[Review] Sega Pocket Arcade: Ecco the Dolphin (1995)
A rare dolphin treat.
A while ago I bought the Sega Pocket Arcade: Ecco the Dolphin from 1994 (pictured on the left, below). Much to my dismay, problems with the unit design caused hardware issues that rendered the game unplayable. Still, it’s a great collector’s item in a unique form factor. However, a much rarer item is the second Ecco the Dolphin handheld from 1995-according to the back of the unit (pictured on the right)-or 1997 going by the packaging. Although Tiger is often credited for the initial “red label” games in this line, their branding is absent from the packaging so Sega of America may have internally developed the first model and manufactured it in the US, but the 1995 blue label model was certainly and proudly developed by the experienced LCD game company Tiger and made in China… and by the way, the hardware did not almost instantly fail on me.
Sega’s initial Pocket Arcade line had a few different case designs, some with slide-out screens. Their clamshell units included Ecco, Columns, and Football. When Tiger took over, all of their line, such as this second Ecco, Nights, and the enticing Panzer Dragoon, used the screen-protecting clamshell design. They also seem to universally use a much smaller inset screen compared to the first lineup, no doubt a cost-saving measure that unfortunately hampers playability somewhat.
Now, observe the two units side by side. Note the differences in screen layout and button distribution. These are in fact two completely separate games with differing design, graphics, and controls. Both have Ecco auto-swimming to the right, avoiding hostile sea life over a number of levels, but each has unique features. The first game has an active sonar mechanic, which can reveal tunnels to swim through (similar to the OG dolphin game, Activision’s Dolphin) and interact with glyphs. It has a speed control mechanic, hazardous seagulls above the waves, and dolphin family members to rescue, not to mention descriptive level write-ups in the manual.
By contrast, this second unit seems simpler, more of a straightforward survival game. But there’s enough depth for an LCD game, with three planes of action and the life/air bars to juggle. Surfacing for air is necessary but sometimes blocked by a jellyfish, and health can be refilled by tapping the Eat button on the lower lane when a fish comes along amongst the coral. There are many hazards on the bottom layer to be wary of, though.
The biggest foe is the octopus who emerges from the right to menace two lanes with tentacular ferocity! Combine this with a jelly up top and you’re in a right pickle. However, a back-dodge can grant temporary sanctuary especially when chained together. More types of sharks appear as the levels progress to threaten each lane, and other, more difficult to identify, creatures add to the dangers of the deep. This game features a passive sonar to help you avoid the larger threats, with a sort of status bar that displays the direction of imminent attacks.
There are six levels in total (compared to the first unit’s seven), with the action speeding up as you advance. Beat level six and you win the game, or so the cardboard insert claims. The pace of gameplay and the intense rate at which your air depletes at this stage meant that I couldn’t manage to clear it. Your number of lives resets to 3 on each stage, so there’s no way to stock up or lasting penalty for taking a few dings. The game also tracks your score, which as far as I could tell just increases naturally as you progress regardless of your actions. It seems a little pointless, especially because it maxes out at 9990 partway through level five!
The soundscape is a few mere beeps and dare I say boops governed by your actions, and the majority of the backdrop is just a blue gradient… of course, this means it doesn’t obscure sprites like some other LCD games’ busy backgrounds. Those sprites are lovely, distinctive and detailed. Well, most of them anyway; some of the enemy critters don’t show up well on this tiny screen.
From what I could tell of the first unit, it tries to make each level somewhat distinctive, with an adventure feel as you can start from any stage you’ve unlocked, while this second one is content to just up the speed and add a couple of new enemy types as you advance, making it more of a score-chasing action game. It does have some nice little touches though, like the land edges that border each stage, and the lightning storm in the skies above, while the printed sandy coral layer on the sea floor mitigates the lack of the stunning sky vista the first game had. The two complement each other well, and I feel a lucky collector indeed to now own both, even if the first one is busted and the second has an ever so small screen. I just love dolphin games that much!

Steamdeck OLED review/impressions
Thought I'd leave some points to my experience as I have been fiddling with it a couple of days now.
This is also, in some ways, a review of the Steam Deck as a system.
Screen
The Steamdeck has a screen which is pretty small by tablet standards today, but about the same size as the screen on the Nintendo Switch.
The OLED screen is nice and colourful. I no longer have my LCD to compare it to, but the extra few centimeters helps a lot.
I wouldn't recommend you upgrade just for the screen, however, as it is not that different from the LCD in terms of quality.
I have noticed no issues with my screen, I have seen lots of people report problems but I have identified no dead pixels or glare issues.
