It was Lyra’s birthday and she was having birthday hugs from Artemis. Which turned into a bear hug that meant him picking Lyra up off the ground, so that she was suspended in his arms in the air.

“Artemis!” She giggled, surprised but not actually upset. She kicked her feet out behind her. “Put me down! Don’t think I won’t kick you just ‘cause it’s my birthday!” She gave him a teasing glare, raising an eyebrow in a way that made her resemble her mother.

“I don’t think I’ve eaten that much cake before,” lyra admitted with a light giggle. her sugar crash was starting to kick in and pan was lightly dozing in her lap. she gave violet a proud grin. “I en’t complainin’ though, it was really good cake.”

“mama!” lyra ran towards her mother, stopping as she reached to express her excitement by bouncing a little on her feet. pan, in his pine marten form, was moving around in excited circles beside her and let out an delighted squeak when he stopped.

“mama, it’s my birthday!” both child and dæmon had been even more full of energy than usual this morning, once they’d woken up and remembered what day it was.

“it en’t that much different being thirteen than it is being twelve,” lyra admitted with a light shrug of her shoulders. “I am technically a teenager now though. that’s a bit strange to think about.” she was at an age where pan could settle any day now. something told her it wouldn’t be very long…

pan moved to sniff curiously at the present as lyra looked from it to aisling with a grin.

“you remembered!” she threw her arms around her friend and gave her a grateful squeeze before pulling back after a short while. “thank you. you din’t have to get me anything.” she looked back at the present though, still grateful for it and curious to find out what it might be.

“I en’t ever spent a birthday in a balloon,” lyra says with a grin, gazing down at the view from where they are. she turns back to lee, curiosity on her features and tone as she spoke next. “where are we going?”

"Of course!" Artemis smiled brightly, nodding. He was excited to spoil Lyra rotten, like some big brothers did. "I know a great place for ice cream. Anything you wanna go see? We can always go and look, choose one we like the look of."

Persephone was currently baking a cake and getting a few presents together for Lyra, letting Artemis distract her for the time being.

"Or, do you want a present first?" Artemis grinned.

Lyra grinned happily as Artemis agreed to the cinema and the ice cream, though she knew it was going to be a great birthday regardless because she was spending it with him. “I’m not sure what films they have, so let’s go see.”

Her face lit up again at the mention of gifts. She always felt delighted when people got her gifts, because it was something they’d got especially for her. That had made them think of her.

“You got me presents? Let’s open them first!”

“Thank you,” Lyra said with a delighted grin. She was happy to be spending her birthday with the man that she considered to be her big brother.

She and Pan pondered the question about what they wanted to do, before deciding on an answer. “Could we go to the cinema? And then get some ice cream after?”

“my mother probably feels the same way,” she admitted with a chuckle. mrs coulter had always disliked disobedience after all and children growing older, so it wouldn’t surprise her if this milestone was one mrs coulter particularly disliked.

lyra pondered the question, eager to try the cake but also curious about the presents. after a moment though, she decided. “I’ll open the presents first.” she moved closer to the couch, taking them in for a moment. “I don’t know which to start with though!”
