Charles Dance and Sigourney Weaver in Alien 3 (David Fincher, 1992)
Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Brian Glover, Paul McGann, Ralph Brown, Danny Webb, Lance Henriksen, Hoyt McCallany, Pete Postlethwaite. Screenplay: Vincent Ward, David Giler, Walter Hill, Larry Ferguson. Cinematography: Alex Thomson. Production design: Norman Reynolds. Film editing: Terry Rawlings. Music: Elliot Goldenthal.
Alien 3 may be the sourest sequel ever made, completely negating in its opening scenes what made Aliens (James Cameron, 1986) so exciting: Ripley's heroic efforts to save the lives of Newt and Hicks (as well as retrieve what remained of Bishop). When Alien 3 begins, Newt and Hicks have died, making Ripley's efforts meaningless. And as if to rub salt in her wounds, she is forced to watch an autopsy of the little girl, just to make sure the alien isn't incubating in her. Not that what follows is much more enjoyable. What made Aliens and its predecessor, Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979), so entertaining was the interplay among its well-drawn characters. But there are hardly any characters besides Ripley in Alien 3. Charles S. Dutton and Charles Dance are fine actors, but Dance feels miscast as the brief potential romantic interest for Ripley, and Dutton is given little to do but deliver a homily at the cremation of Newt and Hicks and afterward to run and shout a lot as everyone fights the alien. Dutton's character, Dillon, is supposed to be the spiritual leader of a group of YY-chromosome inmates on the prison planet Ripley's escape pod crashes onto. The religious subplot feels superfluous -- it's apparently left over from an earlier version of the screenplay in which the prison was instead a monastery -- since the prisoners don't seem particularly devout; they mostly growl and leer at Ripley, the only woman on the planet, and a group of them try to rape her. This was the debut feature for David Fincher, who has since proved himself to be one of the more skilled and distinctive American directors, but making it was not a pleasant experience for him -- there were too many misfired attempts to get a workable screenplay, and the director who preceded him, Vincent Ward, was fired. It's mostly held together by Sigourney Weaver's performance and a few exciting action scenes -- though even these are marred by some confusing editing, especially the extended chase sequence through the corridors of the prison at the end. And Ripley's sacrifice -- which should have put an end to the series but didn't -- only adds to the general depression that permeates the movie.

First, there was the original The Blob (1958), covered by Decades of Horror: The Classic Era #123. After that, there was the sequel, Beware! The Blob (1972), braved by the Grue Crew in Decades of Horror 1970s #63. Then came The Blob (1988), an updated retelling of the original as imagined by Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell and discussed by a previous 80s Grue Crew in Decades of Horror 1980s #126.
Finally, the current 80s Grue Crew, having some contacts in the effects community, decided to do a deeper dive into The Blob (1988) with a focus on the film’s effects work and enlisted the aid of effects artists Jeffrey S. Farley and Ralph Miller III who worked on Lyle Conway’s blob crew. Ralph shares several mechanical devices used for blob manipulation and stories of the hard work put into the film. Jeff focuses on his work on The Blob, occasionally wandering to other aspects of his career, including Abruptio, his current release.
At the time of this writing, The Blob (1988) is available to stream from Peacock, Paramount+, PlutoTV, and multiple PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a Limited Edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray and as a Collector’s Edition [4K UHD] from Scream Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Cannibal Ferox (1981), directed by Umberto Lenzi with special effects by Gino De Rossi. Yup. It must be time for a film initially banned in 31 countries.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

Fundraising wristbands: small but mighty power
You'll find people wearing colorful silicone wristbands on their wrists everywhere in the U.S. Still not sure what they are? Don't be surprised! These moving colors are silicone wristbands, a fashion accessory, and a way for people to make their voices heard for a good cause. That's right! Fundraising wristbands have become a very important part of the US charity scene, from saving the planet and protecting the environment to supporting cancer research, there is a fundraising wristband for almost every cause.
The "colorful" origins of wristband
The story began in 2004, when the Lance Armstrong Foundation launched its iconic yellow "Livestrong" wristbands to support people affected by cancer. The simple yet powerful yellow wristband quickly became a global phenomenon, sparking a wave of customized wristbands. Nowadays, fundraising wristbands are associated with various charity events! Yes, that's a pink breast cancer support wristband, yes, that's a rainbow-colored LGBTQ+ affirmative action wristband, and fundraising wristbands of all shapes and sizes continue the wristband trend and have become an integral part of charity events.
Why are fundraising wristbands so popular?
First of all, fundraising wristbands are not only affordable and cheap, but also effective. fundraising wristbands are beautifully crafted and inexpensive, and can be customized with text, colors, icons, and more, so that the message conveyed through fundraising wristbands is direct and fast. Secondly, wearing fundraising wristbands is a very simple way to support the cause you are supporting, you just need to wear them on your wrist and show the world and publicize the cause you are supporting.
Plus, fundraising wristbands are great conversation starters and yes, fantastic! Imagine your friends seeing your fundraising wristbands and asking "What are those? You'll have the opportunity to talk about the cause you're supporting, and maybe that's how you'll get a new fundraising supporter!
Interesting case studies
Let's take a look at some success stories. in 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took the world by storm, but what you may not know is that the campaign also launched its own fundraising wristbands. while the Ice Bucket Challenge is better known, the sale of the fundraising wristbands has brought in a significant amount of revenue for the ALS Association, and also The sale of fundraising wristbands has also generated significant revenue for the ALS Association and has helped to publicize and promote the cause to a wider audience!
Let's take a look at "Team Hoyt", what does it mean? It's the name of a father-son running duo. The father, Dick Hoyt, has pushed his son, Rick, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to move independently, to over 1,000 races. To support their spirit and raise funds, they launched the "YES YOU CAN" fundraising wristbands. not only did the fundraising wristbands help them raise money for the treatment they needed, but they also inspired more and more people to dare to go! realize their dreams!
A little wristband goes a long way
Fundraising wristbands are more than just a fashion accessory, they represent hope, support, resilience and the future. fundraising wristbands are a small but mighty force, one person may be small but as long as there is light in our hearts, more and more light comes together, we have the energy to make a stone appear as a drop of water! Even the smallest support may be able to change the world. So, believe in the power of kindness!
Anyway, don't underestimate this little fundraising wristbands, the world is quietly changing because of the spirit of these wristbands. And you, are you ready to wear your fundraising wristbands?

Terrible news, Jimmy Rave has passed away.
You may remember Jimmy Rave from his run in ROH as S.C.U.M or with Lance Archer/Hoyt & Christy Hemme as the Rock ‘n’ Rave Infection.
He’s had an awful time with drugs and booze, and just last year he announced he had to get his left arm amputated due to an infection, and just 2 months ago he announced he had to get both legs amputated.
A real fucking shame, always terrible to see someone taken so young due to their demons.
