Move It!

Life can truly change in the blink of an eye.  Or at least in what seems like the blink of an eye.

One year ago this week I was moving into a new two-bedroom apartment in my hometown of Rochester, NY.  My plan was to use the extra room as an office/podcast studio and live out my years as an aging man with two cats, recording shows that nobody would listen to.  

Then I took a booking on the Carnival Paradise cruise ship and that plan went down the drain.  

Fate apparently had a different blueprint for how the rest of my life would go because waiting for me on that ship was my future wife, Christina and after a whirlwind 12 months, I proposed, she said yes and just me suddenly became just us.

Which brings me to the subject matter of today’s blog.

Because I’m now engaged to a woman who doesn’t live where I do, I once again find myself surrounded by the clutter of a move about to be in progress, this time to the sun-kissed city of Tampa, FL.  The Sunshine State will be the fourth locale that I call home and hopefully the last as I don’t think I’ve got another move in me.  Last year the distance between my old place and my new place was a mere 2.5 miles and it drove me bananas making that short move.  This year I’m looking at roughly 1,300 miles and I’ll be bringing a shitload more, plus driving the truck.  By my calculations, life won’t be “normal” again until sometime in 2019.

As much as I may sound like I’m complaining I’m actually really excited about what my future holds.  I’ve spent far too long as a solo act and I’m ready for something new.  And what I’m headed for will be just that plus some.  In addition to my bride-to-be, Christina I’ll also be gaining two step-kids, Logan and Madison, two dogs, Bailey and Max, one parrot named Lucy and Myrtle the turtle.  How about that, huh?  On top of that, I’ll be becoming a home-owner of sorts.  The house is really my sweet baby’s but I’ll get to do things like mow the lawn and pick-up dog shit (hopefully not in that order), which I believe entitles me to at least 1% of the pie, right?

Speaking of 1%, does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can claim more than just the top of a dresser, 6 hangers in her closet and a suction-cup shelf in the shower?

Just Keep Swimming

Most of the time I’m upbeat, I see the good in things and people, and I try to see the lighter side of life.

Today isn’t one of those days. I rolled out of bed in a foul mood, more depressed than angry. I started to watch the news but had to turn it off after watching a story about a police officer being shot. The emotions of such an event simply overcame me. 

It is a beautiful day outside, so I headed out to mow the lawn and plant a tree. Usually the fresh air makes me feel better. No such luck. 

Ironically I had a great time last night going to the Rochester International Jazz festival. It is a week long event that really makes it worthwhile living in a crazy place like NY. Food, fun, music, people. It was all there, and I soaked up every minute of it. 

But that was last night. 

I don’t know what changed. Maybe I didn’t sleep well? Maybe I need to drink more water? Who knows. 

This happens from time to time. I’ve learned that sometimes the day wasn’t really meant for me, and it’s best to just ride it out and to do my best to put one foot in front of the other. Or as Dorie in Finding Nemo put it, “just keep swimming”.

Being human is a complicated game (for me at least). I know some folks who don’t seem to have a care in the world. I envy them!! (Although I suspect they have cares, they just don’t let us know.)

Oddly enough  my mood has led me to be fairly productive already today, so I guess that’s not a bad thing. 

But I still wish there were day’s when I could detach my head or my heart, put it on a shelf and give it a rest.
