When I first met Matt in February 2001, it was at such a unique time in both of our lives.  Each of us were killing time in CO (in the awesomest way possible) before we started our “real jobs” in Chicago in September.  He already had a great job lined up (thank you awesome economy!) and I was going to figure something out once I moved (how very Mish - because hey, things always fall into place).

Matt’s parents were living here back then, as they still are today.  I was blessed enough to get to know them at the same time as I was getting to know Matt.  Having gone to college in CO in the sixties, they know the area like the back of their hand.  Me, not so much - I could barely tell you which state CO was on the map (embarrassing, but true).  One of the first fun outings I remember us all going on was taking a drive up to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.  Matt and I have been back more than a few times since, but it has been years, and also our last visits were in the winter for snowshoeing.

I was excited to get back to the area and take a hike in the summertime, when the wildflowers are blooming and the streams are flowing in full force.  Ella decided she just wasn’t feeling it that day, so she spent the entire hike bounced between the backs of both Matt and I.  Six miles of pure adrenaline, excitement, beauty, exhaustion, and utter happiness at having conquered another trail with our little family.  

We hiked up to Lake Isabelle, and took the loop around Long Lake.  Both lakes were gorgeous with just amazing views of the mountains, a few of which still had some patches of wayward snow.  The area is quite popular, and the parking lot quite small, so we had to hike another mile down to the far away parking lot that housed our car.  We were tired, but happy.

When I came to the literal fork in the road so many years ago, choosing to move to CO on a whim changed the course of my life forever.  I’m grateful to Matt and his parents for showing me around this awesome state, and for helping me to fall in love with the mountains.  May they keep us in their good graces forever.
