand. She didn’t need any noise now that everyone was asleep. She calmly opened the door and then left. She tiptoed down the hall, making sure not to make any noise. Luckily, the parquet floor underneath her did not creak, so her presence was not even felt.
She calmly went down the stairs and then proceeded to the living room. She was somewhat surprised when John did not appear as a hologram to greet her, though she expected it. Maybe he was asleep, like everyone else in the villa. She went to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and could clearly smell the chlorine in the pool first thing. She smiled a little and then drank the water in one breath.
Then she went out, clenched in her shawl, and was surprised to sense movement in the pool. At this time of night...?
Of course she knew it was about Gordon, and in fact her suspicions were immediately clarified when his twin brother pulled his head out of the water after a dive.
"Hey, you. Yes, right you." Alice whispered to Gordon, who looked at her surprised.
"I didn’t expect to find you up this late, Litchi. Can’t you sleep?" he whispered back.
"Don't call me Litchi." she murmured sternly. "No, I can’t sleep tonight, so I thought I’d take a stroll to the beach."
Gordon was about to replicate something, his glowing look of excitement, when Tiger, with a slight meowing, dived into the water right next to Gordon, who chuckled.
"Sometimes I seriously doubt he’s a cat." he said, pointing to the young tiger cat swimming comfortably in the pool, as if he were in its natural environment.
"True. It looks like he’s made for water. I’ve seen cats swimming like Tiger online, so it’s not totally impossible. Just hard to see." replied Alice, lifting her shoulders, and then lowering to put on her flip-flops.
"If you want, I can go down with you to the sea." Gordon whispered right away.
"If you want, yes."
"Then turn around. I have to put my boxers on."
"You mean you’ve bathed naked so far?" she whispered maliciously, then giggled, turning her back to her twin brother.
She immediately heard him coming out of the water, and when he whispered the ok she turned again.
"Nice abs, bro!" she whispered.
He rolled his eyes, but not after posing. "If Virgil hears you then he becomes jealous of me." When Alice rolled his eyes he continued. " I go inside to get a sweatshirt. If I’m not back in 5 minutes it means that Scott caught me."
She widened her eyes. " Scott is awake? But I haven’t met him at all!"
"I saw his room light go out just before I dived in. He retired recently, but that doesn’t mean he’s asleep. You have to be careful."
"Go then."
"Anyway, do you have the communicator?"
Alice nodded her head as she followed him into the living room. "How could I not have it? I wear it even when I sleep!" she whispered and then showed the bracelet that was on her wrist, so thin that it did not even look like a communicator.
"Wait for me outside." Gordon whispered, and Alice nodded on her way back to the pool, sitting on a deck chair nearby.
She could hear the crickets and the bubbling of an owl in the distance. She stopped to listen to that angelic sound for so long that she did not notice how much time had passed. When she looked at the wrist clock, she noticed that 15 minutes had passed. She got up from the deckchair and then walked a little, until she found a small underground path in front of her. Without thinking twice she took that path, arriving with some trouble at the beach in front of her. She headed toward the still warm sand and without thinking twice sat down on it, comforted by its warmth. She turned to put her black shawl on a rock in the pine forest, and what she saw at that moment took her breath away.
As she had walked in the woods to get to the beach she had never noticed the thousand fireflies that filled the trees with small lights, numerous and beautiful. They looked like stars came down to earth. Some of the bright insects even arrived on the beach, also illuminating the golden sand and, shortly after, the sea.
When she returned to the sand, this time to lie down on it, she realized that there was no moon in the sky. There were several stars bright enough but, although there was no cloud in the sky, the bright star had not yet made its appearance.
She sighed, and then stood up and walked safely to the water, leaving the flip-flops near the shawl and enjoying the sound of the sand creaking under her feet at every step she was taking. She began to immerse herself in the water little by little, comforted by the heat that was releasing from the sultry day just passed.
Everything looked different at night; even the living room of the villa was different at night. There was more room for nocturnal sounds, such as cicadas, crickets and owls, sounds that during the day could not be heard with various commitments. It was as if the world really took on life during the night, revealing this dark but charming side of her, or at least that’s what Alice has always thought since she was little. She liked to walk at night, she always liked it.
It was only when she arrived with the water up to her neck that she stopped. And she enjoyed the Moon that was beginning to peep out, reflecting on the water.
(It’s 12:16pm and I’m tired. That’s all I was able to write in two hours lol. I realized, unfortunately too late, to have written the entire fic in Italian, and then, between the translation and the correction flew away another hour, although this fic was quite short. Idk, I hope you liked it anyways)

Just a Taste
A/N: I honestly hope I finish this. Should be 3 or 4 chapters in total, maybe less. I don’t know too much about African culture and how it all works at this time of the year but it’s just me incorporating vague themes for a fic. So hope I’m not stepping on toes or anything like that with this fic.
Summary: You get to meet King T’Challa who seemed to be a big fan of America’s Halloween. Especially Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Funnily enough, you dressed as ripe little Mina for the taking.
Tags: Blood and Blood Sucking, Instant Attraction, Biting(vicious and otherwise)
Warnings: 18+, Death
For my sisters and aunties out there needing black fantasy and fiction for us and by us. All my love. Definitely not nervous about this. Not nervous at all lol.
