Week 9 to 12 - Latin Dance (Salsa)

Salsa was originated in 1960s in New York City. It was developed by Dominicans and Puerto Ricans living in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Salsa is a popular dance in ballroom, outdoor and club settings.

Movements

I was not challenged by dancing solo because all I had to do was to focus on my body flow and the shift of weight. The challenging part of Salsa was dancing with a partner. Although I did not get to try it in class, I have tried dancing with a partner in Brisbane Square’s Salsa event on Friday nights (due to COVID it has temporarily closed). Guys usually dominate the dance scene as they guide the ladies their direction and movement. I’ve learned that I needed to trust my dance partner, go with the flow and stick with the footwork, but I still needed a lot of practice and time to solidify the foundations and making instant decisions during partner dancing. An interesting fact about Salsa was that this dance style was mostly improvisation. As a trained commercial dancer, there were often choreography and some freestyle, but doing a dance style that was mainly freestyle could be challenging because my body could get overwhelmed by the huge possibilities of creating movement and changing directions. So all I could say was to practise the foundations, stick with a few variations, and slowly branch out to more movements.

Culture

I have many Latin American friends in Brisbane, the majority of them are from Colombia, then Peru and Brazil. Colombians and Peruvians are more connected to Salsa as they have their own Salsa styles, they also share the same language (Spanish). Brazilians is more connected to Samba and speaks Portugese. In fact, the entire Latin America except Brazil speaks Spanish, and I can see how their culture, especially Salsa dance, connected this big continent together even though people are from different countries. The element of Salsa dance that intrigued me the most is their music. Their music was mainly from the 60s to 80s. How could they still be this popular 60 years later? I appreciate how this culture has been successfully spread to the modern generation and how much passion young Latin Americans have for Salsa dance. Most songs in Salsa were about the survival of Latin Americans regarding to their status, dreams, and frustrations about their society.

Funny fact: Is Salsa dip and Salsa dance related?

The answer is no.
