~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was old now. His bones creaked like the floorboards of the museum as he walked through it. He could still walk despite his age and despite his injuries he got in the war. The museum hadn't told him anything about the pictures just that he showed up in a few. This of course stirred his curiosity of what the pictures showed. Who had taken them? Maybe they had been taken after the war during cleanup. His musing was cut short with the arrival of a man.
"Ah, Mr. Boyce welcome! We were hoping you could make it," Boyce blinked as he processed the words "It's nice to be here. Please call me Ed. Mr. Boyce is to formal for a guy like me," The museum curator was a stout man with a slightly pointed nose and square glasses. His hair was black and curly and the tweed suit he wore was neatly pressed. Boyce smiled 'He takes pride in his job' the thought was quick as the man continued speaking. "I'm Lawrence, Ed we actually had a special reason for asking you to come today," Boyce raised a eyebrow. "What would that be Lawrence?" Lawrence smiled at him. "Well, today we have a group of kids that are looking around the museum, We were hoping you could tell them some stories from the war. Good ones of course, and if you recognize the photos...Maybe you could tell the kids those stories. You seemed close to the people in them," Boyce nodded along to Lawrence's rambling. "Of course I would like to. Somebody needs to pass on these old stories to the younger kids," Lawrence's green eyes lit up at the agreement. "Well the photos are this way please follow!" Lawrence scurried off before remembering Boyce was older. He slowed down he talked about the museum as he went how many veterans funded the place. However none visited nearly as much as Boyce. He was only half listening as he looked at the familiar weapons and symbols. Lawrence was a new curator that talked a little too much but Boyce didn't mind. It was a familiar feeling to listen to someone ramble. Boyce stopped short when he saw the new photos "I thought that camera was missing," It was the first thing he said as he looked at photos of the operation he went on.
"Someone named Paul from the village of Cielblanc donated it," Boyce laughed as he walked towards a photo. It was Tibbet handing a stick of gum to a small boy with a baseball glove and a baseball. "Not someone that kid there," Boyce raised a bony finger to the photo pointing it at the kid. "That's Paul. God he was so young then," "So you do know the photos? Do you know who took them? We never found that out," Boyce nodded "I know everyone in the photos and the stories. As for who took them well that was Morton Chase... He never got the chance to see any of his photos but when I see him again I'll tell him... They were the greatest photos of the war I've ever seen," A small smile had settled on his mouth.
He studied the photos when the scuffling of tiny feet could be heard. Boyce turned and was faced with a group of kids staring at him some in wonder others looked confused. "Okay children. We are going to hear some stories from the war from Mr. Boyce please be respectful and listen," He looked at the teacher a young woman not yet thirty. She has a gentle and graceful way about her it struck him then that if the war hadn't hit then maybe that's how (y/n) would have looked. Gentle and innocent instead of someone who had seen horrors no lady should see and witnessed the deaths of her friends. Boyce shook his head. No the fire in her eyes as she moved gracefully across enemy territory would always be there.
He cleared his thoughts as he sat down in a chair "Any stories you kids want to here?" A small boy raised his hand. "Can we know who that is?" He pointed at a photo. Boyce had to turn to see it but it was (y/n) staring out a window in Chloe's attic. "That's (y/n). She was the toughest gal we knew. Tibbet always said 'y'know she may not be a soldier but she's scarier than any of us'" Boyce laughed a little an inside joke that now only held a special meaning to him. "She was beautiful and a nurse. No one knows how she got on the same operation we did. It wasn't anyplace for a woman. But she was there and even with our airplane being blown up she still jumped and parachuted with the same conviction as someone who'd done it a million times. Jacob even thought that she had. She showed no fear when she jumped even though it was one of the scariest things in the world. However the important thing is we flirted with her a lot. I mean she was beautiful and tough? You'd be crazy not to. But that's when we found out that she was married. We should have guessed it but she never gave any indication but we also didnt know her last name. I remember it like it was yesterday,"
*************************************************
Boyce looked towards the click noise he heard. (Y/n) had turned from the window to look at Chase swatting her hand at him with a smile. "Stop taking pictures of me pretty boy," Chase laughed quietly. It was a comforting sound to hear in the middle of war. Even hours before they were going to take down the church. "Well doll you're so gorgeous he just can't help it. I'd take photos of you as well if I had a camera," she sighed and looked at Tibbet. "How many times do I have to show you guys I'm uninterested before you get the hint that I'm spoken for?" Ford choked on the water he was drinking. "You're taken?" She laughed. While she was Chase had snapped another picture causing her giggling to cease to give him a half-hearted glare. She turned her attention back to the others "Of course I am! Gosh you guys are so stupid. I mean if you thought I was hot why would you not assume I was spoken for?"
