So I’ve been thinking about the ancient elves and the Dalish. And how apparently there is nothing left of the elves. Of course a lot was destroyed by the Humans but still such a big influential society just don’t disappear into thin air. The ruins scattered across Thedas are proof of just that.
Language and culture evolve such is the way things. So even with the elves being oppressed it’s very unlikely that their language and culture is completely gone.
It’s more likely that the information we have access to throughout the lore and codexes are seen through mostly human eyes. With exception of characters who have reason to know more aka Solas, Morrigan, Ablas and Fellasan to mention a few. And such the information regarding the elves is at best incomplete.
It makes sense that the Dalsih know a great deal more about their culture than humans an even Solas believe. After all he has (in game) not actually spent a lot of time with the Dalish only seen whatever remains spirits have picked up in the Fade.
And if we apply this theory to the games, one could imagine that Lavellan in particular would posses a good deal more knowledge than he (my Lavellan is male) lets on.
Something as simple as the glyphs in the exhalted plains. Lavellan get short burst of information from lighting them up. (This of course is probably true regarding every inquisitor no matter the race) but if we go on the in game information veilfire is elven magic. And so one would think one would need an elven mage to access them which I presume would be Solas with other races.
Although from a pure lore standpoint Solas claims he’s never seen veilfire only heard of it. Of course he could be lying but bear with me on a in game lore rant. Solas lived in a world where the Fade and Thedas was one. So the need for veil fire would be non existent. My guess is that the Dalish might use veil fire to write secret messages such as the way to Dirthramen’s temple or the location on an arthlahaven. And that the veil fire we find in the crossroads during Trespasser is purposely placed there by Solas to get Lavellan to follow the trail. Just a thought.
Another hint at this that I find interesting is the boy in the Exhalted plains that run away from his clan to impress the keeper. He found the location to Elandrias talisman but could not break the seal on his own and tries to summon a demon. How would he find the way without any information? Rumors might be a start but he would need something, say that there is a written account of Elandrias legend which would make sense. And that this is written in common tounge is unlikely. Why would the elves write down something so precious so a human could find it. No it would have been written in elven.
And there is more in the temple of Mythal Lavellan (going head cannon here) recognizes the language as ancient elven. He can’t translate but he does understand it’s elven. Which makes no sense unless he would know both how to read and write modern eleven and probably some ancient elven.
I’m Norwegian and interested in languages but I can tell you I would not be able to read Viking runes but because I’lve learned a little at school and through my own curiosity I can recognize that a text is indead written in Viking runes and not let’s say Latin or Celtic just for comparison. This would not be possible without pré knowledge. And I dare say that if you play a mage you are the keepers apprentice which mean he is very likely to have been thought a good deal of eleven even the ancient one. But he will say the same as a rouge. Which mean that at least the Lavellan clan know how to read and write elven and have been thought enough that they can recognize a language that is millennia old. I assure you the Norwegian I read and write now is nothing like what the Vikings used.
And from a pure evolutionary point of view. Language and culture evolve continuously and societies will have accounts a big one like Elvenan would have lots and no not all of it would be hidden in the crossroads or lost with Arlathan.
One does not stop speaking. So the elves that built Hamshiral, the emerald knights and last noble houses of Arlathan would have kept using their language.
If one think about it, speaking a language that no human in Thedas understand would have been an advantage they would have used.
When the dales fell the only elves who would benefit from not speaking elven would be the city elves.
And those who speak also write, messages, letters, lists and so on. Interesting fact there is a mosque in Istanbul that has a Viking rune carved in it. We’re talking 800 years ago some Viking dickhead with a knife carved Erik is awesome into a temple wall. So yeah. People leave traces. Not that I think the elves went around and carved dicks into chantry walls, but the plausibility is there.
The arrow stuck in the roof at Skyhold(just above the garden go check) has elven carved into it. Now someone at Skyhold would have translated that, highly likely someone went to Lavellan and asked.
Again people like marking there territory so to speak, the elves that fled the dales probably had quivers full of arrows saying things like “fendis shems”, or bags of herbs or food marked so one didn’t accidentally eat Raveshine which from what I understand is poisonous.
And they would have had beautifully carved weapons, cutlery, jewellery, books and other nick nacks. One does bring the most precious things.
Clothes as well, tack for their Halla. All of these things have as much impact on a culture as oral stories and legends.
The Dalish work to preserve what was, Bioware have chosen to focus on religion and how it evolves over time. But from a historical perspective religion is only a small part of what make our a culture. And a culture as powerful as the elven one are no small matter to erase.
So it makes no sense at all that all the Dalish are left with is a warped religion, useless tools and simple phrases.
But in a world like Thedas where the elves are hated and feared it makes more sense to hide.
The Dalish keep their cards close to their chest. What would make sense is that they speak elven amongst themselves and common tongue when needed. Coming from a minority language myself there are benefits to doing it that way.
And what we hear in the games might be as simple as that some words are difficult to use in any other language than elven.
In Norwegian “hæ” is a very oral way of saying “what” it’s so stuck in my speech pattern that even when I speak English I end up saying hæ. But I have lived on the British îles for such a long time I say Sorry instead of “unnskyld” And “au” which roughly translates to “ouch”.
Such is the way when one deal with several lanauges on a daily basis. I have a Belgian friend that grew up in Dublin and she can figure out using “pradon” and “great craig” in the same sentence.
I’m a handweaver I work on a loom that has not changed it’s design for 500 years or so. The loom itself is 10-15 years old, things that work move on. And things one always need like clothes, bowls and tools. A hammer might be made of steel instead to iron but it’s still a hammer.
My point is the Dalish elves have learned to adapt to stay alive, but when no one is looking they speak the same words sing the same songs and cook with the same things the elves of Arlathan did.
Right game rant done

Lys Lavellan and the No Good, Very Bad Time in and after the temple of Mythal
allowed a human to drink from the Well of Sorrows instead of drinking himself because everyone was worried what such an unknown power that apparently comes with a price could do to the person who is solely responsible for saving the world
if his grandmother/Keeper learns of this, she will banish him from the clan for sure
ancient elves fucking hate the Dalish
Mythal got killed???
Morrigan would not shut up in the temple even though Lavellan is DALISH. If you closed your piehole for a moment, Morrigan, maybe you'd learn why there is a Fen'Harel statue next to the entrance!
Cassandra, Bull, we are absoluetely NOT desacrating a temple of a goddess Lavellan believes in. stand here while he runs around some tiles
Abelas, have you ever actually spoken to a Dalish elf?
