There was an era that Latino Culture was ubiquitous in Silver Lake. There were of course a ton of Mexican/Cuban/Salvadereño restaurants, and there was also Latino Theater and Latino music along Sunset Boulevard. Fragments of a Latino LÁ age. Here’s the flyer for such era: A one man show written and performed by Paul Saucido (L.A. Teatro) at Glaxa Studios in March 1996. As a hook for this play entitled “A Beast in the Field,” there were also had music performances after the play (but mainly people went for the music), among them Quinto Sol (Advertised as a Funk/Rap outfit? Probably before the band took a turn to reggae), Ollín (Accordion Punk), Los Olvidados (Ska punk según eso), Las 15 Letras (acoustic!) and Aztlán Underground (indigenous Rap). Btw, L.A. Teatro was a bilingual, Latino theater troupe first formed by Cal State LÁ students in the early 1990s. Their members went to work on TV projects and were also ever-present at the first itineration of the Chicana/o Latina/o Student Resource Center on the CSULA campus. #LATeatro #PaulSaucido #SilverLake #SunsetBoulevard #LatinoSilverLake #GlaxaStudios #LatinoTheater #QuintoSol #LosOlvidados #Las15Letras #AztlanUnderground #1996 #LosAngeles #RockarchivoLa (at Silver Lake, Los Angeles)

Before January ends, here's the flyer for this January 1996 "Roc En Español" gig in "East Los." Yes, "East Los" is in quotes because this is an address in Boyle Heights and we all know the how deep and messy the territorial differences and claims between B.H and E.L.A. Anyhow, it seems like the organizers behind "No Que No" were cool with including a location in Boyle Heights East Los Califas. "NO que N/Calli de Xicano Expression," was a short-lived autonomous space on Whittier boulevard, which sought to create a community-based multimedia center with its own radio and studio. This tocada featuring Las 15 Letras & Los Olvidados was among the several events that were held at the location (which is now a Pentecostal store-front church). However, the barrio was a lot heavier then and from what I remember it, the local gang began to show up around the shows, so it became too hot to do shows there after a couple of month. Yet, the idea and concept of creating community-based multimedia centers in East Los Angeles is something that has been shared, endured, and continues to be realized by different organizations and entities. Among them @radio_espacio_ housed at @espacio1839 on La Primera Street and soon the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory @thebhac will be launchings its own micro radio station staffed by community youth inside the historic Paramount Ballroom on César Chávez Avenue. So be on the lookout for that. #noqueno #boyleheights #eastLos #Califas #las15letras #losolvidados #rockangelino #1996 #rockarchivoLA (at Los Angeles, California)

This was from the second ever Pantón Rococó visit to Southern California. They had planned more shows in different cities in the U.S. but several of their dates were cancelled after 9/11 hence they stayed in L.A. for a week for a big show with Maldita Vecindad at the (now defunct) Universal Amphiteahter and asked several peeps with assistance in booking shows with local bands in Long Beach, San Diego, and Lynwood. Yes, this is the same week they played at the Our House in some almost “after school" show in Lywood a couple days before this Día de los Muertos LBC show with Retrovizor and Las 15 Letras. @boris_ponce9 from @galeriaalternativa was instrumental in making this show happen and oh yeah it was an Ecléctica Produshions. This is poster for one of the Las 15 Letras México Tour in 1999. In this show in Tlanepantla the band perfomed with Bim Skala Bim (Boston), Los Estrambóticos, Riesgo de Contagio, Salón Victoria, La Trenza de la Abuela and Hakuna Matana. This Mexico City tour was organized by @mariluz2012 who was the bands manager at the time. Mariluz worked at Epitaph Records and in time would co-found Sour Pop Records, a label that released several of the emerging pop-punk acts from Mexico including Bye Sami(Tijuana). The poster itself is pretty huge and it features all the bands that performed at this ska fest in the now mythic Arena López Mateos. If you want to see some footage of the epic concerts at La Arena, look for Sepultura’s 1989 performance at La Arean López Mateos on YouTube. 📸: @ellamaesinn thanks for sharing! #las15letras #arenalopezmateos bimskalabim #estramboticos #latrenzadelaabuela #salonvictoria #riesgodecontagio #Tlanepantla #losangeles #ska #1999 #rockarchivoLA (at Los Angeles, California)