"That's a valid point. But are we talking spoken for as in possible chance in the future for me or like not a chance in hell," She sighed with a light smile. She turned and reached into one of the pockets of her vest. She pulled out a small box that she opened and slid a small silver ring onto her finger. "Spoken for as in not a chance in hell," Tibbet let out a shocked laugh "Well shit doll who managed to tie you down? Or can we find out from your last name that we were never told," she rolled her eyes "You were told you just didnt listen," She smirked "alright doll then who are you really?"
She looked at Chase and smiled "secrets out," he said with a half smile. "Guess it is," she responded looking back at Tibbet "Nurse Chase at your service," All the guys froze "Hang on. You're telling me Morton Chase. This guy with the stupid camera. Got married to you. The most beautiful nurse I've ever seen," she nodded as Chase took her hand "yeah that's exactly what I'm saying," Her and Chase shared a gentle smile and Boyce could see from his spot how in love they were.
*************************************************
"What happened to them Mr. Boyce?" He was pulled from his memory by a small girls voice. He looked at her "Tragedy. Though I guess we should have known. It was a war after all," He was pulled back into his memories as he began speaking.
*************************************************
They all heard the gunshots before they heard Chase's voice. (Y/n) jumped up from her spot next to Rosenfeld and ran upstairs. Tibbet on her heels "doll slow down!" They all raced up the stairs letting Boyce tackle Captain Wafner. They watched (y/n) slide across the floor a little bit towards Chase. "Hey hun I'm here," she grabbed his hand. She looked at here "someone come over here and put pressure on the wounds!" Rosenfeld moved first he went across from her and pressed down. Tibbet and Chloe followed putting pressure across the wounds. "I'm not gonna die right? I can't die...I can't leave you alone," she shook her head "no no...you won't leave me alone I promise," they could see the tears in her eyes. All of them knew she was lying but kept quiet for his sake. "Hey Rosenfeld," Chase's voice got quieter as he turned his head. "What is it?" Rosenfeld responded. His voice was shaky but he did his best to keep it even. "I'm getting pretty tired so while I'm sleeping can you protect (y/n) for me? I promise I'll wake up soon so you don't have to stay up all night," Rosenfeld nodded no longer trusting his words "Of course I will...Morton. I promise I'll keep her safe for you," He nodded "Thanks Jacob. (Y/n)...I love you. I'll talk to you when I wake up okay?" She smiled.
"Okay. I'll be waiting," she smiled "Oh, and Morton...l love you too," Chase smiled back "good," Chase stopped wheezing after that he'd gone quiet and still. Tears ran down (y/n)'s face causing clean tracks on her (s/c) skin. Boyce couldn't stand the tears so he took the syringe he got earlier and stabbed it into Chase pushing down on the plunger with more force than neccessary. He threw the empty syringe aside "Come on Boyce...He's gone," Ford said it and now that someone had said it (y/n) had started sobbing quietly. Rosenfeld moved over to her helping her slowly stand and moving her gently away. She had latched on like a lifeline burying her face into his chest. Rosenfeld stumbled from the force but he recovered and began gently combing his hands through her (h/c) hair. He whispered things the others couldn't hear keeping her quiet while she mourned her lost love. Then all the sudden Chase sat up his breathing still rusty but better than it was before. (Y/n) gasped in shock and horror gripping Rosenfeld tighter. She stood behind him slightly "Jacob...," she whispered in the silence. Rosenfeld didn't respond he just gripped (y/n)'s hand a silent oath that he would protect her.
"Hey Chase...how ya feelin?" Ford asked the question. "Can I have some water?" Boyce handed him his water canister to which they watched him chug it down. "My head hurts a little but I'm fine otherwise," his hand unknowingly crushed the metal canister "That's weird," he said when he looked at it. Tibbet quietly said "add it to the list," as he watched. Chase surveyed the room spoting Rosenfeld. "Hey Jacob I'm awake now. You don't have to protect (y/n) for me anymore!" He said it like it was a good thing but Ford once again caught his attention.
"Chase, can you uh...can you stand?" Chase looked at him "I think so," and just like that Chase stood. Ford looked at Wafner who Tibbet held in place "what the hell is this?" Wafner laughed "Hitler wants a thousand year reich but a thousand year reich requires thousand year soldiers," "is it hot in here to everyone else? It's super hot to me," Chase had stripped himself of layers until he was in his grey tank top. He held his head "guys my head really hurts," they watched him stumble towards the wooden post in the room bashing his head against it which cracked it but it did not break. (Y/n) had let out a tiny shriek and clung tighter to Rosenfeld. Staring at Chase in horror he faced the other way and slammed his head backwards into the post. His bones jutted tightly against his skin not breaking the surface but getting far too close to it. His head was bent farther backwards than any humans should go he snapped his head forward and suddenly his head was compressed against his neck making him look awkward.