Dorian, vhenan, why are you so worked up over the fact that it wasn't Tevinter who destroyed the elven civilization? Isn't that good news in a way?
wait, what do you mean leave for Tevinter???
all the troops are stuck in the Arbor Wilds but Samson is here so quickly, how does that work
"the dreadful after. I do not know what the future holds" Dorian you are kicking the elf. look at him, Dorian, he is already on the ground crying. just say whether you love him or not
look what you did Dorian! now the elf is crying even harder!
oh so if you bottle up your feelings and all the stress you're going through after leaving your home, surviving a huge explosion, being in the fade physically twice, being made a leader of an organization that has to save the world and being the only one in your relationship with some emotional intelligence, you might have a breakdown. is that what is happening rn? okay cool. time to wreck the room, scream and then pass out crying in your lover's arms as you're begging him not to leave you
no need to rub in the fact you now understand ancient elven jokes, Morrigan
wait, your mom is Mythal and wants to posses you and your son has/had a soul of an Old God? That's one fucked up family dynamic
Mythal just said Lavellan does the People proud :3 I dedicate this to all the haters who thought Lavellan wouldn't make it as Inquisitor and to Abelas personally. Your goddess likes him so much more than you >:3
love and peace in Thedas actually, the world is beautiful and everything will be fine
Dagna gets her samples of the Fade <3
oh no, why is the sky green
#oc: lys lavellan#dragon age#dragon age inquisition#inquisitor lavellan#i have Thoughts TM on my Inky's time in and after the temple#it is his lowest point through DAI#dorian also learns that maybe he should be a bit more open and straightforward with his feelings because lavellan doesn't read minds#that's definitely a very important moment in their relationship

A Call To Common Identity
The Free Marches need for a leader
As one of the main settings of Dragon Age, it shouldn't surprise anyone that I have personally always been a fan of the Free Marches. This collective of city-states posses a common cultural identity and a love for political autonomy, which made them swear they will never have a King, for no city-state has a claim on the others. Instead, they will always protect themselves from foreign aggressors, thanks to the political concept of "marcher solidariety". This is an excellent solution, for their combined force is nothing to joke on and their geography makes Tantervale, Starkheaven and Kirkwall among the richer and most powerful cities, making them important trade hubs.
However, that's a lie.
Across the serie (and the lore) we have seen the concept of marcher solidariety fail every time. There is no treaty that solidifies a duty to protect fellow marchers and this exposed many of them to foreign enslavement and occupation. Kirkwall has been under qunari occupation for years and it wasn't saved by anyone until the arrival of the orlesian army -which occupied them in turn- and then had to get rid of Orlais themselves.
Tantervale is, blatantly, violating the chantry "neutrality", for it's directly ruled by a Lord Chancellor (you know, the same title Roderick had in Inquisition) and there chantry law is the same as secular law, jailing kids and making Tantervale a theocratic nightmare even for the standards of Thedas.
When Meredith blocked the election of a Viscount in Kirkwall, no fellow city protested against that. Kaiten own Viscount is an ex Templar. The Inquisition can attack Wycome with their own troops during the Lavellan war table operation.
(Of couse, the Inquisitor interference saves the city and dalish elves, but the point isn't the morality of that action, but the fact that a foreign force like the Inquisition was so easily able to just command a free city, even if it's good that they did so)
The Free Marches are rich, politically divided and reluctant to aid each other. Many of them are puppets of foreign interests or are/have been occupied directly for a long time. To protect their own interest, they need to take a page from Ferelden book and unify into a single state like the divided alamarri tribes unified founding Ferelden.
But they swore to have no King right? And that's a valid sentiment. If a city tried to conquer another, that wouldn't hold. In fact one of Sebastian ancestors, "King" Fyruss of Starkheaven, tried and failed.
That is true but there is one simple solution. This solution is personally more prominent in my personal Red Schism AU, but there is proof of it in game-canon too.
If you complete the Lavellan wartable operations succesfuly, Wycome stops being ruled by a Duke and is instead ruled by a council of merchants and elves. The Free Marches refuse the title of King, but in Ferelden the crown is not hereditary. It has to be confirmed by the Landsmeet. Kirkwall nobles elect their own Viscount, and it can be anyone among them.
This are all examples, in-world, that Thedas is aware of the existance of democratic -or at least proto democratic- governments.
And so I do suggest that the Free Marchers should unify into a federal goverment (they probably wouldn't use this word, but it would basically be that) where every city state borders and autonomy are not touched, but one ruler is picked from one of the cities to determine matter of defence, stop infighting and protect the cities from coups. At the ruler end of term -or life, depending on how they decide- another one from a different city would be picked, granting their oath of freedom and allowing better political strenght.
Such a move would obviously need turmoil to be made, systems don't change in peace times and would be disliked by those foreign interests who don't want such an union the chantry and orlais especially .
The Mage-Templar war and Starkheaven vs Kirkwall (if you spared Anders, otherwise Starkheaven aid to Kirkwall), had Bioware bothered to develop it more, would have been perfect occasions for such an event to happen and in line with the Dragon Age being a time of political turmoil and change.
If this was an actual letter to the rulers of the Free Marchers, I would invite them to put aside petty rivalries and unify in conclusion, but I guess I'll just wish to find fics where this happens one day.
#dragon age#dragon age 2#dragon age inquisition#the free marches#meta#red schism au#kind of#it's easier in that au because there are a lot more democratic governments around#but there is plenty of proof that the concept isn't unheard of in canon too#so it could happen if bioware wasn't so fixed on never changing their game world and giving false choices#bioware critical

newfragile yellows [927]
“There is a saying that the meek shall inherit the earth, but only if we let them,” Solas muses as Ellana does her damned best to throw her worldly possessions over the top of the school’s fence. “But only if we let them. What do you think the definition of meek is, according to the people who coined this particular turn of phrase?”
“Did you and Professor Dirthamen switch classes suddenly?” Ellana asks, resisting the urge to scream when she fails, once more, to clear the top of the ridiculously high stone wall.
Solas, of course, ignores her.
“Perhaps they meant it as a more passive aggressive way of describing survival of the fittest. Or, it could be that they were talking about a moral failing of some sort, a lack of character in regards to strength of will and conviction in the traditional sense of the word meek. Or it could be a physical weakness.”
“Solas, either you’re here to tattle on me or you’re here to help me.” Ellana is starting to get out of breath and very tired.
The man pauses in his musings to catch her bag as it falls back down to earth once more, calmly swinging it onto his back.
“Or maybe it’s saying that those who lack much in the way of thinking skills threaten to outnumber and overpower those who do posses some modicum of higher level though and understanding of logic due to brute force of numbers. The ignorant shouting down the cries of enlightenment and such. Have you considered that your leather and cloth bag was not designed to be thrown over a very tall wall with such weak force at such an absurdly steep angle? Jun has failed you if you have yet to understand the mathematical equations going into this situation.”
“Professor Jun is a better instructor at more hands on, practical, skills than math and everyone knows it,” Ellana huffs. “Give that back.”
“Throw the items over one at a time,” Solas says, “And from a greater distance.”
Ellana scowls. “You couldn’t have told me that about thirty attempts ago?”
“I would have thought that by attempt two you would have considered trying a new strategy seeing as how it did not work the first time. But, alas, you were committed to your failings,” Solas says, handing the bag back to her. “Also I was curious to see if you could do it through sheer force of will.”
“You are an awful teacher.”
“I never claimed to be anything other than passable as a teacher and if anyone expected more from me that’s their fault, not mine,” Solas crosses his arms as Ellana reaches into her bag to pull out a survival knife.
“Don’t look at me like that. I do pay attention during our outdoor excursions. I’m not just collecting flowers and having a walk-about.”
