Petty Golfers
Warnings: Swearing, but what can you expect with a Ransom fic? Some cheesy, real bitchy moves. Bad depictions of golfing. Some suggestive material, but not rlly? Dad Ransom! There’s so much affection that I might have diabetes from all the fluff.
If you can’t tell, I suck at writing summaries and warnings. Please just take a leap of faith and read. It took me a week to write this and we are at a whopping 7k word count. So please leave some feedback, ik I sound desperate. Love y’all!
Summary: A trip to the country club with Ransom and his aristocratic friends goes south.
“Ransom! Your mother is on the phone!”
You were curled up on the sofa when Ransom’s phone rang, a picture of Mrs. Drysdale herself showing up. She rarely ever called, except to bitch at you or her son. Out of curiosity, you had answered the call, unknowingly becoming an victim to her demands.
“Get Ransom for me.”
“He’s on his way down.”
“Tell him to make it quick.”
Who the hell did she think she was? You rolled your eyes, annoyed at her demand. The phone that was once pressed against your ear, was now pulled away from your face.
“Ransom! Your mother is on the phone!”
A quick huff from your mouth made you regain composure, continuing your ‘conversation’ with the woman.
“Why did you answer my son’s phone, anyway.”
Linda’s tone was cold, just as when you had first met her. In the five years you had been with Ransom, not once had she shown you any form of kindness.
Sick of her impertinence, you shoved back a snarky remark.
“Well, I don’t know if you know this, darling, but I’m dating your son! Actually I’m even engaged to him!”
Her end of the line was silent except for a loud scoff.
It was about time that Linda learned you weren’t some obedient dog, cowering down to her like Richard or Walt would.
“That’s my girl!”
Ransom, thank the heavens.
Turning your gaze to the stairs, you saw Ransom wearing a smirk, sauntering his way over.
The man bent down to kiss your lips before swiping his phone. You could practically imagine Linda’s screeching fit to her son and husband about what just happened. Clearly, it was actually happening as you heard Ransom nonchalantly reply, “That's not my problem.”
You took this time to get cleaned up and ready, seeing Ransom was currently occupied and would be for at least the next hour.
This was the first time you were gonna go golfing with Ransom and his friends. It was pretty obvious they were all gonna show up in Castore golf clothing, while you opted to wear a coral Columbia polo shirt and navy skort, caring less about the name of the brand and more about its versatility.
After applying some minimal makeup, you walked out from the bathroom to take a peek in the bedroom mirror.
The coral polo was neatly tucked into the navy skort, stopping mid-thigh. Taking your hands, you slowly smoothed out the shirt, stopping on your small baby bump. About 22 weeks in, and you were already in love with this child.
“Hi, little lemondrop. Oh goodness, are we gonna have a long day, honey.”
As you talked to your baby, Ransom quietly snuck into the room, smiling at how great of a mother you are already turning out to be. In his mind, he figured at least the child would have one good parent figure.
“Hey Sweetheart, sorry to interrupt, but I found you some golf shoes that should be comfortable.”
You looked up into the mirror to see Ransom behind you, with a big grin on his face and a pair of white golf shoes in his hand.
“Thanks, Ran.”
A bashful smile spread on your lips as you took the shoes. A part of you felt guilty for him getting you these shoes, but you knew he didn’t mind. Unfortunately, your feet and calves had already started swelling due to the pregnancy induced edema.
A quick trip to the bed, and you sat on the edge, struggling to get your shoes on, while Ransom was in the closet getting changed into his own golf attire.
Ransom confidently stepped out in all his glory, a navy polo and some light khaki shorts, that clung to his muscular physique. Your eyes were glued to him in awe and like the cocky asshole he is, a smirk grew on his face.
“Like what you see, Babe?”
“Oh shut up, Drysdale.”
You threw your shoe at him which he so expertfully caught. He gave a teasing smile and raised his hands in surrender before making his way to the edge of the bed where you were sitting. Getting down on one knee, Ransom gently picked up your foot and put it in the shoe, tying the laces, but not too tight.
“Hmm, this feels vaguely familiar.”
Yup, Mr. Silver-Spoon Fed, was down on the ground, putting on your shoes. In his own words he’d only do the “Helps” part for you.
Once Ransom was done tying your shoe, he motioned to himself on his knee, trying to provoke the memory of when he proposed months ago.
Leaning forward, you placed your hands on his shoulder, and pecked his lips.
“I do.”
With a wink, you got up and left the room, also leaving Ransom on the floor, as he just chuckled to himself.
In all honesty you were dreading the day’s agenda. Ransom was taking you to the country club for a few holes of golf with his friends and their newest set of girlfriends.
Even though you had met Ransom’s friends and all, you could tell they had never liked you from the beginning. Eventually, with some work, Bently and Dylan warmed up to you. Without doubt, you understood why they were Ransom’s friends. They were exactly like him in every way, lifestyle and all.
In the years you had known the two men, Mallory and Samantha were the longest to stick around so far. Five months to be exact. This was an outstretched time of fidelity for the life-long playboys.
Maybe the men were trying to somewhat settle down like Ransom had.
The two women were standoffish from the start, always talking about things you never really cared about. Their lame attempt at trying to make you feel like an outsider was just straight-up annoying. When they did include you, it was a constant conversation about Ransom. You loved him and all, but if you were gonna be friends with these chicks, they might as well like you for you and not your fiance.
Out of all the ‘lady friends’ the guys had brought, Mallory and Samantha were total bitches in comparison to the rest. And no, you weren’t jumping to conclusions and making assumptions about these women. Life had given you a fair share of bullies back in your day.
This whole ordeal could be marked as the most uncomfortable thing you’ve done in your life.
Mallory and Samantha were anything but friendly, going on and on about a Versace fashion show, and some model, from last month. Inwardly you reminded yourself that you were doing this for Ransom, who was having the time of his life with Bentley and Dylan. How they could have this much fun golfing, was beyond you.
The three guys golfed while you three ladies stood watching and chatting. In a more accurate account, the three guys golfed while the two ladies stood watching and chatting about purposeless things in life, deliberately leaving you out.
Well, come to find out all along you really weren’t gonna play golf, you were just gonna watch. Yay, so exciting.
You would’ve played golf with the guys had Mallory and Samantha not opened their opinionated mouths and made the decision for you.
At this point Mallory and Samantha were now blabbering about some new type of leather purse and you really wished Ransom’s club would have hit your head at that moment. Anything to relieve you from having to hear their pathetic whining. The two women didn’t care to include you. Surprise, Surprise.  Apparently, you weren’t good enough to be in their aristocratic circle.
What the hell was this, high school?
“So how are you doing, (y/n)?”
It was odd how Samantha was actually trying to engage in a conversation with you. You just hoped that maybe this was her olive branch. These were Ransom’s friends' significant others and you were gonna try your damndest to impress them, not really wanting to stir up any drama if it weren’t necessary.
“I’m doing pretty well, thanks for asking. How about you two?”
Now both women were fully turned to you, their attention no longer on the men, more so Ransom.
“Dylan and I are gonna take a trip to Europe, not exactly what I wanted, but good enough I guess.” Samantha rolled her eyes and heartily laughed along with Mallory.
Her simple statement made your eyes almost bug out of your head. It was like an expensive trip to Europe to her was just nothing more than a drive across the state line. You swallowed harshly in an attempt to figuratively stomach Samantha’s words. Ransom regularly offered those luxurious things to you, but as always, you turned them down, claiming he was just enough. It was very true, though. You didn’t have high standards which took Ransom some time to get used to. Most women he was ever with, wanted things, extortionate commodities.
You didn’t want to ruin your only chance at a somewhat blossoming friendship, so you trepidatiously giggled along with them.
“Oh honey, did you gain weight? I know a great personal trainer, really cute too, maybe not as cute as Ransom though.” Mallory’s perfectly manicured hand motioned towards your growing stomach.
You just stared in utter shock at what she just said. To most people that would be offensive but then you remembered the crowd you were with. Judgemental.
“Umm, no-well, uh, I’m expecting.”
Sheepishly, you looked down at your feet, now noticing the difference between your choice of shoes and theirs.
Samantha was wearing those white oasis Hermes sandals she had mentioned earlier, while Mallory was sporting some gaudy rockstud Valentino stilettos. Yeah, they definitely did not come here to golf.
“That’s why Ransom kept someone like you around!”
And that was definitely not the answer you were anticipating. If anything, you figured they’d be gushing over your pregnancy like any normal person would.
“Oh Sam!” You saw Mallory nudge Samantha who looked at her in shock, immediately stopping her obnoxious laughter.
A breath of relief left your mouth as you looked to smile at Mallory in gratitude.
“I should’ve known it would take a fake pregnancy to get him!”
“Yeah, he can’t have a bastard child running around, now can he? He would never get laid again!”
Your smile collapsed.
Samantha and Mallory grabbed each other’s hand, careful of their bubble-bath groomed nails, yet laughing so hard that they had to support each other.
The three men looked over in the direction of the women’s giggles and smiled, returning back to their game, completely unaware of the real situation.
Of course they didn’t see you, because your back was to them. If they had, your impression of a deer in headlights would have most certainly piqued their attention.
Your jaw dropped and you couldn’t even comprehend what you just heard.
Holy hell, they were just egging it on, weren’t they?
It was then that you realized Mallory wasn’t trying to stand up for you just a minute ago.
