You learn something new everyday- The shuttles in the lace looms that carry the polyester yarn are different thicknesses, depending on the loom. The 14pt quality (14 vertical threads per inch) shuttle is much thinner than the 8pt quality (8 vertical threads per inch) shuttle. You can see here the difference in thicknesses. There are roughly 5050 shuttles in the 14point loom and 3456 in the 8point loom. Some of our weavers and technicians changing the yarn bobbins on the top spool board of one of our vintage looms, all 7680 of them! Luckily though they don鈥檛 always need changed at one time. Every morning and afternoon the spools are checked and changed where needed, the lace pattern and stitch density dictates how much yarn is used. Over the past few months, MYB Textiles have been working on a unique loom refurbishment project with Scottish engineering company JetCut. MYB needed to create replacement combs for the refurbishment of a 100 year old, 9 metre wide lace loom currently out of production at our mill in Newmilns, Ayrshire.
JetCut are known for their innovation and precision using a fine abrasive water jet:
The beauty of abrasive waterjet: perfect curves, complex joints, seamless combinations of materials. Waterjet cutting helps unlock the design potential of many materials.
The team from JetCut visited the mill and worked with our inhouse engineers to understand exactly what was required: they were asked to produce 4500 individual parts cut from 1.5mm rolled brass with a tolerance of just 0.1%! Not an easy task! The reason for such a small tolerance is that the combs determine the gauge of the lace being woven and so the space between them allows for the number of threads per inch, up to our most intricate lace at 14 vertical threads per inch.
Jetcut chose to have stock brass rolled to the required thickness as a bespoke production run and carried out periodic quality inspections of the critical dimensions in order to have all the pieces within tolerance levels. An intensive process that created fantastic end results.
Above shows the individual parts, both original and new received from JetCut. These were then welded to create the final combs by our inhouse engineering team - their detailed knowledge of the loom and its workings is crucial to such a project. The combs are now installed and the loom almost ready to begin production after years out of service.聽
An amazing process to watch from start to finish! We will show more when the full project is complete and the loom is weaving.
