Who wants to hear the biggest bullshit I've ever experienced and how I narrowly avoided getting scammed out of thousands of dollars?
Buckle up, y'all!
If you've followed me for a bit, then you know I'm moving across the country to live with Alex this week, we're currently in Indiana on our way! However, yesterday my belongings were supposed to be picked up by the moving company. Well, no, they were supposed to be picked up Friday, that was the agreed pick up date but that day when I called they said that there was a two day window -- so they were supposed to arrive 2-4 but then they didn't even get there until almost 8 pm.
So, they were late and then they had the gall to tell me I had more items than they expected and that they hadn't allotted enough space based on my estimate, without even really looking at what I packed. I had told them exactly what I'm bringing and they'd underestimated the amount by 114 cubic feet (which is over $500 off). They said they could take what they could fit in the original estimate space, and anything else would have to stay, or I pay them an extra $1000. I said no, absolutely not, I don't have $1000. So, my sister, my step-dad, and Alex all went to bat for me over this while I'm having a panic attack in the passenger seat of my car. The customer service decided to condescend to not one but two of them by questioning their intelligence and asking if they know what an estimate is. Then, they said that I'd have to pay that day to get it moved, but I was never told I'd have to pay for it the day of pick-up. I said no, and to cancel it. Then the woman on the phone asked me if my dad could just pay it for me as if I'm not an entire adult.
Looking up the company afterwards, I found out that they do this often, and have plenty of complaints on BBB. I did do research beforehand, but if you look up their name "Allegiance Moving and Storage", what comes up is an entirely different company with great reviews, and I feel stupid for being fooled. They also have a tendency of charging people thousands before they will deliver, if they deliver it at all.
When I was setting up the service with them, they sent me agreements to read over and sign. Instead of being an attachment you could easily download and keep for your record, they were links that expired and can't be reached without contacting customer service. So, my stuff is in New York except for a couple bags of clothes and my laptop bag, I don't have a back up plan, and I'm probably not getting my deposit of almost $900 back.
So... Here I am again.

UPDATE 5/22/23:
I have booked a U-Box, and thankfully I can pay for it in little chunks, and it'll be just under $2000 for it to be dropped off, picked up, and shipped to our new place!
If you've got anything to spare, it will go straight to getting my balance with UHaul!

My chest is still very tight and I have pains under my ribs but I did feel better today. Just kind of over tired. I had a lot of trouble just connecting and having conversations where it normally would have been fine. Like I still had the conversations, but it felt like it took a lot more effort and that I was being weird. I just needed some rest.
It was a nice day though. The air felt normal. The weather was absolutely beautiful. I was looking forward to sitting outside and selling some stuff but mostly just working on my knitting project.
James got us together. I was not my best self but my eyeliner was good and my hair was nice. It would be very windy at the market but it didn't bother me. I had a flannel and would be comfy.
James helped me unload when we got there. I was for sure moving slow but I still only took like 10 minutes to be fully set up. Rosia was the educator inside today and she came out and was my first sale!! She bought my one very very large frog and just absolutely made my day. Thank you Rosia.
And I would have a pretty good sale day. I made $99. My two little friends that come with their change were back and used multiple dollars to try and win stickers. They ended up winning 4 before I had to tell them no more. Going to cost me money because of the printing cost of the stickers. The boys at 5 and 7 and I think they understood in the end.
They are so sweet though. I would give the 5 year old, Santiago, a coloring sheet, and his brother the 7 year old, Sebastian, and him would also try my loom which was super precious. The mom kept asking if they were okay, if they were bothering me, but honestly they are so soft spoken and sweet I didn't mind at all. They gave me a 500 pesos coin from Columbia! Neat!
And I did have other very good conversations. Merril came with her friend and they bought a few things. I also got a big hug which was so sweet. James got us both pies from Ginny. James got key lime and I got banana pudding. I would also buy sour cherries and strawberries to use to make a cheesecake dip tomorrow for the end of the year party tomorrow. I did not eat a million of the strawberries. I would wait until I got home and only had a few.
Stanley came out and hung out with me for a bit. Helen gave me a flower when she saw I was foraging the broken leaves and pedals on the ground to make pressed flowers. Super nice of her. Her and Anne laughed at me when I went to get a paperback book from my car and the pages barely close but I think it works really well. Forms down better then a hardcover. Though I would like to get an actual large flower press someday. I have a palm sized one but I just find it a bit to small for most things I find.