Chase looked at his arm black veins stood out against his skin. He turned towards Boyce grabbing him by the neck and hoisting him up. "What did you do to me!?" Boyce looked around he saw (y/n) behind Rosenfeld looking terrified but who could blame her. They all looked scared "Morton...," she said it loud enough that he let go of Boyce and turned towards her. He took a step in that direction before Rosenfeld got in his line of sight one hand held up towards (y/n). "Jacob? You don't need to protect her anymore. I'm awake now,"
Jacob shook his head "she needs protection from you," Chase shook his head quickly they all flinched as they heard his neck snap at each turn. (Y/n) hid her face in Rosenfeld's back as shots rang out. Ford had shot Chase. He fell backwards as Rosenfeld turned around and hugged (y/n) hushing her. They then heard wheezing breath when the looked Chase stood there bullet holes all over him. "Oh you've got to be shitting me," Ford said before anyone could do anything Boyce slammed his rifle into Chase's head knocking him down before he bashed his head in. Chase hadn't gotten up again after that.
*************************************************
Boyce had elected not to tell the kids about the second half of the story only about the first time Chase had died. One girl raised her hand "Did her and um Rosefield get married?" Boyce smiled "Rosenfeld. No they didnt but (y/n) had a son Lewis Morton Chase. Jacob helped raised him along with me and Tibbet. He was our group's son. Though I think everyone thought she was married to Jacob even her own son," A little boy suddenly smiled and got up "That's my dads name!" Boyce laughed "really what's yours?" "Jacob Edward Chase! Daddy told me I was named after his dad and uncle!" Boyce smiled "Well I guess I'm that uncle then Jacob,"
Boyce told the kids more stories about (y/n), Chase, Tibbet, Ford, and Rosenfeld kids were being picked up by parents one by one some states to hear some tales others just left. Afterwards Boyce has seen Lewis again and said good bye to Jacob promising to visit for more stories next Sunday. Boyce held a bouquet of (f/f) to his chest in his other hand he held an old Chicago Cubs baseball card. He stood in front of the two graves a gentle smile on his face. "Cant believe they didnt bury Tibbet near you too but I guess he did die before you. I saw Lewis today he's grown so much...He looks a lot like Morton but with that same graceful edge you had (y/n). Oh, and his son is named after you Jacob. For his dad is what the kid said I guess you did your job huh? You protected (y/n) till the end. You kept your promise to Morton and extended it to her son...I guess he was yours as well since Morton was gone but you also never tried to be his father. It happened though," Boyce smiled "Anyway I brought some flowers for you (y/n), your favorite like always and for you Jacob I brought a Cubs card...Some kids reminded me of our adventures and I remember you kept one in the netting around your helmet. So I figured I'd bring one for you instead of flower since well...It's weird to bring your best bud flowers or so you said when we went to visit Tibbet. I hope all you guys are having fun together and I'll see you guys one day,"
___________________________________________
Today was the day. Boyce felt it in the air, the world seemed okay like if he was gone the world would still spin Lewis would be fine and so would his son Jacob. They knew his stories they would tell them and they wouldn't be forgotten. Boyce had spent the day with Lewis and Jacob telling them the final stories. He donated the rest of his money to the museum and a few charities he visited the graves one last time it was night now as he made it home. Sleep came quickly to him after that.
Warm sunlight graced his skin waking him slowly. He felt light like he could race the fastest animal in the world. When he opened his eyes he was in a field he saw a village close by. Kids running around and playing adults chatting he even saw some people in uniforms when he looked down he saw his outfit was his old uniform only it looked brand new. He scurried to a near by lake looking in he saw his reflection. He was young again like he was in the war "Hey Boyce!" He turned at the voice letting his eyes focus on the figure walking towards him "Tibbet?" It was a quiet whisper on the wind but Tibbet smiled "Man you recognized me from there?" He walked closer. He wore the uniform but with out the vest it also looked brand new he was smirking chewing his gum looking young as well. "Where are we?" Boyce questioned "Well how could you not know? We're in Cielblanc!" Tibbet chuckled like it was obvious. He held out a hand "let's go the others are waiting," Boyce took it and hoisted himself up. He dusted off his pants and followed Tibbet towards the village. It was different than he remembered more lively and beautiful but then he supposed the last time he'd seen it he was taking out Nazis who had overrun the town. He heard joyful laughter and when Tibbet and him turned the corner he saw them.
Chase stood in his grey tanktop dog tags resting on top his army issue pants and boots he looked like he used to before he died. He was smiling one arm was thrown around Rosenfeld's waist in an awkward side hug. Rosenfeld stood straighter he didnt wear the uniform just the long sleeve blue shirt and pants they'd given him when he was rescued from the church. It like everything else looked new and young again like time hadn't passed. Like no one had died like it was a new life for them. He saw Ford standing there with Dawson all of them looking like the war hadn't happened like they just met in life. He saw Chloe running towards them and following behind her was (y/n). The outfit she wore was a modified nurse's uniform. It was green like their uniforms it was still a dress but under the skirt she wore the same green pants and black army boots. She had ditched the vest and her medic helmet her (h/c) hair had a slight wave towards it like a breeze was permanently stuck in it. When she got close enough she passed Chloe hugging everyone. She paused a tad longer on Chase and when she was done she went back to his side leaning against him with a smile. He could see them holding hands from here when Tibbet decided to speak up "Hey doll thought you were gonna say hi to me!" Everyone turned (y/n)'s face lit up "Tibbet! I didnt know you were there! Who's that with you?" He walked forward "Its me...Boyce," "Well I'll be damned you're here already? Guess (y/n) and Rosenfeld won the bet," Ford smirked "You had a bet on when I'd die?" Everyone looked at eachother and nodded "yeah (y/n) and I said you wouldnt be far behind us," Rosenfeld gave a gentle smile and (y/n) hugged Boyce. "I'm so glad you're here! You can tell us all about what happened after we died!" Tibbet took his place beside Ford so all of them were in a neat little circle.
