Lauren Jauregui On Dinah Shore Weekend, Self-Love, & What’s Upcoming

The Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend, the world’s largest event and music festival for queer women, will return September 25-29 at the Margaritaville Resort in Palm Springs, which was famous in the 1960s for its role as celebrity central, drawing the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, Sonny and Cher, and more.

Also simply known as The Dinah, this year will mark the annual extravaganza’s 33rd anniversary, and over 15,000 people are expected to attend throughout the weekend. Since its founding in 1991 by Mariah Hanson, The Dinah has made a lasting impact not only on the LGBTQ+ community, but the entertainment industry as well. Keeping her eye on the music scene, Hanson continues to secure a stunning line-up of high-profile headlining acts and up-and-coming talent.

Celebrating the power of queer expression, this year’s roster will include Iniko, Lauren Sanderson, King Mala, Whitney Peyton, Sherrelle Holmes, Lucy & La Mer, and Lauren Jauregui, whom Instinct recently had the opportunity to connect with. Rising to prominence as a member of Fifth Harmony, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, Jauregui will kick off The Dinah’s Black and White Ball.

The multi-platinum artist took some time to share her excitement about performing at The Dinah, as well as her passion for queer activism, embracing self-love, and upcoming projects.

Hi, Lauren! Thank you for taking some time to chat with me. How excited are you to perform at this year’s Dinah Shore Weekend?

I am so excited! I’ve heard so many great things about The Dinah, and I’ve never personally been yet. Not only do I get to attend the event, but perform as well, I am over the freaking moon!

Would you say this has kind of been a goal of yours?

You know, I hadn’t really thought about it as a goal. It’s just such a vital an amazing event for queer culture.

You are helping to kick off the festival by playing at one of its main events, the Black and White Ball. Can you give us a hint as to what attendees can expect from your set?

I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but you can definitely expect dancing and live vocals, baby!

Besides performing, what else are you looking forward to the most about this event?

Just being in the space and being in the atmosphere that The Dinah creates. I’m going to be around a bunch of beautiful women, and I mean, what more could I ask for? (Laughs). 

Would you say festivals like The Dinah are still very much necessary today?

Absolutely. I think that queer spaces in all formats are vital for our community, especially with all the crazy political things going on right now. We as a community have been kind of devalued for so long, so I think when we come together to create our own spaces that shines a light onto our value, spaces that are for us and by us, I think they’re so special. They definitely need to be preserved. 

Have you always had a passion for LGBTQ+ activism and being outspoken for queer issues?

Honestly, I think it kind of came when I accepted myself. I think when you embody who you are, you automatically become an advocate for things. For me, it’s very much about the realities that face our community and being a part of it. I feel like it’s deeply about shining a light on that, being in camaraderie with one another, and strengthening the movement for all my rights in that sense.

What do you always hope audiences take away from your music?

I love when someone listens to my music and they can resonate with what I’m talking about, for their own reasons. If my music played a role in helping them feel a little less alone in this world, that means the world to me.

As we all know, you rose to prominence as a member of Fifth Harmony, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Did you ever imagine that would lead you to where you are today?

Of course not! I was 16 at the time when all that happened to me, so I couldn’t possibly imagine the whirlwind it would take on me, but I’m very grateful for it. I’ve connected with so many people across the world, and it opened doors for me to be able to create my own music. 

What would you say was one of your absolute favorite Fifth Harmony moments?

Oh, man. There were a lot. We had so many incredible moments, but probably when we won our VMA. That was so crazy. Being up on that stage, I just kept thinking, what the heck is my life?

When you decided to move forward with a solo career, was that challenging?

No, I believe I was ready for it at the time. I’ve been very passionate about music and writing my whole life, so getting to actualize my own creative vision, I was incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to start doing that. 

You released your first solo EP, Prelude, in 2021, and your second, In Between, in 2023. Any word on an official debut album or tour?

Lauren Jauregui: Yes! I’m currently working on my debut album, but I have no idea when it will be released. It does have soul, so it’s definitely a reality (laughs). 

