I think kantai collection might be the first big gacha game that's faded from cultural consciousness? it had the doujin (like. in general. from fan games to art to music) and cosplay scene in a gorilla grip in the 2010s. it is the only reason "ship girl games" are a subgenre of mobile game, and it's indisputable that it's aesthetic sensibilities have influenced modern mecha musume-type characters- yet, the only thing of the game itself to survive the erosion of time is shimakaze's outfit. which is now indistinguishable from what you would find in a google search for anime lingerie. kantai collection no longer meaningfully exists, but it's essence lingers over the surrounding culture in which it was enmeshed, which makes it like laura palmer for weeaboos.

My view of Rachel Amber has changed over the years.

Honestly, many of us have seen our views grow and change. Part of this is of course Before the Storm's Rachel. And another bit is how Dontnod wanted Rachel to be their Laura Palmer (to the point that like Laura Palmer, Rachel was originally 17 when she dies). But the thing is... the Rachel that ends up showing up in the original LiS is very much her own person.

One thing I recall is how people started commenting on how much like Rachel they saw Max as being. Max was a funhouse mirror reflection of Rachel and when she put on clothes Rachel was regularly seen in... for a split second people saw Rachel. But I think there was more to it than Max "cosplaying as Rachel" or even the possibility that Rachel had "touched" Max and maybe helped manifest Max's Rewind.

I think that Rachel was very much like Max... but she was akin to a Max Caulfield who was confident and checked in on people. So for Max, dressed like Rachel, to pop in and talk to Nathan... for a moment Nathan was just so reminded of the teenage girl who was lying dead in the junkyard that he blurted out Rachel's name. When Max comes downstairs earlier that day, Joyce also had a flash of Rachel but in her case I think it was more because Rachel would frequently end up spending the night over without any warning and thus Joyce seeing a girl dressed like Rachel... and she was flashing back at Rachel doing the same so many times in the past.

So. Would a more confident Max Caulfield like her shier and less confident doppelganger? I think that Rachel would take Max in under her wing. She'd not be the Protector that Chloe was for Max, but would rather encourage Max to stand up for herself. She'd ask Max why she doesn't stand up for herself, encourage her to do so, and she'd have Max's back. And honestly... Rachel would probably flirt with her a bit but primarily to push Max outside her comfort zone while also trying to tweak Chloe, trying to get Chloe to act on her affection for Max.

Would Rachel try to romance both Chloe and Max? I'm not sure. She was not interested in continuing her relationship with Chloe despite Chloe being quite interested in her... so I'm not sure she's interested in being a throuple with Max and Chloe. But I can clearly see her cheering on Max and Chloe and being their biggest shipper.

What would Rachel’s reaction of meeting Max be of? Would she thing positively of Max. Is there a possibility they would get along as best friends or just acquaintances?

I think there's a good chance they would have been friends! It's hard to tell for sure, but Chloe says repeatedly that she thinks Max and Rachel would have been friends, and since she knew them both well I tend to take her word for it. (Though I am very biased because I would have loved an Amberpricefield BFF trio.)

However, even outside of what Chloe says I could see them getting along! They're both passionate, artsy, and adventures when Chloe is with them. They also both show an inclination toward wanting to travel and share a similar fashion taste! Plus, Rachel wanted to be a model and Max was a photographer, so their dreams would have correlated well and they could have helped each other out!

I really do think they would have been friends. Best friends even. Maybe even gal pals.