"Well, I suppose I should begin with this," He looked at Chase who had an arm around (y/n)'s shoulder holding her as close as he could smiling. "Chase," Chase looked at him "yeah?" He paused before smiling "Your photos of the war were the greatest I've ever seen,"
Episode 094 - Chick Lit Romance
This month we’re reading the genre of Chick Lit Romance. Does it exist and if so, what should it be called? Plus: The poor portrayal of library jobs in fiction, not being able to connect with people in novels who are desperate to get married, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), World of Warcraft romances, post-feminist fiction, picking books based on the cover, and more!
(Our apologies for use of the word "real" in relation to biological families in this episode. Adopted families are real families too.)
"Laura was, is, a lawyer, although when I met her she was a different kind of lawyer to the one she is now: then, she worked for a legal aid firm (hence, I guess, the clubbing and the black leather motorcycle jacket). Now, she works for a City law firm (hence, I guess, the restaurants and the expensive suits and the disappearance of the spiky haircut and a previously unrevealed taste for weary sarcasm) not because she underwent any kind of political conversation, but because she was made redundant and couldn't find any legal aid work.”
Humanities is Cultivating Dynamic Relationships in the College of Arts and Sciences
Universities exist not only to convey knowledge, but also to engender new knowledge through faculty research and creative endeavor. The scholarly, artistic and public accomplishments of faculty in the Humanities at Fairfield are remarkable for a university of our size and scope, and many of them reflect our commitment to undergraduate research and student-faculty collaboration. Here are just a few of our recent highlights:
In September 2018, at Mystic Seaport Museum, the Humanities Institute hosted a weekend-long, public symposium on the cultural, historical and ecological importance of the sea and coastlines in southern New England. The event brought together 10 community organizations with regional and international scholars and local community members. To honor the legacy of the late Professor of Classical Studies Vincent Rosivach, students Alec Lurie and Olivia McEvoy ('19) are producing the "Vincent J Rosivach Register of Slaves in Fairfield, Connecticut (1639-1820)," which Rosivach began during his research into slavery in Fairfield, to be published in the DiMenna-Nyselius library's Digital Commons.
In Classical Studies, Professor Giovanni Ruffini (also of the History department) published the book Life in an Egyptian Village in Late Antiquity: Aphrodito Before and After the Islamic Conquest with Cambridge University Press (2018). In Philosophy, Professor Sara Brill co-edited the book Antiquities Beyond Humanism, forthcoming from Oxford University Press, and was invited to deliver the keynote address for the annual conference of the Ancient Philosophy Society in 2019. Associate Professor Kris Sealey won a $75,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to study the ethics of academic publishing practices, and Associate Professor Toby Svoboda published The Ethics of Climate Engineering: Solar Radiation Management and Non-Ideal Justice with Routledge Press (2017).
In Religious Studies, Professor Paul Lakeland was awarded the “The Best Book in Theology Published in 2017” by the College Theology Society for his book The Wounded Angel: Fiction and the Religious Imagination. Associate Professor Martin Nguyen published Modern Muslim Theology: Engaging God and the World with Faith and Imagination with Rowman & Littlefield (2019) and also received the 2018-19 Wabash Center Peer Mentoring Clusters Grant. Associate Professor John Slotemaker published the book Anselm of Canterbury and the Search for God (2018) with Lexington Books.
In English, students in Professor Betsy Bowen’s course “Literacy and Language” did collaborative archival research using the Library of Congress’s interviews with the last generation of enslaved Americans. It is part of a multi-year student/faculty project on literacy in which students are analyzing the 2,300 accounts to find information about slave literacy and schooling. Professor Bob Epstein published Chaucer’s Gifts: Exchange and Value in the Canterbury Tales with the University of Wales Press (2018), Associate Professor Johanna Garvey co-edited the book Madness in Black Women’s Diasporic Fictions: Aesthetics of Resistance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and Professor Elizabeth Petrino co-edited the book Lydia Sigourney: Critical Essays and Cultural Views (University of Massachusetts Press, 2018). Assistant Professor Matt Tullis published Running With Ghosts: A Memoir of Surviving Childhood Cancer (Sager Group, 2017), Associate Professor Sonya Huber published Pain Woman Takes your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System (University of Nebraska Press 2017), and Professor Carol Ann Davis’s essay collection The Nail in the Tree: On Art, Violence, and Parenting, is forthcoming from Tupelo Press in 2019. Also of note is that Professor Emily Orlando was named E. Gerald Corrigan Endowed Chair in the Humanities, recognizing her achievements in both scholarship and student mentoring.