You’ve dabbled in everything from pop and R&B to reggaeton and alternative. What sounds can we expect to hear from you next?

I think this debut album is going to be a combination of all of the above. I like learning to draw different elements in and create a cohesive piece. I believe that is where I’m at right now.

I am very much in love with your single “Burning,” which you described as ‘an ode to my queerness and the unapologetic nature with which I embrace it regardless of my Catholic upbringing.’ There are millions of people out there who have struggled with their faith and accepting their true, authentic selves. Do you mind talking about your journey with this?

I grew up Catholic, so there was a very profound implication that queerness was evil and of Satan, So, I think for a long time, that hindered my ability to recognize it within myself. When I was younger, I didn’t even think about liking women. I always thought women were beautiful, and I’d think, wow, she’s gorgeous or I’m so inspired by her, but I never really thought of it more than that until, ironically, I attended a Catholic high school. It was an all-girls school, so I kind of fell in love with my best friend. I was like, oh, I guess I do have feelings for women. That was surely an experience for me, but I would say I never really took religion super seriously. I’ve always been very intellectually driven, and I’m very spiritual as well, so I am very connected with a God essence, angels, and my ancestors. I’m very much connected to that, but I’m not very connected to the idea of institutionalized religion. I feel like it’s been used by men for centuries to subject queer people, women, and basically anyone who’s not them into submission. I don’t believe in that. I’m more free with with my concept of God, and I’m grateful for that.

How do you plan to continue staying true and authentic through your craft?

I’m just going to continue following my insights on who I am as a person and what I love. I’m very committed to my values and making art. First and foremost, it’s how I process life, and it’s how I’m able to make sense of my inner world. Second, to share that with people so they can see themselves within it or help them understand their own lives better, that’s the reward of it all. So, I’m going to stick to that formula and it will lead me where I’m destined. 

What does the rest of 2024 look like for you?

It is very much about locking in people around me who are going to help me amplify this dream, and very much about dedicating myself to my mind, body, and spirit. I’ve spent a lot of time in this life in my head and away from feeling embodied in this body, but I’ve healed a lot of the traumas that led to that. Now, I’m falling in love with myself in a new and more authentic way.

What are some other future goals you hope to accomplish with your career and platform?

I want to do it all, baby! I want to be in arenas, award shows – all the things people love to do. 

Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you’d like to mention or plug?

Not in particular. I’m very focused right now on getting this album done, and as soon as it’s ready and packaged, it will be yours!

Youngbin voices your name one, two times. You ignore it, insisting to suck on his collarbone, that damn sic parvis magna tattoo lured your lips. He had opened a few buttons of his dress shirt right after he got home from work. He reproaches you a third time, his tone is actually lenient. As indulgent as he can be when his daughter refuses to eat because she feels unwell. "k/n's just fell asleep. You know she sometimes wakes up..." he tries to dissuade you.

His hand wrapped a handful of your hair, he threatened on pulling you away from him but could not finish the move. "Shit" he repeats as much as he repeated your name seconds earlier. "Just don't go much further for now."

Inseong:

Inseong enters the bedroom after fitteen minutes. His hair is all messed up, which tells you that he was lying down with his boy while telling the craziest stories a man could conceive. You loved that about him. "What were we talking about again?" he asks with the intention of resume it from where you stopped when his child called him.

"It doesn't matter" you reply right away and hold him by the waistband. The way your index finger hooks past the fabric draws a chuckle from him. He directs his eyes toward the door, still wide open. "Don't worry yet" you assure. He holds his gaze - as alert as he can - on the entry while you work on making him feel good through his clothes.

Jaeyoon:

To be realistic, Jaeyoon is the first to lock the door once his child is in bed. His baby girl knows well how to knock and fortunately, she sleeps like an angel. You sometimes get worried. "Honey, you're insane" you moan low as he cups your breasts underneath your blouse. K/n gifted you with such a cute garment before the dinner, you know she had chosen it by herself because it was pink. Anyways, Jaeyoon went shopping with her and paid for it, hence he felt in the right to take it off of you.