The end of the market really couldn't come fast enough. My ribs still feel swollen and I feel very top-heavy. And I was really looking forward to going home.
Meril told me to come say goodbye to her inside the museum while I was saying bye to James. I didn't have my wagon so it took a few trips to get everything packed away. And then I went inside and took over the desk so James could get us 711 pizza.
I chatted with a few people. Got a few visitors in. Joked with the dog treat vender from the market when she came in and was flabbergasted to see me at the desk. And then I went home.
When I got back to our neighborhood I remembered there was a block party so I had to take sort of a silly way to get back to our street. But it was fine. I got my two big bags inside. My totebag with all my purchases and moneybox, and Jamess laptop bag. And I was very very winded which sucked a lot.
But it was fine. I got things put away. I was getting ready to go take a shower and I remembered I wanted to clean the air conditioner filter and I'm glad I did because it was absolutely caked. From dirt but also the smoke I'm sure. It could not have been helping my chest. So I vacuumed and wiped that down and it's much better now.
I got my shower and then had a few bites of the banana pudding before I went and laid down. I would be out like a rock for almost 2 hours.
When I woke up I felt a little disoriented. James was at a baseball game for a few more hours. Apparently making friends with a baby. And I got up and made a sandwich and decorated another house in animal crossing. It was fun.
I would get back in bed after that. And just watched tiktoks until James got home. Their team won so that's nice. And they would have a little dinner and take a shower and join me in bed to watch more tiktoks.
And that's where we still are. I am getting bleary eyes and breathing deeply isn't comfortable but I know I will fall asleep soon.
Tomorrow I hope to go to the grocery store first thing and then make my things for the party. I don't know who else is going but I am looking forward to it still.
Sleep well everyone. I hope you are feeling good!

Cheap PC Challenge 2023 Part 10
youtube
Fudge.
December 1. One Month remains. The rules are:
Build a Windows compatible PC where the CPU, GPU, Motherboard and RAM cost less than $100
Run Passmark version 9 Cpumark. Your score in the challenge is your CPUmark score divided by 100.
Run the Lost Planet performance test at default settings. Your score is the FPS in the Caves section of the performance test.
Run the Google Octane 2.0 benchmark on a browser that completes the test. The score is your Octane score divided by 1000.
Official Change: +10 points for every dollar the build is under $100. -10 points for every dollar the build is over $100.
Simple!
Except.... we can rewrite that last rule to say: You start with 1000 points, in addition to the sum of your benchmark scores. You lose 10 points for every dollar you spend. Let's see.... fair enough to ignore the price component for our slow build, otherwise you could just spend your score down as far as you want to, while being frugal is penalized. For the fast computer tho...
Tumblr media
A $10 potato outscores a $100 workstation. That's kinda frustrating. On the other hand, any procrastinator who hears about the rule change will be trying to make their build as cheap as possible.
What to do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Worth a shot.
Tumblr media
TIGHT!
Tumblr media
Pooooop.
Tumblr media
TIGHT!!!
Tumblr media
Not half bad.... sorry about the glare.
Tumblr media
Less than amazing, but I'm listening.
Tumblr media
nice.
Benchmark score: 146.723 Points. Price: $6.25. Final combined score 1084.223. Boom!
I guess we come to the moral.
I don't know that there is one. A 12 year old, BIOS locked laptop bought for loose change benchmarks as well as an 8 year old workstation that cost as much as a casual dinner out. And if the Octane score says anything, they both probably benchmark respectably close to this Macbook that I spent most of a paycheck on a couple years ago.
Looking further back in time, even as the scores dropped from 500, to 100, to 16, every computer felt like points on a continuum, some faster, some slower, but no real change in character all the way down. It was only when I fired up my very slowest, nastiest (working) build running one of the worst incarnations of the family, of the worst (CPU) generation in the last (human) generation and change that I finally felt like Wow! This sucks! I'd never be able to use this computer for anything.