In Modern Languages and Literatures, students are combining language majors with other majors and minors to create dynamic courses of study and career tracks. Lauren Jachimczyk (’18) is completing a double major in Chinese Studies and Finance, including a semester in The Beijing Center in China, and will work as an Analyst in Corporate Investment Banking at Deutsche Bank in NYC after graduation. Sarah Foley (’19), a double major in Spanish and Sociology who studied abroad in Madrid and worked as an interpreter with a community health project co-directed by the Egan School of Nursing and the Spanish program, will work for Oaktree Capital Management after graduation. In an especially exciting project, Spanish/English double major Maggie Smith (’17) has been collaborating for 2 years with Assistant Professor Sergio Adrada-Rafael to produce a new translation of the educational comic The Fate of Numantia: Aius, the slave, which will be published in both Spain and the U.S. Meanwhile, Professor Javier Campos completed a new book, El bailador de tango/ “Tango in Manhattan,” on the history of the Tango in El Río de la Plata. Assistant Professor of the Practice of Italian Sara Diaz co-edited and translated a bilingual edition of 17th century author Margherita Costa’s The Buffoons, A Ridiculous Comedy, published by the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies & Iter Press in 2018. The project includes contributions by student fellows whom Dr. Diaz mentored in the Humanities Institute’s Humanities Seminar. Professor Mary Ann Carolan also received a Tiro a Segno Fellowship at NYU for spring 2019.
In Visual and Performing Arts, Professor Philip Eliasoph is serving as Faculty Consultant and blogger for The New York Times “InEducation” platform; his students join in the process of blogging, engaging in a global conversation about the uses and abuses of our visual landscape. Professor Jo Yarrington’s installation “piecemeal/peacemeal” was invited by the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Guangzhou, China; Professor Katherine Schwab’s exhibition “An Archaeologist’s Eye: The Parthenon Drawings of Katherine A. Schwab” ran from January to May 2018 at The Parthenon in Nashville, TN; and Professor Laura Nashchaired a panel at the first ever interdisciplinary conference on Disco, at the University of Sussex, England. Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Patrick Brooks’ short film “Seen From Above” premiered at the 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival, Suzanne Chamlin had an NG Art Creative Residency in Eygalières, France (May 2018), and Visiting Assistant Professor Meryl O’Connor edited a documentary, Hollow Tree, that was selected as one of the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund and Stories of Change Grantees.
Certainly not least, the Department of History has been on an amazing pace in the production of new research and learning experiences. Assistant Professors Jennifer Adair and Silvia Marsans-Sakly each recently earned a prestigious NEH fellowship, Adair for her groundbreaking research on Argentina's democratization in the 1980s and Marsans-Sakly for her unprecedented study of the Tunisian revolt of 1864. Meanwhile, Professor Gavriel Rosenfeld published The Fourth Reich: The Specter of Nazism from World War II to the Present with prestigious Cambridge University Press (2019) and Associate Professor and chair Patricia Behre worked with the Humanities Institute and the Fairfield University Art Museum to bring to campus a breathtaking public exhibit of artist Robert Hirsch’s Ghosts: French Holocaust Children. And let’s not forget the captain of the ship: Professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Richard Greenwald’s book The Death of 9-5: Permanent Freelancers, Empty Offices and the New Way America Works is now under contract with Bloomsbury Press.
Overall, these are exciting and richly rewarding times in the Humanities. We are reaching new thresholds in the knowledge and expression of the human condition by cultivating the dynamic relationship between faculty scholarship, student achievement, and community partnership.
C'est la guerre : Camilla Cabello unfollow toutes les membres de Fifth Hamony
Voilà une très mauvaise nouvelle pour les fans de Fifth Harmony qui espéraient qu’il se reforme comme  ses débuts. Camilla Cabello a unfollow d’Instagram la page fan officielle ainsi que Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, Normani Kordei et Ally Brooke, les autres membres du groupe. Cette décision subite doit certainement être liée à l’interview du groupe accordé au média Billboard. Questionnés sur le départ de Camilla, les filles ont répondu "Disons que tout va mieux maintenant – il n'y a pas de secret. On ne peut pas changer les gens. On ne pourrait pas être plus heureuses. Je vais me coucher le soir en sachant que nous avons fait tout ce qui était en notre pouvoir en tant qu'amies, membres d'un groupe et en tant qu'êtres humains."Des propos qui ont certainement blessé l’ex-membre du groupe et qui justifierait cet acte. Pour rappel, après avoir remporté ensemble l’aventure X Factor au Royaume-Uni, les cinq chanteuses de Fifth Hamony ont cartonné dans les charts avec des titres tels que Work from home ou encore Worth It. Un succès qui n’a pas suffi à Camilla Cabello qui, elle, rêvait d’une carrière solo et n’a jamais cachée ne pas se sentir à sa place dans le groupe. Un mal-être qui l’a fait quitter le navire le 18 décembre 2016 pour se focaliser sur sa propre réussite.Au final, Camilla Cabello n’a pas perdu au change étant donné qu’elle a annoncé en mai dernier la sortie prochaine de son album solo qui devrait être composé de collaboration avec Charlie XCX, Pharell Williams ou en... What Sold at Zona Maco
There’s no question that the hundreds of collectors, dealers, and museum types who descended on Mexico City this week for a trio of art fairs have a terrific time enjoying the city’s world-class museums and restaurants. Whether they, alongside Mexican and regional collectors, can sustain the growth that the country’s art market has experienced in recent years, is up for debate.