1.7K+ words

Tumblr media
T’Challa wondered what was going on with himself as he stood in front of the full body-length mirror. He had been sweating heavily as a blast of pure, hot hunger, which hit him an hour ago raged on. He attempted for the third time to stretch the arms of his dashiki inspired blazer, which clung tight to his arms and showed off thick muscles with no success.
Being uncomfortable and hungry was just not on the agenda of the King’s tonight.
He gave up with a shake of his head and thanked Bast that he was able to blot away the unwanted moisture on his forehead and neck after a few minutes of meticulous drying, making sure that he got every spot. The towel, barely dampened was handed off to him per his request by a server who could not keep her eyes off of him. Her eyes, unnaturally predatory- roamed his body before taking her time to leave. He shivered and smiled graciously, if not uncomfortably at her before thanking and sending her away. After all, it paid to be polite even in the face of possibly compromising situations.
He was supposed to be the predator after all. But that one. He’d have to watch out for her as he filed away her face for later use so he could avoid her.
Not wanting to deal with her lust or anyone else’s adding fuel to the fire, or even bringing about the monstrous side of himself too early into the night before getting a chance to enjoy the celebration- he barred entry of his rooms to everyone but the Dora Milaje. He wasn’t impulsive or dangerous. Just grumpy and even more hungrier than before.
Thinking about the meal he leisurely enjoyed not even 24 hours ago. He was under the assumption that he could make it through the day with no hindrances such as this. He always fed a full day before events and meetings because it was never good to deal with stress on a full stomach, especially for him. Vampires rejecting blood because of their bodies stress factors never bode well for any one vampire. They either sweat it out or vomited point blank unless they could quickly find a bathroom. Otherwise, the room wouldlook like a scene from the original Carrie film as she went on a vengeful, murderous rage. It didn’t help that his fangs, now that he thought about it, slid out so quickly from their hidden spaces in his gums which made him groan in bliss- the sweet pressure being lifted from his head.
With everyone on his team throwing their all into a Wakandan inspired Halloween party after Shuri had told him and their mother about it 6 years ago. She made sure to show him holo-vids, photos and even planned invites to other celebrations accordingly. T’Challa could not deny being a bit jealous himself that his sister had been able to enjoy those parties while he’d had to stay back and deal with diplomatic and international affairs.
He. Was. Hooked.
They’d made it tradition to host a festival or party every year after that moment. The small Panther Clan had come to love every bit of the holiday with its spooky decorations, costumes, candies and traditions behind it. Especially the pumpkin-carving.
It was so easy to try to incorporate things from their culture into it and create a mix by tracing traditional clan and tribal masks into the largest of pumpkins and painted with family colors by elders and children. The last bits which were the preferable Kimoyo bead lamplight that switched on and off with a snap of the fingers and levitated, gave off no heat. They made the decorative plant-based ornaments shine like no other.
Seeing his people in Wakanda and America coming together to just enjoy themselves this way always made him happy. He was surprised and awed at seeing his and his sister’s ideas, really her work firsthand. It made for integration with home bases go smoother than anything else they’d ever done. Schooling and better job opportunities for their brothers and sisters and their children, a close second. They were the number one priority by all means to build trust and support; but having the funds and proper locations for safety, security and functionality was always preferable.
Halloween had made him hungrier than any other time of the year for whatever reason. He once briefly considered it being what the Americans called it- the Harvest Moon, which could’ve been a possibility that aided in affecting him but quickly brushed it away. He wasn’t superstitious but he did have sets of religious and magical practices that he followed within his own culture.
He was ever curious about mortals who would dress up as supernatural creatures and parade around as if they were nothing more than masks, stories. They were very brave to parade around as creatures they didn’t know existed beside them, truly roamed the world. It was for one night anyway so why bother?
Giving himself a cursory once over and sniff before nodding in confirmation that he was ready to go down to the party as soon as he was notified of the last guest arriving.
Okoye approached the doorway of T'Challa's open wardrobe hesitantly. “My King- Are you alright?” She asked after some time, frowning. She stepped further into the room and noticed that her King was silently brooding. His was a little paler than usual, almost like a ashy tone took ahold.
He looked to be in the beginning stages of his hunger.
It didn't feel right. She escorted the numerous donors to and from his personal quarters herself and assumed him to be adequately satisfied after he signaled he was done for the night just the other day. She immediately stepped forward and offered up her wrist.
She inquired again, but softly this time sympathetically. “My King?”
Snapping out of his almost trance, he looked at her and politely declined. Covering his mouth, he muffled out, “I should be fine Okoye. I still do have blood in the cooler.” He motioned to the compact fridge with a clear door with his free hand. Three drawers stacked on top of the other holding bags of cold blood that would be quick and somewhat filling until he could get his next warm meal.
Okoye waited a moment for any change. T'Challa's eyes crinkled in delight and appreciation at her thoughts of him as she tapped the bottom of her spear on the floor before excusing herself.
This was one of those moments where he needed a little time to get his thoughts together.