So apparently the two women weren’t trying to become your friends at all. You were just their little toy to ridicule.
“Aww hon, don’t get upset! We are just joking around.”
Samantha gripped your shoulder tightly and you gave a tight lipped smile, in an attempt to show that you weren’t hurt by their idiotic antics.
As Mallory and Samantha turned to continue to stare at the men, you saw them roll their eyes, for the nth time.
“Joking, my ass.”
You just stared daggers into their backs, slightly wishing the daggers were real. How dare they insult you by saying you were “faking” it? They could joke with you, but definitely not your baby.
The motherly instincts were already kicking in apparently.
“Hey girls, wanna try?”
Dylan waved his driver club in the air trying to get your attention. You were in such a trance, anything anyone said was just tuned out, that was till two arms wrapped around your waist.
The simple action made you jump out of your own skin, ready to strike whoever was behind you.
“Jumpy, much babe?”
When you turned to be met with Ransom’s grin, a wave of relief swept over your anxious body.
“Huh, yeah. Sorry I kinda zoned out.”
“I definitelyyyy couldn’t tell.”
Crossing your fingers, you had hoped that Ransom wouldn’t question your edgy tone that came out with the sentence.
Luckily, he didn’t notice and instead unwillingly dragged you over the teeing ground where the rest of the group was standing nearby.
“So, who wants to go first?”
Bentley spun on his heel to face the caddy and pulled out a gap wedge, handing it to Samantha who giddily volunteered herself first.
“I’m not really sure what position, I should be in.”
Samantha held the club, elbows bent, and performed a lazy test swing, striking the grass.
“Ransom, could you help me? After all, you are the one winning.”
Her flirtatious wink made you wanna vomit. You practically held back the gag, not wanting to cause another scene. Ransom’s water bottle was in the cart. Deciding you couldn’t watch anymore you walked to go get the water that seemed life saving at the moment.
“Ok, so first off you are gonna want to spread your legs a little.”
Samantha moved her hips suggestively as she got into the proper stance.
“Is this the correct position?
Ransom nodded, not catching her drift at all. The way she said “position” was absolutely flagrant.
As you turned from the cart and back to the group, you saw Samantha pushing her hips into Ransom, her Prada dress, lacy, white, and most of all short, slid up just a hunch.
“Oh, good god I’m gonna be sick.”
Briskly, you semi-jogged towards the country club, not wanting to catch anyone’s attention.
No one had noticed your disappearance as expected and just continued on with the game.
Of course, you came back just in time for Mallory’s turn, who was also getting coached by your fiance.
“Don’t get mad, don’t get mad.”
The navy skort you were wearing, had to take the hit as you clenched your fists tightly, balling up the smooth fabric.
Mallory swung the golf club clumsily, her arms way out of whack. You just grimaced, these women were supposed to know how to golf for goodness sake. After all, golfing was a sport for the rich, at least in Mallory’s own words.
“Oh Ransom. I think I might need your help. How do I swing again?”
Ransom politely nodded and strode away from his previous conversation. He situated himself behind Mallory, her back resting against his chest, his arms encasing around her sides. The golf club was positioned in between Mallory’s long legs and the two of them slightly bent at the hips, Ransom’s hands over hers as they slowly swung the golf club a few times.
It finally came time for Mallory to actually swing. She insisted that Ransom help her, and of course he did. As they swung their arms over their shoulders, Mallory twisted her head and kissed Ransom’s cheek. The ball teed off and Mallory thanked Ransom once more.
“Thanks for all your help, Ranny.”
Mallory then leaned in to hug Ransom tightly, smirking when she saw your belligerent attitude.
You swore to yourself that you were living a movie because my god, was this so fake. No one in their right mind would ever have the guts to accomplish anything that had happened so far today. Quite the lucky streak you have, if I might say so myself.
“You wanna go, Momma?” A teasing offer came from Bentley, one you wouldn’t pass up.
Confidently, you smirked and walked over to grab a pitching wedge from Ransom’s golf caddy.
You were really ready to knock these women off of their damn high horses, it was time they joined you all in the corral.
“Gladly.”
The straight up sarcasm that dripped from your sneer thoroughly confused Ransom.
Straightening his posture, he quickly walked over to help you tee off too.
Normally, you wouldn’t have minded Ransom’s help, but at this moment you were fuming, striking the ball on the tee with great vehemence.
Shamelessly flirting with Ransom, even when they knew you were right there. The deliberate actions of your so called friends really was the last straw. You could normally handle the level of pettiness Ransom’s friends propounded, but you couldn’t take it anymore. It all flowed through your blood and into your swing.
Ransom’s eyes widened when he saw how you hit with a perfect form, swing straight and all. Your ball even landed on the green, closer to the end, unlike the two women who landed on the rough, even with his help.
“Well looks like Ransom got a good start, now.” Dylan shook his head in disbelief as Ransom winked at you, a token of his appreciation. Unfortunately, you were only seeing red and completely missed his action of affection.
“That’s impossible!” Samantha had a look of repugnance on her face. Visibly upset that she wasn’t beating you in this game of cat and mouse, insult edition.
Mallory then discreetly flipped you off, the guys too busy packing up in order to move further down the course.
“I’m over this shit.”  You walked away from the teeing ground and towards the swarm of people.
“You ready to move on ladies?” Bentley pointed towards the golf carts that were pretty much all packed up, except for the club in your hand.
“Sure!” Mallory’s overly peppy and fake voice was the last straw.
The two women started to walk away with the men, swaying their hips, every step taken with aplomb.
“No, you know what, Sam, Mal, who gives two shits about a Versace runway model standing three inches off center, because I sure as hell don’t.”
Bentley, Dylan and Ransom stood gaping with confusion at your sudden outburst. From their point of view, nothing extreme had gone down between you and the girls all day long.
You turned from the outraged women, disregarding their insults thrown your way and meeting the faces of the befuddled men.
“Sorry boys.”
“Oh and one more thing, girls. If you say one more shitty thing, so help me, I am gonna take Samantha’s Hermes heels and shove them so far up both your asses, you’ll be able to cough them up.”
You ever so gracefully returned Mallory’s kind gesture and flipped her and Samantha off.
In typical Ransom fashion, you turned away once more, basking in their shocked looks and ignoring their pitiful attempts at being the victims.
With that you handed Ransom the golf club which he gripped angrily, as you stormed off towards the women’s locker room. You could feel him practically burning holes into your back.
It was almost impossible to put in the combination to the lock for your eyes were welling up with tears. What made the whole thing worse was that Ransom didn’t even say a word, and he was angry at you?!
With a swipe of your hand, you wiped away the tears before grabbing your purse. You looked at Coach logo laughing when you thought of the Celine and Louis Vuitton purses Samantha and Mallory had.
When you had gotten to the country club, Ransom handed you the keys to the Beamer to put in your purse. His car was the only other thing he loved more than himself, you, and the baby. In reality, it was his first child.
Seeing the Beamer in the parking lot was like light at the end of the tunnel for you. Into the driver seat you plopped and the keys turned to the ignition. At the moment you could care less where you ended up, you just wanted to run for the hills and get far from here.
Sure, you were embarrassed, but you were more angry than anything else.
As you drove past the golf course you didn’t miss Ransom’s appalled look when he saw the Beamer leaving without him in it.
Back at the course, everyone stood around giving each other confused looks.
Dylan bravely broke the silence first.
“What just happened, man?”
Ransom just huffed and shook his head.
“No clue. Hormones probably.”
Samantha full on giggled while Mallory took the next step and grabbed Ransom’s bicep as she laughed.
“Thanks for making me laugh Ran, I really needed it after what just happened.”
Mallory looked up into Ransom’s deep blue eyes with her sparkling green ones and batted her long eyelashes at him seductively.
The clueless men took no mind in what was unfolding in front of them.
“Oh that’s right. Congrats dude!” Bentley supportively patted Ransom’s shoulder, before returning back to his own caddy at the cart.
Another shaky breath left Ransom’s mouth.
“Yeah, thanks.”
As Ransom headed back to the golf cart, he couldn’t shake the weird feeling inside.
What was it, you ask?
Concern.
He was concerned about (y/n).
A cloud of vexation and offense floated around in the car with you, that when you arrived at Harlan’s estate you had not even registered it quite yet.
The keys of the beamer were clenched tightly in your hand as you knocked, waiting patiently for Marta or Harlan himself to answer.
As the door swung open, it revealed a surprised and smiling Marta.
“Oh hi (y/n)!”
It was then that the weight of the prior events came crashing down on you and sobs were the only thing you could manage.
Marta quickly ushered you inside and enveloped you in a hug.
For the few minutes that passed, you had finally calmed down. Taking a deep breath you explained everything to Marta while she led you to the guest room you and Ransom normally stayed in.
“I’m so sorry for your terrible day, love. Why don’t you get cleaned up and you, Harlan and I can have some dinner?”
At the offer, you returned a small smile, but a genuine one nonetheless.
A hot shower would hopefully help clear your mind a bit. You padded over to the bathroom, starting the water and then returning to rummage through the wooden dresser. Thankfully, Ransom had left his maroon sweater and your leggings. Your first win of the day after a colossal shitstorm, maybe things were starting to look up.
The last thing on your mind at the moment was Ransom, who was supposed to be here with you. Just the mere thought of him, irked you.
