How to Choose the Right Lawn Repairs Company in Blanchard: A Complete Guide
Tumblr media
Lawn repairs Blanchard may be necessary to maintain the health and appearance of your lawn. Some common reasons for lawn repairs include bare or thin areas, weed infestations, disease, pest damage, or soil compaction. Here are some tips for repairing your lawn:
Identify the problem: Before you can begin to repair your lawn, you need to identify the problem. If you have bare or thin areas, you may need to reseed or sod the area. If you have weed infestations, you may need to use a herbicide to kill the weeds. If you have disease or pest damage, you may need to treat the affected areas.
Aerate the soil: If your lawn is compacted, it may be difficult for new grass to grow. Aeration involves using a machine to create small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil.
Reseed or sod the area: If you have bare or thin areas, you may need to reseed or sod the area. Reseeding involves spreading grass seed over the area and then watering it regularly until the grass has established itself. Sodding involves laying down rolls of pre-grown grass over the area.
Fertilize: To encourage healthy growth, you may need to fertilize your lawn. Look for a fertilizer that is appropriate for your soil type and grass species.
Water regularly: Regular watering is essential for the growth and health of your lawn. Water deeply and infrequently, rather than shallowly and frequently.
Maintain your lawn: Once you have repaired your lawn, it is important to maintain it. This involves regular mowing, fertilizing, and watering. Additionally, avoid overuse or heavy traffic on your lawn to prevent damage.

Things to Know About Fertilization and Mowing
Things to Know About Lawn Fertilization and Mowing
Lawn fertilization and mowing are important tasks that go hand-in-hand in maintaining a healthy and attractive lawn. By understanding the proper techniques and timing for these tasks, you can ensure that your lawn stays lush and green throughout the growing season. Here are a few things to know about lawn fertilization and mowing:
Fertilization
Fertilization is the process of adding nutrients to the soil to promote the growth and health of your lawn. The most common types of fertilizer are composed of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The right fertilizer will vary based on the type of grass you have.
It is generally recommended to fertilize a lawn once in early spring and once in the fall, but in some cases, it may need it more frequently. Over-fertilizing can lead to a lawn that is overly lush and susceptible to disease and pests. Consult a professional or take a soil test prior to applying fertilizers to know the specific needs of your lawn.
It's also important to note that while fertilization can provide essential nutrients to the lawn, healthy soil is also crucial, so it's best to take care of your soil health and fertility.
Mowing
Mowing is an essential task that helps to keep your lawn healthy and looking its best. The ideal mowing height varies depending on the type of grass you have. For example, cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue should be mowed at the height of 2.5 to 3 inches, while warm-season grasses such as Bermuda and Zoysia should be mowed at the height of 1 to 2 inches.
Mowing frequency depends on the rate of growth of your lawn, which can be affected by factors such as weather, temperature, and water availability. In general, you should mow your lawn often enough that you are only cutting off the top third of the grass blades.
Regular mowing also helps to control weeds by cutting off their tops and preventing them from establishing themselves in the lawn.
Lastly, mower blades should be sharp to ensure a clean cut and avoid damage to the grass. Dull blades can lead to tearing and ragged edges, which can leave the grass vulnerable to disease.
In conclusion, fertilization and mowing are essential tasks that go hand in hand in maintaining a healthy and attractive lawn. Proper timing, techniques, and understanding of your lawn's specific needs will help ensure that your lawn stays lush and green throughout the growing season. Always keep in mind to test your soil, consult a professional and use appropriate techniques and tools to achieve optimal results and prevent further damage.

Lemon Girl
So I thought about this when listening to Lemon boy by cavetown I think it's pretty good I don't know though
Percy Jackson x Reader
⋆⁺。˚⋆˙‧₊☽ ◯ ☾₊‧˙⋆˚。⁺⋆
There once was a bitter sweet man and they called him lemon boy
It was never easy being the daughter of Nyx people never seemed to want to be near me because my mother was one of the most feared goddesses she was even feared by Zeus himself.