ZⓢONAMACO (commonly written as Zona Maco), now in its 15th year, opened Wednesday afternoon with 170 dealers participating from 27 countries. But the atmosphere, even on opening night, was subdued, and many international dealers said sales were slow to nonexistent over the first few days of the fair, although some who had attended the fair in prior years said Mexican collectors tend to close over the weekend. On Thursday at the two satellite fairs, Material and Salón Acme, the enthusiasm and goodwill were palpable, even if sales weren’t necessarily through the roof.
Explanations varied as to why sales were slow at Zona Maco. Some cited politics, with Mexico’s upcoming elections this summer a cause for uncertainty, or the potential renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which could have a significant impact on Mexico’s economic relations with the United States. Others wondered whether the economic aftershocks of last September’s earthquake, which hit Mexico City during Zona Maco’s sister fair, Salón del Anticuario, and led to the cancellation of the city’s gallery weekend, were still being felt. Others said it was simply down to the fact that Mexican collectors like to take their time.
According to dealers, all of the fairs this week appeared to draw a growing number of international collectors, for whom Mexico City is an ever-more-tempting stop on the art circuit, especially in the thick of winter in North America and Europe. (Guadalajara, too, was reportedly bustling with international visitors the weekend before the fairs.) The city, which boasts a number of extraordinary museums and a strong set of galleries, art spaces such as Lulu and Biquini Wax EPS, and working artists, has also become a destination for museum groups.
“This is an opportunity to come down to Mexico City, have great food and drink some tequila, do some studio visits and visit beautiful museums,” said Alex Logsdail, director of Lisson Gallery. “I think it’s kind of a logical escape for a lot of people.”
The gallery sold multiple works from the fair preview, including an Anish Kapoor mirror work that had an asking price of £525,000. In addition to works by recognizable names like Tony Cragg and Daniel Buren, Logsdail brought artists who were new to the Mexican market, such as Laure Prouvost, Stanley Whitney, and Leon Polk Smith. He noted that the fair serves an important role for them in maintaining long-term relationships with collectors the gallery works with here, even though, he said, “they may or may not buy at the fair.”
At David Zwirner, early sales were also spotty, but director Veronique Ansorge said this was typical for Zona Maco.
“It’s not a fair where all the action is on the first day,” she said. Two works by Wolfgang Tillmans sold early: Easter (2012) for $100,000 and unlikely match (2017), for $35,000. A Josh Smith painting, The Whole Point (2017) and Sensual Power (2017), each for $75,000, also sold in the next few days. Ansorge said she had seen a few Brazilian and Colombian collectors at the fair, as well as West Coast U.S. collectors and a lot of art advisors.
Lauren Kelly, a director at New York’s Sean Kelly Gallery, was comfortable with the plodding sales pace, especially since Sean Kelly Gallery works with a number of Latin American artists and Conceptual artists, both of which are readily understood and appreciated by Mexican collectors, she said.
“It’s a much more pleasant experience because it seems like they’re really considering the works and how it fits into their collection, rather than just shopping,” Kelly said. “So while it may be slow at this fair, in the long run, we make a lot of good connections.” She had sold several works by Mexican artist Jose Dávila, currently the subject of a show at one of Mexico City’s premier galleries, Galería OMR. Among them was a larger mobile, Homage to the Square (2016), for $50,000, with a second, smaller one, on hold, and an Alexander Calder-inspired paper cutout for $45,000.
At Galerie Lelong & Co.’s booth, several works had sold, all of which were by women. A work by Nancy Spero, Nicaragua (1986), was placed with a U.S. museum, while a small, untitled 2014 painting by Etel Adnan and a new work, Buddens: Drapery and Wattle (2017), by Australian artist and photographer Rosemary Laing were sold to private collectors. “It’s always worth your while,” said Mary Sabbatino, vice-president and partner at the gallery, even if sales are slow, recalling that one of her “worst fairs ever” financially speaking had led to the appearance of one of her artists, Zilia Sánchez, in the Venice Biennale, because at that fair, a Sánchez work had caught the eye of Centre Pompidou chief curator Christine Macel.
