Mesembs are succulents that mimic their environment, they are among the most drought-tolerant plant species. See how this faceted-quartz-like Karoo rose (Lapidaria margaretae) matches its habitat (white quartz plain in Namaqualand) perfectly in South Africa.

I started to doubt if my lapidaria had been pollinated or not because nothing seemed to happen. So I brushed off the dried off flower and surely this green little thing means seeds are in the making. I’m giving it a little fertilizer when I water due to the possible seeds, fingers crossed.

"Pero si es un cuento, aunque sólo sea en mi imaginación, tengo que contárselo a alguien. Nadie se cuenta un cuento a sí mismo. Siempre hay otra persona. Aunque no haya nadie. Un cuento es como una carta. Querido, diría. Tan sólo querido, sin nombre. Porque si agregara tu nombre , te agregaría al mundo real, lo cuál es más arriesgado y más peligroso: ¿quién sabe cuáles son las posibilidades de supervivencia? Diré querido, querido, como si se tratara de una antigua canción de amor. Querido puede ser cualquiera. Querido pueden ser miles. Te diré que no corro un peligro inminente. Haré como si me oyeras. Pero no está bien, porque sé que no puedes".

Dear Margaret now!
I hope you're thriving with your human, with all the best soil and good light conditions. Thinking about those tho, do you need a UV lamp for the winter?
"Hi!" she giggles, waving at you as you enter the apartment. "It's so good to see you again! It's been too long. Are you well? Help yourself to something to eat and drink from the cupboards or the fridge, and then come and sit down and tell me all about what you've been up to since you were last here."
She appears to be thriving, with a healthy pink blush to her jade green features, and she's smiling and laughing, and clearly delighted to see you. She gives you a big, squishy hug when you've helped yourself to something to drink.
You chat with her for hours, sipping your drink while she listens to your stories from her perch on the table in the middle of the living room. She starts to yawn after only a while though, and you frown in concern.
"I'm sorry," she says, looking genuinely upset. "It's winter now, you see. I get very sleepy. I'm dormant for half the year, but mostly over the winter in these parts since summer isn't exactly the hottest here. I knew you were coming over though, so I stayed awake for you. I'll have a nap once you're gone. Please, finish your story?"

I'm trying so hard not to kill another Lapidaria margaretae. I'm certain the yellow leaves are just the next to dry up, but the next pair up were wrinkly so I gave her a sip of water. Over watering these guys is SO easy. This is the only plant I have that I don't bottom water and is in a 2:1 perlite/soil mix.

This is the bulk of my haul from the cactus and succulent society show and sale I happened to find out about about a week ago and managed to visit today --- I am beyond thrilled to finally have some conophytum to add to my garden, as well as that lovely lapidaria margaretae. The thick stemmed tiger jaws was also a last second find --- can't wait to repot these!

I’m new to these wonderful weirdos, lapidaria margaretae and I think I managed to pollinate it, knock on wood. I don’t know what they should look like when they are withering but I think it looks a little swollen and that’s usually what pollinated flowers look like so I hope I did it and I’ll have some seeds to sow.

My babies. With sharp eyes, you can see the small twins at lower left. There's six in total, the only one not pictured is the socially withdrawn vagina plant in edge of the seeding pot. It has so much chlorophyll it's almost black and my camera can't pick it up. I think I'll call it Lee after @whataridiculousmod
