The Banner of Ladonia (Micronation)

The flag of Ladonia is just, funny to me.

Behold, the Glorious Green.

Before we move on to the flag, let's discuss micronations. Micronations are not usually serious claims (looking at you, Sealand). As micronation suggests, the territory they 'claim' is tiny. They arise for various reasons, some because of border disputes, many as a joke.

However, Ladonia became a microstate as a statement for Free Speech and artistic liberty. The artist Lars Vilks created a sculpture (entitled Nimis) in a nature reserve in Skåne, Sweden in 1980. He was prosecuted by the government for placing the sculpture and he was convicted. The sculpture was vandalized and 2/3 of it were lost. Over the next decade, Vilks continued his sculpture work in the nature reserve, and was continually prosecuted.

in 1996, a higher court in Sweden declared that the Skåne court that had convicted Vilks and essentially over-rules their judgement. Though this didn't stop the Skåne authorities from reopening the case in 1998. The existence of Ladonia has been about preserving the art present in their claimed land and creating more art; not only in Ladonia proper but also around the world.

Their banner, nicknamed the Glorious Green, was designed in 1997 but standardized in 2008. The flag follows a 13:21 ratio and the entire flag is the same shade of green. The stitching process allows the cross to appear on embroidered flags. They actually had to specify how to display the Nordic cross on printed flags, and it was to print a small white outline for the Nordic cross.

The purpose of Ladonia is all about creative freedom and freedom of expression. The majority of citizens join (buy a citizenship) Ladonia to advocate for their ideals and preserve the legacy of Lars Vilks.

In November 2011, an arson attack was carried out at the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, in response to its edition renamed "Charia (Sharia) Hebdo" with the prophet caricatured on the cover. One of the invitees was the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, who had made a film in 2008 linking terrorism and Islam. In May 2015 in the United States police shot dead two armed men who opened fire in a Dallas suburb in Texas near to a centre hosting a competition of Mohammed cartoons organised by the American Freedom Defense Initiative.

On 11 June 2007, Vilks was invited to participate in an art exhibition on the theme "The Dog in Art" (Swedish: Hunden i konsten) that was to be held in the small town of Tällerud in Värmland. Vilks submitted three pen and ink drawings on A4 paper depicting Muhammad as a roundabout dog. At this time, Vilks was already participating with drawings of Muhammad in another exhibition in Vestfossen, Norway, on the theme "Oh, My God". Vilks, who is a known proponent of institutional art, has stated that his original intention with the drawings was to "examine the political correctness within the boundaries of the art community". According to Vilks, the art and culture communities in Sweden repeatedly criticize the United States and Israel, whereas Muslim values are rarely even questioned.

Following the publication in Nerikes Allehanda, the Swedish police raised the security level around the newspaper's headquarters and some of its employees have been forced to use bodyguards after receiving death threats. Vilks himself has also received several death threats. One Muslim woman in western Sweden has been arrested on charges of issuing a death threat (Swedish: olaga hot) against Vilks in an e-mail. The woman confirmed in police interrogation that she had written the mail and said that she did not have any regrets about it. On 6 September, one actual roundabout dog created by Vilks and local children was set alight as an apparent threat.

On 15 September, it was reported that the group Islamic State of Iraq had placed a bounty of at least $100,000 on the head of Lars Vilks and $50,000 on Ulf Johansson, editor-in-chief of Nerikes Allehanda. The statement was found in an audio file on an Islamist website and was read by a person who identified himself as Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the purported head of the Islamic State of Iraq. "We announce a reward of $100,000 to anyone who kills this infidel criminal. This reward will be raised to $150,000 if he is slaughtered like a lamb," the statement said. The statement also threatened attacks on Swedish companies unless unspecified "crusaders" issued an apology. Vilks responded to the statement by saying: "I suppose this makes my art project a bit more serious. It's also good to know how much one is worth".

Nimis

Okay, now, you probably wouldn't know of this unless you live in Sweden, or have an appreciation for totally badass, punk art. Nimis, as it is called - from Latin "too much" - is an art installation by Lars Vilks and looks like this:

It's a collection of structures standing on the coast of Skåne - in the south of Sweden - since 1980. It's made of driftwood, old planks and assorted tree branches.

Nimis is interactive and open for anyone to visit.

BUT! Here comes the totally awesome thing about it all. The artwork was built on Kullaberg nature reserve illegally and has been involved in several juridical processes since the artwork's conception, as the local authorities are trying to get rid of it. Nimis has also been burnt at different points and after the fire in 2016, and consequent rebuilding of the structure, it led to fines in 2018.

However much the resistance, Nimis continues to stand, and is an appreciated place to visit for both locals and tourists.

Lastly, it has been said by Vilks - the artist - that the continued juridical problems are just part of the art, as it is part of the art's concept.

A Swedish artist who sketched the Prophet Muhammad's head on a dog's body has died in a traffic accident, according to local media.

Lars Vilks was reportedly travelling in a civilian police vehicle which collided with a truck near the town of Markaryd in southern Sweden.

Two police officers were also killed and the truck driver was injured.

Vilks, 75, lived under police protection after being subjected to death threats over the cartoon.

Lars Vilks, the Swedish artist who stirred worldwide controversy in 2007 with drawings depicting the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog, has been killed in a car crash.

The 75-year-old died on Sunday in an accident near the southern town of Markaryd, Swedish police said in a statement.

Vilks, who had lived under police protection since the drawings were published, was travelling in a police car that collided with a truck.

The car, which had left Stockholm and was heading south, veered into the path of the truck and both vehicles burst into flames.

Two police officers were also killed.

The truck driver was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police said they did not know why the car drove into the wrong lane but they were investigating whether a tyre might have exploded.

The car transporting Vilks had puncture-proof tyres, police said. However, exploded tyre remains were reportedly found on the road.