okay they’re gonna have to reset my computer and software issues aren’t under warranty and the guy can’t even find the problem so fuck it i’m fixing my computer myself.
solution number one: purchase an external WAN thingy to bypass the issue and hopefully be able to move on without actually repairing the problem
solution number two: do a hard reset myself. it can’t be that hard and if it doesn’t work then i’ll know the tech ppl were wrong
solution number three: somehow come across 16 hundred dollars and replace my computer with one that has an intel core (kinda what i want to do but so incredibly impractical and stupid)
i do not want to reset this computer setting it up was such a pain and i can’t see how there would be any issue with my windows key because the only problem was wifi
and i’m so used to working with tech that’s a bit broken it probably won’t bother me much. half the usb ports on my last computer just didn’t work, i didn’t have a headphone jack on my 2013 macbook for a year or so and its bluetooth didn’t work, the laptop i’m using now struggles with having more than one tab open at once (i usually have around 60), i’ve used all my available space on the school computers and adobe stops responding every time i save, the volume buttons on my phone only work sometimes, and even my harddrive just refuses to get ejected sometimes… my cd player can’t read cds anymore, the tone knobs on my guitar don’t work, and the lead for my amp is broken as well as the gain and the reverb knob, pretty much nothing i own works the way it’s supposed to but you learn to deal with it i guess…
also i’m on my fourth computer of my highschool era :/ (technically my second atm since the fourth is uh broken so i’ve returned to number 2)
computer no.1 was my dad’s old macbook that we got for free from his work, which was great thru years 9, 10, and 11, until one day jt just stopped. apparently the motherboard failed and it would cost around $500 to get it replaced, but i was getting an ipad for christmas like the next month so we just left it.
it turns out, ipads are fucking garbage if your school almost exclusively uses google docs and i had a bit of a breakdown in the middle of the year because of lots of reasons, so my parents got me the cheapest computer available.
computer no.2 was a lenovo. it sucked so much and could only really run chrome, but i needed adobe for design work, as well as video games n whatnot, so for a time i had a two computer system made up of my school computer, for school, and my mum’s old work dell that we got for free. it was old, and slow, but it had heaps of memory and i could game, use adobe, and it had a massive screen and keyboard, but the battery only lasted a few hours and i wasn’t supposed to take it to school cuz it was too heavy (that didn’t stop me)
so that’s computer no.3 and it was great. i used it for everything, including learning how to code and make video games which i really need for uni. like it is essential for university that i am able to access unity and unreal engine, and much of my social life was on minecraft so gaming was also pretty important. during the summer holidays, i got bored, as one does, and got out my macbook which according to the guy at the shop was 100% dead and would never work again unless we paid $500. anyway i charged it and it turned on sooo fuck that guy i guess. it was about 9 years old at this point but it ran the sims really well and i used to prefer the macbook keyboard so it was fine. the battery life was, umm, not long, but it worked which was cool.
pretty much as soon as my macbook started working again, my dell started going haywire. several hundred dollars worth of repairs later, nothing had changed, and i was screwed. my macbook was awesome, but also ancient, and had 7gb of storage, and the programs i needed were a touch more than that…
so when there was no hope left for my dell, i made a deal with my parents. as a graduation gift/christmas present/you’ll need this for uni for my brother, my parents got him a gaming computer. as such, i was to receive a gaming computer later that year (so this christmas) for uni. so my parents agreed to get me my christmas present early because i needed a good computer for school (i bargain a lot with presents, like my old thing was ‘if i get a job these holidays i’ll pay you back’, a new phone because the screen literally fell out of mine was a christmas/birthday combo (my brother’s new phone was just a christmas present tho) so this was not unexpected for either party) it took many months to actually get my hands on a new computer for long complicated reasons, and during that time, my mac shut down again.
however! at long last! i got a gaming computer! it’s an asus tuf gaming thingamajig and it was awesome! until the gpu went into extreme power saving mode and i had to quickly learn what a device manager was and also how to install drives and whatnot… i got the hang of it and for a few months, things were smooth sailing
then, mere weeks before my mock exams began, at a time when deadlines were drawing near and a good computer became essential, it stopped working… it no longer connected to the internet… and, it has left me with the predicament above…
my mac works again, though the battery lasts about a minute, but i’m back to the lenovo, which i am extremely grateful to have and while it’s a shit computer i did finish writing my book on it and it has served me very well… i’m incredibly lucky to get to access a computer at all, let alone be able to replace them, but also i think i’m fucking cursed
like yeah 2/4 of these computers were literally decommissioned and given to us for free, but the amount of shit that goes wrong with my tech is ridiculous!!