I am using a glossy screen with a glossy protector. I tried a matte screen protector, which helped significantly with glare, but it gave a glittery and grainy effect on the screen, so it had to be removed. The glossy protector did not affect image in any way. It was fiddly to apply all the protectors, but I got there in the end.
The good news is that the screen can go very bright, and if it is on high brightness then glare is never going to be an issue. So don't worry about which screen type you buy.
Battery
The Steamdeck has a pretty weak battery if you are running most PC games.
The LCD only lasted me an hour if I was playing Monster Hunter World or Balder's Gate 3, and if I played it to depletion, it would bug out on me. More on that shortly.
The OLED seems to have a much better battery. I have been doing a lot of low performance stuff, but I played L4D2 for over an hour earlier, and it only ate maybe 20% of the battery. I played some World today and it only ate another 20% in half an hour with a high performance game, so I think that this unit will do more comparably to the original Nintendo Switch. In all cases I had brightness maxed out.
On emulated games, if you're running gamecube or PS2, it is negligible, however if you run Wii U games it will eat a lot more power (understandably). The fastest drain for me so far was Xenoblade Chronicles X. The other Xenoblade Chronicles games can drain my Switch in an hour, so this isn't a surprise.
This was the main reason I upgraded. I don't mind having the original Switch with its poorer battery performance, but with the Steamdeck LCD it was so bad that the console was barely usable. This change may seem small, but it will make the Steamdeck much more usable for me. Especially as sometimes I am taking 6 hour flights on low voltage planes that struggle to charge my deck.
Performance
The Steamdeck can do most older games very well, but if you're aiming at something released in the past couple of years, it is going to struggle. It plays Monster Hunter Rise like a dream, and I swear that it runs Monster Hunter World better than it used to (the game was updated for deck), but Baldur's Gate 3 will look very ugly texture-wise. Then again, that game looks horrible on any computer that came out before 2021.
You will be playing most demanding games on the low to mid settings.
The irony is, while it looked horrendous, Baldur's Gate 3 performed better on deck than on my PC, and I believe this is because the game has high Memory costs. While my PC's processor and graphics card are superior, it only has 8gb of memory to the Steamdeck's 16gb.
I never played a game where the 8gb was an issue until Baldur's Gate 3. It only affected me if I was connected to lots of streams on Discord. I will compare again when I have my new mid range 32gb memory PC next week.
On the OLED, a game with low performance costs like Left 4 Dead 2 will happily push towards the 90 frames per second limit. Of course, you're going to struggle to get Monster Hunter World over 30fp unless the graphics are very low.
So the Steamdeck is about the equivalent of an entry level or mid range 2018 Gaming PC. It is outdated but it plays most of the classics well.
Controls
The steamdeck's control sticks are quite large, so they're not the best option for people with small hands like myself. However I reckon this makes the unit popular with its primary audience (adult men who struggle with the small controls of the Switch, which are perfect for me).
The haptic mouse pad is okay, but it is obviously no replacement for an actual mouse. It's slightly worse than a laptop trackpad, I think, but at least it continues to move a bit if you swipe it like a ballpoint mouse would, rather than only being "on" or "off". I report no issues with this item, it does everything you will need it to when controlling from desktop mode or with a pointer-based game.
The buttons are okay, I think the right hand buttons are too small and close to the joystick for comfort, and I think the back paddles are too large and the L5/R5 buttons are too low down. It's not exactly easy to click L5 with your baby finger if you have tiny hands like me. The xbox controller is a better option than the steamdeck base controls. It is unfortunate the console doesn't come with a stand like the Switch does, and you have to buy third party options.
What impresses me most is the gyroscopic controls built into the device. I thought playing a shooter like Left 4 Dead 2 would be impossible, but because of the gyroscope, my aiming is as good as any keyboard and mouse player! Just like when playing Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time 3D. Even though I can't control the joysticks very well. I don't need them for those fine little movements anymore.
I must add that the Gyro only works on its default settings if you are touching the centre of the right joystick, or the trackpad. I did not like this at all because I needed to move my thumb to press different buttons. Fortunately there was a community layout which enabled gyro at all times. I was able to change the sensitivity on the game's steam options. You may also be able to enable it or disable it permanently by messing around with your own settings.
Compatibility
The biggest obstacle to Steamdeck is the Linux operating system, which upon the console's release, had very little compatibility with most normal tools. Wii USB Helper, the Wii U emulation tool, was completely incompatible. And the reason most games need to be optimised for Deck isn't because of their actual performance costs, it's because they don't run well on Linux.
Originally when playing Devil May Cry 5, the game would crash for no reason, and playing Monster Hunter World, the textures would crash and you would be left surrounded by a glitched out void if the monster you were fighting did a move that the system didn't like.