“You’re throwing your weapon first? You weren’t keeping it on your person? Miss Lavellan, you are third in line for the throne. Has no one impressed upon you — “
“Is there anything you aren’t going to lecture me about?” Ellana groans. “You know, if you’re so clearly upset by how badly I’m doing this whole run away from school thing you could help me. As third in line for the throne surely I have some sort of…I don’t know. Authority? Some sort of authority to compel you to help me?”
“To help you run away from school to do what, exactly? That part has yet to be made clear.”
“Obviously I would be going back to Uncle Alim’s estate.”
“To what purpose?”
“Uncle is in the capitol with Aunt Neria, they’re doing something or other for the Queen. Something boring, no doubt.”
“You do realize that it’s going to be your duty in the future as well to assist Neria?”
“So while Uncle Alim is away his position back on our lands is weakened. News travels slower and it will be easier for me to get away with things.”
Solas pinches the bridge of his nose. “Are you planning a coup?”
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic. Nothing to that level. Just a little…restructuring of the staff is all. Maybe some…redecoration of certain key areas around the estate. The shuffling of some records and things.”
“Is this because your uncle has forbidden you from seeing the Qunari exchange student?”
“It’s absolute idiocy, Solas. Absolute lunacy. It’s pathetic and weak and I will not allow my uncle to control who I do and do not make friends with. I will not be limited by insular views and racial prejudice!”
“Have you considered that he’s doing it because you might cause a literal political scandal and everything you and the Iron Bull do needs to inscrutably perfect?”
“Has he considered that perfection is an unobtainable goal that poisons the mind?” Ellana retorts as she shoves her clothes inside a shirt and starts tying the shirt closed.
“It will wrinkle.”
“I have other things to worry about that aren’t wrinkles in my traveling clothes.”
“Like how you’re going to explain your attempt at subverting your uncle’s authority?”
“Oh, please. Everyone’s overreacting.”
“You are literally attempting to break out of school and lie, bluff, and swindle your way back to your uncle’s territory to cause trouble.”
“Have you considered that the fact that I have to break out of school, rather than be permitted to leave by my own free will granted to me by the gods themselves, is rather troubling? It’s like I’m in prison.”
“Not yet you aren’t.”
“Pardon?” Ellana turns to look back at her professor, arm raised as she’s about to throw her bundle of clothing. “Oh come on, professor. You couldn’t have said something sooner? Abelas, this is absolutely not what it looks like.”
Abelas looks at Solas. “Do you derive pleasure in watching your students blunder into these things?”
“Not at all,” Solas crosses his arms. “Lavellan, how many times must you be warned about observing your surroundings before you learn your lesson?”
“Professor, full offense meant, but I’ve never met someone so useless in my entire, albeit in comparison to yours short, life.”

🖊 i want to have a few sentence summaries of each oc you have and what fandom they’re for!!
Lawd have mercy, this is An Ask. I have so many babies. This is going behind a cut because it will be long.
FC5
🖊 - Del is my original deputy, born out of taking one look at Joseph and having the “oh no, he’s hot” reaction. Plus, Joseph as a character gives my heart a boner, so I had to do an oc to love up on him. She is the epitome of chaotic good. She only joined the sheriff’s department to pay the bills and because childhood bff Staci Pratt did. When they’re together, they have to share three braincells between them. They’re always getting into stupid shenanigans.
🖊 - April was my second. She’s a surgeon/child prodigy/was in medical school at age 16. She’s a little emotionally cold because of her background - emotionally neglectful parents, going right into a physically abuse marriage. She has three children from that marriage, and she moved to Hope County after being blackmailed asked by John Seed. She owed him a favor from when he was still John Duncan. She sees to the overall health and wellness of the Peggies - she does so many stitches, you guys. So many - and is also responsible for overseeing their medical supplies.
🖊 - Mavra is my captain, and she’s a stone cold badass. You know the phrase, “she would kill you as soon as look at you?” Well, Mav would much rather kill you than look at you. She’s the longtime partner (as in before the bombs even dropped) of Thomas Rush, and the mother of his daughter Mila. She is also pregnant during the events of FCND, but that comes out later (and I headcanon that baby will be a SuperBaby tm because of Eden’s Gift). As the Shepherd, she moves her children to New Eden and tries her best to get the two communities to cooperate, because they either all live together or die separately.
🖊 - Uli is another non-deputy oc. He’s an assistant district attorney in Missoula, and not really aware of the problems developing in Hope County. All he knows is he keeps getting files coming across his desk of people being arrested for serious crimes and represented by a lawyer who graduated from an ivy league school. This intrigues him and he decides to do a little digging. That’s how he meets John and it’s hate at first sight. It’s also lust at first sight and they end up hatefucking quite a lot. That is, until they both catch feelings.
RDR2
🖊 - Jessie is my main rdr2 girl. She’s pretty much a self insert into rdo who travels all around with her posse (her fam) doing jobs as the need strikes. She’s chaotic neutral. Killing, kidnapping, and destruction of property, right alongside rescues and recovery of property. She is a bounty hunter, again, as the need strikes. She’s happiest hunting and searching out treasures, and she avoids other people like the plague. That is, until she gets ambushed by a bunch of O’Driscolls and is assisted by one Arthur Morgan (as in, he’s riding through the aftermath and shoots the last remaining guy right before she sticks a hunting knife in his neck). Since she’s separated from her posse for the time being, she accepts his offer of safe harbor with the VDL gang.
🖊 - Lovisa is my other one. She’s a Swedish transplant into Saint Denis and she’s a doctor. At least, she practices medicine, even if the stupid rich old men on nob hill refuse to acknowledge her. She’s protected from charges of quackery charges by grateful patients who would otherwise be turned away from “decent” hospitals and doctors. She lives in a slum and is mostly paid in food, but at least she eats well.
🖊 - Evaline is my last rdr2 oc (so far). She’s got kind of a sketchy background right now because she’s so new, but so far I know that she was abandoned by her parents at a train station. There wasn’t an orphanage or anything she could go to, but she was taken in by the owner of a hotel in exchange for cleaning and helping out around the place. As long as she minded her Ps and Qs and avoided a beating, it wasn’t a bad life. She works as a bath girl now, and she hoards her money in a sack under her bed. As soon as she has enough saved for a decent horse, she’s going to ride out of town and never look back.
FO4
🖊 - Berenice is my FO4 baby. And boy, is she dealing with a lot. She did not cope well with the initial events of the game and spent most of the time internally screaming. But she pulls up her big girl stockings, gathers her group of ragtags, and turns into a capable leader. She and Danse totally get it on.
Destiny
🖊 - Foxtrot-5 is my exo hunter. She’s a Gunslinger who travels The Way of A Thousand Cuts. She’s a bi disaster, or bisaster. She has a crush on Zavala, and it’s honestly embarrassing for everyone involved. EVERYONE. Ultra reliant on her ghost, Sammy, to curb her dumber ideas. Cayde-6 was her best friend. She was wounded on Titan in a Hive nest and it took hours before she died and could be resurrected. It was very traumatic for her and Sammy, and she hasn’t been quite the same since. He’s afraid she might need to be rebooted, but he doesn’t want to lose her. Who knows what Foxtrot-6 will be like. She took off for the Tangled Shore as soon as they announced they were looking for a Hunter Vanguard.
