Why I like Lt. Carstairs
Tumblr media
Lt. Carstairs is just about the first person our heroes meet in the tragic epic that is “the War Games.” He’s also probably the nicest. Half Ian Chesterton and half Sgt. Benton, Carstairs is dashing, heroic, and more than a little handsome, the perfect picture of a young British officer.
Carstairs is a new arrival to the 1917 zone. He enters our story by liberating the ambulance that had picked up our heroes a few minutes earlier, only to be immediately captured by German soldiers. The ambulance in question belongs to one Lady Jennifer, who has also only just arrived. Carstairs thus ends up with the advantage of getting to know the Doctor and crew, plus Lady Jennifer, long before encountering either the person running the zone or the soldiers who have been here for months and bought into the simulation. He enters the episode with an open mind, and puts it to good use. When General Smythe convicts the Doctor and his companions of espionage and uses brainwashing to make it stick, Carstairs realizes almost immediately that something is very wrong about the situation. His loyalty and duty as an officer complement his intelligence and common sense, rather than overwriting them.
Carstairs also spends some time getting to know Lady Jennifer. I ship these two so hard it’s not even funny. But more significantly than their budding romance, they end up comparing notes on their wartime experiences, and in so doing they discover something very curious. Neither one of them can remember how long they’ve been here (nor can anyone else they’ve encountered), but they both recall “a sort of mist” - after which they were in an entirely different place. This conversation is the first major step towards figuring out what is actually going on in this episode, and it’s just Lt. Carstairs and Lady Jennifer being generally intelligent and observant. And as they start to put two and two together, they decide to throw in with our heroes.
As the plot gets bigger and bigger, and ever more complicated, Carstairs manages to maintain a fairly prominent role (though Lady Jennifer does not). He has the bad fortune to get captured by the badguys and rebrainwashed. Since he managed to entirely shake off the first round of brainwashing (because he’s awesome). Even completely reprogrammed, Carstairs retains some of his memories and constantly tries to make sense of his surroundings - recognizing the Doctor and Zoe as out of place. Poor Carstairs ends up rather the plaything of the brain programming machine, but he ultimately comes out of it alright. He is the very last of the kidnapped soldiers to be sent home, staying until the very end.
Lt. Carstairs is just a generally great guy. He’s honest and upstanding, loyal and intelligent, charming and witty. He’s an excellent precursor to the UNIT chaps, and an invaluable ally in this episode. Let’s hope he lived happily ever after.