I think that over the past year, with the popularity of Steamdeck, a lot of developers have taken to making their games run better on Linux. As for the above Wii USB helper tool, there is something called WiiUDownloader which does the same thing and is Linux compatible. So I have had a much better time.
Emulation
It was a huge pain in the ass setting everything up and troubleshooting, especially because of the closed-off technical lingo used in emulation circles. But Emudeck has been a great help in getting everything set up. It is all you need for Gamecube.
I have issues with emulation tools not searching the SD card where Emudeck is installed. They keep searching the "Home" directory for things like their BIOS. Either I need to manually write in the correct path, or it's impossible and I need to copy the bios onto the main Deck. I am not sure if this is an issue with steamdeck or the emulation tools themselves, but it was a pain.
The good news is when you finally have these games running, they play very well. I think some of them perform better on a dedicated gaming unit like the Steamdeck than they do on a Windows computer which has dozens of processes running at the same time.
Lots of work has been done with emulation tools since 2021 to give them maximum compatibility with Linux and Steamdeck, as they know this is the main portable platform for those tools now.
I have had plenty of success with PS2 games, Gamecube games, and Wii U games, once everything was set up to Steam ROM Manager and saved to Steam. You can use community controller layouts on Steam that make things way easier to set up than they would be on a Windows PC.
I haven't had any success with Yuzu, the Switch emulator. This isn't necessary for me but it just seems like it isn't finding the keys that Emudeck set up.
Docked mode
I have mostly experimented with this on my LCD prior to the latest update, but I have fiddled with it on the 3.5 update this Sunday.
I have a Toshiba LED Flatscreen TV from ten years ago. It has no issues with any consoles of any kind, though I've never tested it with a PC before.
It is 50/50 as to whether the Dock works. At first it wasn't reacting at all. Now it seems to be compatible on Gaming mode, this could be because I forced lower resolution for screen compatibility.
However, on Desktop mode, when I used the automatic settings, the screen was flickering black and turning off altogether. I searched online for a solution, but unfortunately nothing I saw was helping.
I saw that it was trying to run at 24hz 1080p. I couldn't change the framerate, but I lowered the resolution to 720p and it became locked at 60hz.
This seemed to fix the issue, but now the resolution is too small and there doesn't seem to be a way to force it to change without also lowering the framerate to unusable levels. Odd as I am pretty sure you can force Windows to a massive resolution and the text will just look very tiny on your screen.
I will attribute this to my TV being too old for a modern computer, and maybe it's just a 720p tv, as I have had no issues with the two LCD tvs that my dad owns. I'm not eager on the idea of replacing my TV just for the steamdeck, but if it has no issues in Gaming Mode, it's not going to be a priority anyway.
As for the controller connection, well, it was initially pain in the ass trying to get my xbox series x controller connected. For some reason the bluetooth wasn't doing the job. But after a firmware update on my controller, it went a lot smoother.
What I did not like was you couldn't wake Steamdeck from sleep with the controller.
I have heard this isn't a problem on the OLED, but I am sure a firmware update on the original Steamdeck could have solved the problem. And if not - Why? We have been using bluetooth controllers to wake consoles since 2006! I saw someone claim you can't wake a PC from sleep with a bluetooth controller, so I immediately tested it and... woke my PC from sleep. Why does the Steamdeck LCD have worse wireless functionality than the Nintendo Wii?
Overall
People ask on this sub if the console will replace their gaming PCs. In my case, no, as it has to be a very old gaming PC for the steamdeck to be more powerful.
Generally it hasn't replaced my Switch, either, as the Steamdeck's battery life is too limited for long sessions (or cafe gaming as I like to do), and it is a worse Multiplayer console than the Switch. Especially as I had to get the dock separately. The console's portability is limited by its great size, too. I have bought a special case that is smaller than the stock one, but it can only do so much.
However i have found the steamdeck to be useful when I am travelling with access to power outlets and want a gaming PC on the go when I am staying with my partner, or when I simply want to sit in a different room of the house and play Monster Hunter.
The OLED also has a nice screen that makes me choose to play some games on there instead of on my PC screen.
The gimmick of playing demanding Pc games on such a tiny console is fun, and the gyro functionality has opened a lot of options for me that I hadn't previously considered. Maybe it is time to return to DOOM.
I love my steamdeck. After I was happy with my OLED setup, I said goodbye to it and traded it in at CEX. I will transfer that love over to my OLED and even though it isn't immediately that useful, I will find a lot of use for it over the next year with my travelling.