So I kept to myself in the garden I planted away from everyone in my own bitterness. Until he came around he was like a dam weed he just wouldn't go away no matter how much I pushed him to go away.
"I'm Percy. Percy Jackson son of Poseidon"
"(Y/N) daughter of Nyx please go away you're stepping on my carrots"
He was growing in my garden and I pulled him out by his hair like a weed and like weeds do he only came and grew back again
It seemed no matter how long or hard I pushed and pushed he was always there waving to me or by my side trying to speak to me
"What are those?"
"They're snapdragons"
"And what are those"
"Fly traps"
So I figured this time I might as well let him be
After awhile I got used to him being around so much it seemed like he just became a part of my routine like clockwork he was there every day after his practices so I thought 'might as well put him to work'
"Wait so how do I do this?"
I rolled my eyes "If they've fully blossomed cut them and take out the thorns and put them in the bucket sound simple?"
"okay got it!"
He never seemed to complain always happy to be there
Lemon boy and me started to get along together I helped him plant his seeds and we mowed the lawn in bad weather
"So you're just going to dig a small holes about four inches deep and plant your seeds and if we take care of it good enough you'll have a watermelon patch" I looked over to him and smiled
He smiled back and nodded and got to work. He never seemed to care about all the dirt and bugs he'd had to encounter
But soon his bittersweet started to rub off on me
I looked over and saw Clarisse picking on Percy I ran over
"HEY!" They looked over to me Clarisse was scared as shit "Why don't you go shove your spear up your ass or something Clarisse!" I grabbed Percy and pushed him away as we walked off
"Thanks" I looked to him and rolled my eyes
"Yeah well I wasn't doing it for you I was doing it because she almost pushed you into my lilies" I blushed and ran off
"GET TO WORK SEAWEED BRAIN!"
I found out that my friends are more of the savory type and they weren't too keen on compromising with a nice lemon pie
"why are you hanging out with her?!"
I looked over and saw Percy talking to Annabeth they looked to me and I looked away
"She's nice I actually really like hanging out with her"
"She's bad news Percy her mom is the goddess of night of darkness!"
I sighed and walked further away I knew this day would come he'd leave soon enough
"Hey I picked the oranges you asked for"
I looked over and he was smiling at me...maybe he wasn't going to leave
But what if I run out of fertilizer?
"Idiot! Be careful!"
I grabbed onto Percy's hand pressing a towel against it he cut himself on a knife cutting off a piece of orange for himself
"Aw does the big bad bitter (Y/n) care about me?"
I rolled my eyes and applied more pressure than necessary on his wound and walked away
"As if I'd care about you seaweed brain"
What if the clouds run out of rain?
"You're going on a quest?"
"Yeah it shouldn't take long we're just going to track down a demigod who needs help"
I looked at him I was concerned what if Percy didn't come back I'd be all alone again I'd loose the only friend I've had in my fifteen years of being here
"Hey don't worry I'll be okay I have Annabeth and Grover to help me"
He smiled and I nodded he hugged me I was so surprised
"take care of my watermelon patch"
I rolled my eyes and pat his back and sighed
"You better come back or else I'll rip your your watermelon patch and plant a lemon tree"
He laughed oh gods please let him come back home safely
What if Lemon boy won't grow no longer?
It's been a month and Percy hasn't come back I've been more worried than I ever have been as I continued to cut the roses I heard footsteps
"(Y/N) here Chiron asked me to deliver this to you"
I turned around and saw a child of Hermes hand me a letter sealed with a brown envelope I smiled up at them they looked stunned
"Thank you"
I got up and walked away
"Did she just tell you thank you?!"
"Oh my gods"
"Percy definitely changed her"
I rolled my eyes and walked into my cabin and looked at the letter reading the name
"Percy"
What if beaches dry of sugar cane?
Run.
That was the only thing on my mind as I ran in the rain my clothing soaked to the max I could care less about that I had only one thing on my mind
"PERCY!"
I ran toward the med cabin
The whales start to beach themselves
People were trying to push me back keeping me from going inside
"STOP! STOP I HAVE TO SEE HIM!"