🖊 - Neza is my awoken warlock. She’s a Voidwalker following the Attunement of Fission. She’s a Gensym scribe, a member of the Praxic Order with the Cormorant Seal, and she is married to Banshee-44. They’ve been together for like 80 years, since he was Banshee-15, and they’re very happy, tyvm. She is the apprentice of Asher Mir - whether he likes it or not, she’s not going to let all that knowledge die with him. She was furious after the Pyramidion debacle and barely spoke to him for like three years. He pretended to love it, but missed his “assistant”.
🖊 - Lia is my human titan. She’s a Striker and follows the Code of the Missile and is a little punch happy. She and her strike team mainly hang out on Nessus and keep the remnants of the Red Legion and the Vex from causing too much trouble. She is the: Captain, Godslayer, Iron Lord, Young Wolf, Hivebane, Kingslayer, Crota’s End, Rivensbane, Shadow of Earth, MMXIX, VIP #2014, etc etc etc. She’s lost track of her titles, thinks they’re a bit stupid really, but she has an overactive sense of duty and she rushes into a fight without really thinking it through. She is currently working for the Praxic Order to take down The Drifter, and she might be a teensy weensy bit compromised. But he better keep away from her ghost.
DA
🖊 - Ursella Cousland is my Hero of Ferelden. I think we’re all very familiar with the Cousland background by now. She tried to honor her parents by using their teaching in all of her dealings, like when to be diplomatic and when to solve a problem with a knife. Dual wield rogue. She marries Alistair and becomes Queen of Ferelden and lives happily ever after. Let me ended it there, bioware you assholes
🖊 - Marilyn Hawke is the Viscountess of Kirkwall. Purple Hawke, my dudes. Another rogue here (I have a type, okay.) Fenris is her boo. Anders critical because, I as her creator, find Anders repulsive. She definitely kills him in the end. As much as she would love to, she is no longer able to follow Fenris around on his adventures. She gets stuck in the Fade, but you bet your ass she’ll be out and ready to kick Fen’Harel’s ass in jig time.
🖊 - Adelais Trevelyan was my first Inquisitor. As the youngest daughter of many, many siblings, she feels like she has quite large shoes to fill. Dedicated Andrastian. I headcanon that she was basically starting from scratch, combat wise. She’s would much rather be curled up with a book than out drilling in the snow. Cassandra definitely has to chase her down for training, but they bond over smutty literature. She’s reliant on Vivienne to keep her from embarrassing herself with her country bumpkin ways. They’re the land rich cash poor kind of nobility. She’s related to like…everyone. Family members all over the place. She’s madly in love with Cullen.
🖊 - Haletelbana (Bana) Lavellan is obvs my Elven inkie. I know they say the Lavellan clan roams the Free Marches, but I decided to make canon my bitch and say they were a desert clan based in the Western Approach. She joins Dorian in bitching whenever she gets cold. Eventually they just decide to share a bedroll for the warmth anytime they’re anywhere the temperature drops below sweltering. She sees the ocean for the first time in the Storm Coast and falls in love. Stupid sexy Solas breaks her heart. She also puts Briala in a position of power fuck you Celene
The Arcana
I blame @pabstbeerpussy for this.
🖊 - Sadb (pronounced Sayv) is the name of my apprentice. I don’t have much of a backstory for her yet, but she and Asra are in every kind of love it’s possible to be in, okay? Her familiar is a red panda named Batsa.
I have more, but I think this has gone on more than long enough, plus tumblr has already crashed once. But I’m always happy to scream about my babies!
#my ocs#Thanks for asking!#fc5#rdr2#fo4#destiny 2#dragon age inquisition#the arcana#i forgot Mass Effect#but damn#this is long

I have a bunch of little HC for Tamaris that really doesn’t have a place in anything else I have planned ATM, so I am just plop it here because it’s fun little stuff about her and there has been some love for my girl... which is amazing.. so here is some more about Tamaris.
Her Name is very Poetic and holds a lot of hits towards her story - So I pulled both her and Mathras’s names from Project Elvhen’s book of names. Her name means “Forever your Second” or basicly your best friend forever or partner forever. *looks at Solas* Yeah um...Mathras’s name means Shadow’s Nurishment.... this holds meaning too.
The Twins are inspired a little by Dirth’a’min and Falon’din - I have nothing more to say than yes about this without giving any of my fic’s plot away... but yes.. *shifty eyes*
Of the twins Tamaris is the younger - This is just something that Mathras’s holds over her, often calling her “Little Sister” and claiming to be “Older, wiser, more experienced...” Tamaris does not find this amusing always pointing out it was just a few moments older.
Varric calls her Bubbles - this really does deserve a much longer explanation but the long and short of it is Tamaris gets very giggly and excited when she finds some new shard, mosaic piece, puzzle, riddle, tidbit of info... she loves that. Varric thinks she has the sweetest laugh (...Solas agrees as well) and it’s like the first time a kid sees bubbles from soap flying across the room. Hence... Bubbles.
Tamaris loves Nugs - Okay.. this was just something really random I wanted her to have. Like she has always wanted one as a pet, never allowed as a child. Ends up talking Nugs with the resident Nug Breeder, Leilana, who gives one as a pet for Tamaris her birthday. Tamaris names the little thing Fluffy (an ironic name), but Mathras suggests The Dread Nug because apparently Tamaris had some affinity to a story as a child that involved Fen’Harel... Solas is not amused.... at all... I have a one shot planned around this... it’s very amusing. Set during the main game, while Tamaris and Solas are still together... good times...
Going to the conclave was the first time Tamaris ever saw humans - Tamaris, more so than Mathras, was raised very protected by the Clan. I am still trying to work out the finer points of how Clan Lavellan would treat/raise a dreamer (this is something that is requiring much lore digging to get right) but what I do know is they wouldn’t have ever let her leave the Clan as a child... the only reason I HC she is being sent away now is because the Keeper was too ill to travel travel themselves. Tamaris being the first, was sent with Mathras, who I think is called a “hunter” but is more like a “master of whispers” and very adept at dealing with the outside world.
She hates fighting and killing - This is something that I think fits her personality the most. The girl is happiest in the library with books and blankets (mood right?) but because she has the anchor she is forced to go out and fight for the first time in her life. I think while she is a very skilled mage naturally, she has little to know actual combat skills for much of early part of the main story. Most of her study prior to the whole Inquisition, was in healing magic. Which the Keeper thought would be the safest path for her. Shocker though, Tamaris is actually far more talented with elemental magic, particularly lighting and fire. Most of the skill she posses by the end of the game is taught to her by Solas or Dorian. Even though she developed the skill, she still doesn’t like it any more. In the end it’s why she asks Mathras to be named Inquisitor and she is just wants to be the “Lady with the glowing hand that will destroy the world”

bigfan-fanfic’s OCs
So, because I couldn’t stop with the ideas, here’s three new OCs I thought of and a summary of them all. Feel free to ask about them.