One hour later~
T’Challa sighed and snatched a packet of Universal blood out of the cooler and snarled before biting into it. Careful not to make a mess of his outfit for tonight, he sucked the thick, cold blood down quickly and greedily. Once the plastic crinkled with emptiness in his hands, he threw the empty packet into the trash with precision from his chair. A booming voice as soon as it made it into the basket came from nowhere. “A perfect 3 points brother! Are you ready for the party? Everyone is accounted for and gathering into the main room.”
Shuri walked over to her brother and began brushing off invisible dust from the shoulder of his blazer and handed him a hat which perfectly added to his look.
“You look good brother!”
“So do you sister.” He glanced curiously at her well put together cosplay of a character from a show she called Cannon Busters. S. A. M. as he recalled. From a ‘fire anime’ as her and her American friends mentioned.
T’Challa stood and grinned down at his sister before hugging her tight. Thinking about the not so recent fight slash inner country war that happened with Erik and traitors from their country who believed violence was the answer. It wasn’t as if T’Challa was blind to his people’s plight outside of Wakanda. He just didn’t know what to do or how to react to it all, admitting that he was foolish not to take a stand for what was right. It took for a near death ass-beating, a spirit talk with his Baba and some serious soul searching to truly realize how beneficial it would be to reach out with resources his people needed. Their people everywhere regardless of who liked it or not.
Shuri snatched back, yanking T’Challa out of his musings and patted his shoulders once more.
“Well I think that’s enough of that brother.” A knowing and sad smile ghosted her face as she dragged him from his wardrobe and room. “Come, we must see everyone and their ideas for this year. You might even get new features on your suit brother!”
“A tease sister, the suit is fine as it is so nothing funny this time. I'm onto you.” He linked his arm through Shuri’s and dutifully followed where she lead.
With a soft shlik, his fangs pulled back into their homes. The move reminding him of how his hunger was abated for now but he would still have to be careful around the guests so that there wasn’t any unexpected feats or surprises.
A comfortable pause fell over the Udaku siblings on the short journey to the downstairs wing where guests waited.
“Shuri… Do you ever find yourself hungrier during this time of the year?”
Watching her face for any similar symptoms, Shuri shook her head no.
“Maybe it is just you brother. There are more people than last year’s celebration showing up so it may be just your hunger. Excitement maybe. Is that why you had an emergency blood packet?”
He nodded after a pregnant pause, noting that since he had become the Panther, he’d grown thirstier than he generally was. Never taking more than 1-2 liters of blood from designated donors who lived near the house he currently owned and resided in.
Maybe this was another effect of him being stronger, faster, smarter after being brought back to life. He needed to compensate for the changes in his body and mind.
“Well, let us get to this party before we are late and Mother kills us both.” Excitement in his tone as they grew closer to the music seeping out double doors ahead.
“Agreed brother.” Shuri nodded and sped up toward the main hall where four Dora were standing guard, doors open to guests piling in from the foyer still.
With a nod, they acknowledged their King and Princess, who adjusted her wig before hooting and running into the crowd, joining her friends.

Cannon Busters is a pretty great anime that was recently released on Netflix. Everybody black was in on it so I had to go and represent by watching. I did my best so I hope ya’ll enjoy it.

Octo Expansion Mem Cake Starters/Prompts! 🐙
I was trying to complete the Octo Expansion when I was inspired to make this because of the Tentakook Mem Cake poem! I don’t think anyone has done this before. Anyways, thought they’d make for some really great roleplay starters and writing prompts, so have fun! ❤
---
“At last we meet, my so-called foe. But is our fate to spray this hate? Perhaps we'll learn in depths below...”
“With tresses pink and eyes a blank, A smile so faint, it hides your feint, You slip on past—outfoxed! Outflanked!”
“You paint the turf with graceful strokes. With watchful eye, I breathe a sigh. From sniper's perch, I go for broke.”
“The rolling column splatters all. A stray shot shakes the trees awake. The summer turns, here comes the fall.”
“You gaze seaward with azure hope. Between each blink you calmly think, As when you use a Splatterscope.”
“The world I knew seems like a trap. I'm drawn now to the strange and new. Would my old friends think me a sap?”
“The fat and heavy locks hang low They frame your face above a base Of stumpy leg and pigeon toe.”
“A hilltop picnic, friends and fruit. Your whirling blades provide us shade. I raise a hand in mock salute.”
“Destroy your troubles—bombs away! A tempting thought: bring all to naught. No wonder your friends tend to stray.”
“You face away, thinking me blind, Like I don't know what you won't show. Your love is still clear from behind.”
“So principled you might explode, But when you burst, who's really cursed? Your loved ones have to bear that load.”
“It seems to you a sly attack, But for your pains you make no gains. You only get shot in the back.”
“How loftily you float on high, Suspended there in starry air As you drip purple passing by.“
“How desolate this star-marked limb. Is what awaits me this same fate? I must not dwell; it's much too grim.”
“Though parted by the ocean deep, My oldest friend, we meet again. I touch your face; you rouse from sleep.”
“You overwhelm with crowds and throngs. At every turn, you writhe and churn. Why can't we simply get along?”
“Now nights grow long; summer abates. The tides recede as squids stampede. With fireworks, we celebrate.”