With its sleek design and feature-packed build, this smartphone aims to capture the attention of those who need a reliable device without breaking the bank. Why are we reviewing the Redmi 14R? Because it’s not just another budget phone — it pushes boundaries in the entry-level market with features typically found in higher-end devices, like a 120Hz display and a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor. We’re diving deep to explore if the Redmi 14R truly lives up to the hype. This review is for anyone passionate about consumer electronics, especially those on the lookout for a powerful yet budget-friendly smartphone. Whether you’re a casual user who enjoys browsing and streaming, or someone who needs a dependable device for work and play, the Redmi 14R might just be the perfect fit. Key Features & Specifications The Xiaomi Redmi 14R is packed with features that strike a balance between performance and price. Let’s break them down into simple sections to make it easy for you to see what this device offers: Display 6.88-inch HD+ LCD Screen This large screen gives you plenty of room to enjoy videos, apps, and games. The 120Hz refresh rate means everything looks super smooth, from scrolling through social media to playing games. It also has a 600 nits peak brightness, so even in bright sunlight, the display remains easy to see. Processor & Performance Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC This is the "brain" of the phone, handling all tasks with ease. Whether you’re switching between apps, playing games, or streaming, this processor keeps things fast and responsive. Up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM More RAM means better multitasking. You can run several apps without slowing down your phone. 256GB UFS 2.2 Storage (Expandable to 1TB) Store all your photos, videos, and apps with ample storage, plus the option to add even more space with a microSD card. Battery & Charging 5,160mAh Battery This large battery will easily last you all day, even with heavy use like watching videos or gaming. 18W Fast Charging When you do need to charge, the fast charging feature ensures you’re back up and running quickly. Camera 13MP Rear Camera The main camera captures everyday moments with decent clarity, making it great for social media posts or casual photography. 5MP Front Camera Perfect for video calls and selfies, this front camera is good for staying connected with friends and family. Other Notable Features Side-Mounted Fingerprint Scanner This makes unlocking your phone quick and easy, keeping your data secure. 3.5mm Headphone Jack For those who still love wired headphones, the Redmi 14R has you covered. Dedicated MicroSD Slot Expand your storage up to 1TB with a microSD card, perfect for media lovers who need extra space for photos, videos, and music. These features combine to make the Xiaomi Redmi 14R a strong contender in the budget smartphone market, offering a great balance of performance and value that’s easy to understand and appreciate. Performance The Xiaomi Redmi 14R delivers a surprisingly strong performance for a budget device, thanks largely to its Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor. This chipset, paired with up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, ensures smooth multitasking and efficient handling of everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and running apps. App Performance Apps open quickly, and switching between them is fluid, making the Redmi 14R a solid choice for users who need reliable day-to-day performance. The phone handles casual gaming well, with titles like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 running smoothly at moderate settings. The 120Hz display further enhances the gaming experience by offering smoother visuals and touch response, although for more graphically intense games, users may need to lower settings to avoid frame drops.
Software and User Experience Running on Android 14-based HyperOS, the Redmi 14R offers an intuitive, user-friendly experience. HyperOS is designed to minimize lag, ensuring that even with multiple apps running, the phone remains responsive. The UI feels light and clean, without too much bloatware, which helps maintain smooth operation and efficiency. Gaming and Graphics With its Adreno GPU, the Redmi 14R can handle moderate graphic tasks and casual gaming smoothly. Games like Call of Duty Mobile run decently, though heavy gaming over long periods may cause some minor heating. The 120Hz refresh rate significantly improves the gaming experience, offering smooth transitions and fast responsiveness, which is rare at this price point. Battery and Heat Management The large 5,160mAh battery pairs well with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2’s efficiency, ensuring you can go through a full day of moderate to heavy use without needing to recharge. Even with gaming or video streaming, the phone shows no major battery drain concerns. Heat management is solid for a budget device. During prolonged gaming sessions or heavy multitasking, the phone warms up slightly but never to the point of discomfort or performance throttling. Final Thoughts on Performance For a device in the budget category, the Xiaomi Redmi 14R delivers well-rounded, smooth performance across the board. It won’t match flagship devices in raw power, but for casual users, students, or anyone seeking a reliable phone for everyday use and light gaming, it performs admirably without hiccups. Value for Money When it comes to budget smartphones, the Xiaomi Redmi 14R certainly stands out for delivering solid features at an affordable price. So, is it worth the price? Let’s break it down. The Redmi 14R falls within the $150 - $200 price range, depending on storage options and deals. For this price, you're getting a 