Claire Bergeal, an associate director at Bortolami, said that Zona Maco was fruitful ground for fostering relationships with local institutions. The gallery showed a mini-survey of Chicago-based artist Barbara Kasten, who is in her early 80s, but who many visitors thought was a young artist, a phenomenon Bergeal attributed to the lively colors and vividness of Kasten’s prints. By Friday evening, they had sold six out of the fourteen works they brought to the fair, with prices ranging from $15,000 to $35,000. Among the sales was Kasten’s Architectural Site 7, July 14, 1986 (1986) which went for between $20,000 and $30,000. She also highlighted a recent series in which Kasten shoots pieces of fluorescent Plexiglass with exposed film, giving the prints a pinkish cast. Some of the works had gone to Americans and some to local collectors, Bergeal said.
Nikola Cernetic of Turin’s Luce Gallery was one of the few international gallerists who had a robust early stretch of sales, with the majority of his solo presentation by New York-based artist Derek Fordjour placed by Friday evening. Perhaps surprisingly, almost none went to Mexican collectors, possibly, Cernetic said, because the issue of race raised in the works (Fordjour’s images feature black figures, painted on a collage-like surface of newspaper and cardboard) may not resonate locally. Fordjour’s work had been acquired last year by the Dallas Museum of Art from the Dallas Art Fair and he is currently finishing a residency at New York’s Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling. Six of the smaller works from the artist’s 2018 “Portrait Player” series sold for $9,000 each (two from in the booth and four that were not hung in the booth), while two of the larger ones, Six Count and Roll Tide Turn, sold for $18,000 each.
The international dealers who fared well tended to arrive with a number of relationships already in place. “You need some sort of inside track,” said Raymond Bulman, director of New York’s The Hole, which was participating for the first time at Zona Maco. “The Mexican collectors we knew from New York, they introduced us to a lot of other people here, and that has made it pretty good for us,” he said, despite the late arrival of their crate of paintings. For opening night, they had been able to show only one painting, A Breakthrough at Brunch (2018) by Alex Gardner, which went within the first hour to a Mexican collector. Bertram, a Pomeranian who frequently travels to fairs with The Hole’s owner Kathy Grayson, had, however, made it to Mexico intact and was the picture of nonchalance, splayed out on a table alongside business cards and a small catalog from a recent show.
Since the crate’s arrival, they sold two additional works, En rang d’Onion (2017) by Julie Curtiss and BREAKING: Pasadena Man’s Brave Response To Waitress’ Facebook Post Proves He Is 1000% Not Complicit In Rape Culture! And, 30 Photos of Real Avocado Toast You Will Never Not Believe Haven’t Been Photoshopped (Must Be 21+ To View) (2018) by Morgan Blair. All were around $10,000 and Bulman said that, as of Saturday, they only had two paintings left for sale.
“We should have brought more!” said Grayson.
Ian Rosenfeld, director of London’s Rosenfeld Porcini, said the fair seemed more sparsely attended than last year’s, when he attended for the first time, and said he had the general impression from his peers that sales were less than robust. Rafael Parra of Spanish gallery Javier López & Fer Francés said he felt the upcoming elections may be causing some people to worry, compounded by the potential for the value of the peso to drop relative to the dollar; the currency has stabilized since the beginning of the year at around 18 pesos to one U.S. dollar, down from close to 20 in December. He said they had sold some small works by Eduardo Sarabia for $15,000 to $20,000 but “nothing major.”
Teófilo Cohen of Mexico City gallery Proyectos Monclova, on the other hand, observed an increase in international visitors this year. Cohen said he’d met collectors from Belgium, France, New York, Chicago, and Canada. But, he said, “We’re local, so we sell well.” He said works by Eduardo Terrazas, Tercerunquinto, Chantal Peñalosa, and Gabriel de la Mora had all sold, with prices ranging from $2,500 for Peñalosa’s work to up to around $50,000 for de la Mora’s eye-catching arrangements of neon Post-It notes. The three works from 2017 by de la Mora had sold by Friday night.
Across the board, Mexican galleries seemed to be outselling their international peers.
Cristobal Riestra, a partner at Galería OMR, one of Mexico City’s most established galleries, said works by Jose Dávila had been selling well both from their current show at the gallery and at the fair. Everything they put out by Gabriel Rico, a young Guadalajara artist whose star is rising, also sold. Though Riestra, too, noted that the weekend is the clincher at Zona Maco.
“It’s sort of an endurance race,” he said, to promote Mexican artists, which his gallery and others such as Kurimanzutto and Proyectos Monclova have been doing for years. He said the work is starting to pay off: “Now they are indeed in the international eye, and people are coming to Mexico and to Guadalajara to visit their studios.”
Riestra said Mexican collectors were growing more ambitious, looking to acquire bigger works, start foundations and museums, and seeking the guidance of art advisors as they grow their collections. He noted that the Mexican economy is strong and, specifically, that the Mexican people who buy art are getting wealthier and wealthier, which, alongside the worldwide trend of putting money into art as an asset, was boosting the local market.