When you returned from the long and much needed shower, you checked your phone.
Ten missed calls from Ransom Drysdale
Five text messages from Ransom Drysdale.
You just scoffed, turning off your phone. He definitely didn’t deserve an answer from you and you most certainly didn’t want to hear his lame-ass excuse. Was he even calling to apologize or was he calling to pester you?
Whatever.
The cell phone just rested on the bed, while you scurried downstairs to the smell of lasagna, tending to yourself with Ransom in the very back of your mind.
It had been about an hour since you left and Ransom couldn’t get in touch with you. Bentley and Dyaln had just left the table to get some more drinks at the bar, something Ransom clearly needed.
He called your phone once more, but to no avail, it went straight to voicemail.
Your sweet voice rang through his phone, oh how he wished you were here.
“This is (Y/n) Drysdale, I’m not here at the moment, please leave your name and number and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Have a great day!”
Ransom felt a sense of pride that emerged when you used his last name as your own. Never in a thousand years had he assumed he’d ever be married, until you came along. You charmed him with your humbleness and patience for his antics. So many things about you were good for that man. Long gone were the days of shunning off a committed relationship with his pinky ring that now rested upon your index. A small diamond engagement ring, another symbol of Ransom’s love, made home on your ring finger too. You, a beautiful vision in white, walking down the aisle, and he can already imagine it.
An annoyingly squeaky voice broke him from his enchanting daydream of you as his wife.
“Oh Ranny, just give up.”
Long fingers wrapped around the glass flute, bringing it up to the red lips of the vanilla-blonde woman.
“Excuse me?”
Mallory moved her drink away from her lips, resting her hand on Ransom’s right forearm that laid on the table.
“Well it’s no use to get in touch with Betty and the bastard. She isn’t gonna answer, clearly, but I will.”
Now he could see why you were upset.
They must’ve said something to you. What was really surprising though is that you’d never take shit from anyone. Why would you cower down now?
He mentally scolded himself, that was a question to ask you later. First order of business was to give these two lovely ladies a taste of their own bitter medicine. Revenge was practically the man’s middle name, unfortunately.
Ransom couldn’t lose the only thing in life that mattered to him. You brought him light in the darkest of his days. Family get-togethers always put him in a terrible mood, but when you were linked into his arm with a bright smile, things seemed a little bit more bearable.
Who cared about the consequences at this point, Ransom madly grabbed the bellini and spilled it across Mallory’s black Dior button-down dress.
“Don’t ever talk about my wife and child like that.”
The two women cried in disgust, popping up from their seats, prompting Samantha to drag Mallory to the ladies’ room.
Bentley and Dylan came back to the table, cackling, three Malibu sunset cocktails in hand.
Ransom was practically seething at this point, his jaw clenched as tightly gripping the glass Dylan was handing him.
“Woah man, what’s up with you?”
“Your petty ass girlfriends, that’s what.”
Many drinks later, Ransom had finally finished his story, Bentley and Dylan not believing anything the brunette spoke about.
“You’re bullshitting us, Drysdale. Maybe we should take your drinking privileges.”
Ransom’s signature smirk curled onto his face as he found his evidence.
“Look over a few tables, fellas.”
There was Samantha, her tongue down some guy's throat, Mallory wearing the other man’s large polo.
“Shit, man!”
Dylan dropped his glass onto the table in complete shock. He had really just assumed that Ransom was drunkenly hallucinating.
“I’m not here to listen to both of your problems, now help me go win my wife back.”
Bentley and Dylan weren’t even phased by Ransom’s forwardness, for they were both too caught up in their own drunken sorrow.
“Why? Can’t you see I have plans tonight with some rum?” Bentley motioned to the bar before chugging his own drink down.
“She-” Ransom hung his head in shame. “She-took-my-beamer.” In one quick breath the man made his embarrassing confession.
“Fine, it’s only because I like your wife. She’s good for you ya know.”
“Yeah, yeah, just get your drunk asses out of here.” All three men doubled over in cachinnation due to Ransom’s quip.
Like expected, Bentley and Dylan continued to tease Ransom before going off to get some water in hopes of sobering up, coming back with two women instead.
A small snicker left Ransom’s mouth. He could remember the days when that was him, but now was much happier and satisfied to always come home with you.
You were ecstatic to be greeted with Harlan’s large and welcoming smile. The man was basically your grandfather.
“Well there’s my favorite granddaughter and soon to be great-grandchild!”
“Hiya Harlan!”
Your crappy day suddenly brightened at the appearance of your favorite Thrombey.
“Something’s wrong isn’t it?”
Harlan rested his hands in yours offering a reassuring smile. You chose not to deny the correct accusation from the man, instead going to sit down with him and Marta, once again explaining the story.
“I just wish Ransom wasn’t mad at me.”
A dejected sigh fell from your lips as you looked down at your growing stomach.
“My dear, if you tell him what you just told me, I am positive he would understand.”
“But I feel terrible for not being able to handle those girls. I mean he was having such a great time with his friends-.”
Harlan abruptly stopped you from spiraling into a depressive cloud.
“No buts, (y/n). Ransom’s friends are a crazy crowd of people, well, then again you have dealt with the rest of our family. Besides, Ransom’s friends deserved to be shown a bit of what you are made of. They need to understand that it’s not about the money or title, but the character within the person.”
You chuckled at Harlan’s exquisite speech.
“Wow, so this is why you are a best selling author?”
“I guess so, just remember (y/n), stay humble and who you are. Don’t change for Ransom or his friends because in the end that boy really needed a girl like you.”
A beautiful smile graced your lips at his encouraging words. Harlan always gave advice with much equanimity.
You finished the sapid and delectable lasagna with Harlan and Marta, often stopping to talk about the baby, who was to make an entrance in a few months.
After dinner was finished, you helped Fran clean up the dishes which she greatly appreciated. It was surprising to anyone that someone with your kind and caring personality would end up with a bonehead like Ransom. If only they all knew, Ransom was rarely ever an ass to you, occasions like these didn’t occur frequently.
By time you were done cleaning, Harlan had retired for the night, but not before playing a round of Go with Marta, who happily obliged and Fran gave you some clean sheets and then headed home herself. You were all alone now, only hoping when you’d see Ransom again. The two of you were both stubborn knuckleheads, who never wanted to surrender to the other.
Step after step, the wooden staircase creaked loudly as you slowly climbed to the second floor. Hand on the knob, you leaned against the bedroom door, tiredly pushing it open. A glance at your cell phone told you it was only a little after nine o’clock. It was an emotionally tolling day and you only wanted to curl up with your fiance, oh who are you kidding, your husband. Unfortunately, the closest thing you had to him at the moment was his maroon sweater, casing your body. All of this made the silk bed sheets even more comfortable, entrapping your exhausted body and lulling you to sleep.
Shooting up from your slumber, you made sure your phone was not on silent, just in case Ransom called again. Content, a void of darkness littered your sight, and you were out like a light.
RING!
The loud ringing emitting from your phone startled you, making your head shoot up from the pillows.
Bentley Livingstone
The bright light from the screen awoke you fully. Squinting to look at the time, you scoffed.
10:14 pm
“What the hell, Bentley.” Your voice raspy from sleep, it was evident that he had woken you.
Sorry Momma Bear, but can you let us in?”
“Us? And if you are at the house, I’m not there, Benny boy.”
The last thing you wanted now was to be talking to him, you practically ripped apart his girlfriend, who he was actually committed too for once. You felt awful for ruining Ransom’s day with his friends, but quickly reminded yourself that those women were even worse to you. The men probably thought you were a total bitch, after their girlfriends had played the victims.
“Cut out the sarcasm, will ya? I’m not mad at you, and actually I’m here at Harlan’s.”
You felt so relieved that you could almost cry, damn hormones.
Bentley must’ve known something had happened which meant Dylan knew and hopefully Ransom too.
“Fine.”
You went to the bathroom to hurriedly tame your messy hair and brush your teeth, ridding the final taste of lasagna away.
Harlan was asleep and Marta had left by this time, so as you opened the front door, you made sure to make it as quiet as possible.
“Hi (y/n).” Bentley was the first to walk in, giving you a hug which shocked you before reciprocating the action. Dylan did the same and you were bemused at the men’s kindness.
“So… what’s up.” Nervously, you crossed your arms over your chest, resting them on your small, yet protruding bump, all while awaiting an answer.
“We’d like to apologize on behalf of Samantha and Mallory.” Dylan stepped forward, placing his hand comfortingly on your shoulder.
“I’m so sorry guys. I didn’t mean for all this to happen.”
“Hey don’t be sorry! I’m glad I found out Sam was in it for your hottie.”
“Yeah. I’ve dated plenty of women but not anyone that cold.”
“Thanks, guys.” You looked up to be greeted with their bright smiles. It was nice to be so trusted.
“Dude, those babes said they were free tonight.” Dylan held out his phone to text said woman, Bentley doing the same.
Without second thought, you quickly put your hand between the two men, still having a very animated conversation.
“As much as I’d love to hear you guys babble over some girls, do either of you know where Ransom is?”
“He’s right here.”
A very familiar voice sounded from behind you.
There he was. Your hormones were through the roof and you couldn’t stop the happy tears that fell.
You ran to your fiance, throwing your arms around his neck, while his one free hand wrapped around your waist. Ransom placed a sweet kiss on your neck, laying his head there for a while, relishing in your love. How could he be so deserving of someone with such patience?