120Hz display, a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, and a massive 5,160mAh battery — features you’d typically see in more expensive devices. Why It’s a Good Deal: Performance for the Price: The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor offers a smooth experience, whether you're multitasking or gaming, which is impressive at this price point. Display Quality: A 120Hz screen at this price is a rare find. It makes scrolling, gaming, and watching videos feel smooth and enjoyable. Battery Life: With a 5,160mAh battery, this phone will easily last you a day or more with regular use. For the price, this kind of battery performance is a huge plus. Expandable Storage: The option to expand storage up to 1TB with a microSD card means you're not limited by the phone's internal memory, giving you great flexibility. How It Compares to Competitors: When compared to other smartphones in the same price range, like models from Realme, Samsung, or Motorola, the Redmi 14R shines in terms of its display and performance. While competitors might offer similar processors or battery life, few bring the 120Hz refresh rate and the ability to expand storage as generously as Xiaomi does. Available Deals: Xiaomi is known for running promotions, especially during flash sales or major shopping events like Black Friday or Singles’ Day. Keep an eye out for discounts that can drop the price even further, making this already budget-friendly phone an even better deal. Processor: While the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 in the Redmi 14R and 14C provides reliable performance, Realme C55 with its Helio G88 is designed for better gaming, though it might not be as power-efficient. Camera: If photography is a priority, Realme C55 and Samsung A14 have the edge with 50MP primary cameras, offering clearer shots than the 13MP camera on the Redmi 14R. Battery & Charging: The Redmi 14R has a large battery, but Realme C55 offers faster charging at 33W, a step ahead of the 18W on the Xiaomi model. Price: The Redmi 14R holds its own in terms of value, sitting comfortably in the budget-friendly range, but offering a smoother display and solid all-round performance. In short, the Redmi 14R shines in terms of display and overall value, while competitors like Realme C55 and Samsung A14 might appeal more to those who prioritize camera quality or faster charging. Pros and Cons: Xiaomi Redmi 14R Conclusion The Xiaomi Redmi 14R strikes an impressive balance between affordability and performance, making it a standout option in the budget smartphone category. With its 120Hz display, dependable Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, and long-lasting 5,160mAh battery, it offers features you typically wouldn’t expect at this price point. Xiaomi has managed to pack in just the right amount of innovation to make it worth your while. If you’re someone who values a smooth display experience, needs reliable performance for everyday tasks, and appreciates a battery that can keep up with your busy schedule, the Redmi 14R is worth considering. The expandable storage and inclusion of a headphone jack are bonuses that will appeal to users who still like having those traditional features. That said, if you're looking for a phone with a high-end camera or cutting-edge performance for intense gaming or heavy multitasking, this might not be the ideal choice. However, for most casual users, students, or those simply looking for a solid phone at a great price, the Xiaomi Redmi 14R ticks all the right boxes. Recommendation For budget-conscious buyers who want a reliable, feature-packed phone that offers fantastic value for money, the Xiaomi Redmi 14R is an easy recommendation.

I tried the Wendy's Chocolate Frosty small size and it was pretty good.
This frosty was smooth and creamy while also having a light chocolate taste to it but doesn't taste artificial tasting to me.
This tasted like a light Hershey's chocolate milkshake to me.
This was lightly sweet but not overly sweet to me.
I'm only reviewing the frosty and the toy.
I reviewed the Spongebob burger which is just a Dave's double but had thousand island sauce on it and same with the fries but I will put how much the burger and fries weighed.
The Dave's single I got didn't have cheese on it.
The onions, tomatoes, and lettuce tasted fresh while also crunchy in texture.
The ketchup and mayo were creamy and the ketchup had a light tomato taste.
The beef was firm and soft in texture with a light beef taste but I miss the American cheese on this burger since that would have tied the flavors together.
I would eat this again but with cheese.
The Dave's Single weighed 204 g and the small fries weighed 112 g.
My chocolate frosty weighed 5.9 fl oz.
I really like the bag this food came in and it is pleasing to the eyes but I wish that Wendy's made a new burger that had muenster cheese or have a ghost pepper bun with sauce to match but that would have to make company have effort.
This meal came with a glow in the dark figure and a coupon book for a small frosty.
The last time I remember Wendy's having a glow in the dark toy it was for the 90's glo ahead toy line and I have all four toys but I only need to find that weird skull one with wheels but I do have the fake goop glasses, the suction cup monster, and the conjoined boy with girl figure.
I always like glow in the dark kids meal toys since those are my favorite types of toys with the kids meal toys next to the cheap LCD beeping video game like toys.
I got the normal glow in the dark frosty toy but I want to get the all white X-ray version of this figure later.
This figure is 4 inches from the top of the head to the foot.
The Glo Ahead glow in the dark toys from 90s still hold up their glowing effect but get yellowed in the process and are soft plastic.
