Historical/legendary figure three: Lann the Clever, Westerlands trickster figure and legendary ancestor of House Lannister.
The inspiration here is Ancient Greece and Odysseus; his hat is a petasos, which was a traveler's or farmer's sunhat heavily associated with Hermes.
Probably my favorite pose of the lot, right hand notwithstanding.

I have decided that demigod children of Garth Greenhand are under utilised in GoT/ASOIAF fandom and I am going to make that everybody's problem. Catch me smuggling Lann the Clever and Florys the Fox into every single one of my fics ever.

I'm interested in the theory of Lann being a woman , i know nothing really support it since every story regards him as a man but i got the feeling that he was at least looking androgynous and idk why lol. Anyways what do you think about this ? Wouldn't be more interesting for a house as powerful as rich and as ancient as the lannister to be found by a woman?
It's highly unlikely Lann was a woman based on the myths, though - he is very often said to have sired children with other women. He is a trickster figure, so, at most, he can be read in conjunction with the gender-bending properties they sometimes exhibit in world mythology. But, so far, George hasn't included a story like that associated with him.
There are a few legendary female figures said to have founded noble houses, mainly the daughters of Garth Greenhand:
Florys the Fox - Houses Florent, Ball, Peake Maris the Maid - House Hightower Rose of Red Lake - House Crane Ellyn Ever Sweet - House Beesbury Rowan Gold-Tree - House Rowan

HOUSE LANNISTER
Fair-haired, tall, and handsome, the Lannisters carved out a mighty kingdom in the western hills and valleys.
Through the female line they boast of descent from Lann the Clever, the legendary trickster from the Age of Heroes.
The gold of Casterly Rock and the Golden Tooth has made them the wealthiest of the Great Houses.
Principal houses sworn to Casterly Rock are Payne, Swyft, Marbrand, Lydden, Banefort, Lefford, Crakehall, Serrett, Broom, Clegane, Prester, and Westerling.
Their sigil is a golden lion upon a crimson field.
The Lannister words are Hear Me Roar!

What is commonly accepted is that the Age of Heroes began with the Pact and extended through the thousands of years in which the First Men and the children lived in peace with one another. With so much land ceded to them, the First Men at last had room to increase. From the Land of Always Winter to the shores of the Summer Sea, the First Men ruled from their ringforts. Petty kings and powerful lords proliferated, but in time some few proved to be stronger than the rest, forging the seeds of the kingdoms that are the ancestors of the Seven Kingdoms we know today. The names of the kings of these earliest realms are caught up in legend, and the tales that claim their individual rules lasted hundreds of years are to be understood as errors and fantasies introduced by others in later days. Names such as Brandon the Builder, Garth Greenhand, Lann the Clever, and Durran Godsgrief are names to conjure with, but it is likely that their legends hold less truth than fancy. Elsewhere, I shall endeavor to sift what grain can be found from the chaff, but for now it is enough to acknowledge the tales.

Tyrion's Heterochromia as an Analog to Lann The Clever Stealing the Sun
This is inspired by this post by @jackedup180 and further conversation with them.
Tyrion does not fit the mold of Lannister looks (fully blond hair, fully green eyes, and, in Tywin's and the rest of abelist Westeros' views, able bodied) and instead is this mix of both blond and dark haired, eyes both dark and bright, supposedly not looking like a Lannister 'should' look.
Tywin clearly thinks Tyrion isn't "truly" Lannister, and this is strictly because of his looks and his highly hyper visible disability:
"[...] Men's laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine. To teach me humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father's sigil and his father's before him. But neither gods nor men shall ever compel me to let you turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse."
However, Lann's looks weren't "Lannister" either. In reality (or actually, imagined history / mythic past) Lann wasn't blond, even if that part of the story is being de-emphasized.
"The Lannisters were an old family, tracing their descent back to Lann the Clever, a trickster from the Age of Heroes who was no doubt as legendary as Bran the Builder, though far more beloved of singers and taletellers. In the songs, Lann was the fellow who winkled the Casterlys out of Casterly Rock with no weapon but his wits, and stole gold from the sun to brighten his curly hair."
[AGOT, Eddard VI]
Lann The Clever didn't fit the mold. There was no mold, and there still isn't one now. There's no 'right' way to be or look a Lannister. The story itself is only a legend, a myth, a tale with no actual or very little basis in history:
"Names such as Brandon the Builder, Garth Greenhand, Lann the Clever, and Durran Godsgrief are names to conjure with, but it is likely that their legends hold less truth than fancy. [The World of Ice and Fire, Ancient History: The Age of Heroes] "It is highly unlikely that such a man ever existed; like Lann the Clever [...] the Winged Knight is made of legend, not of flesh and blood." [The World of Ice and Fire, The Vale: House Arryn] "Lann the Clever supposedly lived to the age of 312, and sired a hundred bold sons and a hundred lissome daughters, all fair of face, clean of limb, and blessed with hair "as golden as the sun." But such tales aside, the histories suggest [...]" [The World of Ice and Fire - The Westerlands]
Tyrion's looks stopped Tywin from seeing that he was the essence of what house Lannister was about, before Tywin's bizarre "traditional"-made-up house values that didn't exist until him. Tyrion is a trickster, Tyrion does use his words as his weapon and assets, Tyrion can and have tricked his way into getting what he wants - as we can see with his first trial in the vale, and his deal with the mountain clans.
Instead of acknolwdging that, Tywin prefers to see it as a fault of Tyrion:
"He closed the shutters, frowning. "You have a certain cunning, Tyrion, but the plain truth is you talk too much. That loose tongue of yours will be your undoing." "You should have let Joff tear it out," suggested Tyrion."
[ASOS, Tyrion VI]
Tywin can pretend forever that Tyrion is not a 'true' or 'proper' Lannister ("this was the last time I will suffer you to bring shame onto House Lannister." ASOS, Tyrion I), but in the end it is clear that Tyrion is both a Lannister in values, deeds and character, and inherently Tywin's true and undisputed son:
"Now that's where you're wrong, Father. Why, I believe I'm you writ small." [ASOS, Tyrion XI] "[...] But Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year. Men are such thundering great fools. [...]" [AFFC, Jaime V]
Also I just think being the og Lannister would be the cruelest and most fun revenge Tyrion could enact on Tywin <3
#tyrion lannister#tywin lannister#house lannister#meta#valyrianscrolls#lann the clever#mine#i took the basis from the conversation and rewrote it with text based close reading in a state of mania

