Film ‘Laxmii’ Review and Rating

Every now and then, it seems, Akshay Kumar cannot resist giving in to the urge to churn out boring humour. The last time he did it was in Diwali last year, with Housefull 4. He is back this Diwali with a film that would make Housefull 4 seem like a classic.

The problem with Laxmii is not that it is mindless. The problem is the film is just not funny enough, despite playing to the gallery. Director Raghava Lawrence, who makes his Bollywood debut with this film, collaborates with Farhad Samji (incidentally, the man who helmed Housefull 4) in a bid to recreate his 2011 Tamil hit Muni 2: Kanchana. What may have seemed funny nine years ago clearly fails to make the cut today.

Uh, yes — there’s the social message part. Laxmii tries being a satire of sorts against obsolete customs and rituals, but the effort defeats itself owing to the sheer plasticity of the narrative. The film also tries making the politically correct noises about the transgender community, as well as Hindu-Muslim harmony.

The fans of one of the most awaited films, Brahmastra, were left astonished sometime back. The logo teaser video which was unveiled by the makers of the film – Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Fox Star Studios – mysteriously got deleted from YouTube, with no explanation given. The film has already taken more than 2-3 years to be made and with this development, the fans were left aghast. Soon, their anger grew louder on social media as they demanded to know what’s going on with this film.

However, there’s no need to panic. An industry expert has revealed, “As we all know, Fox Star Studios is shutting down in India. It released all its pending films like Dil Bechara, Lootcase, Sadak 2 and Laxmii this year online, on Disney+ Hotstar. Brahmastra happens to be the last film in the line-up of Fox Star Studios. Since Disney has taken over Fox, it has decided to market Brahmastra as a Disney movie and not as a Fox Star Studios film.”

The expert adds, “The Disney team feels Brahmastra can make for an ideal family entertainer, which is what Disney movies are known for. Besides having a terrific star cast comprising Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan, it also has a mythological touch and is a VFX-heavy film. All these factors further enhance the appeal of Ayan Mukerji’s directorial. Hence, they pulled down the teaser from YouTube as it was uploaded by Fox Star Studios’ official YouTube page. Closer to the film’s release, they’d probably re-upload the same promo or may unveil a new teaser. And this time, Disney's logo will be visible in the video and in all forthcoming publicity materials.”

Brahmastra, however, won’t be the first film to release under the Disney banner. In the past, Disney had acquired the erstwhile UTV Motion Pictures. 5 of their films – the animated mythological film Arjun: The Warrior Prince (2012), Sonam Kapoor-Fawad Khan starrer romcom Khoobsurat (2014), Varun Dhawan-Shraddha Kapoor’s dance flick ABCD – Any Body Can Dance – 2 (2015), Aamir Khan’s wrestling drama Dangal (2016) and Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer Jagga Jasoos (2017) – were released with the Disney branding as all of them were clean family entertainers. Even prior to these films, Disney was associated with Habib Faisal’s directorial debut Do Dooni Chaar (2010), Yash Raj Films’ animated venture Roadside Romeo (2008), Darsheel Safary’s superhero flick Zokkomon (2011) and Siddharth-Shruti Haasan Tamil fantasy flick Anaganaga O Dheerudu (2011).

A few weeks back, Bollywood Hungama had reported that Disney+ Hotstar was eyeing Brahmastra for an exclusive digital release. However, as per a source, Karan declined the offer as he believes that the VFX heavy, grand film would be best enjoyed in cinemas.

Akshay Kumar proved in the movie 'Iaxmii'  that he is skilled and extraordinary in all the characters. It was also a much awaited picture of the actor's own acting life. Although the original name of the film was 'Iaxmii Bomb', the name of the movie was changed to 'Iaxmii' due to objections to the name. Full of ghosts and humor, this film will lift the audience from their seats laughing. However, the spice in this film was very low and it could not be a Diwali blast in any way.

However, the actors and actresses of the film did not spare any effort to show their acting skills. Akshay Kumar's characters in the film are Asif / Ailakshmi, Kiara Advani or Rashmi, Sharad Kelkar's real Lakshmi in this film and others are Rajesh Sharma, Ayesha Raja Mishra and Manu Rishi Chadda.

The main problem with Laxmii's film is that it is made irrationally. The film manages to entertain as well as inform. Acting 

Although the film was not a success, every actor, including Akshay Kumar, had a suitable character. No one showed extra performance. There is nothing new to say about Akshay Kumar's performance. He has given his share in this film like other films. Kiarao has also competed with Akshay. The rest of the actors have portrayed their characters properly on the screen.

Failed director

Laxmii could not forget the way the Tamil film Kanchana was a hit. Even after being a ghost-comedy film, viewers will not be able to associate themselves with this film in that way. Director Lawrence has failed to properly address these two important issues of transformational and communal society. Screenplay and dialogue are also very weak. Neither Asif nor Laxmii could make the audience laugh like that.
