So, I’ve already finished the manga and I’m now waiting for the new episode but during the gap I’ve been consuming fandom content, as per use. Now, the character that I’ve been consuming the most fandom content is Laios cause he’s so jdjdjsjs, and this idea has been fluttering round my head because I’ve only seen THREE actual posts/works about this. Two being fics and one being a tumblr post.

The specific idea is a sibling swap, Falin and Laios, and I’m suffering from lack of content from it!! Only two fics and one tumblr post [ТдТ] One of the fics is Laios and making his desire to be to swap with Falin, and what he thinks will happen. The other is Falin going through the dungeon to save Laios and it’s specific the episode that’s coming out this Thursday, so chapter 27/28 in manga I think.

Like this concept really gets me going cause it changed the whole dynamic of how things would play out. Laios being there meant they met Senshi because Laios was interested in eating monsters. Falin, although she does have an interest, would not have that strong of an interest in eating monsters. I also feel she may not realise it’s hunger that caused them to fail because she was focused on protecting her brother and the party, literally letting herself get eaten to save her brother. She also would not have intimate knowledge of monsters so the party may have a harder time killing monsters.

I think Marcille and Chilchuck would still be in the party. Marcille doesn’t seem to have a deep connection with Laios at the start, with her clashing with Laios and his monster eating habits. Plus the prior encounter where she wanted to kill him for taking Falin away from magic school. This bond deepens between them as they go down the dungeon and she obviously cares for the rest of the party, feeling betrayed that Namari and Shuro [I keep forget your actual name] left. But I feel if it were Lauos to get eaten she wouldn’t be as motivated as she is with Falin [Lesbian icon!] because she doesn’t get to connect with him. This then brings into question, would she revive Laios and risk being jailed by the elves?

She probably would because it’s Falin who asked but there would be more hesitation. Especially with Chilchuck who is against it no matter what.

Talking about Chilchuck, I feel he would stay out of obligation. The same reason he stayed with Laios originally. I think his dynamic wouldn’t change that much but maybe he’d see Falin and Marcill closer to his daughters [?] or maybe he’d have a gripe cause of their relationship as we already know he doesn’t do inter party relationships.

Namari would still leave but I think Shuro would be more hesitant, his love for Falin possibly making him stay for a little bit.

Of course we have the problem with money and food but I think Falin has enough people skills to gather some things. But, because she lived with Laios for some time and heard about his monster fantasies, maybe she’d consider eating monsters. I feel people would be more likely to listen to her rather than Laios [sorry buddy] but still question it. However, Shuro did have a whole crew so maybe he’d help with that and we’d have a whole different crew dynamic.

Talking about that, I wonder how Kabru and his party would interact with Falin’s party. How’d the Namari reunion go? What would Falin’s desire be? How would the finale fight be? Would Laios have a cool chimera bod like Falin?

So many questions for my tiny brain….

dunmeshi time! I honestly did not love this episode. it nailed some important scenes, but the music was fairly boring, and the art style was...idk why they all looked like babies. I appreciate the faithfulness to the manga, but I expected more for such a monumental and visually spectacular battle.

On Excrucian Names

Tonight, I wanted to talk a bit about Excrucian names!

In a way, this is an old debt coming due.

When I set up the Excrucian names for Nobilis 2nd edition, I made them evocative but ... difficult to come up with. And I’ve admittedly been paying the price for that, slowly, in dribs and drabs, ever since. But with Glitch ...

Well.

The first horror was the realization that I would need a whole lot of Excrucian names just for, like, characters that got mentioned as examples along the way.

A whole lot.

But boldly I soldiered through. Bit by bit. Piece by piece. By my blood and sweat  I made them.

And then, after all that, I realized:

People would have to be able to make their own.

Oh, I tried to dodge it:

Names

Excrucian names are affected, archaic, and loosely symbolic of the ending of all things. Glitch has chosen to represent this with early Germanic given names and surnames loosely inspired by the cities and geographical features of late Roman-era Europe—Symbolically, they are Goths and Vandals, as the fall of Rome draws near.

This does not, though, and has never, held for all of them; if nothing else, most of their given names are from later times or nearby regions, and many have been tweaked for the modern ear. Even when their names are perfectly on theme, it’s possible that children raised on different stories will still hear them in a different way, or that other conventions will prove to be more convenient for your group. Certainly, in practice, when naming your Excrucian, anything sufficiently harsh and fancy should suffice; you might consider the example PCs on pg. XX-XX to be an estimate of how far a typical group might stray.

Now, technically, I realized this at the very beginning, too. There was a chapter set aside for Excrucian names in my early outline, in the place where Nobilis had flower designing, because I knew that I’d have to do this. But I’d---

Not forgotten, really. Just hid the truth, temporarily, from myself.

Towards the end of project, I could hide the truth no longer.

The good thing, I thought, was that I no longer really had the spare wordcount for a section on designing Excrucian names. I would have to just ... make a list. I would make a list of 101 Excrucian names, and that would be cool, right?

So the next step---short of an actual name design system, you know, the kind of thing that actually breaks down the names of Excrucians we have into components or whatever, makes Coriander into “corn of the end” and Iolithae into, I dunno, are you going to ask her?

Now, naturally, there are like ... ten thousand of these on the Internet, and I could theoretically have cribbed one of them and put them in the book. The problem with this is that then I would be cribbing someone else’s work and putting it in my book.

If I was going to build a library of Gothic names, I was going to build my own set. I was going to get a well-curated collection.

There was actually some project creep as this went on, because my definition of what exactly I was looking for and what qualified a name for inclusion or rejection changed as I worked; sometimes I was finicky about Visigoths and most of the time any Gothy tribe was like “you know what, you’re Gothic enough.” Some of the time I stayed close to the right centuries, most of the time I really kind of didn’t?

It was not actual scholarship, is what I’m saying, except in that I did avoid some of the names on the lists that float around that were historical figures who dealt with Goths but weren’t actually connected themselves.

It was not scholarship, just ... Jennaizing the available Gothic names lists.

One thing you might notice about this list is that it’s incomplete; it doesn’t even have Coriander or Iolithae on it!

Another thing you might notice is that it has a lot of variants of the same name, because honestly, a lot of the Gothic names you’ll find on the lists floating around are the same person.

... and lastly, you’ll notice that this is a horrible names list for PCs.

Nobody wants a group of PCs named Theodahad, Thiudahad, Theodegisclus, Theodegotha, Theoderic, Tufa, and Ingund.

It was unclear how I was going to present this to address the problem, TBH; it was what I went looking for, it was what I thought people needed, but they didn’t need it, or at least couldn’t use it. I couldn’t exactly say “here are some names, which you can look at but probably should consider not using; also some of them have like eighteen variants but most of them don’t?”
