Would you say that the dragons are in tune with their riders emotions? And/or that their behaviour can be interpreted as symbolism for their rider's emotional state? I've always headcanoned that and it's spawned a very rare ship (purely based on one descriptive interaction/moment between dragons, riders I don't think even interacted??? lol). But seeing that ask mentioning Syrax laying (potentially) Vhagar's eggs and how that can be taken to mean there was more to Laena/Rhaenyra's relationship is making me think about it again! I suppose, since it's fiction, we can read a lot into things and at the end of it, it's up to us what we make of it.
Love your blog, btw! :)
thank you for your ask!! and your sweet words :)
oh for sure they’re in tune with each other! we’ve even seen it on screen, when daemon got shot with an arrow on caraxes while fighting the crabfeeder’s men. caraxes screamed out like he was in pain, and immediately flew out of there. not to mention how dragons allow their riders, and those that their riders introduce to them, to be physically affectionate with them (such as with petting).
for example, here’s daemon petting caraxes, rhaenyra petting syrax, and even dany with her dragons hopping and happy to see her!

they’re not quite like pets, but rather more deeply connected like starks and their direwolves. i think a good way to compare it is with sansa and lady, because while sansa never got the chance to develop her warging abilities, she and lady still had a very deep bond, something much more than owner/animal.
i think it’s such a fun and fascinating idea to thusly consider the rider’s emotions as entwined with their dragon’s, but with a more primal edge on the dragon’s part, essentially being able to act out more when perhaps the rider has to reign it in and adhere to societal standards. to take this a little further, i think that with valryians being as entitled as they can be sometimes, it somewhat stems from the primality they’re exposed to with their dragon bond. they truly forgot that they’re humans sometimes.