I pushed them all back and ran into Chiron we just stood silent in front of each other it was like I was communicating with him 'please I have to see him'
He moved aside
Tortoise shells tear away from their spines
I walked up to his bed slowly Grover and Annabeth by his sides looked to me
"We're sorry (Y/n) we tried to stop him but he was trying to protect the new demigod and..and he got hurt"
It happens all the time, it happens all the time
I don't even know who was talking to me I was too busy staring at Percy his body battered and bruised a large gash on his stomach that was bandaged
They up to me patting me on the shoulder and walked away to leave me alone with him I walked up to his side and fell to my knees hugging his waist crying into it
"Percy..Percy you stupid idiot you said you'd be safe"
Lemon Boy and I, we're gonna live forever
I woke up to the sound of Percy taking a deep breath I moved away from him and he looked at me confused
"(Y/N)?"
I wasted no time in hugging him I was crying even harder than last night
"Percy! Percy you idiot I told you to be safe! What the hell!?"
He chuckled and hugged me back tightly he moved me back a bit to look me in the eyes
"I thought you didn't care about me?"
I smiled and shook my head
Like Snufkin and Little My, we'll get around wherever
Me and Percy were walking through camp flowers in hand handing them out to people my roses grew beautifully this season all thanks to Percy
"Imagine that Percy Jackson and (Y/n) (L/n)?"
"She seems a lot less bitter with him around"
"I like it"
I smiled and walked closer to Percy bumping my shoulder with his
"where to next seaweed brain?"
Lemon Boy and I, we're gonna live forever
Me and Percy were running around past curfew laughing hand in hand
"Percy where are we going?!"
"You'll see"
He looked back at me for a moment before looking forward again running faster I laughed louder
"Percy hold on!"
Like Snufkin and Little My, we'll get around wherever
We stopped at my garden under my lemon tree there was a nice picnic set out
"Percy? is this-"
"For us? Yes yes it is"
He dragged me to the blanket and sat me down handing me a plate
"Lemon pie?"
"I know it's your favorite"
I blushed and looked away embarrassed I looked up to sky the stars and moon looked beautiful
"They're not as beautiful as you"
I probably looked like a cherry now jeez this boy is going to kill me
It's actually pretty easy being nice to a bitter boy like him
Me and Percy were working in the garden when a few other people came around
"Hey can we help you (Y/n)?"
"Yeah I want to help too!"
"Can you teach me how to care for my plants they're starting to die"
I was getting overwhelmed by all the talk happening that's when Percy stepped in
"Hey back off my girlfriend will you one at a time"
'Girlfriend!?'
Cause we're the bitterest boys in town
Me and Percy were sitting by the lake watching the sunset He leaned his head on my shoulder
"So about what happened earlier- I didn't mean to call you my girlfriend- I mean not that I would mind for you to be my girlfriend I would love that- but of course you have a choic-"
Cause we're the bitterest boys in town
I kissed him and once I pulled away I looked at him and smiled
"I would love nothing more than to be your girlfriend Percy"
I leaned my head on his shoulder as I looked back to the sunset I heard him sigh in relief
"cool"
He leaned his head on top of mine
Yeah I definitely got used to him and I don't regret it
And I got myself a citrus friend

-THIS SPANS OVER A COURSE OF A FEW WEEKS OR MONTHS-
The apartment she temporarily was moved in was quite nice even if most of her belongings were still going to be in boxes stacked around everywhere until she was located and given a house. She had all the basics she needed anyways. It was only a matter of time until she would be given a full house anyways. The very next day she was back to work as usual taking one of the many greyhorse buses until she got to that greenhouse in town. It was always so calming being around so many plants and taking care of something. They were her babies in a way. She was always watering them, giving them the highest quality fertilizer and plant food money could buy, and trimming away any dead leaves or stems. Only the best for her babies and her customers. She was often complimented on how healthy her plants were or how pretty the flowers were or how delicious the various fruits and vegetables that she had grown was there. It was hard work but hearing that people were happy with her work was reassuring to hear. She hadn't seen or heard anything from any REALTORS for almost two weeks since meeting Heim a while ago but she wasn't surprised too much about it. REALTORS were going to do what they please despite her offers. However she had a small surprise waiting for her when she arrived home and found a certain lure huffing and puffing down the street and towards the apartment complex and towards herself.
