Dubrovnik
I had mixed feelings about visiting Dubrovnik, but was pleasantly surprised in the end. Pre-Covid it had become a prime example of over tourism, with vast numbers of cruise ship passengers and other visitors swamping the Old Town. Though very busy on a Saturday in early June 2023 it was reasonably straightforward to avoid the masses, by venturing down the backstreets or visiting the quiet…

Tangina dikit dikit. Mayghadd!!
NO TO JEEPNEY PHASEOUT!!!
NO TO PUV PHASEOUT!!!!
YES TO BETTER PUBLIC TRANSPORT!!!!
INUTIL SI MARCOS!

Dubrovnik day 1 -
We awoke and took in the views from the balcony. Becca went on a run to the top of the main hill in Dubrovnik while the rest of us lazed about. On her return we headed for the old town to do the “wall walk” (walking along all the fortified walls around the old city). This was listed as a “must do” in Dubrovnik pretty much everywhere but we were a bit surprised at the high prices when walking up to the ticket desk. Thankfully the guy took pity on us and told us after asking everyones ages and us truthfully saying the twins were 7, “those two are 6 today if anyone asks” and thus saving us the price of 2 more tickets. The wall walk was very scenic, slightly crowded and pretty darn hot (as Luka had warned us, so we brought lots of water). Soon after starting we met a family from LA with 2 kids of similar ages to ours and a dad named Matt (we keep meeting Matts everywhere this trip!). We had a good time talking to them a bit while exploring the wall and were particularly excited to see a basketball court with a strange bend in to fit it all in as well as some soccer goals down below. Our LA friends told us they were staying right by there and as far as they knew it was a free public court open to all comers. We then completed the wall walk loop in the heat with the requisite medium amount of child whining. Afterwards, we got gelato at Peppinos to celebrate and checked out the main drag in Dubrovnik and did some souvenir hunting as well. We then headed back to our place and changed into beach gear and checked out Banje beach which was just down the hill from our place and turned out to be rocky/pebbly (as most beaches here are) but otherwise super-nice. We relaxed/swam/played there for a few hours then hit the showers at our place (Matt also slickly negotiated a speedboat rental for the next day on the way home, talked the guy down by 80 euros but still didn't impress his shrewd negotiator of a wife). After rinsing off, we grabbed the soccer ball and headed out to find the free court we’d seen earlier. After only one wrong turn we located the correct court up a considerable amount of stairs and were surprised to find it empty despite it cooling off a bit in the evening and now being in the shade. We had a rousing game of soccer in which the parents clearly demonstrated their superior soccer ability to the children, then called it a day after everyone was tired and drenched in sweat. We then caught a bus to the suburb of Lapad in search of a Japanese restaurant that Matt had read about in Lonely Planet. It turned out to have a new name, but we still found it and after some waffling by the host who told us initially there was no table, the eventually told us they could seat us so long as we were done by 8:30 (it was 6:45ish on seating). We easily accomplished this time window and all enjoyed a variety of tasty sushi/noodle/curry/gyoza dishes which were a welcome change of pace after 2+ weeks of tomato/cheese/carb based meals. We then caught the bus home and tried to call it an early-ish night but still ended up getting kids down around 10 pm (the European lifestyle is rubbing off).