Too caught up in the moment, you didn’t even notice Dylan and Bentley sneaking out the front door.
Ransom held out a bountiful bouquet of exquisite light pink roses. With his free hand, he took both of yours, placing a few kisses to your knuckles.
Turning your hands over, Ransom kissed your wrists and then handed you the bouquet. You couldn’t help but giggle at all his affection.
“Pink roses, for you and our baby girl. I owe you both an apology.” Like a scolded puppy, he held his head in shame.
“I owe you an apology too-”
Your fiance’s index finger came up to shush you.
“No you don’t, I do.”
Ransom took your left hand, your ringed fingers intertwined with his now bare ones and led you up to the bedroom.
You went to go flump on the bed, observing as Ransom shut the door, and wordlessly sat next to you.
“I’m sorry that I, of all people, upset you. I should have been there for you, but I wasn’t.”
He sat on the edge of the bed, full of remorse. Truth be told, you had never seen Ransom like this. Taking your left hand, you lifted his chin gently, the cold metal of the rings somewhat startling, making Ransom turn his solemn face to look at you.
“How did you know?” Gazing into his gorgeous and endless eyes, you saw his sorrow, a large pang to your heart.
“Well, both girls tried to make a move on me. Mallory called our little lemondrop,” Ransom took a deep breath, saying the next word like it was gonna summon the devil himself,  “a bastard.”
You were so desensitized at this point, you just accepted the vile words. There was no use in letting their locutions affect you, because if they did, you’d be letting them win.
“Yeah, they both kinda said that to my face too.”  In hopes of lifting the mood, you let out a dry chuckle to let Ransom know that you were somewhat okay. Especially, that he was here, next to you.
“You girls were laughing and everything, I truly thought you were having a good time. I am so sorry, Sweetheart.”
Ransom was so upset, he buried his face into your chest, while you slowly and soothingly rubbed his back. Instead of telling him about your other banters with the women, you just kept your mouth shut. The poor thing was already so unsettled, you didn’t want to make matters worse for him.
It seemed like an eternity that Ransom was in your loving hold. His sobs were quieted and he examined your look of content. First, he softly pecked the corner of your lips then placed his warm hands on the small bump of your baby.
“Hi little miss, I owe you an apology too. Today I was not a great father at all. You and your mom will always mean the world to me. I can’t wait to meet you, honey.”
Ransom ended his heartfelt confession with a slow kiss to the unborn baby, that even you could feel through the sweater, making your heart flutter. For many months, Ransom worried about being a terrible father. Well, if what he just said didn’t prove that he was gonna be a great father, then you don't know what would.
Your hands flew up to your fiance’s face, once again holding him close, so close that your noses bumped. Both of your eyes were closed in bliss, that was until Ransom quietly spoke up.
“The beamer’s fine right?”
Believe it or not, but sometimes Ransom could be a comedian around those he cared about. A few giggles left your mouth as you pulled away from the man who was also laughing himself.
“I-I’m...serious, babe!” It took a few tries for Ransom to get the sentence out without cackling. For years it had been a running joke that Mr. Drysdale loved his car more than himself which was quite the revelation, if you ever heard one.
Getting up from the bed, you leaned down to kiss between Ransom’s eyebrows that were knitted with concern.
“Yes, your other child is fine.”
“So now that the air is clear, are you hungry?”
Don’t judge, just because you may have eaten lasagna just a while ago, didn’t mean you’d pass the golden opportunity for more food. You eagerly nodded your head before sitting on Ransom’s knee. His arms were wrapped around you in a protective manner, while his hands held the phone with the menu on screen.
“Ran, what Chinese place is gonna be open this late?”
“Trust me, I know this place.”
Half an hour later, a man showed up on the doorstep holding a plastic bag hopefully filled with your late night smorgasbord. To your surprise, the bag was actually filled with all its content which needless to say didn’t last long. Between your endless stomach and Ransom’s growing hangover, the greasy meal trays were soon empty. You and Ransom had taken the food up to the bedroom, devouring it all, while laying on the bed enjoying the time together.
Even when things were rough, you and Ransom always found a way to get through.

word count: 6969
a/n: I FINALLY finished this! It turned out to be shorter than my expectation but i think it’s still okay. After 1000 words or so I just realized that Changbin’s “If” probably inspired me. like i said before, i’m pretty sure i broke like 10 rules of soulmate au so please forgive me.
Tumblr media
The sound of shutters is accompanied by the audience’s cheers. You take a glance at the television, watching the artist in spotlight bow deeply. You feel Jeongin’s eyes on you before averting your gaze back to the customer in front of you. “Here’s the change. Thank you for coming!” you exclaim, seeing Jeongin frantically looking for the TV remote from your peripheral vision.
“We’ve been waiting for this one since last year, and he’s finally back with a full album. Let’s welcome, Bang Chan!”
“First of all, Chan, congratulations on your wedding!” the MC chirps and Chan blushes. “We were all shocked when you told everyone you’re married last week. Mind to share how you met your soulmate?”
Jeongin is mouthing profanities now, opening the drawers as quiet as possible. You, meanwhile, are glued to the screen. “I’d rather not talk about this at a public event, so I’ll keep this brief. I met my soulmate during a party, and then the timer on my wrist stopped. That’s when I knew,” he shares.
“Go to hell,” Jeongin spites as he finally finds the remote and shuts the television off. “Don’t watch this shit.”
“It’s okay. It’s how things are supposed to be,” you respond flatly. Your best friend points at your fingers, which are balled into fists without you realizing. “I’m fine!” you convince him. “In fact, I’m glad I don’t have to see that goddamn timer ticking anymore. And going on dates in secret was such a pain in the ass.”
Throughout your 1-year relationship with Chan, you never felt at ease. Movies and novels always make having soulmates seem like something beautiful, but in fact, it’s a headache. Everyone in the whole world has different soulmate things. Some are color blind until they meet their soulmate, some has timers like Chan’s and some others have the first words their soulmates say to them inked on their arms. It can take someone years before they find their special one, and when they do, they’re willing to do anything to be with that person.
Technically, it wasn’t Chan fault that he left you for his soulmate, but everytime you recall the time he broke up with you, your blood boils.
All the beautiful memories, all the struggles you had overcome… everything meant nothing.
“Changbin’s coming in a minute,” Jeongin informs. “Have you thought about it yet?”
When you asked Jeongin to find you a quiet and responsible roommate, you didn’t mean Seo Changbin. It’s not that you two don’t get along, but Changbin has a tendency to be very snarky towards you and it’s kind of annoying (and intimidating, but you will never admit that). College and part-time job have made you tired enough, you don’t need to deal with a scowling Changbin and his sharp mouth when you get home. What surprises you more, however, is the fact that the boy approves of you.
“Don’t think too much,” Jeongin says as he wipes the counter table. “You want a quiet and responsible roommate, plus you don’t have to pay as much as you do now. Changbin fulfills both of your conditions, what else could you ask for?”
You put the last cheesecake inside the display counter, loving how fluffy and cheesy it looks. It also happens Changbin’s favorite menu, though he doesn’t strike you as someone who would love cheesecake. Great, out of all things, that’s what you remember about him? “What are Changbin’s conditions then?”
Someone enters the café, ending your conversation with Jeongin who quickly dashes back to his station, but not before whispering, “He just wants you.”
Tumblr media
“Jeongin-ah I’m hungry!”
There’s still an hour before closing time, but all the customers have left and now there’s only Changbin on the table near the window, brainstorming for his screenplay. You heave a sigh and takes out a plate from the drawer. You’re the barista for today, why does he pretend like you don’t exist?
You put the plate on the table and ring the bell, causing Changbin to look up from his notebook. “Oh, it’s you, Y/N.” He gets up from his seat, approaching the counter while opening his wallet. “What do you want to eat?”
Changbin examines the display counter, frowning as he browses through the available menus. You notice him panicking a bit as he scans the second row. “I’ll take—”
“It’s okay,” you mutter. “Take your time. I won’t rush you.”
He slowly nods, continuing to read the cakes’ labels one by one before settling on his favorite menu.
“Are you sure you want me as your roommate?” you ask, putting the last slice of cheesecake on the plate. Changbin looks almost flustered, and you feel a bit proud of yourself. He always seems to be very in control of every aspect of his life, so seeing him a bit taken aback because of you feels satisfying.
Changbin starts slicing his cake, not bothering to return to his table. “I mean, why not?” he says. “I know you already and if Jeongin decides that you’re not crazy, then I believe him.”
“You feel that you know… me?”
He shrugs, lifting his eyebrows at the younger boy as the latter comes out from the pantry. “You’re Jeongin’s best friend, an English major, and he said you’re never late for anything—especially rent.”
“You hate morning shifts!” Jeongin shouts.
“You ranked first in your batch, right?” Changbin continues.
“Y/N hates bananas.”
“You love pizza—wait what you hate bananas?”
“I don’t hate them but bananas are definitely my least favorite.”
“Whoa that’s amazing.”
Changbin goes on to list everything he knows about you with Jeongin’s help, sometimes correcting each other although you’re still with them. You get to see Seo Changbin giggling for the first time, and maybe you want to see it more often.
“When are you going to move in?” he asks after helping Jeongin clean the tables. He’s back to the cool, almost cold Changbin, but you tell yourself to take the risk.
