Vietnam aims to start building two high-speed railway lines linking its capital Hanoi with China before 2030, the Ministry of Planning and Investment said, another sign of a recent warming of ties between the two communist-ruled neighbours.
China is Vietnam’s largest trading partner and a vital source of imports for its manufacturing sector. The two countries are already connected via a system of highways and two railway lines that are old and need upgrading on the Vietnam side.
One of the planned high-speed lines would run from Vietnam’s port cities of Haiphong and Quang Ninh through Hanoi to Lao Cai province, which borders China’s Yunnan province, the ministry said in a statement released late on Tuesday.
The other would run from Hanoi to Lang Son province, which borders China’s Guangxi region, passing through an area densely populated with global manufacturing facilities, including some owned by Chinese investors.[...]
Earlier this month, Vietnam said it was seeking to learn from China to develop its first high-speed railway network and had sent its officials to work with Chinese railway companies.
A massive high-speed railway line linking capital Hanoi with business hub Ho Chi Minh City is also being planned in the country.

Train street Hanoi has closed, only memories here
Unfortunately, in the early days of October, the famous Train street Hanoi had to close with visitors to ensure traffic safety here.
Train street Hanoi memories
Tourists come to train street Hanoi cafe to experience the thrill and to save the moment the train passed by them. But, it is also a place where death is only an inch away. In the neighborhood Kham Thien, Le Duan and Phung Hung (Hanoi), places with railways running suddenly attract a lot of foreign visitors to visit. Ms. Huong (Kham Thien – Dong Da street, Hanoi) said that on a normal day, there are more than 100 foreign visitors coming to the neighborhood to take photos. In the section of Phung Hung street near Hanoi railway station, the number of tourists visiting the railway line is up to several hundred times.
People built the North-South railway from the French colonial period. Unknowingly, people working in the railway industry began to build houses in the corridor area. Each house turned into a small village, from Long Bien station to the end of Le Duan street. For over 30 years, many generations have lived in this place. There are children born and raised attached to the tracks and trains.
Foreign tourists crowded the city cafes. They leisurely sipped their coffee, ordered a few beers and looked out as if they were waiting for something. Dung, the owner of a coffee shop, informed them that they came here because of the train. The reason why foreigners know this place is unknown.
The “sexy” curve of the railway crossing here attracts many international visitors. From the day he was published in a foreign newspaper as a must-visit place every time he came to Hanoi, the bustling streets of the streets.
But its quiet space has not been broken. Tourists everywhere to visit, are “cherishing” the village as the people here preserve it every day.
Foreign tourists often start to enter the ultra-narrow railway section at the intersection of Dien Bien Phu street or the intersection of Phung Hung street, and end the journey at Phung Hung street section after having a special experience. Now there is no need to go far, visiting the tourist railways, tourists have had “virtual life” photos as taken in Taiwan.
Other railway in Hanoi
Long Bien bridge
The train line running through the 100-year-old Long Bien bridge is also a famous check-in place for travelers. With the design of French engineers, here shows the nostalgic beauty of an ancient Hanoi.
In particular, sunrise and sunset are two ideal times to see the beautiful natural scenery from the bridge, Chuong Duong bridge and the whole Hanoi capital. Besides, visitors also witnessed firsthand the rusty steel frames and parts of the US army bombed the bridge during the war to save the country.
Gia Lam train station
Gia Lam Station is a major railway station in Hanoi, with many trains to the northern provinces such as Lang Son, Sapa – Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen and Haiphong …
There are many trains waiting at the station, combined with endless train tracks creating a romantic setting. On weekends, many couples come here to take wedding photos and tourists come to check in on this old rail beauty.

HANOI: It’s the kind of shot every Instagram connoisseur yearns for: century-old railway tracks cutting through dusty backstreets, flanked by tourists drinking beer or iced tea mere inches from the slow-moving trains.
The sight has become such a draw in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi that authorities have set a weekend deadline for the removal of dozens of cafes that have cropped up, citing safety concerns.
“I love it. It’s crazy, and completely different to anywhere I’ve been before,” said Australian tourist Laura Metze, after a train rumbled by.
“I can also see why they would close it down because it’s pretty dangerous.
Built in 1902 under French colonial rulers, the railway to Vietnam’s northern provinces carries passengers and cargo mostly between Hanoi and the eastern city of Haiphong, and the remote towns of Lang Son and Lao Cai, on the mountainous border with China.
It uses an old-fashioned French narrow gauge, and is so old that when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Hanoi in February for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, he had to stop at the border and continue by car.
In Hanoi, the line brushes the rear of houses and shops as it snakes through the city’s dense centre. Vendors stroll on the tracks, selling snacks on skewers, while some visitors sit on the railway lines and soak in the vibe.
In recent months, crowds of tourists have gathered along the railway to snap selfies with passing trains or lounge at trackside cafes.
On Sunday, a train had to make an emergency stop soon after leaving Hanoi railway station to avoid hitting tourists, state media said.
The next day, the city’s governing body ordered the cafes removed by Saturday to “ensure traffic safety”, at the request of the transport ministry.
“Though the railway cafes attract tourists, they are, in fact, violating some regulations,” Ha Van Sieu, a government tourism official, told media on Tuesday.
New and creative tourism products are encouraged, but must conform to legal regulations, Sieu added.
Vietnam received 12.87 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of this year, up nearly 11% on the year, government data shows.