While the glow in the dark frost figure is hard plastic and glows a little bit but not as strong as the 90s Glo Ahead toys.
Images not mine but link is there.
Wendy's 1993 - Glo Ahead - Lot of 4 Different MIP | eBay
This was for the 2024 Halloween seasonal deal that started at October 21, 2024 and ends when Wendy's runs out by people reselling the figures.
I would eat this again.
The calories for the meal.

This was 2022
What did I do in 2022? The year in review, from me to you.
2022 has been eventful for me. I got a new job and seemingly a new chronic illness?? So it’s been up and down. As far as my hobbies go w/r/t this blog, things have been a little slow, perhaps due to the aforementioned factors.
In my capacity as a scanlator of video game comics, I did publish that holy grail manga that I’d been longing for: the comic adaptation of the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie. There was also the Famicom Manga mini-comic for Zelda 1. And that’s it. I’ve been gradually working on a Diddy Kong Racing 4koma volume, which might be released next year but at the rate it’s going I don’t want to make any promises. My filehosting account being taken down was a setback for making my work on comics available but I managed to get all of it up in various places, in particular maintaining my page on Mangadex. Also, recently my incredible spouse has helped me establish my own website! It’s a work in progress (and not really ready for public viewing just yet) but I wanted it primarily as a convenient way to browse my scanlations as well as a hub for my other hobbies. This Tumblr is not going away, I just felt I needed something more permanent.
I’ve continued creating pixel art cast portraits and posting them here as well as on DeviantArt. This year I did some Zelda, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings along with a few shows, as well as updating the big Donkey Kong collage (now up to 327 characters!).
Podcasts? Just a few. 1 new episode of the Donkey Kong Arcade Era Power Hour with Gibbon, and 3 Eurovision commentaries. I kept a consistent streaming schedule, with 48 almost-weekly streams of various retro and indie games. Doing these makes me happy, and I covered a few queer-themed Itch bundles, cracked DSiWare emulation, continued delving into Donkey Kong fan works and bootlegs, and explored the fringes of Sonic and Lord of the Rings games, among many others. The streams are all archived here.
In my regular gaming habits, I did a big bonanza of Lord of the Rings-adjacent games. This was really interesting and culminated in a month spent in the still-running MMO originally from 2007. Aside from this I played the modern Doom games, a selection of cat and primate games, all of the 2D Dimps-developed Sonic games, more Picross, and some cool LCD and self-contained game units (more on that in the new year as well). I’ve also just hacked my 3DS in the last few days, which opens up possibilities for some region-exclusive titles becoming available to me.
And now the awards show. “Best not-Donkey Kong game”: Marsupilami: Hoobadventure (also wins “best post-launch update” for adding a new free world). “Best open world”: Lord of the Rings Online with the surprise upset; in my hot take opinion, Elden Ring would’ve been better without an open world...! Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was also a runner-up. “Most improved sequel”: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King console game. After playing The Two Towers for the first time this was a big step up. Runners-up are Shadow of War again, Anodyne 2, Sonic Advance 2, and Sonic Rush Adventure. The Toejam & Earl games were too different to compare fairly. “Best co-op game that we haven’t finished yet so I haven’t reviewed”: Darksiders: Genesis. Runner-up is Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga. The “Thoughts and Emotions” award: Anodyne 2. Runners-up are Stray, Elden Ring, and Gibbon: Beyond the Trees.
Thanks for reading, and see you next year!

