Scott Damron Apply These Tips When Gardening And Grow
Scott Damron Contrary to popular belief, growing an organic garden doesn't mean you're one step away from joining a commune or living off the land. It just means you want healthier food, bereft of the harsh chemicals that are used by mass-producing farms. Here are some tips to ensure that your garden will always grow.
If you would like to create an eye-catching fall garden with a lot of height and contrasting colors, try planting spiky plants like the New Zealand flax, the yucca or tall ornamental grasses. Add drama with texture and color by adding chartreuse plants like the Golden Spirit smoke bush or the Tiger Eyes sumac. To contrast the chartreuse color, plant purple plants alongside the chartreuse plants like the Black Lace elderberry or Loropetalum.
Scott Damron Professional tips provider. Check for weeds often in your garden as they will leech nutrients from the soil. Weeds can grow at a high rate of speed and overwhelm the resources available to your plants. Take the time to check for weeds at least twice a week to catch them while they are new shoots.
Growing compost piles are a great alternative to buying traditional fertilizer. Compost piles are composed of organic material that slowly deteriorates making a nutrient-rich soil. It presents both a great way of ridding yourself of banana peels and other organic compounds, while providing your plants with a nitrogen rich mixture that will promote increased growth.
When gardening, beware of stink bugs and other insects, particularly in the autumn. Stink bugs like to reside in tomatoes, beans, and pepper plants, as well as many fruits. They can do a lot of damage if they are not controlled.
Plant a new and different edible each week. Eating tomatoes or corn every day can get old real quick, but if a variety is planted, this problem will never happen. The garden can offer a wide variety of different edible plants and if they come to maturity at the same time the variety will make the garden more enjoyable and more fun.
Don't plant a garden without planning it. It will be a while before things start to sprout and visually remind you of what was planted where, so a written record can be helpful. You are also less likely to lose smaller members of the larger garden in the overall mix.
Think about asking friends or family for cuttings from their existing plants. Many plants will grow from cuttings so that you do not have to purchase a whole plant yourself. It takes only minutes to learn online which part of the plant you should cut off to replant, and using cuttings can save you hundreds of dollars in landscaping and gardening costs.
To keep your lawn looking great when there's a water shortage, set the blades of your lawnmower to their highest height. Doing this will allow your grass to go dormant, keeping it looking fresh with minimal water. Be sure to change your blades back to their normal setting when you're able to water your grass normally.
Make your own compost ahead of time rather than purchasing it. Adding compost to your garden gives your plants a needed boost to grow successfully. Begin saving your grass cuttings, raked up leaves, egg shells, and skin from fruits and vegetables in a sturdy bin 6 months prior to your gardening season. Your compost will then be ready to mix in with your dirt on planting day.
To make nutrient fertilizer from stuff you have around the house, look at what you have for breakfast. Both old coffee grounds and tea bags make an excellent fertilizer, especially when it comes to plants that love acid. Eggshells add alkaline to your soil, and bananas are the best source of the potassium that roses thrive on.
Scott Damron Expert tips provider. If you want the best tasting vegetables, learn about the optimum time to harvest them. Each kind of vegetable should be picked at a specific point for maximum flavor. For instance, zucchini and baby peas have the best taste when you pick them early. However, tomatoes should be as ripe as they can be when pulled from the vine to ensure the best taste. So, be aware of the best harvest time to pick your veggies.
Remember your climate and don't plant things that won't grow in your area. You don't want to waste time and space by planting seeds that will not do well. Ask other gardeners you know what they are successful with growing. Most gardeners are willing to share any advice they have.
Your plants need to be fed properly as soon as they start sprouting leaves. If you did not use compost in your soil, you have to fertilize your plants. You can mix water with a liquid fish or sea weed solution and spray it on your plants, or add this mix to the water in which your trays and pots are bathing.
Keep your soil healthy. One of the best ways to deter pests from eating up your hard work in your organic garden is to make sure your soil is good. If your growing medium becomes imbalanced, it will become an attractive place for all kinds of unwanted visitors. Check pH and moisture levels often.
