Propaganda
Marie Laforêt (Purple Noon)—no propaganda submitted
Kim Novak (Vertigo, Bell, Book, and Candle)— She fought as much as she could to be able to preserve her own identity within the crushing hollywood system. She refused to change her czech last name and fought for a higher salary once she discovered her male counterparts were getting payed significantly more, which was an incredibly risky thing to do. She went through so much hollywood bs like she was forced to drop her affair with Sammy Davis jr. She played her iconic role in Vertigo thinking about her own oppressive and significant changes she had to undergo in order to fit in the tight hollywood mold which i think is partly why the movie is so beautiful and timeless. She is a gorgeous soul and a great artist.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Pruning Shears (The Amazing Devil)
My entire life it's running away too fast/Watching everyone I've ever loved walk past/Never really quite getting the knack of/Knowing no one will not/Ever come back for you
"It's basically a microcosm of life in one song. There's love and aging and grief and missed opportunities and happiness voices overlapping then separating."
Viens Viens (Marie Laforêt)
Come, come, this is a prayer/Come, come, not for me father/Come, come, come back for my mother/Come, come, she dies from missing you/Come, come, so that everything can start over/Come, come, without you living/Come, come, is nothing but a long silence
"Look I know this isn't in English so this probably won't even make it to the bracket, but! Basically it's a child begging for her father to come back after he left his whole family for another woman, with the anaphora of "viens, viens" to drive home her point, her begging. In french, the verb Venir means to come from a distant point to here (to me, to where I am, home). So the lyrics themselves already fuck me up, but what absolutely gets me is the way she sings it. The voice that starts off solemn, only to devolve more and more into sobbing as she repeats her prayer, the strength of her tone, the wretchedness of it all. The back up singer keeping perfect pace while she becomes more and more off tracks in her griefs. Fucking spectacular."