"Well if it isn't Mr. Baile. How nice to see you again," Rose greeted amused and crossing her arms, "Are you on the hunt for more buyers today?"
He stopped right in front of her wheezing a bit and taking a moment to catch his breath so to speak before smiling at her. "Nah. I'm on my way to that burger place near here. I got a few coupons off for 'em from some newspapers."
"I see." Her brow rose at him. "I wasn't aware REALTORS had money. Or are you awarded a lump sum along with your feedings?"
Heim paused for a moment before looking off. "Ah..I uh... Didn't think of that. Guess I'm kinda stuck. I..Guess I don't need it anyways." His arms flopped down deflated. "! did already got my delivery this month anyways."
She chuckled despite herself and he blinked as she patted his shoulder. "Well I probably shouldn't do this, but If you really want one I can lend you a hand."
He immediately perked up. "You mean that?!"
She nodded. "I wasn't feeling up to cooking dinner tonight anyways." She jabbed a thumb over her shoulder. "C'mon. You can pay me back by letting me use your coupons."
"DEAL! Wow. Not only are you pretty, but you're S-So nice to an old run down house like me too."
"Hey. You're not run down." Rose assured him with a smile and pat on his shoulder. "You're a really nice person and it's what's on the inside that matters."
He hummed. "Well I do have a nice TV so not every house can claim that!"
She giggled again. "I was talking about how nice you are again but it is a nice TV." Heim puffed his chest in pride as he waddled next to her. He certainly was a sweet guy. Can't say that about a lot of REALTORS. "We can bring them back to my place and watch some TV if you'd like."
"Really?!"
"Sure. It'd be nice to have company."
She had a quiet evening and spent it with Heim watching TV. A few nature documentaries and a few generic drama shows here and there. It was new to have a REALTOR sit on her sofa for a few hours watching TV before leaving with his burgers to no doubt be digested by his main body. He surely was a sweet little guy. Perhaps all REALTORS could learn a lesson or two from him. She again didn't see Heim for about another week until he showed up again walking past her apartment building and it was her day off. She was just taking a potted plant outside to plant in the apartments lot when she spotted him waddling his lure down the sidewalk.
"Hello, Heim. Going to the burger place again today?"
He seemed happy to see her but shook his head no. "Actually there's a new ice cream place that sells burgers AND ice cream! Can you believe it? I heard they're giving away free food all day for their grand opening! I can't miss that!"
"Didn't you get your monthly dose of feeding this month already?"
"Well..yes. But I can't miss a good deal like this!"
Her brows rose higher as she looked at him. "You're still eating fast foods huh? Have you tried the salads and fruits the convience stores have? I think those are pretty good too."
"Yeah. Sure. I've had them a couple times but if there's somewhere that's giving away free burgers then I'm game!" He smiled wider gesturing at her to come along. "You wanna come?"
She shook her head before holding up the small potted plant. "Nah. I'm doing some winding down today and planting a few things."
He shrugged. "Suit yourself. Feel free to come join me later!"
"I'll think about it."
He nodded before walking away and she watched as he went off on whatever trip he had planned. He sure ate a lot of fast food huh? That can't be too healthy for him even if he wasn't human. Was that why he was in such bad shape? It didn't seem the ones who were feeding him didn't care or were even aware of that fact. He didn't even seem to mind that actually himself despite his initial nervousness when she first saw his main body. Things could only get worse if nothing was done about it.
.... Tomorrow morning she would be sure to bring everything she needed for the first step.
She was expecting Heim's surprise when she first got there. At first he didn't even respond to her showing up. Rose assumed he must've been asleep considering his lure cord wasn't leading anywhere outside. So she wasted no time stretching on the thick rubber gloves, opening the giant trash bag she brought along with her, and started walking around the yard picking up the many pieces of trash (again mostly empty take out containers) and throwing them inside the bag. The first step was to clean up the top mess, then she'd come back the next day with a company truck and haul what she really needed for this job.
