Land diving or Nangol is a ritual performed by the BRAVE men of the southern part of Pentecost Island (since the last few hundred years). It is the origin of BUNGEE JUMPING. Yes, this ritual started the idea of bungee jumping by Kiwi AJ Hackett, sees local men and boys as young as seven jumps off wooden towers around 20 to 30 meters (66 to 98 ft) high, with only two tree vines wrapped around their ankles. This DAREDEVILRY ACT occurs every year on Saturdays from April to June. ADBHUT KHEL Dekhana Jaroor. Would you or anyone you know be brave enough to try this extreme activity? Thanks, @whentobewhere for this amazing video. #simplyoffbeat #landdiving #peoplearecrazy #bungeejump #bungyjumping #daredevils #bungy #ajhackettbungy #bunjeejumping #bigjump #deathdiving #extremesportsvideos #xtremesports #extremediving #tribes #adrenalinelife #adrenalinemoment #wouldyoudare (at Vanuatu) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB0qstkD8u3/?igshid=1ry759qhpoe7i

This is Morgan’s third book. Perhaps the best copy I’ve seen, a thanks to @eurekabooks for sending this copy my way. I’ve just started breaking into Morgan’s cannon but so far I haven’t been disappointed. Powerful and succinct, he writes from the ground. I found a letter in Jim Wayne Miller’s archives where Morgan thanked him for helping To make Morgan aware of his surroundings of Appalachia as a viable and valuable resource for poetry. I’ve not started this work yet, and hopefully I’ll find a way to get it signed in the coming few days. Fine book in Fine jacket. . . . . . . . #robertmorgan #morgan #appalachianpoetry #appalachia #nc #cornelluniversity #firstedition #rarebooks #bookstagram #bookcollector #bookcollection #bookcollecting #bibliophile #poetry #americanliterature #shelfie #landdiving #bookporn https://www.instagram.com/p/BoA7AkQAieG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mjkkajn0t00m

June 23-25, 2018: Pentecost and Landdiving
June 23-25, 2018: Pentecost and Landdiving
We were ashore by 9 am, as requested by Luke, but of course island time prevailed and it was 11 am before the yachties and visitors from Vila and Santos were assembled. Snacks were offered for a few cents – laplap which was cassava stuffed with corned beef and cooked in coconut leaves.
When everyone was ready we walked up the steep hillside to the Nagol tower. Women cannot go closer than 20m…

Sometime scary things happen when you travel... Things don't always go according to plan. Today some of the Crooked Compass team flew to Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, to witness the world famous land diving festival. We arrived, we spent time inspecting the tower, I took this photo, (one of many) we saw the locals in their "sheaths" preparing to jump. Calls started to ring out through the surrounding jungle. We thought this was part of the festival. Then a mob came raging up to the tower bearing machetes and faces full of rage. These men hacked down this tower.... To the ground.... We bolted through the jungle to the airport and were back on the plane - this was the quickest departure you have ever witnessed. There is potentially no more land diving for the season (with the tower taking one month to construct) due to this outrage today caused by locals who are not happy with the new location of the land diving. If you are booked to experience this festival, please check with your ground operator for alternative options. We are safe and sound now, the tower however, sadly lays on the ground in pieces. #Pentecost #landdiving #vanuatu @vanuatuislands #outrage #festival