Even though OMR has two spaces in Mexico City, Riestra said the fair was a key time for sales, since a lot of the Mexican public and even collectors don’t always visit galleries throughout the year (collectors are busy, he noted). OMR sold Arquihaikus by Jorge Méndez Blake, Atlas (2011), and La llama vista a través un cuerno (2018) by Rico, whose works are in the $10,000 range. The booth’s price range went up to $150,000 for a work by James Turrell.
Mauricio Galguera of Mexico City and Berlin’s Galería Hilario Galguera had a similar take. He said Mexican collectors were just beginning to get comfortable taking risks on younger artists, often after they’ve made a few initial investments in big names, such as the ones Galguera’s gallery represents, which include Damien Hirst, Daniel Buren, and Jannis Kounellis.
“These bigger names, Damien Hirst, Daniel Buren, [John] Baldessari, they’re an interesting first approach, a safe spot—artists that already have a name that you can go and buy one and it will be identifiable to anyone in your circle,” he said. “But this also opens the door for these collectors to understand that they can spend a bit more money than they were used to on some perhaps lesser-known artists who are also very important, but who are not as notorious or famous as these super stars, so it’s a very good entry point for us. Working with Damien, with Buren opens the door.”
At Zona Maco, Galguera sold work not only by Buren—an untitled 2018 mirrored work for $150,000 to a local collector—but also had strong interest in younger artists who they have shown at their curator-driven project space El Cuarto de Máquinas, including Marco Treviño, Gwladys Alonzo, and Benjamin Torres. They sold Alonzo’s Caillou Ciré II (2017), for $10,000, and Torres’s Colisiones Temporales: agosto 1986, I (2018), also for $10,000.
He was optimistic about the future, citing a “new fantastic generation of collectors in their thirties to mid-forties, people who will eventually inherit big companies,” who travel frequently, have a global mindset, and are open to learning about new artists, especially from a gallery they know.
Both at Zona Maco and at two satellite fairs that opened on Thursday, these younger collectors (or would-be collectors) were indeed out in force.
Gustavo Arróniz, founder of Mexico City gallery Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo, shows at both Zona Maco and Salón Acme, which was held this year in its sixth edition in a series of grand, crumbling, court-yarded buildings. Arróniz said Zona Maco was a broader market in part because it “attracts people who during the year don’t normally care about buying art, rich people who live close to the fair,” and want to support it.
Salón Acme, by contrast, “has its own voice, it’s more about discovering emerging audiences,” Arróniz said. “We can do both because [Salón Acme] is cheaper,” roughly a tenth of the price for participating in Zona Maco, or $2,500 versus $25,000. He said Salón Acme attracted people like a friend of his who is not herself in the art world but wants to buy something each year that’s “affordable and good,” and who might find Material, another satellite fair, “too alternative.”
At Zona Maco, Arróniz said sales were “very good,” mostly because he was showing a young painter, Omar Rodriguez-Graham, who is “very hot right now.” Of the three paintings he brought, he had sold two by Thursday morning to people who had seen it during the preview. “But those are the strategies,” he said. “You can’t present something too intellectually complicated in Maco,” whereas he could be a little more experimental Acme.
Nerea Fernández of Madrid’s NF/ Nieves Fernandez, who was showing at Zona Maco, said she thought Salón Acme might actually be a better match for her program if participation wasn’t limited to Mexican galleries. She said that the stakes had been raised at Zona Maco, which has matured from a fair with more emerging galleries that attracted a lot of curators to one that brings in more “powerful galleries” with blue-chip names.
“It’s more difficult for younger galleries now, because these collectors, they’re not going to come by your booth, and the other ones are going to stop coming because they’re not looking for Ai Weiwei,” she said.
However, Homero Fernández, a founder of Salón Acme who also has a gallery in Mexico City, Parque Galería, said in Mexico City, the range of fairs can work symbiotically. Salón Acme was started as a platform for artists, a way to help those without representation find a connection to the market. But he also shows at Zona Maco, where he can expose his young artists to the key collectors who are drawn by the blue-chip names.
“A lot of collectors come [to Mexico City] from Latin America because of the blue-chip galleries, and for me as a gallery it’s important to put my artists in that network of the big collectors,” he said. Fernández was showing work by artists such as Sam Durant and Allen Ruppersberg, who sell for up to $60,000, as well as by younger artists whose work goes for around $6,000.
“The good collectors go and check out the emerging spaces,” he said.
Galguera said that was one lovely thing about the Mexican market: As a collector this week, “you find a niche for everything.”
“You have the more established fair like Maco, where you have all the famous international galleries coming in, then you have, economically speaking, the mid-level fair, Material, which has some fantastic projects, and then you have Acme, geared toward emerging artists,” he said. “In terms of economics, I think there’s a target for everything.”