Putting it all under the cut so it looks like a short post. Please have a look!
Athalan (Formerly Mellethan Mahariel)
Dalish Elf, Rogue (Ranger, Bard)
Mellethan Mahariel was a hunter for Clan Mahariel, until he found himself on the wrong side of an eluvian. He became lost in the Crossroads until he ventured by accident into our world. Nearly going insane from the sights and feel of the Fade being entirely cut off, he made his way back through before succumbing to the psychic trauma and dying. He had a vision of Mythal guiding him back to life, telling him he must stop Fen’Harel sometime in the future. He remembers little of his former life, taking a new name, Athalan, and traveling to help people. His two hunting wolves, Bear and Bellenar, he is convinced are a gift from Mythal, and together the three of them join Aster and his party to stop the Blight. Later, he finds and adopts a young elven child, Gaelaneir, and raises him as his own. He senses Fen’Harel’s hand and goes with his son to join the Inquisition. Romance undecided. Maybe Bann Teagan.
Found on Google images - Face Claim Norman Reedus. I imagine Athalan with long hair, tied back, like Reedus’ character in Death Stranding.
Gaelaneir “Gale” Lavellan
Dalish Elf, Rogue (Assassin)
His past is a mystery. Though he is ostensibly of Clan Lavellan, no member recognizes or has heard of him. Found lost in a forest by Athalan at twelve, just after he parted from the other saviors of Ferelden, Gale latched on to him and became his surrogate son. Growing into a heroic and generous young man, Gale seeks adventure and romance with the Inquisition, going so far as to fall for the beautiful and pacifistic Lady Josephine Montilyet.
Found on Google Images - Face Claim Colton Haynes. I see Gale as looking pretty much exactly like this guy.
Delphina “Delphi” Tabris
City Elf, Warrior (Spirit Warrior/Berserker)
Her wedding with Nelaros ruined, Delphi fled Denerim with Duncan, only to later flee the Wardens before the Joining and escape the Battle of Ostagar. She returned to the party soon after to help them against the Blight, growing in confidence as a warrior. Despite her soft and cheery demeanor out of combat, she is a devastating fighter in combat, using both spirits and rage to become a frighteningly effective killing machine and earning her place as King Alistair and Chancellor Aster’s personal operative. After the Blight, she made her way to Kirkwall to keep King Alistair apprised of the situation, and met Cullen for the second time. In Inquisition, she goes to Haven to help her old friend Leliana and eventually starts a romance with Cullen, seeing how far he’s come and finally finding love.
Found on Google Images - Vanessa Hudgens
------------
Summary of Characters - * means that I would pair with other OCs platonically and ^ means they’re up for romantic OC/OC pairings too.
The Origins Crew - Saving the world with a whole lot of positivity and a lack of awareness.
Aster Amell* - Uber-positive former Circle Mage trying to do the right thing as he becomes basically King. Romances Alistair. Human Mage (Spirit Healer) Warden.
Morgan Walker^* - Stuck in Thedas and loving it, a newly minted mage learning magic and becoming a hero through a shady sex ritual. Romances Morrigan. Outworlder Human Mage (Shapeshifter/Arcane Warrior) Warden.
Athalan^* - Two wolves, no waiting. Claims to have been resurrected by Mythal from the future and on a quest to stop Fen’Harel. Dalish Elf Rogue (Ranger)
Delphi Tabris^* - Redefining “left at the altar” and becoming a total fighting machine with a love of flowers. Romances Cullen in Inquisition. City Elf Warrior (Spirit Warrior/Reaver)
Katie Cousland^* - Girl caught in Thedas, becoming a powerful warrior and noble through luck and skill. Outworlder Human Warrior (Guardian)
Reyn Caron^* - New Warden-Commander of Ferelden, an exiled noble knight from Orlais with a pure heart under a surly exterior. Human Warrior (Spirit Warrior) Warden
The Hawke Posse - A good sib and and evil sib, and together they save the city.
Cal Hawke^* - The good sib, settling conflicts despite a lack of ambition, a lot of pining, and a drinking habit. Romances Varric. Elf-blooded Human Rogue (Duelist)
Ava Hawke^* - The evil sib, using blood magic and a lack of mercy to help her fellow mages and her friends. Romances Fenris and Sebastian. Human Mage (Blood Mage/Force Mage)
The Inquisition Kids - Just give them love; they need it.
Tash Adaar* - Little Qunari mage who became the Inquisitor and is a little ball of sunshine while he saves the world. Qunari Mage (Knight-Enchanter) Inquisitor
Owain Bonneville^* - Disowned Trevelyan heir breaking away from rigid family and needing guidance. Romances The Iron Bull or Ser Rylen. Human Warrior (Champion)
Henry Lucas^* - College student with zero skills trying to make his way through Thedas as the Inquisition’s Oracle. Romances either Cole or Solas. Outworlder Human Non-Combatant.
Lottie Gamez^* - Genius inventor with a chip on her shoulder using her intellect and reason to work this Thedas thing out. Romances Blackwall. Outworlder Human Rogue (Tempest).
Gale Lavellan^* - Foundling elf joining the Inquisition with adopted dad and helping protect the Herald. Romances Josephine. Dalish Elf Rogue (Assassin).

a character meme sure ok
Tagged by: nobodyyyyy, but since i’ve been feeling supremely disconnected and uninspired by the da universe lately and still miss my stupid children, here’s a thing anyway.
Tagging: fingerguns
― your muse’s name:
sehren lavellan
companion!au because inquisitor sehren is suffering and heartburn and i ain’t about that life just now
― one favourite picture / faceclaim of your muse:
all angles and crude edges and probs wearin’ someone else’s scarf as a shirt but there are uncomfortable vulnerabilities in there somewhere with all of the sticks and sharp little rocks
― two headcanons you have for your muse:
folk tend to misconstrue her disconnection with her clan as contempt, and while she’s certainly disillusioned with what she understands as desperation in dalish attempts at clinging to the cracked and scattered bones of a culture that serve them better lost, she’s also desperate to find some way for the dalish (lavellan, specifically)to move on, bury the corpse they’ve been dragging with them and build something new. fuck if she has any idea how to go about doing that - the corpse of the elvhen all gilded and smiling, barren and wasted as it is. forgetting isn’t the answer, and the deeper the inquisition stumbles into the ashes of her people the more she’s convinced not that the dalish have been so much robbed of or abandoned by their history but more that what’s there to learn might push them into being better, because as far as she can see they already are. knowing, but shedding the husk to grow into their own. she’s always felt unmoored from clan and history in general, in part by blood (lavellan less dramatic about mingling with outsiders, but the stigma remains among the more traditional clan members), but more by temperament.
all that vague bullshit aside, she’s got an innately good sense of direction - the kind which makes her an excellent scout. “lost” is an apt existential descriptor, but rarely correct regarding her physical location in the world.