Another Sunday at The Rotsy: Las 15 Letras • Pastilla • Fanatic • Dexentonados & Cafeína. April 2002. Check out all the over the top references to Mazinger Z. Why? Just because it was my favorite anime series growing up in Guadalajara. Btw, the new Maginzer Z movie is coming out next year straight from Japan. #las15letras #Pastilla #fanatic #dexentonados #caifeina #ska #indierock #psychobilly #punkrockdisco #mazinger #mazingerZ #westhollywood #theroxytheatre #sunsetStrip #2002 #eclectica #implacable #rockarchivola (at The Roxy Theatre)

The Community Service Organization (CSO) was established in Los Angeles after WWII, It focused on mobilizing Mexican American voters at a grassroots level in Boyle Heights and East L.A. in 1949, the CSO helped Edward Roybal become the first ethnic Mexican city councilmember in LA since 1881! Plus, César Chávez and Dolores Huerta got their starts as community organizers with the CSO. This is relevant as the CSO building in Boyle Heights also became the site not only of community organizing but also music shows for socially conscious Rock Angelino bands. This is the flyer (shared by @rocksinfronteras) and photos of the Cumbacha Slam Fest and was likely organized by Fernando “Fatal” Ramírez at the CSO in 1997. María Fatal, Las 15 Letras, Chencha Berrinches, and Viva Malpaches are featured in the photos shared by “El L.A. Rock Archivo 90's” (Lavis FB page, definitely check it out on Facebook). In addition, Pastilla and La Cruda also performed in this Rock Angelino summer fest. Currently the CSO building is a community center under the name of Boyle Heights City Hall, which houses Black Eye Peas’ after-school center called I.am College Track. #cumbachaslamfest #mariafatal #pastilla #las15letras #quinceletras #chenchaberrinches #vivamalpache #lacruda #boyleheights #cso #losangeles #ska #rockangelino #1997 #rockarchivoLA (at Boyle Heights City Hall)

@implacable #implacable #las15letras #chivoexpiatorio #malditasparejasromanticas #bayu #bayuparagozar #moisesbaqueiro #faisdodo #midcity #rockangelino #rocklatino #rockenespañol #latinalternative #punkrockdisco #losangeles #2003 #rockarchivoLA (at Fais Do Do)

This one is part of the school shows series: Cinco de Mayo Concert at at Cal State L.A. featuring: Las 15 Letras, Slowrider, Viernes 13 and Umbalaye. In some way, time period, shape or form the members of all these bands have collaborated with each other in different projects and have also been part of many other important music acts in LÁ. Previous to Las 15 Letras, Martín and Abel Sánchez along with Carlos "Guitarlos" Zepeda (Slowrider) belonged to a band called Echo Park with Guitarlos from Slowrider. Abel filled in bass duties with Viernes 13 in the mid 2000s. David Gómez from Slowrider was part of Beck's first touring band and he is now a much sought DJ under the moniker Gomez Comes Alive. Rafa Cardenas (Slowrider) is now a much sought photographer. Conversely, Umbalaye was the last band of the sorely missed José “Crunchy” Espinosa, founding member of Ozomatli. Besides Ozomatli and Umbalaye, Crunchy also performed with Carlos Santana, Money Mark, The Black Eyes Peas and many more until his untimely death in 2011. Check some other Umbalaye videos on YouTube. #Las15Letras #Slowrider #Viernes13 #Umbalaye #josecrunchyespinosa #eastsidegroove #ozomatli #rockangelino #rocklatino #rockenespañol #ska #mexska #mexicanska #latinoska #thekingsofevilska #losangeles #losangelescounty #2002 #5demayo #reclaimcinco #cincodemayo #csula #calstatela #rockarchivoLA (at California State University, Los Angeles)