“How about this weekend?”
“Awesome.”
Tumblr media
You plop yourself onto your bed, staring at the ceiling of your room that used to be Jeongin’s. It’s Saturday, but all you can think about is your reading assignment and other tasks. Changbin knocks on the slightly ajar door, carefully peeking inside.
“I ordered dinner,” he informs. “It’ll be here soon.”
It’s only been a few hours, but so far Changbin is much better than your old roommate. He helped you unpack quietly (he did make some hurtful comments about your dreamcatcher collection, but you could handle it), gave a space for your cactuses in the living room, and let you decide the menu for dinner.
The bell rings soon after, and now both of you are enjoying a pot of kimchi jjigae. “Are you sad that Jeongin’s not here anymore?” you attempt to start a conversation. Changbin snorts, glancing around the flat. “I’m glad he’s not here anymore,” he answers in a fake mocking tone. “He always wakes me up too early.”
You nod, remembering the painful memory that is your school retreat back in fifth grade. Jeongin was the dorm leader and he forced everyone to sleep early only to wake all of you an hour earlier. “I hope his soulmate will be able to live with that,” you laugh.
Changbin’s ears perk up at the word soulmate, clearing his throat as you look at him in confusion. “You’re still here,” you point out. “I figure you haven’t met your soulmate yet?”
He shakes his head nonchalantly, slurping his soup in one go. Love is probably too lame for Changbin, and while you’re never really obsessed in finding your true love yourself, his response makes you feel like someone pricks your heart with a needle. “Never really tried looking for them, to be honest. How about you?”
“You mean, do I want to find my soulmate?
Changbin places his bowl back to the table, his lips a bit red due to the spicy soup, and you almost want to laugh. “The idea of having a soulmate is beautiful, I suppose,” you answer. “But I’m fine with the way things are now, it’s not like I’m desperate or something. We’re still young anyways.”
“Do you believe in it? That there’s someone in this world who’s specially meant for you and only you?”
His question intrigue your interest; you’ve never met someone who’s doubting the concept of soulmates. But then again, this is Changbin. He’s the only person you know who has never asked about your soulmate bond. “Well, people do meet their soulmates, don’t they? I guess I’ve never had a chance to doubt it, because it’s there. People have soulmates, it happens.”
“There’s one thing that’s been bothering me for quite a while, though,” you add. Changbin sits up straighter at your statement, and suddenly you wonder if it’s a good idea to tell him. You never share this with anyone—not even Jeongin—because you don’t want to be such a killjoy. Besides, you know how their reaction will be: they’ll think you’re a pathetic pessimist who probably will never meet your soulmate.
“You can trust me.” His voice sounds light, but the weight in his words feel real. Changbin flashes you one of his rare smiles (you’re pretty sure you saw it on his birthday last year) and you gain a surge of confidence.
“Do couples simply love each other because they’re soulmates?” Your voice is almost a whisper, but Changbin raises his eyebrow, encouraging you to continue. “Having opinion is not a crime, Y/N. What are you so afraid for?” he deadpans, but his gaze remains warm and it kind of messes with your whole system.
“I mean, a lot of us date other people before meeting our soulmates,” you continue. “It’s like, you have feelings for one person, but all of those feelings vanish just like that when you meet your soulmates. How is that possible? Are you being with your soulmate because you love them? Or do you love them simply because they’re your soulmate?”
You’re met with silence as Changbin only stares at you in… awe? That’s probably not it but you swear to God his eyes twinkle, boring into yours and making you blush due to the intensity. You almost feel disappointed when he tears his eyes away from you before gathering the empty plates.
“Let me wash the dishes tonight. This is your housewarming gift,” he mumbles, heading to the sink. You watch his back in silence, slowly falling asleep to the sound of his humming and the water. As you’re about to close your eyes, he looks over his shoulder.
“What’s your soulmate thing?” he asks.
“Soulmate thing?”
“Shit, I forgot the term—the one sign that makes you realize that you’ve met your soulmate.”
You give him a sleepy smile, closing your eyes when he starts humming again. Gotta ask what that song is later.
“Once my soulmate tells me they love me, I’ll stop having nightmares.”
You want to ask Changbin what his soulmate bond is, but sleep has taken over you before you can voice it out.
Tumblr media
What Seo Changbin knows about the world is the fact that nothing is certain. Sure, the Sun rises in the East and the Earth is round, but what about the other things? The human beings? He’s seen so many people walked out of his life, he’s witnessed the most hurtful lies and changes.
Changbin has seen enough to know that trust is overrated. You can’t trust anyone, not even your loyal pet. What happened last night, though, was beyond his imagination. Him telling you that you could trust him?
He was so close to take back what he said, but seeing the tiny sparks of hope and confidence in your eyes made his heart do somersaults. God, if only you knew how much power you have over him…
“It’s barely 10AM and you’re already being productive.” Your voice greets him, snapping him out of his daydream. “What are you working on?” you ask, pouring fresh milk into your glass. Changbin collects all his papers as you sit beside him.
“Sorry for all the mess,” he apologizes. “Jeongin and I never used this table so I always work here.”
You shake your head, glancing at his laptop screen before suddenly pulling away, as if you just did something inappropriate. “No, it’s okay, you can see,” he quickly says, sliding his laptop to you. Changbin suddenly recalls all the moments he shoved Jeongin away because he hates it when people read his stuff before it’s finished.
You’ve been here for less than 2 days but he’s already breaking so many of his own rules.
“Yeah. My graduation project. My ride or die.”
Changbin is lost in his own world after that. You’re still sitting there, debating with yourself if you should stay. Roommate-Changbin may still intimidate you, but Director-Changbin only excites you. You want to know what’s on his mind, how he pours his questions and views about the world into his films.
You don’t notice that he’s stopped typing and is now watching you. “Y/N? You’re still here?”
“O-oh!” you yelp, instantly regretting the shock in your voice. “I’m just wondering…” you trail off.
“Yeah?” Changbin waits for you patiently, holding your gaze.
“Can I watch you work? I promise I’ll stay quiet.”
“I started writing this 3 years ago,” Changbin shares. “Somehow I could never writing the perfect ending, nothing felt right. I thought maybe I should use this as my graduation project.” He laughs, “So I could force myself to end the story.”
“What is it about?”
Changbin doesn’t answer you right away, staring at his laptop screen instead. He thinks long and hard—something he does often that infuriates Jeongin, but you’ve come to appreciate it. “Loneliness. Cliché, I know, and that’s why I’ve been struggling.”
He stops to take another sip of his coffee. “About whether it’s better to just be alone.”
“I don’t think it’s cliché,” you reply. “It’s something everyone has to deal with for the rest of their lives. It’s familiar. Important.”
“That’s exactly why I don’t know how to end it!”
“Then just say so.”
Changbin shakes his head before deleting a whole paragraph he previously typed. “That’s not how it’s supposed to be. People want answers.”
That shuts you up. You may be an English major, but this is Changbin’s field. And it’s his work, not yours. “Sorry. I crossed the line, didn’t I?”
“Nonono, you’re right,” he mutters. “Maybe I should try.”
“No, Changbin, this is just my opinion. You don’t need to—“
“And do you want to be the main character? I think you understand the material well, and this role suits you.”
Rejection is already on the tip of your tongue, but the way Changbin’s eyes twinkle is clouding your brain. He continues to stare at you as you’re debating with yourself, and when you meet his eyes, you melt. The cool, almost cold Seo Changbin is asking you for a favor, and while you’re not obligated to fulfill his wishes just because he’s suddenly nice to you… you want to.
He yells when you finally give him a firm nod, averting his eyes back to his laptop. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you with everything. I’ll finish this soon, okay?”
Once again you can only nod, admiring the small smile on his lips.
Tumblr media
“You agreed to what?!” Jeongin shouts, resulting in you smacking his lips with your hand. “Shut the hell up we’re in the library!” you hissed as you bow in apology to all the people sending you death glares.
“Just man up and admit that you’re so whipped for Seo Changbin!” Jeongin has closed his book and is now trying to close yours as well. “Come on, tell me the details! All the embarrassing cheesy details!” he pesters.
The librarian has cleared her throat thrice in the past 5 minutes and you’re sure that means you’re going to get kicked out soon. You sigh at Jeongin, who takes this as a sign that you want to leave. He gladly put all your things back into your bag, dragging you out of the library with a satisfied smirk playing on his lips.
You don’t know if you like Changbin. Maybe you do, but maybe you’re just missing the feeling of having someone. “I don’t know,” you mumble, sitting on the bench across the library. “Everytime I think about Chan I still want to cry, I still want to curse the hell out of him for ending things a day after he told me that he loved me.”
“Maybe things are going to be different this time,” Jeongin tells you. “Try to see him as Seo Changbin, not as the next Bang Chan.”
“Once you do, you’ll be able to see Changbin clearly.”
Tumblr media
Everything has started to feel lighter.
You never remember your nightmares anymore even though you’re well aware that you still get them. And you have someone to go home with after your classes or your shift at the café now that you live with Changbin. Jeongin never shuts up about it, constantly pointing out that Changbin likes you better than him because he’s always with you.
And tonight is no exception.
“Hyung, why are you still here?” he asks, pretending to be curious.
“I’m working, leave me alone,” the older boy says flatly, not even glancing up from his laptop.
