“Los Zafiros, (The Sapphires in English) were a mid-60s Cuban five-piece, a doo-wop singing quartet with Manuel Galban accompanying them on guitar. Ignacio Elejaide’s tenor voice is quite extraordinary – high and pure – far higher than anything you’d hear from their inspirations The Platters, The Drifters or The Ink Spots. . I’m not a connoisseur of doo wop, but I do own some Ink Spots on vinyl, and the music of Los Zafiros is much more varied, nuanced and, at times, even funky, than the original doo wop purists. However, one has to remember that The Ink Spots’ heyday was the late 30s/early 40s, and Los Zafiros are reinventing it Cuban style, 25 years later. It’s like the indie grunge bands of the 90s reinventing their own versions of late 70s punk or late 60s garage bands...” .
