Californiwhyning
Easter always brings with it the best things in life... wine, lamb and chocolate. This Easter I was fortunate enough to head to Baja California in Mexico, a place called Los Cabos (made up of 4 different capes 2 of which I managed to visit). My visit to Los Cabos followed a crazy week in Mexico City, where I finally managed to add Mexican wine to my list of wine country conquests. A little red Cab Sav which is apparently widely available, but well personal experience showed to not be quite so widely available. For a country that makes wine, it is surprisingly difficult to locate ANY let alone a good Mexican wine. Of course this was also the case in Baja California but that did not stop a wine freak like me from enjoying wine, even if it has to come in the form of an import from Chile named something like Altaveres - but after 3 extra large glasses, who really cares, it went doen the hatch and was properly enjoyed. Most importantly, this little red went very well with all my tacos! As I've said before - wine goes with everything - even that delicious national Mexican dish. So having seen more cactuses than I care to count I had to try tequila so and tried different types of tequila (some of which was definitely made "ta kill ya") So when the tequlia trolley rolled up and I got to try an artesan aka β€œhomemade” mezcal. I decided that this is my thing. Home made tequila is definitely the way to go. Now I just need to work out how to grow my blue agave bush... wait 10yrs, learn to cook the agave bulb and ... oh yes, buy a distillery .... get a French/American oak barrel to store my juice for 5 yrs and a cellar .... gosh ... suddenly that aged Don Julio isn't looking so expensive after all. So back to Easter, wine, lamb and chocolate. As Easter 2017 draws to a close and reality bites, it's fair to summarise this Easter as a fun, sun filled wine, taco and tequila adventure in the hot Californian desert.