Heim wasn't there the first time she showed up but his lure answered the door and stared in surprise at her when a company truck she borrowed and rolled up to his house. He stared in surprised silence as Rose just went about her business opening the back of the truck and hauling out a tiller she had also uh... borrowed from her boss's company for this task. He continued to watch as she rolled it up onto his front lawn and then turned around to walk back into the truck only for this time to struggle with a heavy bag of fertilizer.
"Uh...Rose?"
"Hello Heim," she grunted out between trying to haul the bag out.
"Um... Hey, pal. Whatcha doing there?" He pointed towards the truck and everything else.
"Fertilizer. I'm gonna till it into the dirt," she grunted finally dropping the massive bag by the tiller with a sigh. "Then I'll add a layer of top soli. I'll need to borrow a seed spreader and some grass seed from work later this week and we can get your situation better."
His eyes widened if that was even possible for his lure to do before looking around his yard. "You mean... You're gonna fix my yard?! For free!?"
"You'd better believe it. Now stand back. I wouldn't want to get your lure caught in the tiller." With one hand on the tiller and the other on the starting cord, Rose yanked it hard. And the engine roared to life.
The hard parts was tilling the fertilizer into the ground and then shoveling all the top soil everywhere. Good thing her bosses also ran a landscaping gig. She'd make up an excuse for why a bunch of fertilizer and top soil is gone later. Probably pretend she used it in some of the pots at work. Overall the hard parts were done and she could rest for a bit. Later that week she returned once again with the company truck and a few bags of grass seed and a seed spreader to start spreading the seeds all over the lawn before watering it all down with a nearby hose. It should take about a month to fully grow in. Hopefully she wouldn't have to overseed any spots. For now she could move on to the second thing he wanted to do. So imagine Heim's surprise when one day there was a knock on his door. Strange. He didn't order any takeout and he wasn't expecting anyone to deliver anything from the Mayor's office until his monthly feeding next month but he puppeteered his lure anyways to answer anyways. So imagine his surprise when he opened the door and found Rose standing there, but there was something else. In her hands was a giant basket of...fruits and vegetables??
"Uh...Heya, pal!" He smiled anyways upon seeing her albeit confused. "Sure is nice to see you again but what's up with the basket of goodies you're holding there?"
"This, Heim, is the new addition to your diet." Before he could ask anything she was already placing the giant basket into his arms as he blinked. "You need more nutritious foods and better carbs if you're going to repair the outer shell of your main body. Greasy fast foods like burgers and ice cream and anything else you're eating might keep you full, but it's not healthy. From now on You're going to be eating these fruits and vegetables and I want you to start repairing your outer shell. Once that's done your illusions should get better too." She smiled at him wider. "You'll be better soon. I'm going to be seeing you a lot more to make sure it happens too. Bet on it."
Rose kept her promise. Slowly but surely she began coming back more often than not when she could to deliver what actual healthy foods she could or anything extra her boss was about to throw out anyways. It was always still good enough for Heim to eat. Over the course of the next two months she made sure that his lawn was kept up as it slowly grew in an eventual bright green color and a few of the smaller cracks in Heim's walls had already healed. Heim himself was mostly flabbergasted about it all but also very grateful and even happy to see her a whole lot more.
"Hey! Y'know You're more than welcome to come inside," he said to her early one morning she showed up with a giant paper bag of apples from a sale down the street. "You've been so nice to me... It's the least I could do for ya."
Of course she had her concerns. "Are you sure? I wouldn't want to cause any inconvenience for you... Or let something else happen by accident. Aren't you still waiting on your feeding for this month from the Mayor's office?"
Of course he winced from her implying to be eaten alive but it was a valid concern considering most REALTORS wouldn't hesitate. "Well..Yeah. But I'm not really hungry right now." He gestured to her bag as if to get his point across. "You've been feeding me a lot more than I'm actually used to so I've been a lot more full lately. Honestly I -I wouldn't mind getting able to spend some time with you that's not you just taking care of me."