"I will stop it if you tell me to" he tenderly remembers touching noses with you. You shake your head slowly, in a way that makes your noses brush. The scene feels cute despite the fact that your tits are cradled by your boyfriend's naughty hands.

Dawon:

"Baby, are you still watching this movie?" Dawon asks through laughter once he finds out that you kept invested in that animation even after k/n fell asleep. "That's a cool story" you explain collecting the remote control. "I'm gonna pause it here so k/n can resume it later"

It's afternoon but everything is absolutely silent. Dawon deliacately pulls you down on the mattress, you could take a nap too. He rests his eyes closed and pushes his leg on top of you so you won't move away. However, instead of closing your eyes too, you start scratching his thigh in a very inappropriate way. He does not take much to start humping you like a teenager. "The things you make me do" he whispers. "I'm giving us 15 minutes and you better swallow all your delicious moans"

Zuho:

That little cutie simply consumed all your batteries in the amusement park. Juho did everything his child needed as soon as you all arrived home. You even offered to give him a helping hand but he expressed clearly that you did amazing in the afternoon and needed some rest from his kid.

Once, k/n fell asleep, your boyfriend let his body drop beside you on the couch. "Are you staying for the night?" he asked, softly playing with your hair, his deep voice sounded worn out and even sexier thanks to it. You answered with a stroke along his thigh, ascending to his crotch. "We deserve wrapping this day up, right?" he suggested, immediately showing you his darkening eyes.

Rowoon:

Seokwoo came back to the scene of his daughter dozing off on your thighs. You smiled shyly, not knowing what you have just done. The girl simply laid closer and napped straight after a few strokes on his scalp." Are you a child whisperer?" your boyfriend asked with humor while analyzing the little girl. She was acting up because she had lost a few pieces of a puzzle, then he went to the kitchen, but now she was peacefully asleep!

Daddy took his young rebel in his arms and put her in her bed. "She's really something" you commented when you all were finally alone in the bedroom. "But his dad is also fascinating" you added suggestively touching his clad abdomen. Rowoon looked to be unable to do anything but observe your hand. "Go easy, y/n" he voiced without moving a single muscle to stop you.

Yoo Taeyang:

Taeyang caught you still tenderly admiring the seashells that his daughter brought from the beach. He stayed silent for a while until you noticed his warm presence. "You're slowly becoming friends" he affirmed. You could see how much it affected him by the sparkles in his eyes so you signed to him to come closer.

As he hugged you firmly and nuzzled onto your neck, you breathed satisfied and held him by the butt cheeks. He laughed. "I'd think you want something nasty if we haven't just come back from the purest day out". You pulled away to look at his eyes and nodded. Taeyang widened his eyes in amazement "What about doing it in the bathroom?"

Hwiyoung:

"Babe, you got new tattoos" you voiced playfully when Youngkyun squatted down to pull Lego pieces from under the table. He turned his head back to comprehend what you were talking about. His face denoted confusion. "I mean that one on your arm" you explained through laughter and pointing in the direction so he could verify it.

"Oh, this" your boyfriend figured out after spying on the drawing made with a pen. "He's been drawing everywhere". You looked at Youngkyun as he stood up and walked toward you. The urge to grab his hips was irrefutable so you landed your hands there and said what crossed your mind. "There's something I wanna draw on you". He nodded, nibbling on his bottom lip "We need to lock inside the bedroom for it, right?"

Chani:

From the entrance, you observed Chani skillfully slide his son onto the bed. He actually sensed it when he was taken away from his dad's arms but Chani easily shushed him into slumber. He looked for your eyes there in the doorway and winked, he looked just a bit cocky about excelling the parenting thing.

"Any plan for tonight?" he asked as soon as the door clicked shut. "We can do anything except noise". You pondered, your index finger slowly playing with his lips while you decided how to say it. "I don't know whether this is appropriate, love". He tilted his head, so you demonstrated it for him by rubbing your front against his. "Oh? You're talking about that, right?" he assured with a brand new demeanor. "Sweetheart, I'm a dad, not a saint"

The quiet stillness of the room was abruptly shattered by the insistent ring of a phone, eliciting a groan from beneath the covers of the bed. Slowly, a hand emerged from the depths of the blankets, fumbling until it grasped the phone and brought it to an ear.