Scott Damron Qualified tips provider. If you are serious about organic gardening, you must start with organic seed. Organic seed comes from fruits and vegetables that have not been treated by any chemicals, nor can they be from fruits or vegetables that have been genetically modified in any way. Organic seed can be more expensive than non-organic, however, it is an investment you will only need to make once for most standard garden plants, since you harvest your own produce and then save the seeds for your next planting.
Yes, there is a stigma that comes with the word "organic," but that's because most people fail to realize that the word organic, basically means natural. In fact, growing organic is as natural as you can possibly get. So make sure to use these gardening tips when you're ready to grow organic food.Scott Damron Top service provider.

Fire-Retardant and Fire-Resistant Plantings
Normally the sound of weed-whackers disrupts the tranquility of living the soulful country life, but this year, I am grateful to hear their constant buzzing. With a summer of historical dryness in front of us bringing a looming fire danger, cutting the grasses on hillsides, paths, and in backyards is imperative. I’ve been working on my property since early February weeding, cutting, pruning, mulching, repairing, and planting in preparation for a hot, dangerous year. You are encouraged to walk through your landscape and make sure you are also ready for whatever may transpire. We want to keep our community picturesque as well as safe. We all play a part in protecting our precious land and lives.
My articles on creating an Emergency Go-Bag (https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1507/Packing-an-emergency-Go-Bag.html) and Wildfire Protection through Landscaping
(https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1507/Digging-Deep-with-Goddess-Gardener-Cynthia-Brian-Wildfire-protection-through-landscaping.html) elicited numerous emails and comments. The number one request was to supply a list of plants that would be fire-retardant and fire-resistant.
When planning a new garden or adding plants to an existing landscape, it is essential to be reminded that no plant is fire-proof. Everything can and will burn if the temperature is hot enough. Also, even if a plant tag indicates that it is fire-resistant, it must be properly maintained, pruned, irrigated, spaced, and positioned in the correct locations to thrive. Plants that have been infested with pests, are too old, or are stressed will be more flammable. Plants that are not nurtured could create a problem for other vegetation. Inspect your botanicals carefully.
GARDEN ZONES
ZONE 1: DEFENSIBLE ZONE
Plants within 30 feet of a structure need to be considered for fire-retardance. This is Zone 1, the defensible space of your garden which will be able to withstand extreme heat and flying embers. Plants need to be watered thoroughly, trees are preferably deciduous, and the leaves of plants will be moist, fleshy, and broad.
Groundcovers for this area include:
Lawn grasses
Ajuga
Isotoma
Gazania
Alyssum
Moss
Nasturtium
Vinca
Dwarf Plumbago
Chamomile
Zone 1 Perennials include:
Acanthus

Ornamental Pear
Pepper Tree
ZONE 2: FUEL BREAK
From 31 feet to 70 feet from a structure, and even further up on slopes, is the greenbelt area which is designed to halt the fire. Plants in this area are the most fire-retardant with low fuels and high moisture content. These plantings can withstand neglect, freezes, droughts, and even insect infestations and still be fire-retardant. Ground covers don’t grow over 18 inches. Trees and shrubs have space between them. In general, although succulents and cactus may not survive a fire, they are the best at retarding one.
Zone 2 Groundcovers include:
Succulents
Ice plant
Yarrow
Artemisia
Morning glory
Coreopsis
Santa Barbara Daisy
Wild strawberry
Gazania
Primrose
Osteospermum
Clover
Verbena
Zone 2 Perennials include:

GENERAL FIRE-RESISTANT PLANTS
Although no plant is 100% fire-proof, these plants are less likely to burn. Several are already listed for Zones 1 and 2.

Black Oak
Hawthorne
Birch
Aspen
Poplar
Maple
Manzanita (prune without deadwood)
Walnut
California Bay Laurel
California Pepper
Remember that deciduous plants are less flammable than evergreen. Gray and silver plants have a high mineral and ash content which makes them more fire-resistant. Vegetation with needles or fine, thin leaves is flammable. The more stored moisture a plant has, the more it can withstand a fire. Use less-flammable types of mulch, such as gravel or decorative rock, or a combination of wood bark mulch and decorative rock to dress your garden, retain moisture, and deter weed growth.