Steam Deck Weekly: Gamescom 2024 Steam Deck News, Reviews Including Bakeru and SCHiM, New Verified Games, Discounts, and More - Journal Today Web https://www.merchant-business.com/steam-deck-weekly-gamescom-2024-steam-deck-news-reviews-including-bakeru-and-schim-new-verified-games-discounts-and-more/?feed_id=177118&_unique_id=66ca902e87bd7 #GLOBAL - BLOGGER BLOGGER Welcome to this week’s edition of the Steam Deck Weekly. I delayed publishing this because Gamescom 2024 is on right now with news from Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live, game announcements, show floor information, and more. If you missed my Black Myth: Wukong Steam Deck review, read it here. Today’s article has Steam Deck impressions for Bakeru and Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, reviews of a few notable indies, Shaun’s take on the Warhammer 40K: Boltgun DLC, bundles, new Steam Deck Verified games, and more. Let’s get into the reviews and impressions first.Steam Deck Game Reviews & ImpressionsBakeru Steam Deck ReviewWhen Bakeru was released in Japan, a friend of mine imported it and praised it quite a bit. I tried the demo and was turned off by the technical issues. It was charming, but not enough to put up with no localization and performance issues on Switch. When it leaked on the eShop, I was hoping we’d see performance improvements or a port to PC. We ended up getting both more or less. Bakeru’s Switch release in the West is improved over the Japanese launch version, and it is also now on PC with an excellent port.Bakeru is an action platformer from Good-Feel who are most known for the Yoshi games and also more-recently Princess Peach Showtime from Nintendo. The studio has done some games outside Nintendo brands, and the newest in this line of non Nintendo games from Good-Feel is Bakeru. Shaun will be doing a full review for this one, but so far Bakeru feels and plays great on Steam Deck.On Steam Deck and PC, Bakeru lets you adjust display mode (windowed and borderless only), resolution (with full 16:10 support), toggle v-sync, adjust frame rate cap (Note that v-sync off means the game runs at 60fps. Turn it on if you would like to play at your monitor’s refresh rate or at 90fps on Steam Deck OLED), anti-aliasing (off, FXAA, SMAA), adjust filtering quality (trilinear, 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x), and draw distance (low, medium, high).I played Bakeru on both my Steam Decks. My LCD is running the newest SteamOS beta. On that, I had zero issues with the game and it ran at a locked 60fps at maximum settings. On Steam Deck OLED running the public build of the OS, I only had some issues at 90fps. This seemingly wasn’t related to the settings, but something in the game because I had some shader-related or traversal stuttering in parts, but they only happened initially. I imagine Bakeru will be Steam Deck Verified soon as it runs perfectly if you play at 60fps and near-perfectly at 90fps.The one issue I ran into pre-release that Spike Chunsoft and the developers already fixed is button prompts being incorrectly displayed. This had the game showing Switch positions instead of Xbox ones when using my 8BitDo Xbox controller or the Steam Deck itself. I’m glad this was resolved pre-release as the game has no port issues, and it is dramatically better than the Switch version. When using a DualSense, it correctly showed PlayStation prompts with the proper labels and positions as well.Bakeru is a good platformer that I recommend playing on PC over Switch right now. The Switch version, despite performance improvements over the Japanese demo, still has too much variance in its performance to be an easy recommendation. The HD Rumble there is nice, but everything else holds it back. On PC, you miss out on the HD Rumble, but Bakeru runs a lot better across the board, and I’ve been enjoying digging into it over the last week. Stay tuned for Shaun’s full review of the Switch version in the near future.Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Steam Deck ReviewThere have been many game franchises that I completely missed out on over the years.
The Sam & Max series of games is one of those. When I was offered a code to play Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, I figured now was the time to finally play these games with the new remasters. If you’re just here for the game itself, I urge you to read Shaun’s Switch review here. I’m going to focus on how it plays on Steam Deck.Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse is the final game in the episodic Sam & Max main trilogy. This new remaster is amazing in basically every way. This includes how it controls, looks, sounds, and feels. It even has many accessibility options to make things go smoothly if you’re new to this kind of adventure game. You can toggle different hint levels and disable flashing in the accessibility settings. On the graphics and display side, you can play Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse at higher resolutions when docked on Steam Deck, but performance doesn’t hold close to 60fps if you play at 4K. I recommend sticking to it in handheld mode for a 60 or higher experience. You can adjust the graphics quality, texture quality, anti-aliasing, toggle v-sync, and adjust display mode and resolution in the graphics settings. With Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, I’m glad I finally got around to playing these games. Not only are they all absolutely worth your time and money, but they play superbly on Steam Deck. I’d love for the remasters to hit iPad, but until then the Steam Deck is my favorite way to play Skunkape Games’ remasters.SCHiM Steam Deck ReviewGiven the sheer amount of releases lately, I didn’t get around to playing SCHiM much at launch. I’m glad I finally rectified that because it is equal parts charming and gorgeous, and it has been the perfect game to relax with as a break from the longer upcoming games I’m playing for review right now. Developers Ewoud van der Werf and Nils Slijkerman have released a brilliant take on a 3D platformer using light, shadow, and more for puzzles, and it is all elevated by excellent audio.Aside from the striking aesthetic, what really carries SCHiM through its four or so hours long runtime is the animation work and sound design. As you work towards solving the various puzzles in the game, every interaction has a lovely little animation, and it all feels beyond polished when played at a rock solid 90fps on Steam Deck OLED. The blend of the shadows and lights for puzzles also are enhanced by the screen in handheld mode.So SCHiM runs perfectly out of the box on Steam Deck at 90fps, but how about docked? When played at 720p docked, it nearly does a locked 144fps. Playing at 1080p results in well over 100fps at all times. SCHiM supports 16:10 as well which is great to see on Steam Deck. I have no complaints with it aside from the fact that it might seem short for its price to some, and that there really is no evolution of the mechanics over the course of the game. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, it does hold SCHiM down from perfection.SCHiM is a lovely abstract take on games like Frogger for the modern era. Come into this expecting a work of art with excellent audio design more than a complex puzzle game. I enjoyed just about every level despite the mechanics not really evolving. I enjoyed it enough on Steam Deck to order a physical copy of the Switch version from Japan already. This is definitely worth your time if you enjoy delightful, gorgeous, and relaxing puzzle games.SCHiM Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5Gestalt: Steam and Cinder Steam Deck ReviewGestalt: Steam and Cinder is another game I wish I got around to playing sooner like SCHiM above. It has been on the review backlog for a bit now, but having played it, this action platformer is fantastic. Not only does it nail the aesthetic with its blend of 16 and 32-bit visuals, but the sound design, story, and gameplay are sublime. What initially drew me to Gestalt: Steam and Cinder, is the steampunk visual style in pixel art. I adore the character designs, but wasn’t sure another action platformer would be able to hit hard enough for me in recent years.