She hummed raising a brow at him. His words were genuine and he was really sweet...but she wasn't going to take a chance without ensuring her safety first. "Alright then. I have nothing else to do today anyway." He lit up but blinked as she held the bag to him. "But I want you to eat these first. I don't want to be in there while you digest them. No offense." And it'll help with any lingering hunger he might be feeling.
"... Kay. Fair enough, pal."
Actually being a REALTOR sure was... different. Can't say she'd ever done something like this before. She'd waited around forty five minutes for Heim to finish digesting and fully ensuring his insides weren't in the digesting process anymore before he (or more accurately his lure) answered the door again and happily beckened her inside. Rose hesitated at first. Heim wasn't a danger, not really. But when a REALTOR was hungry...Well she might've become food on accident if anything else. So she only stuck in her head at first. His illusions were gone allowing her to see the real meaty, fleshy insides. And across from her was Heim's lure resting on an armchair of the meaty flesh, eyes blackened.
"Are you gonna come in?", his voice asked slightly worried from everywhere around the room now that his lure wasn't in use anymore.
"Are you sure it won't be uncomfortable for you?" She asked concerned raising a brow. "I'll literally be walking around on what's probably you're stomach."
"Nah. It's not like I haven't felt it before walking this around all the time. It's a pain in my gutters chasing around people sometimes lemme tell ya."
"Alright. If you're sure."
She hesitated a few seconds but slowly stepped inside the doorway before pausing...and then slowly walking inside. Well this was certainly a new experience wasn't it? Other than poking her head in a few times she's never been inside another living creature before. The fleshy recliner Heim's lure sat on extended into the flesh sofa making it big enough for her to sit on. Slowly she walked over ... and slowly sat down. It was.. surprisingly comfy and soft albeit warm and squishy. The sounds of a nearby game show popped up on the TV and it soon had her attention gravitated towards it. Although she was aware in the back of her mind.  But.. nothing happened. Other than Heim shouting excitedly at the screen every time the host asked a question to one of the contestants. It was cute to hear him so excited. Until around two hours later the door knocked causing Rose to immediately look towards it in question.
"Are you expecting someone?"
"Not really," his voice answered from everywhere. "Unless it's a door to door salesmen. I hate those guys."
Rose continued to stare as the knocking came again before she stood up. "I'll see who it is. You just watch your show."
"Can't complain about that!"
She chuckled but walked over to the door and grabbed the doorknob and turned it. She opened it and paused. A pair of brown eyes on the other side also froze upon seeing her standing there. Both women just stood there for a long, long moment staring at one another. Eventually the other woman shook her head blinking at her.
"Excuse me for asking this...But have we met before?"
"I'm pretty sure we have." Rose rose a brow at her and the clipboard in her hands. "Ms. Woodrow if I remember right." She then looked at a stack of at least three boxes stacked on top of each other than almost reached Ivy's mid forearm. And a delivery truck was parked not too far from Heim's lawn. "I wasn't expecting you to show up here."
"I'm making sure a few of our known REALTORS get their monthly attoinment this month." This time it was her turn to look her up and down confused. "But you're not a REALTOR. Do I have the wrong address?"
"Did someone say food?"
Rose turned her head back inside and nodded. "Yeah. She says she's here to give you that monthly feeding you've been waiting for." She pushed the door all the way open to allow Ivy full access to the inside of the home. By now Heim's lure had popped his eyes back to normal to look at them both.
"Really?! Neato! I've been waiting for that forever."
"What exactly are you doing inside a REALTOR'S home?" Rose turned back to a confused and astonished Ivy. Her eyes looked between her and Heim. "I don't suppose I walked in on something bad happening."
"Actually we were just watching TV."
"TV?!" Ivy looked more perplexed at Roses casual answer.
Rose nodded again. "But I suppose it is time for me to go."
"So soon?" Heim looked saddened but Rose nodded.