To burn, fires need fuel. By removing debris, planting and maintaining a fire-retardant and fire-resistant landscape, cutting down dead trees, thinning dried branches, spacing, pruning, watering, and keeping trees away from roofs, you will dimmish the chance of ignition, lower fire intensity, and reduce the spread of a blaze. Your home will have a better chance of surviving a wildfire.
Best of all, you can still create a gorgeous oasis where you can entertain, relax, and socialize.
Firewise volunteers are available to offer advice in neighborhoods. The Orinda Firewise Council supports and educates the public about wildfire resilience. They are seeking landscapers and nurseries to assist with communicating ways in which homeowners can become more wildfire safe by making their property more fire-resistant. To work together with them to empower and beautify the community, go to https://www.orindafirewisecouncil.org/contact-us
Website: https://www.orindafirewisecouncil.org
You don’t want fires to crawl fueled by unkempt low-lying vegetation, high grasses, or mounds of leaves.  Get out the weed whackers and go to work.  Be fire safe and enjoy a wonderful summer.
Happy Gardening. Happy Growing. Congratulations to the graduates and Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads.

Achillea millefolium
Achillea millefolium
"Yarrow" redirects here. For other uses, see Yarrow (disambiguation). Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow /ˈjæroʊ/ or common yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America. It has been introduced as a feed for live stock in places like New Zealand and Australia. However, it is a weed in those places and sometimes also in its native regions. In New Mexico and southern Colorado, it is called plumajillo (Spanish for 'little feather') from its leaf shape and texture. In antiquity, yarrow was known as herbal militaris, for its use in stanching the flow of blood from wounds. Other common names for this species include gordaldo, nosebleed plant, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, thousand-leaf, and thousand-seal. Description
Yarrow leaves
Pollination A. millefolium is an erect, herbaceous, perennial plant that produces one to several stems 0.2–1 m (0.66–3.28 ft) in height, and has a spreading rhizomatous growth form. Leaves are evenly distributed along the stem, with the leaves near the middle and bottom of the stem being the largest. The leaves have varying degrees of hairiness (pubescence). The leaves are 5–20 cm (2.0–7.9 in) long, bipinnate or tripinnate, almost feathery, and arranged spirally on the stems. The leaves are cauline, and more or less clasping. The inflorescence has 4 to 9 phyllaries and contains ray and disk flowers which are white to pink. The generally 3 to 8 ray flowers are ovate to round. Disk flowers range from 15 to 40. The inflorescence is produced in a flat-topped capitulum cluster and the inflorescences are visited by many insects, featuring a generalized pollination system. The small achene-like fruits are called cypsela. The plant has a strong, sweet scent, similar to that of chrysanthemums. Distribution Yarrow grows from sea level to 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) in elevation. The plant commonly flowers from May through June. Common yarrow is frequently found in the mildly disturbed soil of grasslands and open forests. Active growth occurs in the spring. The plant is native to Eurasia and is found widely from the UK to China. In North America, both native and introduced genotypes, and both diploid and polyploid plants are found. It is found in every habitat throughout California except the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. Common yarrow produces an average yield of 43,000 plants per acre, with a total dry weight of 10,500 lbs. The plant is found in Australia as an introduction. Clusters of 15 to 40 tiny disk flowers surrounded by three to eight white to pink ray flowers are, in turn, arranged in a flat-topped inflorescence (Wenatchee Mountains, Washington).