― three things that your muse likes doing in their free time:
wandering. stillness doesn’t suit her, nor stasis. sometimes you look for her and she’s just gone with no notice, and back with no explanation a week or two later. whether it’s something she “likes” or not is irrelevant.
making orlesians uncomfortable. orlesian nobles, specifically, just beg to be fucked with. she doesn’t make a particular habit of it, but especially if there’s some pompous ass in a space he neither understands nor belongs you can bet she’s in his periphery being more dalish than usual.
sketching, documenting spaces. she’s an accidental natural historian, and her journals (which she binds herself) are filled with notes and maps and little drawings of birds and insects and things with too many teeth.
― seven people your muse loves / likes:
varric - grounded and solid and absolutely full of shit is right the fuck up sehren’s alley. every idiot needs someone to stand still while they pingpong in the room around them.
cassandra - what begins as one extremely uncomfortable and unrequited crush fumbles right on through toward admiration and respect - sehren surprises cassandra with thoughtful questions and kinds words (even through the haze of drunkenness, right) that they lean on each other in pretty short order.
lace harding - when sehren’s not working directly with the inquisitor’s party she makes herself available to the inquisition as a scout - it gets her out of skyhold and keeps her better apprised of what the fuck is going on outside of the rather insular keep. she’s also surprisingly effective in the field, quick and subtle and observant. she works off and on with harding, and immediately decides that she’s the single best person in the inquisition.
kihm - one may commonly find her working closely with kihm in a cluttered corner of the herald’s rest working through everything from timing (”fast is one thing, flat is another.”) to the most efficient possible diet to maintain her physical needs. (”that would require approximately your body weight in protein DAILY to accomplish without turning into a twisted husk. or dying.” “hm.” “you’re sure i can’t interest you in a nice jar full of fire?”)
she’s pretty friendly with most people, tbh, but not close? with most people.
― a phobia your muse has:
fanaticism. belief is a strange, powerful, insane thing, and it scares the fuck out of her.
#sehren lavellan#trashchild#companion au#words words words#why are my tags like this idr any of them#i stuck to... canon people because i'm tired#and didn't want to make myself sad LOL

18. Give us one thing from your muse’s wishlist that you really want to write in a thread! 🖤
I don’t know about a wishlist...but I did my best. Thank you, anon!!! Under the cut, love!
Wren Blake
Probably her Nemesis ties. She has the scales tattooed on her back shoulders because of something that tragically happened in her past where a drunk driver walked away with a slap on the wrist after she had suffered a great loss in the process. Only to have the same man, a few years later, die of liver cancer because of overdrinking. To her, that’s justice, and it’s a bit where the Nemesis part really starts. She ends up giving justice to her abusive father by pulling the plug against doctor advice, and letting him die...and it gets buried a bit when she goes to Hope County, but honestly...it gets worse as the Holy War continues. John Seed really brings it out of her whenever she confesses little by little...and then she becomes the Judge of Eden’s Gate. She judges those who are worthy, whether justice should be swift or if it should be forgiving...but it’s all her personal view of said justice. You find that it’s not justice at all, it’s retribution, and her wrath will absolutely drive it when someone is unworthy. It’s why she has the Nemesis ties and not Themis. While yes, there are some similarities that Wren posses of both gods, Nemesis is the true symbolism. Even in her Judgement commission, where justice is supposed to be blinded...she has lace covering her eyes so she can see through (the aesthetic was definitely a plus), because she doesn’t give blind justice...her own views, wrath, and judgement is from her eyes. And I never get tired of talking about it, to be honest. It’s one of my favorite things about her. But it was big on her tattoo wishlist, so I’m gonna count it.
Whitney Seed
Her absolute drive to be something more. All her life, she was pretty much groomed into being the perfect, religious daughter Nancy always wanted, and so her marrying Joseph Seed played into that...therefore her becoming Mother of Eden’s Gate was just writing on the wall. But there’s a lot more to Whit than just being a trophy housewife that’s a good face for the Project, and she doesn’t get treated any better than how she’s perceived. She fully believes she deserves power, has the right to power, and can wield power easily, and she can. Her not being an official Herald is a slap to the face that’s added to a long list of reasons Joseph pays for his wrongs against her with his life. She wants to be treated, to be better than what she is now, because she deep down knows it’s true. Eventually, she absoltuely rises to the absolute queen she is, and kills Joseph. But it’s something that weighs on her until that moment happens.
Evune Lavellan
(Kinda jumping to a different fandom, bear with me) I would say that for her, its her view and passion of her people. Evune was born to a city elf that was pretty much a concubine or consort to a noble. Once the noble realized that her mother had fallen in love with a hunter from a Dalish clan, he killed them both and took her. So, Evune has meddled with the bard life, she’s learned to not be seen and to get secrets, and was pretty much a pet for the noble to show off like she was some animal on display. After his run in with the Red Jenny’s, she escapes and lives on the streets for awhile, helping thieves guilds and such before she’s able to be reunited with her father’s clan (therefore being taken in by Athera’s mother and father). So that being said, Evune is very passionate about her people and their beliefs, wanting the city elves to leave the cities, and join the Dalish where she fully believes that together, they can be stronger and at least have more freedom. That the city elves should want that freedom. She gets frustrated by it often, because she’s lived that life, and she doesn’t understand why anyone would want to stay in the alienages and slums of the city, where humans regularly make them victims.

4, 14, and 48
(I’ll pick Hallalin then, because he’s my main bean.)
4. how did they feel about being called “the herald of andraste”?
Hallalin really hates it, mostly because he only believes in the Elven gods, but another part of him kind of believes in the maker to some degree.
14. which demon is most frightening to them?
Despair demons. Because he and despair demons both share the power of ice and snow, they’re kind of on the same fighting level, it’s harder for him to kill them. But that’s not the main reason he fears them the most. When he was found by the river side as a baby, by the Halla herder of Clan Lavellan, a Despair demon had been summoned in a blood ritual with his blood, somehow it managed to track him down and try to posses him, even though he was just a helpless baby at the time. The members of clan lavellan that found him fought and defeated it, but it often haunts his dreams.
38. are there any insults they find to be especially offensive? (i.e. “knife ear”/”rabbit” for elves, “oxmen” for qunari, ect.)
Hallalin doesn’t care much for offensive nicknames, unless it’s something about his cold skin or his pale complexion.

I was tagged by @i-dont-even-like-elves for the 11 questions ask meme thingy! Thank you so much for tagging me!! :)
1) THE LAST TIME YOU WERE HAPPY, IT WAS BECAUSE YOU ___.
i was at a place called Lazy 5 Ranch with my mom and brother and we were having a great time feeding all of the animals (though having a giant cow shove its head into your car to try to steal your bucket of food is mildly terrifying .-. )
2) WHAT’S THE BEST (OR STRANGEST, OR MOST UNEXPECTED) COMPLIMENT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
I’m going to be really honest the one that i enjoyed the most was an anon message i got here on tumblr after posting a selfie (i think) and it just said “Your eyes remind me of true love pickles” to this day i don’t know exactly what that means or who sent it but i think about that a lot.
3) BASED ON THE TALENTS YOU CURRENTLY POSSES, ARE YOU A WARRIOR, ROGUE, MAGE, OR BARD (OR IF NONE, NAME ANOTHER CLASS)? WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE SKILL? YOUR LEAST IMPRESSIVE SKILL?