Having played it, the story is very good, but without getting into spoilers, I feel like there’s more to this tale. Hopefully we see some story DLC in the future. On the gameplay side, Gestalt: Steam and Cinder felt a bit easier than I expected outside of two bosses I had trouble with. Nothing major though, and the responsive controls help across the board.Gestalt: Steam and Cinder ships Steam Deck Verified, and it is perfect on Valve’s handheld. The only thing I’d like to see, if feasible, is support for 90fps. Right now, the game is capped at 60fps and 16:9. I tested this on both my Steam Decks docked and in handheld mode.Given how crowded the genre is, I know most people roll their eyes when they see another action platformer, but Gestalt: Steam and Cinder is one you cannot afford to miss. It is one of the best in the genre with its excellent gameplay, narrative, music, and slick visuals. Gestalt: Steam and Cinder is also perfect on Steam Deck from start to finish.Gestalt: Steam and Cinder Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Forges of Corruption Expansion Steam Deck ReviewThe original Boltgun was a refreshing surprise for me when it was released last year. While I’m not as into first-person shooters as deeply as some, I can certainly enjoy a good boomer shooter. Give me fast, furious action with some interest levels to explore, a satisfying selection of weapons, and challenging enemy encounters and I’m there. Boltgun had all of that, all dressed up in a Warhammer theme that if nothing else helps the world feel like it extends outside of the borders of the game. A thoroughly enjoying game to play through, and one that left me properly sated… or did it?While I thought I had had my fill of Boltgun, I was actually quite happy when Forges of Corruption was released. I guess I was still hungry. This expansion gives you five more levels of carnage to engage in, and they run on the larger side. You get two new guns to play with, one being an enhanced flamethrower and the other a rocket launcher. Sure, can’t argue with that. You also get some new enemies to try those toys out on, and you’ll need every edge you can get to deal with them. When compared to the original game’s levels, Forges of Corruption‘s stages favor more wide open spaces. This puts your mobility skills to the test, as you’ll have to keep on moving to avoid getting surrounded or cornered. If you haven’t mastered the dash already from playing the main campaign, you’ll need to get up to speed fast here. It’s an interesting change-up from the more compact design that the base game relied on so much. The enhanced flamethrower’s spread can really help you out here, and rockets always prefer open spaces.Difficulty-wise, these levels are mostly going to be a relative breeze for those who played through the first game. The last one is a real beast though, and you’re going to have to use everything you’ve learned to overcome it. Which is to say that while you can play this expansion without finishing the main game, you really should leave it for after. All-up, it takes a few hours to get through it all.Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Forges of Corruption keep the party rolling with a set of new stages that show off a slightly different design intent than those of the original. The new weapons and enemies are appreciated, and the level design makes the most of both. I do wish there was something more interesting going on visually here, and the difficulty curve isn’t as smooth as it was in the base game. Still, those looking for more Boltgun challenges to tackle will find them here.-Shaun MusgraveWarhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Forges of Corruption Expansion Steam Deck review score: 4/5News and TrailersLet’s begin the massive (and fast-paced) news section of this week with a brand-new trailer for my most anticipated game of 2025: Monster Hunter Wilds. Steam Deck Weekly: Gamescom 2024 Steam Deck News, Reviews Including Bakeru and SCHiM, New Verified Games, Discounts, and More - Journal Today Web - #GLOBAL https://www.merchant-business.com/steam-deck-weekly-gamescom-2024-steam-deck-news-reviews-including-bakeru-and-schim-new-verified-games-discounts-and-more/?feed_id=177117&_unique_id=66ca902d2258c Welcome to this week’s edition of the Steam Deck Weekly.
