Introduction to Iranian/Persian aesthetics part 1

Before we begin (feel free to skip this):

I used the terms Iranian and Persian to refer to the same thing (of greater Iran). Back in the day, the natives referred to the land with various names which later became Iran, while foreigners (mostly greeks) referred to them by the name of the ruling tribe of the achaemenid dynasty (Persian).

Just to clarify, this isn’t political, it’s just about aesthetics. I’m using greater Iran instead of individual countries or ethnicities due to cultural overlap and an abundance of shared culture and heritage. It’s very difficult to separate many of these aesthetics and associate them with only one country or ethnicity (or smaller region) and it would be quite unethical to do so; As such, I’ve put them all together. I also didn’t use the term Iranic because there are other non-Iranic ethnicities in the region who also share much culture and history with us so once again, it would be unethical to exclude them.

I’m not familiar with the modern aesthetics of various other countries though so I won’t include them.

Intro:

some of the aesthetics that are mentioned here will be purely aesthetics, not subcultures while others are more than just aesthetics but I wont be mentioning their other features. Some of these don’t have an official name so I’ll be putting a name to them to make referencing them easier.

This post will only focused on some of our historical aesthetics, modern and other historical ones will be explored in other posts.

Mirror/Pari 

This is purely an aesthetic and nothing else (most often found in films, dance videos, ... but also interior decoration and other forms of art). This aesthetic doesn’t have a name or if it does I’m not aware of it. I called it mirror aesthetic because it is greatly associated with the mirror art in our architecture. It has somewhat of an ethereal feeling to it so that’s why I thought pari also fits well.

Colour pallet: silver, white, shiny/sparkly pastels, turquoise, deep blue, light blue, purple, light pearl tones.

Fabrics and embellishments: light and flowy fabrics, satin, bead work, mirror embroidery, pearls and gems.

Gems: Opal (specifically white and blue), pearls, diamonds, turquoise, moon stone.

Other items and places: mirror halls, next to flowy curtains, white flowers, those old silver oil lamps with turquoise decorations, sometimes persian mina art.

19th Century Noble Lady

The aesthetics of this time period were naturally quite diverse as many different sub-cultures had aesthetics of their own and there were also differences based on occupation, socioeconomic status, ... however there were also some general similarities.

This particular aesthetic is associated with the affluent ladies who lived during the 19th century. This general style came about before the Ghajar dynasty and continued to develop during the Ghajar era but I’ve focused on it’s form during the end of the 19th century. The general style is what most city dwelling women in Iran wore at the time, however, it has some more expensive elements that was linked to the wealthy.

Colour pallet: various colours but usually decorated with a bit of gold and silver.

Fabrics and embellishments: termeh, silk, satin, velvet, sermeh-doozi, bead work, zar-doozi.

Clothing and appearance: square headscarves worn in a specific way, traditional clothing of the time, lots and lots of jewelry, typically unibrow and beauty marks, flowers in scarf.

Other aesthetic features: wooden furniture, stained glasses, carpets, horses and carriages, tea sets, ...

Laat/Looti

This style is associated with the laat subculture. These were a gang-like groups that mostly existed in old and crowded neighborhoods in big cities and their purpose was usually to uphold traditional ethics, keep local cultures alive and stop chivalry and the likes from dying. They apparently go back to the 10th century and naturally their style and aesthetics (as well as their name, mannerisms, what they stood for, ... ) changed as time went on but this particular style is from their last days during the late Ghajar to Pahlavi eras (these aren’t the original Pahlavis who were Parthian warriors and who we get the name pahlavan (heroic warrior) from, the guy who established this dynasty, which was the last dynasty of Iran, didn’t have a clan or surname so he just copied the name of an ancient prestigious clan). 

When the central government was weak, these groups played a big role in establishing local safety and protecting weaker groups as well as standing up to dictators. They had a very strict code of conduct and principles that they abided by and they were often made up of lower working-class men who trained in ancient warrior methods and ethics (what we call ayin-e-pahlavani). They often had roles in overthrowing local governments, riots and rebellions. They often put a lot of emphasis on protecting the weak or disadvantaged and on friendship and brotherhood. Loyalty was extremely important to them and they treated each-other like family.