when my brother got his gaming computer nearly 4 years ago, he left it open outside in the rain!!! it got soaked!! AND IT WAS LITERALLY FINE!!! i have the newer version of his computer, and i dare to use it for its intended purpose and it craps out on me!??!?
the computer i’m using now literally doesn’t have a functioning cooling fan!! i don’t know if the fan is broken or if it just doesn’t have one but it never turns on
anyway i think i might be cursed… like newt

We received a modem from Comcast that has two phone jacks
Motorola MG7550 vs Netgear Nighthawk C7000 The sort of building you're in and the quantity of other wireless signals nearby will both have an impact on the range you'll get. The range in a suburban home with drywall inner walls is very different from the range in an apartment with concrete walls. The findings are significantly influenced by the client you are using (laptop, tablet, phone, etc.). An impartial research by Netperian compared the transmission rates and coverage of various AC1900 cable modem gateways. Wow, the triple play provided amazing service for my family, however we (I) needed to relocate nearer to her family. We received a modem from Comcast that has two phone jacks. On a monthly basis, Comcast TV/Movies, however, was consistently recycled (showing the same movies day after day). I upgraded the plan to include phone and internet service. A variety of building types were used in the test, and speed ratings were taken in each building's rooms. Compared to Arris and Netgear, the Motorola MG7550 performed substantially better. You'll see that a few range numbers represent only a portion of the report's roughly 40 pages of content. In an open field, the MG7550 recorded average download speeds of 475 Mbps at 100 feet and 214 Mbps at 1000 feet. Compared to Netgear or Arris, those data rates were noticeably greater under the same circumstances. The fastest DOCSIS 3.0 services offered by major service providers are supported by the MG7550 at speeds of 250 Mbps and 300 Mbps. 32 channels down are not supported by the MG7550, but you won't get very far with just 32 channels. The following major increase in cable modem speed will make use of DOCSIS 3.1 technology. By eliminating unwieldy wiring and power adapter clutter, integrating the cable modem and router creates a secure connection and frees up desk space. The vertical design looks attractive in any house or workplace while saving space on shelves and improving cooling. Strong lightning and power surge protection as well as a two-year warranty are included to safeguard your investment. Cable Internet access is necessary. Its use has been authorized by Comcast Xfinity, Comcast Xfinity X1, Cox, Charter Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink, WOW, CableOne, and other cable service providers. Renting a cable modem can cost up to 156 dollars a year less.Savings may differ per cable provider and are based on Xfinity. Cable modems are incompatible with fiber optic, DSL, and satellite services from Verizon, AT & T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and other providers. (There is no phone jack on the MG7550.) By switching to the Model C7000 instead of your current cable modem and Wi-Fi router, you can save up to $168 annually on equipment rental costs. Note: Page 102 of the user guide contains information for troubleshooting. Verizon, Spectrum, Xfinity (up to 800 Mbps), and Cox (up to 500 Mbps) are the carriers with the fastest speeds (up to 400Mbps). The technology in modems is: The design made advantage of 328 channel bonding and DOCSIS 3.1. A built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1900 Wi-Fi, Power Boost, and DFS provides internet connectivity for Wi-Fi gadgets such smartphones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, HDTVs, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV.

It is reasonable to assume that, as someone who grew up close to a crafter's house, I was also a youngster who was quite interested in arts and crafts. However, since we started manufacturing things at home, a lot has changed. Now, we have machines that can assist us in doing half of a hard task flawlessly and effectively. Just have a look at Cricut; their equipment is incredible for precise work, and in most situations, all you need is a good laptop to get started.
If you've been seeking for the best laptop for a Cricut around $500, you've come to the correct page. In this one, we'll examine at every laptop available for this purpose and show you how to use them effectively. I do realize that most individuals could be perplexed by these issues, but after you consider all the wonderful possibilities, you'll be in a lot better position.
So how can one tell whether a laptop is reliable? Fortunately, unlike other jobs, using a Cricut does not need a powerful computer or laptop. In most circumstances, you need a laptop with a clear, sharp screen, a strong processor, and adequate RAM; if it has all three, you're ready to go. However, this poses a new difficulty because you must sort through hundreds of computers only to select the proper one. Do not worry; with this compilation, we will simplify everything for you.