Achillea millefolium 'Paprika' cultivar
Achillea millefolium cultivar Achillea millefolium is cultivated as an ornamental plant by many plant nurseries. It is planted in gardens and natural landscaping settings of diverse climates and styles. They include native plant, drought-tolerant, and wildlife gardens. The plant is a frequent component of butterfly gardens. The plant prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but can be grown in less ideal conditions. For propagation, seeds require light for germination, so optimal germination occurs when planted no deeper than one-quarter inch (6 mm). Seeds also require a germination temperature of 18–24 °C (64–75 °F). It has a relatively short life in some situations, but may be prolonged by division in the spring every other year, and planting 12 to 18 in (30–46 cm) apart. It can become invasive. The species use in traditional gardens has generally been superseded by cultivars with specific 'improved' qualities. Some are used as drought tolerant lawn replacements, with periodic mowing. The many different ornamental cultivars include: 'Paprika', 'Cerise Queen', 'Red Beauty', 'Red Velvet', 'Saucy Seduction', 'Strawberry Seduction' (red), 'Island Pink' (pink), and 'Calistoga' (white), and 'Sonoma Coast' (white). Several, including 'Kelwayi', and 'Lansdorferglut' (both pink) have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The many hybrids of this species designated Achillea x taygetea are useful garden subjects, including: 'Appleblossom', 'Fanal', 'Hoffnung', and 'Moonshine'. Yarrow is considered an especially useful companion plant, repelling some pest insects while attracting good, predatory ones. It attracts predatory wasps, which drink the nectar and then use insect pests as food for their larvae. Similarly, it attracts ladybirds and hoverflies. A. millefolium can be planted to combat soil erosion due to the plant's resistance to drought. Before the arrival of monocultures of ryegrass, both grass leys and permanent pasture always contained A. millefolium at a rate of about 0.3 kg/ha. At least one of the reasons for its inclusion in grass mixtures was its deep roots, with leaves rich in minerals. Thus its inclusion helped to prevent mineral deficiencies in the ruminants to which it was fed. It was introduced into New Zealand as a drought-tolerant pasture. It is very prevalent. Yarrow has also been used as a food or in teas, and was very popular as a vegetable in the 17th century. The younger leaves are said to be a pleasant leaf vegetable when cooked like spinach, or in a soup. Yarrow is sweet with a slight bitter taste. 8 Plants to Add Color to Your Autumn Landscaping
It’s easy to fill the spring and summer with bright colors from the flower-bearing plants that are available. Having a colorful fall landscape takes a bit more effort, but if you do your homework and select plants carefully, you can surround your home with eye-catching color from a variety of flowers, seed pods, or berries. Here are a few plants that you can depend on to punch up that autumn landscape.
  Sasanqua Camellia
Source: coniferconifer (CC BY 2.0)
Sasanqua camellia is the quiet sister overshadowed by the more popular sister plant–Camellia. Always the afterthought—until you notice that the branches of the sasanqua have an unassuming grace, a delicacy, compared to the dense, stiff common camellia. The sasanqua blooms in the summer, and those flowers fade away as the frost comes.
As they die, we await the wonder of the flowers that bloom through autumn, sometimes into winter. Flowers may be cherry red, rose, shell pink, or white. The flowers appear for a short time, then the petals rain onto the ground as new flowers bloom. The carpet of petals surrounding the flower-laden shrub is an amazing example of nature’s beauty.
  Red Clusterberry
Source: judy_and_ed (CC BY-NC 2.0)
The red cluster-berry is an evergreen with elliptical leaves, dark green on the top side and cream-colored underneath. Clusters of small white or pale-pink flowers, to the delight of bees, line up along the graceful branches at random in a free-flowing design in the spring. Bright red fruit, attractive to both humans and birds, contrasts beautifully with the leaves in the autumn and can last well into winter. Extremely versatile, it can be used as a groundcover or trained to grow flat against a wall or as a hedge.
  Brandywine™ Viburnum nudum
Source: Plant Image Library (CC BY-SA 2.0)
White flowers in the spring become clusters of vivid pink and blueberries in the autumn when the glossy foliage turns to a dark maroon-red. The plant can be quite spectacular when it reaches six feet high. If you need to prune, do it soon after flowering; however, keep in mind that the more flower clusters, the more berries you’ll enjoy during autumn.
  Virginia Creeper
Source: keith ellwood (CC BY 2.0)
The foliage of Virginia Creeper is a deep, rich green through the summer and turns fire-engine red in the autumn, becoming a stunning accent to your landscape. The red is set off by a profusion of blueberries. The plant “creeps” quickly in shade or partial shade, creating a fence of foliage and berries before you know it.