"You have some more digesting to do and I don't think I should be inside while you do that but I'll tell you what. I don't have work next Friday. We can hang out then. Sound good?" He happily nodded. "Then I'll see you then." Rose then turned to Ms. Ivy. "You should make sure whatever you're feeding him is healthier than what he's been getting. He needs to start healing his outer shell more. Excuse me."
Ivy's eyes followed Rose as she stepped around her and walked away down the driveway and back into the street and down the road. She watched Rose go for a long moment before looking over at the REALTOR in a long, long moment of silence.
"Hey. What can you tell me about your relationship with her?"
More days passed since that day. She still did what she always did. Going about her day to day life until there was a knock at her apartment door early one morning. Confused she opened the door and on the other side was none other than Ms. Ivy. Rose blinked at her but before she could say anything Ivy spoke.
"Ms. Rose Willow I assume. Do you have a moment? I think we should talk."
Rose rose a brow at her. "I'm sorry but I'll be late for work."
"I've already informed your employers about that," Ivy interrupted by holding up a hand. "Please. This is really important."
Rose stared at her for a long moment before crossing her arms and leaning against her door frame. "Alright. You got my attention."
Ivy smiled at her. "Thank you. It won't take too long I promise. I just wanted to talk to you about what happened last week."
"Was there something wrong with me visiting Heim?"
"No, no. Not at all. I was actually quite intrigued by it all. He told me everything you've been doing with him." Rose rose her brow higher suspicious. "You know usually it's not advised to feed REALTORS then again there's not a lot of people who willingly associate with them."
"Am I being arrested for giving him fruit?"
She shook her head smiling wider. "Quite the opposite actually. I'm impressed with the level of kindness and humanity you've shown towards Heim Baile. So I came by to stop and ask you a question. What is your opinion on REALTORS and other non-human species as a whole?"
Rose was surprised by the question but answered. "I think they're alright. Obviously you should be careful around a lot of them but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat them like a pack of cockroaches. I find a lot of them pretty nice actually. Heim sure is."
That made Ivy light up more. "I'm glad you think that because I'd like to offer you a job opportunity."
That was certainly a surprise. "A job?"
"It would only be once a month and you'd still be able to work your regular day job," she assured Rose, "I think you'd be a great addition for the Mayor's REALTOR feeding program."
"Oh. The feeding program huh?"
"I'd be your employer for it of course as the Mayor is usually busy with more important matters. But it has good benefits. You'll be paid a hundred dollars for every one REALTOR you feed. We'll start you on just feeding one REALTOR per month and then slowly add more but it'll be an amount you can surely handle. What do you say? I think with your way of thinking you'd be great at the job."
Rose still stood there for a solid moment before humming. "That's...a tempting offer but I don't know."
"You don't have to answer now. Here." A small card was held up to her. "Here's the number for the Mayor's office. Call me if you change your mind." She slowly took the card and looked at it. "If you change your mind, there'll be a certain amount of food given to you to distribute to certain REALTORS. More will be explained if or when you decide."
"...Ok. I'll think about it but no promises."
There was a few days of rethinking it over. In that time life passed on as normal or as normal as it did around here. She had thought about it for a while... before calling the number. Why not? It sounded like a great deal and it wouldn't hurt to make an extra hundred dollars a month. So she dialed the number and arranged for it to be done. It wasn't so bad meeting with Ivy again and having her explain the basics. Once a month a supply of food would be delivered to her apartment and it was her job to deliver it all to Heim and then mail the Mayor's office a filled form with Heim's signature confirming he had gotten it. The check for a hundred dollars would be mailed to her a week after. Seemed simple enough. Sure enough the very next month there was a knock on her door one day and she answered it seeing a mailman delivering three Giant boxes before having her sign for them and leaving. All Rose could do for a moment was stand there before lightly kicking the stack of boxes. It felt heavy and barely budged from her light kick.
"... I need to buy a car."

As a Floridian, let me just say something about water.
