Bryan Kneef. Partner at STR Laurie Head of the litigation department. Asshole extraordinaire. He ruled the roost with an iron fist. Bryan Kneef was notorious for being so rude to assistants that he now had a rotation of 5 assistants who work for him a week or two at a time, because the firm can't keep anyone on with him full time. He was known to scream, shout, berate, belittle, and reduce his legal assistants and paralegals to tears on a daily basis. Working for him involved annual "stress leave" as well as regular vacation and sick days. The only reason Bryan was still around, was that he brought in a lot of revenue. In the end, money talks, bullshit walks.
It was your turn on deck for Bryan and you were busy burning the midnight oil. You rubbed your face in exhaustion. You were nearly done with the pleading you were working on. You grabbed your coffee, which had grown cold and chugged it back. Your eyes glazed over as you inserted page numbers at the bottom of the document. A few hours of sleep would be good, you had reasoned, and then you’d proofread and finalize. Bryan was not due until later that morning, as he had court in the morning.
When you arrived home, you were so exhausted that you just collapsed in bed, still wearing your work clothes. Later that morning, having gotten some sleep, you showered and got ready to go into the office. Chicago was known as ‘The Windy City’ for reasons similar to what was happening past your window. The wind howled something fierce and there was a flash of lightning against the cold, grey sky. You tucked the bottom of your pants into your rainboots and made your way downstairs from your apartment.
In the short time of your descent, the sky had opened up, unleashing buckets of rain onto the streets. You opened your umbrella and hurried along until you arrived at the train station.
The elevator signaled its arrival and you stepped off, entering the floor. Despite your best efforts, you looked like a wet dog, thanks to the wind and rain. You happened to catch your appearance along a mirrored wall and cringed at the sight of your mascara running down your cheeks.
The sight of Bryan at your desk made you slow your pace. ‘Shit. Why is he here?’
“Good morning Mr. Kneef.”
“There is nothing good about this morning and do you want to know why?” The look on Bryan’s face was stony. The slight flare of his nose, indicated the anger toiling underneath.
You swallowed hard, your mouth dry. “Why is that?” You wanted to sound confident, but you barely managed a whisper.
Your colleagues - the ones who had arrived early - peered from over their screens, their eyes darting between you and Bryan, bracing themselves for impact. And it was in front of them you incurred Bryan’s wrath.
“You stipulated a motion to postpone the Suarez case. And like a fucking idiot, you assumed that because it was stipulated, there would be no way for it to be denied. Except it was! You took it off my calendar. Opposing counsel must have checked the docket at the fucking crack of dawn and dragged the client out of bed!! We failed to appear and lost the fucking hearing! You not only made me look a fucking idiot, you have also now sullied the reputation of this firm. You better pray we don’t get sued for malpractice!”
You stared at Bryan, stunned. You wracked your brain - were you even on the Suarez case? Shit - you were and the horror of the realization of your epic mistake washed over your face. Fuck! You opened your mouth to say something-anything-but Bryan interrupted you.
“Save it; pack your shit. You’re fired.”
Bryan stalked off and by the time he was gone, you realized you were shaking. Your colleague and close friend, Marissa rushed over to check on you. “C’mon, I will help you pack your things and take you home. You shouldn’t be alone right now.”

Bryan marched into his office, slamming the door behind him. His office was like every other stereotypical big-wig lawyer would have: a massive corner office, with floor to ceiling windows, which offered an expansive view of Lake Michigan. The walls were painted a dark charcoal and included built-in bookcases filled to the brim with all sorts of legal texts. It was spacious and well-lit. In the middle was a glass coffee table, flanked by a large black leather couch and two matching arm chairs.
He made a beeline for his bar cart. He didn’t give a shit if it was 7am - he poured himself a drink and shot it back, before quickly refilling it and repeating the action.
Feeling restless, he paced the length of his office repeatedly. He mulled over what he would say to the client and to his own boss. This was a major fuckup. Feeling frustrated, he threw his tumbler at the wall, the glass shattering into a million little pieces.
“Fuck!” Bryan shouted. He marched back to the bar cart and poured himself another drink, before then tossing that glass at the wall itself.
A voice came over the intercom located by his desk. “Bryan - I heard what occurred and what happened with Ms. Y/L/N. Before you destroy any more of my firm, you will see yourself out.”
Bryan stormed to his desk and grabbed the phone. “You can’t fire me; I’m a partner and the other partners would need to vote.”
Bryan’s boss, Gavin Firth, explained that he was to go home and blow whatever steam off as the rest of the firm did damage control. Bryan sneered in response - he hated being sidelined more than anything. He did as told - grabbing his cellphone and having one of the many secretaries order him a car.

You left the office feeling like shit. Okay so you did recall you were on the Suarez matter. Yes, you did fuck up - it was indeed a major fuck up. Bryan’s wrath left you feeling minuscule. It was as if every bad thing you ever thought of yourself was brought to light and used against you. Thunder rumbled overhead, warning of another storm. You didn’t even bother to open the umbrella, choosing the rain to come over you - to any bystander, they wouldn’t be able to tell that you were crying due to the rivulets coming down your face.
You finally made it back to your apartment. You put your box on the floor and peeled off your clothes, layer by layer, tossing them into wet heaps on the floor. ‘To deal with later.’ You thought to yourself.
You dried off and changed into sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt. You piled your hair into a makeshift bun and made way to the bathroom to scrub your face. After the last of the ruined makeup was gone, you made way to the kitchen and grabbed the half bottle of Riesling. You didn’t bother to grab a glass and made way back to bed where you decided to drink and sleep the rest of this horrible, no good day away.

Bryan hurried out of the elevator and into the lobby, feeling agitated. He did not see how wet the floor was nor did he see the “caution/wet floor” sign.
He felt his feet fly out from under him and his heart dropped into his stomach as he landed hard on the floor. He felt his phone fly out from his hand and vaguely heard the sound of his phone clattering against the marble floor. Gravity pulled him down to the ground and there was a sharp pain at the back of his head as it made contact.
Bryan’s view above him was of the lobby’s ceiling. The world spun around him and his last thought was how he was going to sue the shit out of the building’s management.
And then all faded to black.