“Your motor whines; the ocean roars. No ink can halt your firm assault. Let these invaders know the score.”
“When problems stack too tall to see, Just chip away and, day by day, You'll grow to live a life carefree.”
“Where love could blossom, spite congeals. Faced with these thieves, I aim and heave A cluster bomb right in the feels.”
“The hunt leads down a winding path. Tightly coiled and well-oiled, These dirty squids could use a bath.”
“Erupting eel glimpses the sky. Its eyelids squint against the glint Of sun unseen by creatures shy.”
“A sudden drizzle bars my way. It's no hour for this shower, But light rain won't ruin my day.”
“Each glittered scale shines so bright. You're my last ditch to strike it rich And tilt my bank balance aright.”
“Finality's not what it seems. When your end comes, rise up and run. Don't let defeat dissolve your dreams.”
“I topple from the tower ledge And choke back tears to see the gears Eliminate our hard-won edge.”
“We're torn apart so many times; I must be bold and keep my hold To make their team pay for their crimes.”
“When four are one, they make a team. But one from ten? Uhh, come again? It's like some kind of fever dream.”
“You teach the virtues of the still, And yet I spurned the lesson learned. My problem is I have no chill.”
“Oblivious, adrift, and round, You hold inside a tempting prize. Who doesn't love that popping sound?”
“To plant a tree's its own reward After you're gone, it will grow on In memory, initials scarred.”
“The polished nozzle gleams and shines. Unblemished gun reflects the sun. A good day's match; victory's mine.”
“I shake the squeegee to and fro. As I do laps my color saps; A fair trade for a mighty blow.”
“Closer to pyramids than spheres— Let fly the bombs! A sigh, then calm. A pillow stained with ink—or tears.”
“Not everyone can be a scourge In tense combat. I toss this splat, A monument to my last surge.”
“Though it flies errant or amiss, Should its sly arc hit near the mark, Your fate is sealed with its kiss.”
“No stealth or guile, not for you. You pave the way as plain as day, Foreshadowing imminent spew.”
“Its friendly face, its easy stride— That's all a front. Let me be blunt; It leaves you with nowhere to hide.”
“The sickly sweet aroma spreads. Its stagnant arms bring only harm, Along with sluggish, looming dread.”
“"I rule," you said, "It's in my blood. Don't step to me — ESPECIALLY If you can't hang with my best bud."”
“They told me you had gone to ground, And your rad groove was concrete proof That you made it safe and sound.”
“Two friends who never are apart: One's always cool, the other stews. I love them both with all my heart.”
“I watch your tendrils undulate A blue bouquet that twirls and sways, As central mass swells and deflates.”
“Hmm, Slosher? Inkbrush? Curling Bomb? I'd gladly browse for hours and hours Your gushing ramble brings me calm.”
“Black, bulging eyes stare far inside. What does he see deep within me? From his sharp gaze, no one can hide.”
“How long must I wait in his line? Such tragic lack of Crusty snack... I'm almost there! It will be mine!”
“Behind his dour, one-eyed stare, Our urchin friend conceals a yen For making the most out of gear.”
“A patch of sun? A fresh-caught fish? No bribe will swerve your eye for turf, However desperately we wish.”
“Oh, what I'd give to be employed! Better, I'd say, to work for pay Than ride this subway through the void.”
“Our sweat dripping from every pore. The harsh, hot sun won't stop this run. We grit our teeth and ask for more.”
“I hate the sea but love the breeze. The sandy shore I will endure Just for that brisk, zephyrous tease.”
“A Skalop brand atop your crown Will turn some heads but really shreds When it is simply turned around.”
“Squids often wear this as they strike With bomb and brush. It's quite a rush. I wish I could know what that was like...”
“Your 'tude is righteous, as you say. Is your science as defiant? Prove that your battle rhymes can slay.”
“I see you standing in the rain. Within a storm—forever warm. Powerful as a hurricane.”
“Put down the phone go shelve your book. Get ready, champ—it's time to camp! We'll share a drink right from the brook!”
“Constructed of glass and concrete, A city stays in dull, drab grays Till we splash color on its streets.”
“Mistakes of youth teach us a lot. We skate too fast and have a blast And learn quickly not to get caught.”
“"When going through here, play it cool!" Or get a clue and don't go through! I won't bend on this! Them's the rules!”
“I pack my feelings in a box: A parcel stuffed with hope and love And trimmed with stamps unorthodox.”
“I've seen this, but I'm not aware Just what the splat I'm looking at! Is it a frog or a brown bear?”
“How I admire Li'l Max! The highest rank to be so swank That my rivals have heart attacks.”
“The tides go out and take the light. How will I greet you when we meet? It keeps me up on inkstained nights.”
“Your song inspired a blush of love. It gave my heart a fresh new start. Now I ascend to shores above.”
“I leave without ceremony. Don't be too sore; I wanted more. My sincerest apology.”
“When I get my hands on these fish I might exchange them on the range, Except that they look so delish...”
“A mystery rolled up and bound— Oh, what's the use? It's too obtuse. I'll dump it in the lost and found.”
