Episode 11: Who’s Flyin’ Blue Lion?

Let’s Compare Voltrons

That’s actually a good question.  Blue Lion’s had more pilots than anyone else, honestly.  It started with Sven, switched to Allura, Coran and Nanny crashlanded it.  Keith piloted it twice, Lance did once.  Then Garret.  Heck, you can even count Prince Bokar and the previous unknown Arusian pilot.  Even King Alfor’s ghost, or AI if you want.  Maybe even the mice if you’re really stretching it.

Peter Cullen narrates about spider ships from the Rogue Galaxy attacking planets.  The Alliance tries to fight back, but the combined force of spider ships and shark fighters is too much.

Space Marshal Graham calls an interplanetary council to discuss this threat.

Then, only when the pterodactyl ships land does the source being doom become clear.  King Zarkon’s allied with the barbarians to finally conquer the galaxy.

Alliance ships arrive at Galaxy Garrison.  From Planet Cryo.  Azurites, Omerians, Crimzoids.  I wonder which one are Krik-people or Wolo-people.  Along with the Voltron Force, Arusians and special guest Sven.

The meeting is underway and, at the same moment, the Ceruleans are under attack.  The Alliance has already sent three whole battalions to stop this but without a concentrated unity it’s just not enough.

Also Space Marshal Graham is back-layered with a screen the same color has his clothes so he looks like a floating head a lot of this time. 

Some of the conquered peoples give evidence of Lazzon Reactors and Ultra-droids so talking a good game isn’t action.

Also, there are no Krik-people here, no Wolo-people, no Drules.  The Vehicle Team is absent, never mentioned and neither is the Explorer fleet.

And then they’re under attack.

The enemy ships completely bypass the outer space defense fleet and start attacking Garrison City outright.  The city is thrashed and the defenses are taken out.  Who could possibly be commanding the Doom fighters?

Why, it’s King Largo of the Rogue Galaxy!  He calls up the Alliance meeting to gloat on his inevitable victory.  He blows up a planet, maybe, and crushes an apple.  With those spiked shoulderpads he’s truly frightening.

This convinces the spineless diplomats to surrender but the Force and attached aren’t so easily cowed.  Keith makes a big speech about how they can totally come together and defeat the Galxy that’s 100x larger than theirs.

Theirs who?  Are Earth and Arus in the same galaxy now?

Keith goes on about Largo’s bark being worse than his bite but the ambassador guy says the bite is pretty damn nasty anyway.

But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel!  A new stingray fighter has been deployed and there’s even two of them.

They are blown up immediately by Lotor’s arriving ship.

Lotor’s ship erects a barrier over Garrison Island and the attack on the city intensifies.  What little mechanical resistance is left is destroyed but the city’s defenders aren’t giving up just yet.  The doombots cut off Alliance comms and the Force runs out to help.

The doombots force the Alliance infantry to retreat.

The Force arrive at their lions in... an underground hangar?  But everything was aboveground earlier...

Anyway, they’re ambushed by doombots but some Alliance guards cover them while they get in their lions.

The Lions thrash the doombots and fly off with resused GoLion footage into the forest and sky.  So I guess they weren’t underground...?

Lotor and Haggar make fun of Cossack as they take some dumb-looking transport down.  Yet somehow it plows through the meeting building and arrives at the meeting.  Cossack is given command and immediately screws it up by letting Sven escape.

Sven makes it to what’s definitly an underground hangar this time and destroys a doombot but gets caught by two more.  Then Black Lion claws up from... below... and the bots run away.

Cossack tells Lotor about this.

The Lions are on the surface for sure now but Lotor parades his hostages out and stops the Force in their tracks.  Lotor demands the lion keys and Allura’s hands then whips Coran when he gets lippy.  There’s some back-and-forth do we-don’t we bickering.  Somehow taking out Lotor + the Alliance guys would caused Earth to fall.

Eventually after good little good guys the Force relents.  Pidge, Lance and Hunk leave the lions using their weird side-head elevators.  Like, the lions have a chest ramp, top head hatch, side head elevator hatch, the mouths and an underhead hatch.  Yeesh.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 52

Lance: 4

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

Pidge has actually been on-color more than not for this episode.

Allura comes out next with Lotor’s creepy flirting the whole while.  He has his guards lower their weapons to appease her.

Lotor and Cossack float over on the hover-platform thing and goad Keith out.  But Keith spots Sven and Alliance infantry on the wrecked rooftop.

Keith uses his elevator board as a diving board and uses his hands to flip himself up on top of black lion.  (What a tortured sentence structure.)

Lotor compliments his gymnastics and orders Cossack to whip’em, but the ship is shot by Sven.  Sven and his guys destroy the doombots despite the angle.

I just want to note that the alliance rifles look like BB guns and it’s real stupid.

The Alliance delegation tries to leave but Cossack aims and fires — stopped by Black Lion!  Lance, Hunk and Pidge hop on in and the other four lions move.  They chase off the doombots and... Allura cheers!?

But if Allura is below (despite having an interior backdrop)... “Who’s Flyin’ Blue Lion?”

It’s Sven!  Awwwww yeah!

Also he has his pilot suit on so I guess the lions just have a spare set in them.

The Space Explorers tear through the doom fights using a lot of GoLion footage.  Like a straight two minutes of ass-kicking.

Allura in her dress and also at Castle Control calls.  She escaped Lotor, and Lotor’s running away like a coward, disabling the forcefield in the process.  She also doesn’t get territorial about Sven piloting, they’re all on the same side here!

Lotor’s fleeing but Haggar still has a Robeast up her sleeve.  It’s... a cockroach?  Sure, why not.  Time for Voltron!

This is like the only time in second season all five actually sound off (and Pidge is barely audible).

Voltron stats with lion torching its face and jumping to avoid a missile counterattack.  Then using Blast Pods to stop another.

Voltron grapples a bit then does a point-blank eye beams.  Voltron gains some flight distance then lariats (the wrestling move not the nunchuks rip) but gets shocked in the process.

FORM BLAZING SWORD!

Then Voltron and the Robeast charge at each other with an amazing two frames of animation.

Honestly, this robeast is like, entirely made of stills.

So Voltron’s head is now in the Robeast’s incisors.  It electrocutes Voltron.  Green Lion grabs a power line at Sven’s suggestion and slams it right into the Robeast’s head which somehow works.

And then it’s sworded.

Robeasts Defeated: 12

Haggar rues it as dumb luck and runs away.

Voltron’s victory inspires the Alliance forces to counterattack.

They lose some ships in the attack, and we see 4 crewmen on the one bridge we get a look at.  This is very, very minimal but whatever.

Confirmed Dead People: 37

Voltron helps tear the Spider ships to pieces and Largo retreats.  Peter Cullen narrates another Voltron victory.