"Hello?" a rough, raspy voice mumbled.

"Blue, answer your damn door. Why the hell isn't your doorbell working? I've been knocking for the past 15 minutes," came the irritated voice on the other end.

Startled, Blue peeked out from under the covers, now noticing the persistent knocking in the living room.

'Huh, how did I not hear that?' she wondered.

"I'll be there in a moment," Blue huffed as she sat up in bed, ending the call and swinging her legs over the side of the bed. She grabbed a discarded black shirt from the floor and pulled it on before making her way to the front door.

Opening it revealed her sister, Dinah, standing on the other side.

"Blue Hansen! It's 2 in the afternoon and you're still in bed?" Dinah exclaimed, clearly bewildered.

Blue stepped aside to let Dinah in, closing the door behind her. "I've been up until like 4 working on my book," she explained with a yawn, rubbing her eyes tiredly.

Dinah hummed in understanding as she headed to the kitchen in search of food, while Blue retreated back to her room, slipping back under the cozy blankets. However, her brief respite was interrupted when Dinah barged into her room with a box of Oreos and flopped down on top of her, eliciting a groan of annoyance from Blue.

"What are you doing here?" Blue asked, slightly exasperated.

Dinah took a bite of her Oreo before replying, "Well, my dear twin, today is the Fifth Harmony reunion."

At the mention of the reunion, Blue's interest piqued. "You guys getting back together?" she inquired eagerly.

Dinah chuckled. "No, but we're getting together for old times' sake."

Disappointed by the news, Blue slumped back down. "Then why are you here? Shouldn't you be with the girls?"

Dinah's expression turned pleading. "Actually, can you come with me? I don't want to go by myself."

Blue hesitated for a moment, but Dinah's relentless bouncing on her back convinced her to relent.

"Fine," she finally relented.

Dinah cheered and quickly got Blue ready, instructing her to shower and providing her with an outfit. After a quick shower, Blue emerged from her room dressed in the clothes Dinah had laid out for her—a pair of dark green overalls, a faded black Guns N' Roses shirt, and black Converse shoes. She glanced at herself in the mirror, adjusted her black cap, and nodded in approval before joining Dinah in the living room.

Together, they headed out to Blue's car, a 2024 Jeep Wrangler, and set off to meet the girls at a diner, singing along to their favorite tunes along the way.

Meanwhile, at the diner, Lauren, Ally, and Normani were catching up after five years of hiatus. As they chatted, they were interrupted by the sound of music outside. Peering through the window, they saw a jeep pull into the parking lot, blaring their song "Kings & Queens." To their surprise, Dinah emerged from the vehicle, waving excitedly as she entered the diner.

"Dinah, you really know how to make an entrance," Lauren teased, earning a laugh from Dinah.

"Yeah, blame it on Blue. She insisted on finishing the song," Dinah explained, shrugging as they settled back into their booth.

"Blue?" Ally inquired, her curiosity piqued.

Before Dinah could respond, another voice chimed in, causing Lauren's jaw to drop slightly.

Standing before them was a striking figure—tall, with tan skin, hazel eyes, and a muscular build that was hard to miss. Lauren couldn't help but notice how attractive she was.

"Sorry, I got carried away wanting to see everyone," Dinah apologized sheepishly, drawing attention to the newcomer.

So, this was Blue. Lauren's mind raced with questions—was she Dinah's girlfriend?

Quickly recovering, Dinah introduced her. "Guys, meet my twin, Blue!"

Twin? Lauren's confusion only grew. How had they never heard of her before?

Blue seemed shy, offering a timid wave and a simple greeting. Lauren exchanged glances with Normani and Ally, all equally puzzled by the newcomer.

"How have we never met Blue before?" Ally asked, echoing Lauren's thoughts.

Dinah explained, "She was always traveling whenever you guys were around."