It is not an ornament. It is not a playground. It is a soup of fish poop and lawn fertilizer runoff and sometimes reptilian carnivores that preceded and outlived the dinosaurs. It wants you to gawk at it and forget about inconvenient details like "flood plains" "storm surge" and "evacuation zones." But water is patient and given half a chance or 140 mile an hour winds blowing out from the sea against the coastline, it will take back that mangrove swamp that developers half a century ago drained off and sold to unsuspecting dupes as "paradise."
I personally didn't lose anything in Helene or Ian or Charley, but I've known people who did, and I have had the experience of trying to estimate how screwed I was based on the water level against the mailbox.
What is happening in Florida ironically fits a model that has been discussed in many places but especially Robert Evans et al's "It Could Happen Here" with is term "the crumbles." Less of a sudden, sharp societal collapse and more of a slow but steady erosion. There are people along the Florida coastline, especially in Big Bend (that's the curve between the peninsula and the Panhandle for those not in the know) and the Fort Myers metro area that have experienced devastating flooding two or three times in two years now. The insurance market is a mess because not only is a bad for profit business model to insure coastal Florida areas, its turning into something that's simply not feasible. The money just isn't there.
So what does that mean longterm? Well for the near term, probably an acceleration of existing trends. People who already were being priced out by property taxes and the uninsurability of their homes and business calling a quits and leaving for other areas. If you leave in a rapidly overheating housing market in the Sunbelt, you may very well already be familiar with refugees from Florida's insane politics and crazier housing costs turning up.
The properties they sold off or abandoned will likely be acquired by deep pocketed interests who will redevelop them into some mix of more resilient or something more disposable: expensive timeshares and vacation rentals for instance. Itinerant residents tend to have no loyalty to the community, resent paying into schools and infrastructure, and care little if the area is ecologically ruined and denuded of native wildlife and plant life because for them the carefully manicured and managed illusion of nature will be assumed to be reality.
As a Floridian is my deep seated conviction that having your economic driver be tourism and planned communities breeds reactionary politics. Hospitality doesn't really care if its workers are well educated as long as it has workers. If it has to import those workers and have them live dormitory style, then that's what it will do. Hospitality has no vested interest in infrastructure beyond the walls of its carefully curated experiences, although too much crime and poverty in the news might be a problem.
This is much the same for planned communities that market heavily to remote workers and retirees out of state. Thus there's money for law enforcement but not public infrastructure, public green spaces, education, healthcare etc. because there are amenities to be provided at a premium and on a for profit basis by the owner, not entitlements for people outside the walls of the planned community.
And it almost assuredly breeds contempt. The maintenance department, the check in clerk, the ride share driver: these are not your neighbors. They're from another country, if not literally, then proverbially. They're from the outside. The outside where it is dirty and people are presumed uneducated, coarse, and unruly.
And of course, savvy politicians lean into this. Watch the political ads. The real Floridians are identified as retired or upper middle class suburbanites. No one is for the farm hands picking the ever declining citrus monocultures, the crops falling prey to disease and the land itself becoming more valuable for housing than it is commercial use. If you have a lawn care or pool cleaning business, you can imagine they're talking to you when they talk about small business owners, but there again its not as your employees or perhaps even you get to live in the same neighborhoods as your clients and increasing its not clear you get to live anywhere.
There is some small, dark satisfaction to be gained from the knowledge that, much like the next wave of construction that will happen along the coasts, the pastures, wilderness, and farmland being paved over has been left green for good reasons and the bill for fraudulent impact assessments and security theater flood mitigation will come due. But the developers will have long ago fled town with suitcases full of cash, leaving their tenants waist deep in sewage and hungry reptiles after substandard seawalls and pumps failed.
It would be easy to hate the ignorant who didn't look beyond the walls of their gated communities. In the end they will be suckers and I pity them because many of them will lose family photos and home equity, only to have their insurance company declare insolvency and fight their claims tooth and nail. Many of them will not be the uber rich, many will be the petite bourgeois whose extravagant (by our standards) lifestyle was always far more perilous than they or we could have possibly imagined.
Because water is patient and it will have its swamp back.