“Beneath a summer sky I walk, Through valley, plain, and back again, Dreaming of what you might unlock.”
“The rhythm etched in little jolts Those idols sing and put a spring In my steps as I crank the volts.”
“Encased in a sturdy sphere of glass. It breaks my heart to see you caught With whiskers trembling as I pass.”
“Though slick with slime, I keep my grip. The chill seeps through my gift from you. I mustn't let this cargo slip.“
“I don't quite trust this stark white brand. It's more for squids or little kids... And where's the pop? It's oh-so bland!”
“This swells a stir of royal pride. In small or large, you lead the charge. The ink of nobles flows inside.”
“On colder days, I like these clothes. With other threads I'd stay in bed— It's too frigid to be exposed!”
“I see you walking down the street. You think you're slick in those lime kicks, But they'd look fresher on my feet.”
“The squishing footsteps trudge in muck. Their path revealed by heavy heel. My heart beats quick a stroke of luck!”
“Such devilfish-may-care couture— The colors clash and make a splash! Without a doubt, footwear du jour.”
“It keeps the elements away: No rain, nor heat, nor wind, nor sleet. But does it guard against ink spray?”
“No matter thickness, brim, or gauge, A well-done purl will awe the world. These handmade hats are all the rage!”

MASTERLIST
PAIRING: Felix Rosier x Female Jacob’s Sibling
SUMMARY: Years after Hogwarts, your family arranged a marriage between you and your former Prefect, Felix Rosier, who only seems to see you as a friend. Eventually, you and he must talk about the state of your relationship.
WORDS: 3,478
WARNING: Mention of death
A/N: Argg this is not my best work but I really like the arranged marriage trope/au. The og draft had so much more angst but I wasn’t feeling it so I tried to minimize it as much as I could. So here it is...semi-angst?? Anyway, thanks to all the lovely people who supported Unsubtle! :) I need to give more love to other characters so I don’t know when you’ll see a 3rd Felix fic from me (although I might write short follow up ficlets to this story).
X
England, at that moment, was drenched in sunlight. Peering out the window from the confines of your kitchen, you could see the willow tree’s sweeping canopy of light green leaves sway in a rhythmic manner. You reluctantly averted your gaze from the tranquil tree to pour fresh boiling water from the kettle to a cream white teapot. The teabags steeped in the hot water and soon colored it green.
You delivered the teapot and several teacups to your living room’s coffee table just as a knock sounded on the door. “Coming!” you yelled as you settled the tray on the table and rushed to the front door. When you opened it, you were welcomed by the sight of your old friend, who wasted no time to leap at you and encircle her pale arms around your figure.
At twenty-one, your blonde-haired friend looked stunning as ever. Slim, tall, and pretty, Penny was not someone you would easily miss in a crowd, especially when she was a renowned owner of a potion shop in Diagon Alley, where you sometimes stopped by on days that St. Mungo relieved you of your mediwitch duties. “Am I late? Is Rowan here yet?”
Your lips quirked upward and you shook your head. “No, don’t worry,” you said and gestured a hand towards your sofa. “Come, sit. I brewed some tea for you and baked some pastries. Rowan should be arriving soon.”
As if on cue, you heard faint rumbling and you whipped your head to the empty fireplace across the room. A few seconds later, the rumbling intensified and the fireplace burst into emerald flames. When the flames abated, two figures you recognized to be Rowan and her small daughter Alisha stepped out. Rowan dusted off the Floo powder from Alisha’s sundress and then her own clothes before moving to pull you into a tight hug. “Merlin’s beard, it feels like I haven’t seen you both in years!”
You pulled away and rolled your eyes. “It’s only been about two months, Rowan,” you said as you watched her embrace Penny. Pulling your attention from them, you spotted Alisha rooted in the same spot near the fireplace, nibbling on her fist and curiously scouring the room with her big brown eyes. You approached her and knelt to her level. “Hello, sweetheart. Would you like some sweets? I have sweets on the table.” You offered her a hand.
Alisha looked over your shoulder at her mother and back at you. Shyly, she nodded and grasped half of your hand with her tiny fingers. You stood up and lead her to the coffee table, not missing the tender smiles on both of your friends’ faces.
Rowan and Penny seated themselves around the coffee table near you and soon, you fell into a chatter about the things that happened over the last few months: Ilvermorny's teaching job offer to Rowan; Penny’s sporadic love interests; the strange injuries you’d witnessed at St. Mungo’s; and even catching up with your other friends’ lives who you hadn’t spoken to in a while because of busy schedules.
While you chat with your friends, you couldn't help but dote on Rowan’s daughter on the side. At last, the conversation shifted from Sirius Black’s escape from Azkaban to you. “I still don’t understand why you don’t have children yet,” Rowan pondered out loud. “You and Felix would be such good parents, I’m sure of it.”
You gave a half-hearted laugh. “I’m a busy mediwitch and Felix . . . well, his job at the Ministry isn’t any easier.” It was true. Your differing schedules meant that you and Felix were hardly at home at the same time. Although, that wasn’t truly the reason why even two years into the marriage, you and your former Prefect remained childless.
