Ok imagine: two extremely touch starved people who both desperately need therapy accidentally make each other's and their own issues worse

Things start out nice, as both of them realise more and more that they have a lot in common and are able to bond over it. They understand each other in a way that they feel very few could. They grow closer out of care for and a desire to help one another. They are able to fill the gaps in each other's lives in a way, hershel being to anton almost like a second sophia and anton to hershel like a second claire

But at the core of that is where the problems lie. Both of them have had a death grip on their pasts for so long, unable to fully move on from those they lost. But neither of them are able to recognise it, both in themselves and in each other. They think they're healing, because now they have each other, but little do either of them understand how wrong they are

With Hershel, it's pretty dependent on how you characterise him, but anton at least has already been shown to be obsessive and even a bit possessive ("Sophia belongs to me! You can't have her!"). Personally I feel like hershel, with everything that he's gone through already, is the type to cling onto his relationships with others out of fear of abandonment or of something tragic happening to them and him being unable to save them. Usually, this manifests in protectiveness, but Anton's not someone who really needs protection. Hershel also adopts the traits of those around him, intentionally or not, and that combination of things I think could provide an opportunity for him to reflect Anton's possessiveness

You have to also think, Anton's been completely alone for decades. He's a recluse in an abandoned town, waiting for the return of someone who he hadn't even realised had died. Sure, perhaps he could heal from it in time, but that's bound to fuck someone up for a while at least. Bringing Hershel into the mix here, while he thinks it could be exactly what he needs, is more likely to hinder any progress he was making than boost it

What appeals to me more is how it's a mutual thing, not just one person being too clingy and hurting the other. I don't usually like that, to be honest. But when it's BOTH? Hoho, now we're talking >:]

Gonna be honest, this is where things get a little off the rails. The specific way i think about this pairing hinges less on interpretation of them as characters and more on me being a fucking weirdo lmao

To me it gets to a point where they cannot and will not let go of each other. Even if one of them eventually figures out that there are some inherent issues with their relationship, they don't want to leave. Not only are they both terrified of losing someone they love yet again, but they both kinda feel like they own each other in a way. They're so tied to each other now that nothing less than death itself can pry them apart, like embers merging and growing into a bigger and bigger flame

Idk. The inherent eroticism of mutual ownership.........