  Beautyberry
Source: Beautyberry (CC BY-ND 2.0)
The beautyberry produces a massive amount of purple berries in autumn after the lavender-pink lilac-like flowers from the summer have faded away. Besides adding an abundance of color to your autumn landscape, the berries attract birds, which give you more color. But here’s the thing: The birds apparently only eat them when they are desperate. The beautyberries remain on the bush long after the birds have feasted on other kinds of berries. The foliage adds more color with its deep green tinged with purple. You can plant the beautyberry under a tall shade tree or as a “relaxed” type of hedge along the perimeter of your yard.
  Russian Sage
Source: Roger Miller (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)
Russian sage, that is actually a native of Iran and India, infuses your landscape with dramatic violet-blue in the crystal-clear light of autumn. The bee-friendly flowers are set into aromatic leaves on a silver-white frame of branches. It is the only plant that exhibits a white skeleton of delicate branches. When Russian sage is planted in a group, the silhouette seems to glow in the subtler light of winter.
  Calendulas
Source: Fluffymuppet (CC BY-NC 2.0)
Also known as pot marigold, the shades of burnt yellow and orange help make the neutral fall foliage pop. The flowers provide color that blooms from autumn into the spring, particularly in warm southern winters. Calendulas thrive in full sun but will be fine with partial shade.
  Ornamental Grasses
Ornamental grasses add color, texture, and movement to your landscape all year long, and they do that with little effort from you. Once established, water them during a drought, maybe cut them back in the spring. Following are some of the most popular grasses used for adding color to an autumn landscape and often throughout the winter.
Pink Muhly Grass – Not as tall as most grasses, it usually reaches about three feet. Adds a breathtaking color that is mesmerizing as it sways in the breeze.
Japanese Blood Grass – A slow-growing grass that is red all year and most intense hue of red in the autumn.
New Zealand Flax – Not technically a grass, but is often used and acts as one. The beauty lies in the array of colors with bronze and purple becoming most prominent in the autumn.

New Zealand’s green environment
An initial and lasting impression from my visit to New Zealand is the pleasant green environment to be found in towns and suburbs as well as in the countryside.
Tumblr media
The Airporter bus from Auckland airport to Onehunga starts by winding through landscaped freight and business parks with vegetation and grass verges, a contrast from the concrete and brick surroundings of London’s Heathrow airport where my journey had started two days earlier, on 16 March, 2017.
Tumblr media
The next bus to Auckland dropped me at the top of Queen Street and to reach Greys Avenue, I took the path and steps through the inclines of Myers Park.

With its grass lawns and a variety of trees this pleasant urban green space was uncrowded on a Saturday afternoon.
On the next day (Sunday), my walking tour led to Auckland Domain via Grafton Bridge after an unintended loop along Karangahape Road, Newton Road and Upper Queen Street.
Tumblr media
Where Newton Road crosses over the motorway I took a photo (above) showing the island of green trees and bush underneath the bridge.
Tumblr media
A drinking station, like the one on Upper Queen Street, is a useful facility, allowing water bottles to be refilled, on a hot day. The photo also shows trees providing shade on the pavement of Ian McKinnon Drive beyond.
Tumblr media
Grafton Bridge also crosses a motorway at a high level and again islands of green trees and bush relieve the visual impact of the road.
Tumblr media
A wide expanse of green for lawns and playing fields greet the visitor entering Auckland Domain from Park Road.
Tumblr media
I headed for the Domain Wintergardens, with tropical and temperate glasshouses as well as ornamental ponds with water lilies.
Tumblr media
Leading from the gardens is the Fernz Fernery which is also free to visit.
Tumblr media
The Domain is also home to the Auckland Museum but the weather was too good to visit on this occasion. The lawns below the museum provide fine views and one couple were having a picnic there with no competition for their perfect shady spot!
Tumblr media
The City Campus of the University of Auckland includes lawns and trees. On a sloping site, it was pleasant to be able to wander around and see how nature can soften the impact of the various buildings.
Tumblr media
The School of Music on Symonds Street is separated from the road by trees that provide some shade. The building was designed by Hill Manning Mitchell Architects in 1986. The building was awarded the Enduring Architecture Award 2013.
Work in progress - to be continued