After Felix graduated back in your third year, you’d lost contact with him, but you had heard whispers of his success and rumors that you did not have the heart to repeat. Your life at Hogwarts as a not-so-secret curse-breaker went on until you broke the curse on the last vault in your seventh year and you were hit with the harsh realization that your missing brother Jacob had been long gone.
Your family took Jacob home and buried him. And along with him, you buried any chance you had at a future of being a curse-breaker. The fire in you had diminished. You wanted to leave your past of troubles and mischief behind.
You graduated from Hogwarts and went back home, where you often walked the halls by yourself, lamenting over how lonely the house had become in your brother's definite absence. Your mother and father turned to the dark arts to cope over his death. They had never opposed the fanatical pureblood ideals in all the years you’ve known them. Now, they made it known that they wholly support it and You-Know-Who.
When you turned nineteen, they arranged a respectable marriage between you and a pureblood man: Felix Rosier, your former Prefect who you hadn’t seen in more than six years. At first, the arrangement proved to be uncomfortable for the both of you. You remembered being squeamish and him being aloof when you two were left alone to socialize in light of the engagement announcement. For a few months even after the marriage, your relationship wasn’t well, but after some time, your relationship fell into a pleasant friendship. And it has stayed that way even now.
“I hope he's treating you well.” Penny’s low voice cut through your thoughts.
“Of course,” you replied and patted Alisha’s head before facing your friends. “Felix has always treated me well. He is quite the gentleman, really. He respects my opinions and my boundaries, and he doesn’t hesitate to put my well-being above his.”
Penny looked at you and sipped on her tea. Out of all your friends, she was the only one to know that things weren’t always this way between you and Felix. Your relationship with him back at Hogwarts was that of a mentor and his successor, but after you wed, he had become cold and distant. You never knew why, but then again, you never set to find out
“Do you love him?” Rowan asked, and her question caught you off-guard that you almost froze in your seat.
When you didn’t speak, Rowan began to stutter out an apology. “No, don’t apologize. I was just reflecting. Felix and I are good friends, so of course I love him, but I know that’s not want you meant to ask,” you said. “I’ll admit . . . I love him. I find myself wanting to spend more time with him.”
“Does he know?” Rowan asked. You stared at your hands folded on your lap and sighed.
“He doesn’t.” He could not know. How could you tell him when he has never given you a reason to do it? Many purebloods married to keep their line pure. More often than not, their marriage was devoid of love. You and Felix were just another statistic to this fact.
Penny and Rowan must’ve sensed the discomfort in your voice. After the silence your reply entailed, you returned to discussing Sirius Black. Before long, the sun turned golden and painted the sky a blend of yellow, bright orange, and red. Alisha had dozed off with her head on your lap and her short legs sprawled on the sofa. After several minutes, Rowan took the sleeping Alisha from your lap and into her arms and prepared to bid you a goodbye.
“You better come and visit me before you move to America,” you said to Rowan, who replied with a “of course!” She tossed Floo powder into the fireplace and the same emerald flames from before came into view. Rowan cradled Alisha in her arms and flashed you a smile before she yelled the name of her residence. The fires engulfed her and she disappeared.
“I guess I should go, too. I need to head home soon,” Penny said. She slung her bag over her shoulder and turned to you with her arms spread wide. You grinned and let her arms envelop you. While in her arms, she whispered to you, her lips almost brushing against your earlobes: “You should tell him. You never know, he could be feeling the same way.”
You pulled away and shook your head. “And if he doesn’t? I’m afraid that it would ruin the friendship we’ve built, Penny. I’ll keep my feelings to myself. Our friendship is good enough for me.”
Penny wordlessly took your hand in hers and squeezed it. You wished she could stay; she has always been there for you in your loneliest times. You knew that once she was gone, you would be back to being alone in this big house until your husband returned from the Ministry.
Penny raised two fingers to her forehead in a salute and disapparated. Just like that, the house was silent again. You gazed out of the window that overlooked a whole field of wild white and lavender flowers and caught sight of the same willow tree you were admiring in the kitchen. Its drooping branches and leaves swayed less now. You read in a book once that the willow tree gives hope, safety, and a sense of belonging. You hadn’t felt that in a while.
As you turned away, your last words to Penny echoed in your head. Is it really enough? the voice in your head was faint, but it rang loud and clear in your mind.
X
To pass the time, you decided to clean the library. When Felix left the Rosier manor and insisted that the two of you to live by yourselves in this house, you’d opposed to having house-elves. There was no reason to have them when both of you kept your home neat and orderly in your spare time. Besides, you had no children.
You walked into the library with a feather duster in hand. As you cleared the surface of the mahogany table at the center of the room, you knocked over a shallow box. It fell and envelopes poured out onto the floor. You quickly knelt to pick them up.
Most of the envelopes were browning and some were torn open while some remained sealed. You examined the writings in the back of the envelopes. All of them had stamps and the penmanship was elegant. They were all addressed to Felix Rosier, and the return address was written at the top left corner below a woman’s name—a name that was familiar but you could not remember.
“YN?” the voice startled you. You looked over your shoulder to see Felix towering over your kneeling figure. You saw his eyes shift from you to the envelopes in your hands. With light and slow strides, Felix came to your side and started picking them off the floor and into the shallow box. You inhaled his scent—an aroma of coffee and bread. He must’ve stopped by a coffee shop in Diagon Alley on his way back.
