F is for France 🇫🇷🐓. . . . But what to share of our nearest and dearest neighbour? 🤔 . . . Ok, what’s the best car ever made? Obviously, it’s the Citroen DS - duh! I have always been a massive fan of this iconic and beautiful car. Unfortunately, I’ve never owned one though. The closest I came was a Citroen H Van, the square ones with the corrugated sides that are fashionable as street food trucks and outside Jamie’s Italian restaurants (RIP). When I got it in 2000 I became a member of the Citroen Car Club 🧥 for support and spare parts. Through that network I discovered the story of Xavier Moines, a garage owner in the south of France who had a yard full of DS’s and intended to renovate them. This I had to see. I got there in 2006 while on a road trip through France and Spain. However, what greeted me was not quite what I had expected; rows upon rows of wrecked cars, some on top of others, most covered in brambles and wild vines, all deteriorating rapidly. Heart breaking stuff 💔. I discovered from Xavier that the nearby river had burst its banks a couple of years earlier and the yard was badly flooded. His dreams of getting this classic back on French autoroutes shattered. He kindly let me take a wander through his graveyard of steel and even agreed to pose for a portrait, but I decided not to stop long; I felt I was intruding on his private grief. C’est la vie, as we say in England.