“Oh Y/N you’re done?!”Jeongin exclaims.
Changbin quickly closes his laptop, searching for you before he realizes that his friend is messing around with him. Jeongin laughs hard, patting Changbin’s shoulder as he dashes to you. “Finish up quickly, your boyfriend is waiting for you!”
“You’re such a dumbass,” you retort, wiping the counter one last time. You glance at Changbin who’s now looking at you, his lips curling into a soft smile when your eyes meet. Sometimes you really think that he’s into you, and you can never get used to that.
“I’m done anyways,” you inform. Jeongin’s phone buzzes, his face lights up as the name of his soulmate rolls out of his lips. He gives both of you a quick wave and leaves as you lock the door. You chuckle at the sight of Jeongin running to the bus stop. “He’s so in love.”
“He smiles all the time now it’s scary,” Changbin adds.
“Well I guess that’s the magic of being with someone you love.” you mumble. “And being with someone who loves you.”
Changbin’s breath hitches at your statement, causing you to eye him. “What?” you ask.
“Nothing,” he answers. “Have you ever wondered where your soulmate is?”
No matter how much Changbin has changed around you, hearing him talk about soulmates is still one of the weirdest things ever. You two can talk about anything, except this. The whole soulmate talk always reminds you that he’s not yours, that whatever you have now will end when he finds his soulmate or when you find yours.
“Of course. Especially because of the nightmares,” you admit. “But then I realized that I was looking for my soulmate with the wrong purpose. I mean, you shouldn’t want to find your soulmate just because you want your problems solved, right?”
“Are you still talking to Bang Chan?”
Besides Jeongin and Changbin, no one else knows about you and Chan. When you just started dating, Jeongin asked so many things about him, but Changbin never said anything. Not even a congratulation.
“How do you know that we broke up?”
You wince as soon as that question rolls out of your mouth. “Fuck. Of course you do. He got married.”
“Sorry,” he sighs. “Forget it.”
“No, it’s fine,” you interject. “Why did you ask?”
“I saw him picking you up at campus once. It was already super late,” Changbin reveals. “He was dressed in all black—with mask, cap and all that… celebrities-in-disguise attire.” You chuckle at his choice of words, causing his cheeks to slowly turn pinkish.
“You could barely did anything freely, yet you looked happy Y/N,” he continues. There’s a long silence afterwards as because you can’t figure out whether he could possibly mean. With each day you spend together, you feel his wall crumbling. You love it so much that you’re afraid one small mistake will destroy everything.
Changbin takes a deep breath, biting his lip as you finally have enough courage to look into his eyes. “What can I do to make you smile like that?” His whisper is soft but determined. Genuine.
Right in this moment, something in your heart clicks. Seo Changbin has you under his spell, enticing you with his words, his action, his heart.
“Can you sleep with me tonight?” you blurt out.
“Excuse me?!”
“Not like that,” you laugh. “Just stay until I’m asleep. Maybe the nightmares will be less scary.”
They won’t, but you’re not planning to tell him that.
You just want to see him as you fall asleep.
Tumblr media
“Don’t you want to sit here?” you offer, patting the empty space beside you. Changbin smiles from his spot on the floor, right beside the bedside table. “I want you to sleep well Y/N. The two of us won’t fit in there,” he politely rejects although his brain is screaming at him to take the offer. There’s nothing he wants more than wrapping his arms around you and hugging you tight all night, whispering pretty words in your ear all night long so you will see rainbows in your dream, but maybe he still needs to wait.
Or he can just say that he loves you now.
“Good night, Changbin. Thank you for doing this.”
“Anything for you.”
“Don’t say things like that.”
“I’m not taking it back, though,” he singsongs. “Sweet dreams, Y/N.”
You grin, wrapping yourself with your blanket. “I’ll try.”
A few hours later, you wake up with a jolt, panting hard as the horror of the nightmare you just had leaving you. After downing a glass of water on the bedside table, you try to recall what you dreamed of. It’s strange, you think to yourself. Back then, one nightmare could haunt you for weeks, but now you forget everything as soon as you wake up.
“Y/N? Are you okay?”
Changbin rushes to you, cupping your cheeks to examine your face. “Ch-Changbin,” you mumble, eyes widening as you realize how comforting his touch is. It makes you feel like you’re floating, before landing on fluffy clouds. You feel lightheaded, and the way he looks at you doesn’t help at all.
“Did you have a nightmare?” he panics. Changbin circles his arms around your shoulders when you nod. You’ve never had a sweet dream, let alone dreaming of Changbin, but if this is a dream then you don’t want to wake up. Ever.
He envelops your entire body with his arms as he presses feathery kisses on your exposed shoulder. “I hate seeing you like this,” he says again. From the tone of his voice, you know that he’s frowning. “What’s going on, Changbin?”
Changbin pulls back, eyes holding your gaze like you’re the one he longs to see. “I love you,” he states.
You prompt yourself to wake up before this dream overtakes your reality, but everything stays the same and now Changbin intertwines your fingers with his.
“Are you sure?” you croak, gripping his fingers.
Changbin dips his head to press his lips onto yours, pulling you into his embrace as he pours all the love and adoration he has for you into the kiss. He kisses you slowly but firmly, nibbling your bottom lip when you curl your arms around his neck. Changbin chases your lips when you pull away, whining when you stop him from placing another searing kiss on your lips.
“I need to tell you something first,” you mutter, lips trembling. “Once I decide to love I don’t hold back, Changbin. I don’t hesitate, and honestly I don’t know if I’ll be ready to hit the brake when we reach the dead end because it’s you and—”
Changbin cradles your cheeks in his hands again, shaking his head as he peppers passionate kisses all over your face. “Please don’t hold back,” he says, almost begging. “Love me. Love me however you want to, okay? Because I don’t want to hold back either. You mean everything to me.”
You’ve got to be dreaming, you must be. Your feelings for Changbin are too strong that for once, you’re having a sweet dream. The sweetest dream. Universe is giving you a chance to live your wishes and in the midst of ghosts, murders, airplane crashes and death. Seo Changbin is here and says that you’ll be able to bask in the warmth of his skin and the fiery touch of his fingers whenever you want to.
But his grip on your waist feels too real and the loving gaze in his eyes feels too hard to resist. “You’re not dreaming,” he tells you, reading your mind and crushing your doubts.
“Can I stay here? Please? I want to hold you,” he asks, almost begging. You nod, your eyes feel heavy as Changbin kisses your cheek.
“What happened to Mr. Oh-Y/N-we-won’t-fit-in-there?” you tease, burying your face in the crook of his neck, his shy laugh being the last thing you hear before falling into deep slumber.
Tumblr media
It’s been 10 minutes since you woke up, and you don’t understand what’s happening. Changbin is still sleeping beside you, his arm curling around your waist loosely. Waking up next to him is something you’ll need to get used to, but there’s another thing that makes you wide awake at 6AM.
You stopped having nightmares.
Carefully, you remove Changbin’s arm from your waist before shaking his shoulder. “Changbin,” you call out, smile dancing on your lips as he blinks. “Hmmmm,” he hums. “Good morning, babe.”
You try to ignore your burning cheeks and pulls him up instead. “I didn’t have any nightmare,” you announce as he sits up, his hair sticking out in various directions. “Changbin, I’m serious,” you demand when he fails to respond. “What’s your soulmate bond? Is it just me or are we really… soulmates?”
There’s a tension in the air before Changbin starts sniffling. You quickly climb into his lap, taking him into your arms as he starts sobbing and mouthing words you can’t make out. “Hey, what’s wrong?” you question.
“My soulmate bond is I’ll only be able to cry after touching my soulmate,” he says, smiling softly when your hand comes into contact with his cheeks, wiping his tears. You start to tear up as well; everything must have been suffocating for him. He had to bottle up all his feelings inside, not having the privilege to let everything out while it’s easy for everybody else.
“I can call you a crybaby now, huh?” you joke, pressing kisses on the top of his head.
Changbin nips your collarbone in return, your heart soars when you feel him smile against your skin. “You can dream of me every night now, huh?”
You never have any nightmare again, but nothing beats waking up in Changbin’s embrace and knowing that you don’t have to say goodbye to him.
Tumblr media
Beaches are scary at night and the chilly weather only makes it worse. You watch Changbin walking around to thank his crew one by one, including Jeongin whom you dragged out of his flat at 2AM to become a replacement for Changbin’s boom operator that bowed out last minute. Your best friend waves you goodbye from afar, his red hair is the only thing you can see.
The beach is now empty, leaving only you and Changbin as the wind gets harsher. “You did well,” he praises, intertwining your hands together. “I only did this for you,” you answer. “After today I realized acting is not my thing.”
He bows at you. “I feel honored.”
You laugh; after everything that’s happened it’s still somehow satisfying to see him say sweet things to you. The cool, almost cold Changbin is long gone—now he’s your Binnie Binnie Changbinnie who whines when you leave bed too early or come home too late.
“Y/NNNNNN.” And here he goes again.
“What?”
“Why won’t you ever tie your shoelaces properly? I taught you the double knot before!”
You give him a playful “tsk,” sitting down on the soft sand to do the double knot exactly the way he showed you. Changbin watches you with amusement, guiding your fingers everytime you make a wrong loop. “Sometimes I wonder how we would find out we’re soulmates if I didn’t tell you my soulmate bond,” you murmur.