“Sorry about that,” he murmured and helped you to your feet. “I haven’t had time to dispose of them,” he said. You, however, did not take notice of his words. You were too occupied with searching your mind for any mention of that woman and trying to attach a memory to her name.
Cool fingers lightly touched your arm. You blinked and found yourself mesmerized by Felix’s warm chestnut brown eyes behind his black-rimmed glasses. “Are you alright?” he asked.
“The writer of the letters,” you said, stumbling over your words, “who’s she?”
Felix retracted his fingers, cleared his throat and fiddled with the knot of his necktie. In almost two years you’ve been his wife, you came to identify this behavior as his way of showing that he was nervous. Whether he was aware of that or not was a mystery to you.
“She was my girlfriend,” he said after some hesitation, “before I married you.”
Your breath hitched in your throat. You remembered where you’d heard that name from now. You had heard it from the lips of a gossip in Diagon Alley.
When you and Felix wed, the wizarding world watched the two of you with careful eyes through the newspapers. You were Jacob’s sister, a pureblood witch famous in your own right for opening the cursed vaults, and Felix was one of the wealthy yet tarnished Rosier family’s heirs. The union certainly elicited some gossip, and one of them that you heard was that Felix was romantically involved with a woman, and his betrothal to you forced him to break it off.
What a horrible thing, you thought. Is that why he was so cold to me when we married?
“Do you still talk to her?” What you meant to ask was if he still loved her, but the words wouldn’t leave your mouth.
“No,” he said with seemingly no hesitation and walked past you to reorganize the surface of the mahogany table. “I haven’t spoken to her in years.”
“Oh.”
Silence reigned in the room until Felix, with his back turned against you, said, “You should go to bed. It is late and I don’t want you to wake up in the morning exhausted. I will take care of the library.”
“Are you sure?” you asked. You stared at his back. Although he said he no longer had contact with her, you felt unease and doubt creeping in. You were his wife but did he love you like he loved her? Could he love you like that? Deep down, you guessed the answer, and it left a bitter taste in your mouth.
“Do not worry about me, YN,” he said reassuringly. Still, he did not face you.
There was an impulse, a sudden urge for you to open your mouth and say something, but you only clenched your jaws tight. You decided then that maybe you’ll take Penny’s advice, but not at this moment.
With a final look, you left the library and headed to the bedroom you shared with him. Having already changed into your sleeping clothes earlier, you laid comfortably on one side of the big, cold bed and draped thin sheets over your body. The clock ticked as you laid still, waiting for Felix to open the door and lay by your side.
You stayed awake for what must have been hours, but he never came. Soon, your eyelids became too heavy. You looked outside and saw the bright stars that dotted the night sky gaze back. Then, the darkness welcomed you.
X
You slowly opened your eyes and propped your body on your elbows. The night sky greeted your sight first. Behind the translucent curtain and glass door leading to the balcony, the silver moon and stars shined bright. It could’ve had you in a trance if only soft snoring did not pull you from its enchantment. You jerked your head to the sound of the snore and found your eyes fixated on your husband.
A sudden realization occurred to you. Yesterday—the day after Penny and Rowan visited—you’d fallen asleep on the sofa after a tiring day at work. You didn’t recall waking up and coming up to your bedroom.
You furrowed your eyebrows. Did he carry me here?
Felix slept on his side, his body facing you. His chest rose and fell slowly and his lips parted to let out the soft snores you heard. Even in the dim lighting, you could make out his sharp cheekbones and jaws that you wanted to trace with your thumb. You inclined your head towards his and hovered your hand above his face. Your fingers lingered centimeters above his cheek before you sighed and untangled your body from the thin blanket.
The floor was cold underneath your bare feet as you strolled towards the balcony, running a hand along the smooth marble balustrade. The summer night air was chilly, but your body was still warm from sleeping under a blanket and being so intimately close to Felix so it did not bother you. In the distance were silhouettes of houses and trees, and the crickets filled the night with their song. You leaned onto the balustrade and breathed in. The sullen night soothed you, and you closed your eyes to familiarize yourself more with it and to get lost in your thoughts.
You kept them close for a while, even when you heard the glass door slide open, even when you shivered from the cold, and even when his footsteps stopped some unknown distance behind you. “It’s cold out here. You should come back to bed,” Felix said.
You made no sound. There were footsteps again, and then there were none. You only opened your eyes when you felt him drape a thin yet cozy blanket over your body. Felix stood beside you, his back straight. His hands were clasped together behind his back and his eyes were aimed at the night sky. He noticed that he did not wear his glasses tonight.
“Something on your mind?” he asked a few moments later. You looked away from him.
“Just thinking,” you said and pulled on the blanket to wrap your body tighter.
“I can tell that it’s troubling you. You can trust me, YN.”
“I know,” you replied and reflected on his words. Almost as low as a whisper, you asked, “Do you resent me?” You felt Felix freeze beside you.
“For what?”
Your mouth suddenly became dry so you swallowed before you continued, “They made you leave her for me. At least, that’s what I heard.”