I’m a mage, probably favoring elemental magic and/or nature magic. Not sure what my signature would be....but i’d probably be known for accidentally setting people’s hair or clothes on fire when i’m super mad at them ^^” my least impressive skill would be that (because of my nature magic) animals love me...which is already pretty true like let me tell you last time i went to the zoo my ex accused me of being a disney princess because i had a butterfly land on me and not want to leave even when i shook my hand a little (i ended up having to get it to land on someone else), i got the alligators to come over to us so we could see them, the tiger was absolutely 100% talking to me and rubbing his face on the fence, i was petting a parrot and when i stopped and started walking away he threw an absolute fit, AND i had a wild lizard crawl up my leg to ride around on my shoulder for a few minutes....
4) WHAT’S THE SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF THE BEST NIGHT OF YOUR LIFE?
The one that comes to mind is “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas because it reminds me of a time in middle school that all of my friends and i went to a corn maze together and...i just have really fond memories of hanging out with all of them in middle school :’) we’re still friends of course but we don’t have as much time to hang out like we used to
5) MUST PROTECT AT ALL COSTS: ____
COLE, Izuku Midoriya, Yuri Katsuki, Josephine Montilyet, 707, literally everyone in Voltron, the raptor squad in Jurassic World, Anders, ALISTAIR
6) WELL, SHIT. VARRIC’S WRITING A BOOK ABOUT YOUR EXPLOITS. WHAT’S THE TITLE?
“Really....that’s it?” is the only thing that came to mind lol my life would hardly make for an interesting read but if anyone could make it interesting i suppose it would be Varric
7) WHAT’S AN OBSESSION YOU HONESTLY HOPE NEVER GOES AWAY?
Dragon Age, anime, animals, dinosaurs, SCIENCE
8) WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO IN YOUR RETIREMENT?
oh good gosh i have no idea i’m only 21....i mean if i retired right now i’d probably learn to make mods, refine my art, maybe start taking commissions? If i have the money when i retire i want to travel...i’m not about to let a little age stop me from seeing the world. Though ideally i’d like to travel while i’m young =/
9) WHO WAS YOUR FIRST CRUSH OR HERO? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THEM NOW?
My first crush that i can remember was probably James from Pokemon???
I still love James and I’m still weirdly attracted to him??
And my first hero who i looked up to and wanted to be like was Steve Irwin.
Steve Irwin is still really and truly what I aspire to be. To love life so much and be so excited about what you do and excited about the world around you? For me that’s the ideal. He respected animals and nature even the dangerous things and for me to grow up seeing that helped shape me into who i am today. I work at a vet’s office and my respect and understanding for the animals helps me get along with even some of the “mean” ones. I learned that respect from many people in my life but Steve Irwin was absolutely one of the greatest influences in helping me find that animals are my passion. :)
10) WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT OTHERS EXPECT YOU TO CARE ABOUT, BUT YOU SIMPLY DON’T?
hmmm....well every single time someone finds out i’m a vegan they think i support PETA or other preachy organizations and i absolutely don’t. PETA is awful but besides that i also don’t take part in that crazy veganism which involves policing what other people eat? I support animal rights but within reason. People are going to eat meat i just wish animals raised for meat or other products were treated more humanely. I also wish that workers in the food industry were treated better and paid more. I truly just want people to respect each other and the world around them. I’m a vegan for health reasons, you eat your bacon i literally don’t care if you eat three pounds of it in front of me (besides that i might worry about your health if you did that in one sitting)
that went a little off topic but I don’t care about PETA that was my original point ^^”
11) WHAT MYTH, FAIRY TALE, LEGEND, OR SUPERSTITION DO YOU MOST WISH WERE TRUE?
....does Harry Potter count because damn i want to go to Hogwarts
Ok so now i ask ten questions right? that is how this works?
1. What is your favorite dinosaur?
2. What kind of natural scenery appeals the most to you?
3. What smell (or smells) do you find comforting?
4. Do you collect anything?
5. What two characters would you want as parents and why?
6. What is one physical feature about yourself that you like?
7. What is one thing about yourself (personality-wise etc.) that you like?
8. If your soul/spirit was represented by a color, what color would it be/would you want it to be?
9. Tell me about That Fic/Comic in your head that you’ll probably never write
10. What’s your favorite book/movie of all time and why did it speak to you so much?
11. Tell me of a trope you don’t like, and one time you made an exception and actually enjoyed it in a work of fiction! That, or tell me about that one character that is not the type you usually like, and YET…
And I’ll tag...the first 11 people in my activity. Feel free to ignore this if you don’t want to fill it out! No pressure to do this!
@mmesnappysnips @alleiradayne @evillyte @star--nymph @please-pet-the-dread-wolf @queerantivan @empresstress13 @dragenage @aromagebloom @miriani-lavellan @irlaimsaaralath @elevanetheirin and @i-dont-even-like-elves (if you’d like to do this again)
Thanks again for the tag! :)

just gonna repeat it here (sorry lol). im on the bandwagon that andraste allowed mythal to posses her. and that mythal/andraste were either solas’ lover, or strictly her friend. her husband grew too jealous of them, spending time together saving the world (platonic), so he killed her. (i like to call him the Ross Geller of this series)
mythal = andraste = flemeth = all their husbands who turned everyone against them, and then killed.
common denominator = lover/friend (solas or otherwise)
lavellan = someone put her on in this realm to ease his heart and possibly break solas’ cycle of secrecy, deception, and destruction. so he doesn't go through this again & alone mayhap? or do something worse.
(i may have gotten some lore wrong here, just fyi)
*twitches. feels a da4 itch coming on real strong*
i could be overthinking this a lot but

newfragile yellows [43]
“I know you, Wolf,” Solas does not freeze. Freezing would be an admission. Instead he looks up and meets Lavellan’s eyes.
She is a strong woman. A clever woman. A proud woman. A dangerous woman.
Solas has been four out of five of these things before. That particular combination does not go well together. It can be worn beautifully, for a time, but inevitably it will bring ruin onto itself.
“Pardon?”
Lavellan raises a thin brow, crossing her legs as she leans back on her perch. He recognizes her too well, too much; from the way she sits on the low stone wall that rises next to the hut he’s claimed as his own to the way her face moves, she is too familiar.
He wonders if this is youth or history at work. Perhaps it is both.
“I said, I know you,” Lavellan repeats slowly in the strange and half-recognizable puzzle of elven that the elves of the Dales have cobbled together out of remnants long past.
For all that their basic premises are wrong, Solas admits that he admires the tenacity with which they have built upon the bones of the old and made it their own.
“I know not what your faction is really called,” Lavellan says, “But I have learned to recognize their members. Your group has many would-be-spies among my people. Those spies and saboteurs have worked their way into my court to try and directly influence me no less than four times, I believe. I did not realize the Wolf’s people were working among the other powers of Thedas as well. Are you here to observe, or to shape? Both?”
“I do not know of what you mean.”