As Blue joined them at the table, the conversation shifted to her work. Normani inquired about her occupation, prompting Blue to reveal she was a writer.

"She's an author, with several published books," Dinah proudly announced, prompting a blush from Blue.

"Any books I might have read?" Ally inquired eagerly, her eyes lighting up with interest.

"The Chronicles of Mythology series," Dinah responded, her words causing Lauren's eyes to widen in surprise.

Ally's eyes widened in recognition. "The Chronicles of Mythology series? I love that!"

"I love that series!" Lauren exclaimed with a wide smile, earning a quizzical eyebrow raise from Blue.

With hope in her voice, Lauren added, "I hope, if you don't mind, signing my books one day?"

Blue, clearly growing more comfortable, nodded warmly. "Of course, anything for my fans. Bring your books next time, and I'll sign them."

She couldn't contain her excitement—Lauren squealed with delight, realizing her favorite author was sitting right next to her. Glancing at Dinah, who seemed puzzled by Lauren reaction, she shot her a glare.

"What did I do?" Dinah asked, genuinely bewildered.

"You knew I love that series and knew she wrote it," Lauren huffed, turning to face Blue. With a mischievous wink, she silently communicated her amusement, causing Blue to stifle her laughter.

As the conversation with Blue flowed effortlessly, Lauren found herself completely engrossed in her company. While the other girls chatted amongst themselves, Lauren couldn't help but be drawn to this captivating woman.

"And then Dinah, being the crackhead she is, ran through the living room and straight into the sliding glass door and fell down. She couldn't tell that the sliding door was there," Blue recounted with a laugh, triggering Lauren's laughter.

"That sounds like Dinah, for sure," She chuckled, shaking her head at the mental image.

Their private moment was interrupted by a voice breaking through the comfortable atmosphere. "Hey Blue, Lauren, it's getting late, we should head home."

They both frowned as they glanced at the time, and Lauren was shocked to see it was already 6 o'clock.

Blue and Lauren had been so engrossed in their conversation that time had flown by without them even realizing it. But Lauren didn't want it to end.

Softly, Lauren frowned, her gaze dropping to the floor until a hand gently lifted my chin. She looked up to meet Blue's eyes, her smile instantly warming her heart.

"Can I have your number? I want to continue our conversation, I really enjoyed it," Blue asked shyly.

Lauren couldn't help but smile widely, nodding in agreement. She retrieved my phone, and so did she, and we exchanged them. Lauren added herself as "Lauren💚" in her phone before handing it back. When she returned my phone, Lauren couldn't help but chuckle at the contact name she'd chosen for herself—"Fav Author📖".

As they all stood up from their seats, they shared hugs and promises to keep in touch and meet up whenever they could. Ally and Normani headed off to their cars, leaving Dinah, Blue, and Lauren behind. Despite wanting to stay, she couldn't help but frown at the thought of leaving Blue's side.

Noticing Lauren's reluctance to leave, Dinah chimed in, "Hey Lauser, Blue lives here, like 15 minutes from here. Y'all can hang out whenever."

Lauren smiled at the thought, glancing up at Blue, who was already looking down at her.

"I don't mind. We should hang out whenever."

Nodding in agreement, Lauren hugged Blue tightly, feeling the warmth of Blue's muscles beneath her clothing as they embraced. Their hug lingered until Dinah's cough broke the moment, leaving Blue blushing as Lauren pulled away.

Giving Dinah a playful glare, Lauren waved at the twins before turning to Blue. "I'll text you later?" She asked, met with a soft nod and a smile from Blue.

As Lauren climbed into her car and drove away, she caught sight of Blue punching Dinah's arm playfully, both of them blushing. With a smile, Lauren left the diner parking lot, already looking forward to seeing Blue again.

I always believed that the Australian artist Loui Jover made a portrait of the girls that he titled Soul Kiss and that he released and promoted in 2017. Also, that the girls followed him on social media.

And I think and believe it is them because whenever I do my own version of the Soul Kiss girls, the resemblance is undeniable.

(Besides, I remember that the first time I was searching for Camren this draw appeared along the other pictures of the girls.)