“Oh,” Felix gave a soft sigh. You felt his eyes burning through you. “The past is in the past. I don’t hate you, although I do admit that I was too cold to you at first. For that, I am truly sorry. It was never your fault.”
“I’ve already forgiven you,” you said and looked at him under your lashes. There it was again: a question burning at the back of your throat, itching to come out, and Felix sensed it.
“There’s something more you want to say,” he stated.
Sometimes you hated how easily he could read you. You heaved a sigh before you began, “Can you . . . can you ever learn to love me? I know we married because of convenience, but . . .”
He didn’t say anything, and somehow, it felt like a thousand needles piercing your skin with heavy force. “Never mind, sorry, that was a foolish thing to ask,” you said quickly with a nervous laugh.
“No, just unexpected,” Felix finally spoke. “You are so brilliant, did you know?” he murmured, “Sometimes I wonder why you allowed yourself to marry me. I have never been a good husband to you.”
You frowned. “Hey, that’s not true.”
He only responded with silence. Somehow, you knew that what you said didn’t reassure him.
A few moments passed and you shivered more even under the blanket. The night wasn’t turning out well, and you wanted to sleep it away. “You’re right, Felix. It is cold. We better come back to bed.” You turned to leave, but Felix caught your wrist. The sudden gesture almost made you let go of the blanket.
“Wait, I never answered your question,” he said.
“Oh, listen, you don’t really need to—”
“Please, I think you’d want to know.” His brown eyes were serious and pleading, and gentle like his grip on you. “I can learn to love you, but if I’m being honest, I think I already have.”
That took you by surprise. “You have?”
“For a while now, I keep finding myself thinking of your laughter and smile. I will not lie and say that it didn’t make me smile too,” he said. “I didn’t know how to tell you. For two years, we have been treating each other as friends, not lovers. I didn’t want to ruin what we have.”
He was doing exactly the same thing as you! You couldn’t help but let out a chuckle, and Felix shot you a confused look. “It’s just that . . . well, you’re also describing me and my feelings,” you said.
Felix smiled and let go of your wrist. “I guess we’re an odd couple.”
“I suppose,” you said and mirrored his expression.
Felix closed some spaced between the two of you and cupped your chin gently. “If I may, Mrs. Rosier . . . I would like to make you smile and laugh. I would like us to love each other, the way it should have been.”
You stared into his brown eyes and for the first time in a long time, you felt hope, safety, and a sense of belonging. Just like that beautiful willow tree that you admired. “That would be lovely, Mr. Rosier.”

Excerpt:
A $119.5-million settlement announced Wednesday of claims stemming from the Aliso Canyon gas leak marks the biggest action yet to deal with the health effects and climate damage of the largest release of methane in U.S. history.
The deal between Southern California Gas Co. and city, county and state officials and prosecutors will fund a long-sought health study and numerous environmental measures intended to offset the damage caused by the leak.
But it leaves unresolved questions about the root cause of the leak, the fate of the storage facility outside Los Angeles’ Porter Ranch neighborhood, the state’s reliance on planet-warming natural gas and residents’ medical claims against the company.
The tentative agreement will resolve agencies’ lawsuits against the utility for violating the state’s health and safety laws by failing to promptly control the leak and alert authorities.
In exchange, the gas company will pay civil penalties as well as $25 million for the long-term health study and $26.5 million for greenhouse gas emissions projects. An additional $45.4 million will fund other environmental projects — some of them far from the site and unrelated to greenhouse gases.
Among the other projects funded:
$3 million to develop a real-time air-monitoring network and a symptom- and incident-reporting system
$5 million for electric school buses and mobile asthma clinics
$7.1 million to install air filtration systems at public schools in heavily polluted “environmental justice” communities of L.A. County
$5.2 million for lead paint abatement of homes near the closed Exide battery recycling plant in southeast L.A. County

INTERIOR DEMOLITION
What is Interior Demolition?
There are various terms used in building renovation. These terms are:
Interior Demolition – defined as taking apart the interior of a structure in a safe manner while preserving the exterior portion and other areas not scheduled for demolition. This could include demolition of walls, partitions, finishes, equipment, pipes, fittings, etc. as would be required for an interior renovation project.
Select demolition – the removal of components, portions of structures, or interior finishes while protecting the remaining structure.
Deconstruction – taking a building apart while carefully preserving valuable materials of the building components for re-use. Or, the selective dismantlement of building components, specifically for re-use, recycling, or waste management. All of the above referenced demolition or deconstruction techniques may require asbestos abatement and / or lead-based paint abatement prior to demolition or deconstruction.

Familiar with over-commitment, under-performance and unreliability?
How many times have you been frustrated by unprofessional subs? They over-commit their crew so they’re late to the job and cause delays. They under-perform the work so you don’t end up getting the level of quality you expect or that was promised to you. They don’t communicate with you, leave you hanging, and just plain don’t do what they say they’re going to do…they’re unreliable.
A key ingredient to a successful project is a dependable subcontractor. That’s what we’re all about. But don’t just take our word for it, read about our capabilities and see for yourself how we overcome the three biggest problems you face.