Lavellan’s gaze turns amused, a cat with a mouse between its young and violently playful paws. After a moment of examination, she appears to let him off the proverbial hook, turning her eyes onto the Breach itself.
“I recognize, too, this magic,” Lavellan says. “I would not say so in front of the shemlen - I barely escaped with my head attached. Is the mark of magic here not familiar, hahren?”
“You, Lavellan - leader of the Dales and Emerald Knights, most holy and exalted to the Free Elves - would refer to me as a hahren?”
“Why not?” Lavellan asks, still looking at the Breach. “You posses a certain level of knowledge and experience that I do not, you were able to heal me when no other could, and you guided me in sealing the rifts.”
“Knowledge you could have intuited on your own, given enough time to exercise that power,” Solas points out.
Lavellan laughs, “What a luxury! Time. You know this magic, do you not, hahren?”
She turns and looks at him, dark eyes dancing - the echo of his memory is so painful. It is like looking into a tarnished mirror.
“Yes,” He admits.
“Our secret, for now, agreed?” She says.
Solas dips his head down in agreement. This, at least, is something he finds reasonable.
-
“Is there a problem?” Lavellan doesn’t even give the poor herald a look as she takes her place at the door.
Leliana can’t help be just the smallest bit amused.
She imagines that it isn’t every day that one must announce the Commander of the Dales to the Empire of Orlais.
“No, Madame.”
Lavellan looks over then, “Madame?”
Her eyebrow slowly raises. For all that Lavellan is stubborn and refuses to give an inch, Leliana admits - she plays the game beautifully. It is a pleasure to watch.
It is always beautiful to watch a master at their craft - a master painter, a singer, a dancer, an orator.
Leliana imagines the sour face the man must make underneath his mask when he is forced to say the words.
“Most holy.”
Lavellan’s eyes slowly flutter, a satisfied beast, before turning forward again. Her voice lowers, crouches, slithers.
“You will announce me in full. I will know if you leave anything out. I will return.”
And she walks.
Perhaps, Leliana thinks as she follows the woman into the now silent grand ballroom, they were wrong in thinking they had to restrain Lavellan. Perhaps, what the Orlesian court needs is not another player, but a new game master.
If they will not cooperate with each other and unify to fight the obvious threat of their own free will, perhaps they will cooperate when forced to by a stronger one.
As Solas would put it, an indomitable one.
What happens when the immovable object of the Orlesian habit is met with the unstoppable force of the reigning power of the Dales?
Based on previous encounters between the two nations, Leliana knows where to put her money. And her life.
Lavellan sweeps into the ballroom with all the grace of a serpent among frozen mice, a wyvern return to the water, and a dragon gliding through the sky.
“Any bets as to how this goes?” Leliana asks Josephine, softly.
“Well,” Josephine answers, sounding reluctantly impressed.
The Inquisition’s reputation will only become more controversial after this, but Leliana imagines that it would be worth it.
“Celene,” Lavelan’s voice softly echoes out through the silent room.
(“I will not bow to someone who is my equal, and debatably my inferior,” Lavellan says, peacefully watching the scenery through the carriage window. “If she likes, she may bow. But if she wants me to lower my head to her she will have to dream it.”)
“Greetings neighbor,” Lavellan continues, unperturbed as she rises right back up the stairs, walking past dumbfounded nobles and guards a like to stand directly in front of the Empress of Orlais.
Compared to the washed out woman in blue and gold, Lavellan in her well trimmed furs and silk looks like an undeniable pillar of power.
Lavellan stands close to Celene, teeth bared, arms behind her back. Lavellan leans in, “I believe our meeting is long overdue. And where is the ever charming Briala?”
“Most holy,” Lavellan doesn’t turn even as Briala steps out of the crowd, “Thank you for coming.”
Lavellan leans away from Celene but doesn’t look away even as she leans on the railing. “Thank you for bringing my attention to this little fete, Briala. Such a lovely diversion. I look forward to watching how this all plays out. Drinks?”
-
“Ambassador,” Lavellan nods, passing by the straight backed templars with the sort of impunity Josephine can only imagine comes from knowledge and power beyond years. Most mages would at least give the templars a second glance.
Lavellan, most holy of the Dalish, is not most mages.
“Your Majesty,” Josephine moves to stand but Lavellan waves her hand.
“We are going to be working together for some time, Ambassador. I am going to have to insist that certain formalities be waved. Lavellan is fine, may I?”
“Of course,” Josephine turns her open hand towards a seat, “I am afraid that my offices are not quite as pleasing as most embassies would be.”
“Lack of comfort can be made up for with good and reasonable company,” Lavellan replies. She does not seem quite as intimidating as the others would describe her, Josephine admits. “I have heard of your talents, Lady Montilyet. My ambassadors speak highly of you, though I admit a certain level of disappointment that our meeting was not from you coming for a visit. Antiva is such a good friend of the Dales.”
“We appreciate all that you do for us,” Josephine says, “Does our current ambassador not suit your tastes?”
“Not at all,” Lavellan laughs, “She does quite well - as well as anyone does, I suppose. Rest assured, Lady Montilyet. Antiva is ever in our good graces; though the proposals for marriage remain - as ever, charming, at best.”
“I admit, they are mostly a jest at this point,” Josephine says.
“I should hope so,” Lavellan muses, resting her head on her fist as she smiles at Josephine, “Do you think you would ever visit me - or would you ever have visited me?”
“Perhaps, I do want to travel,” Josephine answers, “Presuming that we survive this.”
“You would be most welcome. We are so fond of our ambassadors. We have so few, you know,” Lavellan laughs. “We treasure them.”
“The Qun is one of the few, yes?” Josephine asks. She can’t help but be curious. “If you don’t mind me asking - how does that work?”
Lavellan hums, “Well. Surprisingly. The Qun and I, specifically, have a very delicate understanding. We respect each other. Neither of us like Tevinter, and while we do not like each other’s ideas so much, we can respect each other’s history and power enough to stay away. The Qun dislikes our religion and magic, but appreciates that we keep to our word and our borders. We, in turn, scorn their disregard for the spirit of the world and military vigilance, but we agree in the threat of magic unwatched. And we both have similar cultural choices - the raising of our children for certain roles, the organization of our military and division of governing branches.”
“But the Qun and your kingdom have only begun the exchange of ambassadors recently,” Josephine says, “These similarities have long existed past then.”
Lavellan hums, “As I said, the Qun and I have made certain arrangements.”
“You’ve gone to Par Vollen?”
“No,” Lavellan raises an eyebrow, “At the time I could not leave the borders of the Dales. I requested that Par Vollen come to me. We made our arrangement then and have been polite allies ever since.”
Josephine is fully aware of the very dangerous thread of knowledge that’s been hung before her.
“Then it is true?” Josephine asks. “The Qun assisted in your coup?”
Lavellan laughs, everything the rumors have ever said she was, “It was no coup, Ambassador. That would imply a certain type of force that simply was not used. In any case, the two of us are happy with our little arrangement. The Qun fights Tevinter from the outside, we fight it from within.”
“From within?”
Lavellan winks, “Games are not only for Orlesians, Ambassador. When this is over come stay with me for a time. You could pick up a few tricks.”