“I would’ve told you that I love you any other way. It doesn’t matter,” he responds. “I only wish I said it sooner.”
“Did you mean it?”
“That I love you? Of course, why would you think otherwise?”
You shrug. “I don’t know how this works. Do you just have to say it? Or do you have to really mean it?”
“Haven’t those before me told you that they loved you?”
“Those? There were only 2 before you,” you share. “And yes, they told me that. Nothing happened.”
Changbin closes the gap between you, gripping your waist a bit tighter than usual and pressing his lips on yours a bit harder. You bite your bottom lip after he releases you, causing him to frown. “I love you,” he says, tugging your lip with his thumb before replacing it with his lips once again. Both of you are gasping for air when he pulls away, but this time you smile at him.
“I mean it,” Changbin tells you firmly. “Don’t ever question that. Now let’s get you home, you’re freezing.”
Tumblr media
“Have you asked your uncle if we can stay in his place?”
You and Changbin are cuddled up in bed, planning your upcoming trip to Daegu to celebrate your birthday. “I forgot!” you gasp, noting it down on Changbin’s favorite notebook. You flip the page to write some other things, but the page isn’t empty. The whole page is full of Changbin’s notes—messy and confusing.
Aug 11 – I cried (around 10PM)
Aug 12 – Should I tell Y/N?
Oct 2 – Y/N moved in
Oct 30 – I’m not sure… a good listener, makes me laugh…
Nov 4 – asked about soulmates. asked about my movies à amazing answers.
Jan 10 – i love them….?
Feb 11 – tell Y/N you love them (what will happen…?)
“Changbin what the hell is this?”
Changbin looks up from his phone, resting his head on your shoulder to see what you’re reading. His face hardens the moment he realizes what you’ve discovered. He snatches the notebook away and rips that certain page, throwing it into the trashcan.
“Answer me, Changbin. What did I just read?”
“I swear to God it means nothing, okay?”
You really hate this conversation. It sounds like the typical romance movie where your lover insists that everything’s fine when it isn’t. You don’t want to end up questioning Changbin for the rest of your life, but you love him too much to let him go.
“You knew right from the start that I’m your soulmate.”
He reaches for your hand, and at times like this you hate how much he affects you. “You’re right. I knew.”
“And then you decided to test me,” you reply. “For what? So you could judge if I deserved your love? If I deserved you?”
“I didn’t test you!” he half-yells. You remove your hand from his and stands up. Your eyes meet your photos together he’s pinned to his wall, the most recent one is from yesterday. Changbin smiles in every single photo, arms wrapped around your shoulders or your waist. Seeing the little corner he dedicates for both of you always warms your heart, but now you’re not sure about anything anymore.
Changbin follows your gaze, smiling fondly at the memories before darting his eyes back to you. “I didn’t mean to test you. I just wanted to know if soulmates are real—if there’s really one person in this big, big world that’s meant for me.”
“But I just realized that to you, that was a test.”
“There’s a line between getting to know each other and testing each other, Changbin. The fact that you purposely hid this from me then asked me to be your roommate so you’d be able to ‘grade’ me… that shit hurts,” you admit.
You sigh when Changbin doesn’t respond, turning around to return to your own room. “What happens when someone separates from their soulmate?” you ask softly, turning the door knob.
“I won’t be happy ever again Y/N,” he rasps. “You know that.”
Changbin trails behind you as you’re walking back to your room. He grabs your hand when you’re about to close the door. “You can’t expect me to be okay, Changbin,” you state. “I want to be alone.”
“I know,” he answers. “But—”
“Good night.”
You sleep well without any problem now, but tonight is the worst night you’ve ever had in your entire life. There’s no nightmare, only reality.
Tumblr media
Changbin didn’t mean to lie.
He had a quite difficult past due to his inability to express his feelings well. His parents had tried everything: meditation, medication, therapy… you name it, but nothing cured him. He was longing for that one release and spent his whole life trying to channel his anger and frustration into something that didn’t scream scary to no avail.
Filmmaking helped him, but not enough. His parents bought him his own place when he was 15 because they were—in his brother’s words—“are tired of your shit”  and his brother stopped talking to him the moment he moved out. In the end, Changbin gave up. He shut everybody out, never tried giving anybody his time of the day because he knew how everything would turn out.
He decided to rent a new place after high school and got Jeongin as his roommate. Jeongin brought him to you, and then everything changed. Changbin didn’t care whether he would finally be able to cry or not—he just wanted to be with you.
Somehow, along the way, he screwed everything up. As usual.
He scrambles to get up when he hears the door opens, hoping it will be you.
“What the fuck happened?”
It’s Jeongin, but Changbin is still thankful.
“You know what Y/N has gone through yet you still did that?” Jeongin spites, dropping a box of pizza on the table. “And you lied to me!”
“Sorry.”
Jeongin sighs. “I thought you would treat Y/N better than any other man because you’ve been through the same thing, but you dared to test someone who constantly questions whether it’s possible for them to be loved without the soulmate label? I don’t get it.”
“I know it was a bad idea, but I wanted to be sure, Jeongin. I want—”
“Save it,” Jeongin cuts him off. “Y/N is the one who needs to hear this, not me.”
“Will you forgive me, though?”
Changbin is prepared for a “fuck you” and punch on his face, but Jeongin only walks to the door. “I’m Yang Jeongin. I’m not your parents, I’m not your brother. I’m your best friend,” he prompts.
“And Y/N is your soulmate.”
Tumblr media
There’s something different about today. Is it the way the sun shines on your shoes? The way people dress? The way the stray cats in front the café greet you? You’ve made a list of things that may have caused you to feel different, happier, but you can’t find it.
Whatever it is, your list certainly doesn’t include Seo Changbin standing in front of you, casually ordering Americano and cheesecake. You enter his orders in silence as he’s handing you his card. Jeongin is cleaning the display counter, unusually silent although you attempt to make a conversation with him. When he looks up, he gives you a look that screams, “I have nothing to do with this!”
Jeongin puts a cup of hot Americano on the table, smirking when Changbin protests that it’s way too hot. “I ordered a Hot Americano, not So Fucking Hot Americano,” he says sourly. The younger boy shrugs. “You should’ve told me you were coming.”
“Why? So you could—”
“Guys the line is getting long,” you cut them off. Changbin grabs his tray, looking at you with a stare that reminds you of the day he asked you to be in his graduation project. “Can we talk later? I’ll wait,” he asks.
Tumblr media
After your shift ends, you’re walking around your neighborhood with Changbin who insists to take you home. You’re able to converse like normal although you expected things to be incredibly awkward between the two of you, especially after that day when you moved out and he just helped you pack your things, no words spoken.
You didn’t say goodbye, but maybe you have a chance to now.
“So when’s the drama going to air?”
Changbin takes a deep breath, counting days with his fingers. “Around next week? I’m nervous as hell. I’ve never been involved in a production this big.”
“What’s the title of the drama again?”
“Arthdal Chronicles! I met Song Joongki, Jang Donggun and Kim Jiwon! How cool is that?” he boasts. Listening to Changbin talk about his projects never fails to bring smile to your lips. At times like this, he only cares about what he loves and sees just that. He doesn’t hesitate, he doesn’t think too much, he doesn’t control himself.
He glows.
“Hey Y/N.” Changbin grasps your wrist, gaze falling on your untied shoelaces. All the memories of him nagging at you to tie your shoelaces flood your mind and you have to do something, anything, before you fall apart.
You miss Changbin. You miss waking up to his sleeping face in the morning. You miss the way he looks at you when you praise him. You miss his beautiful voice lulling you to sleep. You miss taking him into your embrace whenever he cries, convincing him that he’s free to pour out his feelings now.
You love him—like soulmates do.
Crouching down, you connect the laces together, ready to do the first step. But Changbin stops you, completing the knot swiftly as you stare at him. When he looks up, his eyes are already glazed with tears. “I want you back,” he states.
His gaze becomes apologetic when he feels your body freeze, but he quickly wraps his hands around yours when you want to run away. “I let my doubts against the world overpower me. I spent so many years looking for answers to convince myself that not everything is bleak, yet I let the darkness consumed me,” Changbin says.
“You’re the warmest, brightest light I’ve ever encountered but I failed to see that. And I’m sorry.”
He pulls you up, wiping your tears you didn’t know you shed. Changbin takes a step closer, cupping your face softly. “Fuck soulmates, I don’t care about that. I’m goddamn lucky that you really are mine, but even if you weren’t, I would still choose you.”
“And I can’t believe there’s a day when I’m gonna be the one saying this, but we can take things slow. As slow as you want.” Changbin gives you a small smile when you finally look him in the eyes. He’s awaken all kinds of feelings inside you, even the ones you didn’t know exist, but there’s only thing you can identify now: yearn.
Changbin lets himself cry when you decide to circle your arms around his neck. “I know this is too much to ask,” he sobs. “But I just want you to know that I want to love you right. I didn’t have a chance to show you that yet, and it’s all my fault.”
You shake your head. “It’s my fault too. I only cared about my fears. I forgot about yours.”
Your soulmate sobs even harder at your answer, only calming down when you start running your hand through his hair. “You’re such a crybaby,” you murmur against his neck as he returns your hug, laughing at your favorite nickname for him.
