I wanted to share one of my favorite experiences as a wrestling fan. I had to the opportunity to meet the legendary wrestling valet, ‘ The Perfect 10 ’ Baby Doll. She was one of the top valets in the 1980s. She accompanied Dusty Rhodes , Tully Blanchard , Ric Flair , Jake The Snake Robert’s , The Midnight Express , Larry Zbyszko , Gino Hernandez , and others. She started out as a wrestler named Andrea The Lady Giant. This gimmick was a punk rock inspired one. I have to say, she is one of the coolest legends I’ve ever met. She is super nice and I loved meeting her. I can say she’s the reason why I’m a valet myself. Thank you Baby Doll for being so good to me and other fans. Thank you for inspiring me to get into the business to be a valet.

In these works, I am documenting the social scene. In specific, a particular DJ in Miami, a special group of friends, and certain moments I find in the events. Originally, I wanted to capture the lack of intimacy seen at these events and at the same time evoke emotion via these images by focusing on the intimacy between the camera and the subjects. As I continued to photograph the events, I realized I want to tell a story, that story Is the party; the calm before the storm, the moments during the storm, an overview of the storm as a whole, and the aftermath. Although the focus is no longer tied around the subject of “Intimacy” there is still intimacy between my subjects and I whilst documenting those specific moments.

I wanted to show the moments before the event, whilst arriving, and all the odd scenes one might witness like an individual in crutches, or another bent over tying their shoes. These scenes are calm, and foreshadow the upcoming photographs through the use of clothes and looming figures. Afterward, capture the chaos and the energy that ensues during “the storm”, the frenzy-like crowd packed together like sardines, the lust-filled interactions amongst the crowd, the eye of the storm (the DJ), the peak of the story. Finally, I captured the moments after all the damage has been done, and the residual energy carries the individual throughout the night. As a whole, the story told is one of the life of energy in the social aspects of humans and their interaction with one another and my camera's ability to document these scenes.  

Process: The tools I used to create these images are: Digital Camera, Bridge, Photoshop, and Light Room. After I made my selection via Bridge, I opened each photograph in photoshop and proceeded to edit them as regular photos, assigned an SRGB profile, worked the white balance and color balance, cropping, masking, adjusting, etc… Then transferred the photo to lightroom to apply a “vintage” style preset of mine and then exported as PNG or JPEG. Uploaded to Instagram.

I took inspiration from Larry Fink’s Social Graces to create these works and if I had time to push my concept further, I would attempt to recreate more scenes like his, and learn to shoot better compositionally shot photographs such as Larry Fink's. I might even see if I can find a juxtaposition in the social scene I currently photograph in an attempt to document it such as Fink did.

Strat-O-Matic Opening Day At Glen Head, N.Y. Headquarters A Big Hit For Fans

They began lining up at 2 a.m. At least that’s the reported time that the first guest appeared at Strat-O-Matic Headquarters on Railroad Avenue, in the shadow of the Glen Head Long Island Rail Road stop. The first of what grew to more than 200 hearty souls braved near-freezing temperatures Friday in order to be among those to get ahold of the new baseball season cards fresh out of the warehouse.

In what has become an annual tradition, gamers from across the country – and sometimes other parts of the world – gather outside the blue-gray offices, not only to pick up the new season game and other items, but to meet friends old and new who share a love for the game that has been such an important part of their lives.

By all accounts, Bret Sypniewski traveled the farthest, getting into his customized white cargo van and traversing the country all the way from Las Vegas, where he took orders of his own for upwards of 30 games from friends and competitors at the various tournaments that he’s participated in regularly since retirement.

“It took me about 10 days, I took the scenic route,” said the affable Sypniewski, who has played the game for more than 35 years, a time frame that seemed to match many of the Opening Day participants. “I enjoy the tournaments, playing face to face, getting to interact with people while we play.”

Sypniewski made the Strat-O-Matic visit the fulcrum of a trip that included stops in Lubbock, Texas, for some hiking and a Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball game, another in Lexington, Kentucky, for a UK game and various other activities. His diverse interests match the variety of Strat-O-Matic baseball seasons that he enjoys playing.

“I enjoy playing the 1911-1930 teams, but I’m picking up the new season and 1984,” he added. “I like the old time stuff, I learn a lot about the players.”

Another highlight for Opening Day attendees is meeting the Strat-O-Matic founder and creator, Hal Richman, who enjoys hearing fans talk about the decades of enjoyment that the game has brought them.

Strat-O-Matic Chief Content Officer John Garcia presided over the Opening Day ceremonies, which included the induction of three members into the Strat-O-Matic Hall of Fame, including former major leaguer and noted SOM enthusiast Keith Hernandez, longtime game tester Larry Foster and Strat-O-Matic Forum editor Dan Patterson.

Garcia and CEO Adam Richman also raffled off some unique items, including test cards from last year’s 1933-1983 All-Star baseball set, a game autographed by Hal Richman, a subscription to the pending release of Baseball Max, currently in beta, and more.