If Rhaenyra married Daemon while Laenor was still alive and gave birth to Aegon and viserys, wouldn’t they be bastards too?
And if they are then Daenerys’ line shouldn’t technically inherit the throne. The next legitimate heir would have been Rhaena’s or Baela’s children but nobody knew
exactly anon, the show wanted to avoid the ‘bury your gays’ trope, but accidentally made bastards of all of rhaenyra’s children. or they could be legitimate: my personal pet theory is that the little rowboat that laenor escaped in was unfortunately ambushed by a mercenary ship, courtesy of daemon.
daenerys shouldn’t inherit the throne because the kingdom was rightfully conquered by robert, so she doesn’t have a claim to the IT by succession anymore. the targaryen line was replaced by the baratheon line. if we go by ‘lawful’ inheritance the rightful king is stannis and his heir is shireen, but again, the throne was (kinda) conquered by the lannisters, so now the baratheon line was replaced by the lannister line.
daenerys can win the 7K by conquest, and the ‘rightful heir’ thingy will only be a way to make her reign be accepted more easily. one big thing in asoiaf is that no one has an inherent right to the throne, and often the kingdom is gained by bigger army diplomacy. robert admitted it: he came and won the war, now he’s king. maesters brought up his grandmother rhaelle as a way to give him more legitimacy, but what could they do really? try and get him out of the throne and start another war?
if daenerys wins her conquest war the lords will make many excuses about her being ‘the rightful queen’ because she’s the last targaryen, but the truth is that no one can keep her from taking the throne even if she wasn’t. until another dude pops up and takes the throne from her and arguments about this new person being the rightful heir if we go by this tradition or blah blah come up again.
#sunny answers ☀️🍳#hotd#asoiaf#the game of thrones is literally dancing chairs but with more murders#daenerys targaryen critical#i love to criticize dany but also the dynamics of her not being rightful just being powerful is so interesting#does she have a claim to slaver’s bay either? no she doesn’t but who can really fight the girl with the big bad dragons#also i just realized that cersei got the throne by having bastards so that they could inherit the throne#just like lann the clever had bastards to replace the casterlys lol#cers the clever she would giggle#ANTI RHAENYRA TARGARYEN

#tywin wants to be a targ fire and blood house a lot but that’s not what the lannisters historically do at all #oh oh i’m a little birthday boy you wouldn’t hit a guy on his birthday ass house
big fan of tywin’s standard for being a lannister not even slightly resembling the history of the house it’s just something he made up. tyrion and jaime are extremely in line with the lannister legacy of guile heroism/being cunts but fail to live up to tywin’s vision for the house which never actually existed it references nothing
#considering i'm sure tyrion will sneak into casterly rock through its walls just like lann...#asoiaf#house lannister#tywin lannister#tyrion lannister#jaime lannister#lann the clever#yes good#queue and me we're in this together now

A while back I drew various historical Starks in neolithic-to-bronze-age clothing, and I decided to expand on that for various historical figures - from right to left, in clothes ranging from bronze age to late antiquity, we have Nymeria, Florys the Fox, Lann the Clever, Elenei, Theon Stark the Hungry Wolf, Daenys the Dreamer, and the Amethyst Empress.
Art notes beneath the cut:
Nymeria is inspired by ancient Sumerian clothing; her spear in particular is based on an artifact from Girsu, but with a stylized sunburst in place of its engraved lion.
Florys is inspired by pre-Roman Gaul; I wanted something similar but distinct from the Stark look, as the legend is part Andal and part First Men, plus the plaid dress was fun to draw.
Lann is Greek; his hat is a petasos, which is associated with Hermes and I thought would emphasize the trickster aspect of his legend.
Elenei is Minoan, which was tremendous fun to draw, though I did cover up her chest more than a Minoan woman would have. She's also shaded more sea-green, to emphasize the not-quite-human aspects.
Theon Stark is more or less a retread of my Bronze Age Brandon "Him They Called Ice Eyes," based on various burial artifacts in Denmark but with Vlad the Impaler's mustache and the crown of the North added to his hat.
I'm hardly the fist to make the Targs Byzantine, but there's a reason for that: it just works. It's also a significantly later period than everyone else, as she moves from "the mists of time" to "just pre-Conquest."
The Amethyst Empress is Shang Dynasty, though the jewelry is mostly fantasy. I really wanted to draw full trailing sleeves, hence the pose, but it turns out they weren't really a thing yet - though there were some excellent hats.
Brush credits to FireAlpaca.