Enveloped by Changbin’s warmth, you feel something you’ve never felt before. The feeling of being able to love someone without thinking about how things are supposed to be, without hesitation, without limits.
You realize how beautiful it feels to be able to love someone right.

EPILOGUE
“Happy birthday, stupid!” Jeongin yells at Changbin’s face, shoving as sloppily decorated birthday cake into the birthday boy’s hands. Changbin stares at it in mild disgust as you exit the counter, placing a black box wrapped with a white ribbon on the table. “I clearly told Jeongin to just buy you a cake. I’m not claiming that,” you explain. “But what’s done is done. Happy birthday, Changbin!”
You take a step forward to pat his back. A little awkward, but it’s enough to cause Changbin’s insides to flip. You remember his birthday and actually bought him something; he can just cry now.
Wait.
The unfamiliar sensation in his body is almost too overwhelming for him to handle, so he runs to the restroom, leaving you and Jeongin behind. He barely reaches the restroom’s handle when his legs give up. Soon, he’s crying silently, tears keep rolling down his cheeks no matter what he does to stop them.
Crying feels horrible, Changbin thinks, but it also feels wonderful. Liberating.
And he realizes that he’s already fallen in love with you even before he found out that you’re soulmates.
Changbin hates clichés, but he wouldn’t have things any other way. Now he just needs to figure out how to tell you.

DO YOU WANT APPLES, OR BEES!? @izukulove
anyways i decided to make this a kaminari x reader, ik u like izuku but i just thought this matched denki’s memeing ass so well fjsfh (also ik i dont generally do scenarios but o h w e l l)
Being friends with Denki was..surprisingly fun at the best of times and a downright challenge at the worst. To be honest, he was one of your best friends and no matter how many times his crappy jokes or horrible flirtation attempts annoyed you, he always had this way of drawing you back in with that electrifying smirk and lame one liners. Unfortunately for him, his lighthearted personality and the fact that he was very much a ‘class clown’ was his downfall when it came to you.
It was true that when he first met you, his initial greeting was ‘I may not be a photographer, but I could totally picture me and you together. Name’s Denki, and you are?’, which wasn’t all that serious as it was just part of who he was as a person to flirt with every attractive girl he saw and you were definitely in the ‘attractive’ category. The more he got to know you though, the less playful and more serious his flirting attempts became and before he knew it you were on his mind nearly twenty four seven. When he told his friends about it though, even they didn’t believe it as they just figured this was just another ‘crush’ he’d forget about in two days when he passed a cute girl on the street or something, but this time, for once, he really was serious.
He could hardly explain the way you made his heart race every time you’d laugh wholeheartedly at one of his jokes and he practically lived for the afternoons where the two of you would lay around and watch movies or play games together. Maybe his friends were right that he usually didn’t stay interested in one person for very long, but this was different, and he knew it was different because when the other girls he liked seemed to show interest in others, he just sort of shrugged it off and moved onto the next one, but when you mentioned to him that you had a date coming up he was inexplicably jealous.
“Well why the hell are you going on a date with him if you don’t even like him!?” He shouted after nearly spitting out his drink only for you to shush him since the two of you were currently eating in the cafeteria together.
“Jeez, don’t be so loud! And I don’t..not like him, I just don’t like like him!”
“Well what’s the difference!?” He whisper yelled back, trying his best to heed your warning but this was honestly just blowing his mind. One moment you’re talking about how you recently started talking to an acquaintance, not even a friend, might he add, and the asshole had the audacity to ask you out on a dinner date and you said yes even though you weren’t even into the guy in more than a platonic way!
“Well I’m just trying it out! Who knows, maybe i’ll hang out with him and we’ll click or something, I don’t know!” You huffed, getting increasingly frustrated with both yourself and your idiot of a friend.
See, you had thought that recently, once you realized how you felt about him, you had made your interest in him very obvious. You were practically begging him to finally legitimately ask you out rather than jokingly flirt with you like you were sure he did with every girl in sight, but every extra brush of your arm against his own or flirtatious comment of your own seemed to go unnoticed. You were starting to think that maybe he just really wasn’t into you and that your friends who had been reassuring you all along were wrong, so when you were asked out by an old ‘friend’ a few days after you began talking again, you figured why not? You could use the distraction anyways and maybe this guy really could be a rebound for your slightly broken heart.
Kaminari groaned for extra measure, but decided to shut his mouth about the topic as he sullenly played around with the food leftover on his plate. Part of him was screaming to just tell you about just how much he liked you, but the part of him that convinced him that he probably didn’t have a chance anyways kept him quiet. The two of you chatted for a bit more, but for the rest of the day it was clear that he was a bit down while you were preoccupied with your own thoughts.
By the end of the week you were so ready for a few days off considering how rigorous your school work and training had become and you were actually sort of excited for your ‘date’ and even went as far as to doll yourself up and dress like you weren’t exhausted for once. It was a bit awkward seeing your date for the first time since middle school once you met up at the train station, but after talking for a few minutes it wasn’t all that bad. You were also pretty happy to wind up at his restaurant of choice which happened to be an Applebee’s because you weren’t really looking to blow every cent you had on a meal and something casual  made you feel less pressured to appear too impressive. That, and you knew that recently Kaminari had picked up a part time job here so you figured if anything, if he was even working, you could get him to make some excuse for you if you felt like ditching.
By the time you had been seated, your date had excused himself to the restroom which left you fiddling with your phone before hearing that familiarly and annoyingly charming voice ring out from beside me.
“You really couldn’t spend a day away from me, huh [Name]?”
You rolled your eyes before even looking at Kaminari, thinking it was some sort of stupid coincidence that he not only happened to be working, but he appeared to be your server as well.
“How else am I supposed to make fun of you for that stupid outfit?” You teased, gesturing to the horrible ‘Applebee’s’ hat he was adorning.
“Well I’m not the one on a date at an Applebee’s.” He chided back, figuring he might as well put in his two cents about his everlasting distaste for this whole situation anyways.
While you waited for your date to get back, however, the two of you chatted about whatever came to mind and unsurprisingly, your date wasn’t too happy to come back only to find a server with one palm on the table leaning a bit too close to you for his comfort. You didn’t even notice him coming, so when Kaminari randomly stopped mid sentence only to say the most ridiculous shit you had ever heard, obviously in an attempt to weird out your date without you even noticing, you were honestly shocked.
“-It’s kinda dumb they don’t call boxing “fisting”, isn’t it? Anyways welcome to Applebee’s, can I get you guys something to drink?”
The second he said that you absolutely lost your shit, nearly choking on your own spit while doubling over in laughter, however your date didn’t find it nearly that funny. He simply scoffed at Kaminari, before sitting down with brows furrowed. When you noticed he obviously wasn’t happy, you tried to stop laughing by pursing your lips, but you couldn’t help the innocent little snorts that came out as you tried to order a soda since Kaminari was just giving you a ridiculous grin because he fuck did it feel good to make you laugh so hard and completely ignore your date’s new found dislike for him. The moment he left after also taking your date’s drink order, your date immediately started talking about how ‘gross that dude was’, and when your smile faltered and you began defending him, saying that he was a close friend of yours and that you thought his jokes were funny, he just shrugged you off.
The rest of the evening was painfully awkward as your date became rather childish and pouty the more Kaminari came over and made jokes or little comments that would send you into fits of giggles. By the time your meal was over, your date was kind enough to pay for your meals, but still made the excuse of saying he got a text about an emergency and couldn’t walk with you to the station, even though he hadn’t picked up his phone at all throughout your date, before dashing. You didn’t mind all that much though, so you just waved him off and when Kaminari came back around with a satisfied smirk on his face you gave him the best ‘disappointed mother’ look you could muster, though it was hard to keep yourself from smiling for long.
“You did that on purpose.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about!” He gasped out, acting astonished but smiling as you just shook your head and laughed upon realizing just how ridiculous this whole situation was. You were getting tired of dancing around him like this, acting like you hadn’t fallen for him and using lame dates you didn’t even want to participate in as a distraction, so with a final sigh you decided to just get it over with and rip off the bandaid.
“You know if you dislike my dates so much then maybe you should just try to improve them yourself.”
Kaminari laughed, but when he saw the questioning look on your face, his face fell flat as he realized you were being serious before choking out a shocked. “S-Seriously!?”
You shrugged in response, your cheeks beginning to burn a bit in embarrassment as you couldn’t really tell if that was a good ‘seriously’ or a bad ‘seriously’, but even though you could have easily made it out to be a joke, you decided to continue on anyways.
“Yeah seriously, I mean, If you want to.”
“Are you kidding!?” He exclaimed, his face lighting up again like an excited puppy. “I-I’d love to! That would be totally wicked!!”
His smile was infectious as a relieved smile of your own spread across your face, but before you could continue your conversation his name was called out by an angry looking manager who was pointing at a table of people that must have been Kaminari’s duty to serve.
“Jeez, that old fart can’t even give me two seconds! This is so lame to say, but I’ll text you! About the..the date thing.” He nodded excitedly about a hundred times while giving you a thumbs up before turning around and hurriedly walking over to the waiting table of people with a pep in his step.
You probably could have stayed there forever, watching him give that adorably sheepish smile while he apologized, but you gathered your things and began your walk back to the station, no longer bothering to hide the smile on your face and the enthusiastic racing of your heartbeat knowing that in the end, your date had gone even better than you could have ever imagined.