During the time that this aesthetic came about they really weren’t what they used to be. These concepts were still ingrained in the subculture but it was a far cry from its origin as they were overwhelmingly responsible for many of the crimes committed by the working-classes (and I’m not talking about crimes for helping people or overthrowing corruption), they were perpetually drunk and they often engaged in gang wars, they were mostly illiterate so they were very behind the times in many ways (remember the ethics they were upholding and see how that illiteracy factors into things) and basically they lost quite a bit of respect and the term came to take on a derogatory connotation.

I won’t get much into their history and nuances. Their style in these eras was influenced by European fashion (influenced may not be the right word here) as well as bazari styles with some garmabeh (traditional persian public baths) elements because during those times, they were one of the main groups of people who used garmabehs. They dressed quite differently before the Pahlavi era, however, many of their embellishments that set them apart have their roots in the late Ghajar era (western clothing was violently enforced and traditional clothing was legally banned in the 30s, the ghajar era ended in 1925). The original baba karam dance/skit that was done in urban weddings was also an expression of laati culture (the one that was done by men).

Element of this aesthetic include:

Stuff: kanjar and ghameh knives, tasbih (rosary), a piece of lowng (fabric used in public baths), sometimes ghelyoon.

Accessories: those big and fancy traditional rings, black hats, giant mustaches.

Clothes: oversized black suit with a white or black shirt or a big, black and rigid robe.

Other: old brick buildings, sometimes old ghahve khoones (traditional coffee houses), baazar corners and sometimes zurkhunes.  

Weaver 

This is an aesthetic that focuses on traditional rural professions that are related to hand-coloured yarn, things like carpet weaving and cloth weaving that are done in small rural villages. This includes:

Places: where yarn/cloth is made and coloured, in a rural cottage, right outside a rural cottage, in a traditional weaving workshop.

Stuff: colourful yarn, various traditional weaving equipment, carpet patterns.

Clothes: normal village women clothes (their work clothes) like the long floral skirts (usually with trousers worn underneath), the floral square headscarves, the long tunics on top of skirts, floral chadors, various forms of traditional embroidery, giveh shoes (the traditional ones not the modernized ones), ...

Astronomy/Astrology

This is the last aesthetic I’ll be mentioning today. This one isn’t only an Iranian aesthetic, it really belongs to the medieval muslim world but greater Iran was also an important part of that and this aesthetic pops up a lot here so I still included it.

Astronomy and astrology were often interlinked and people who practiced one often also practiced the other. This is an aesthetic that is centered around the astronomers of the medieval muslim world. It includes some general things from that time period such as islamic architecture and Moroccan lamps but if we were to get more specific, this aesthetics includes:

Things and places: Astronomical devices, observatories, the night sky, the astrological wheel, some elements of mysticism, geometry, mathematics, ...

The main colour pallet: gold and dark blue

Other related colours: red, orange, green, silver, light blue, purple, yellow

Clothing: turbans and clothing that astronomers (and other people) at that time wore.

After a 2 hour video essay, I will say this: my TharaFrong AU is inspired by cmbyn. I can enjoy a product of media and be critical of it at the same time, and to just not say what it's inspired by, while the whole idea and aesthetic was inspired by the movie, fells iffy to me. Anyway. I will finish it this summer, if that2the laat thing I do.

Isn’t there an episode of the Clone Wars where a commander rewards a trooper who just did really well by telling him he’s part of their team now? Cute trope, but....

How does he have the unilateral authority to just do that? What about the team that trooper was originally part of? What are they gonna do now? 

For all the commander knows, the trooper’s unit was already undermanned and he just made their problem (and a different commander’s problem) even worse by poaching this guy.

So their Jedi just asked them to do something that can only be accomplished with the absolute minimal amount of sleep necessary to maintain life, the platoon sergeant was tragically eaten on the last planet, another guy’s in the med bay for the foreseeable future because he thought the “DO NOT STAND IN THIS AREA” sign was just for aesthetics, and one squad never even made it off the last planet to begin with as the last LAAT that was supposed to extract them 20 minutes ago wasn’t coming at all because spontaneous parts failure meant it hadn’t even left the hangar and wouldn’t get the chance to because the fleet had to fuck off and retreat immediately. And now some commander who doesn’t answer to you at all (because SpecOps is SpecOps apparently) just scooped up the only surviving guy who was flash-trained to operate a certain piece of equipment you can’t just not use, and whose signature you need for various mundane administrative tasks that are about to get a lot more obnoxious once you have to spend time explaining why this trooper suddenly fucked off to [LOCATION REDACTED] with [UNIT REDACTED] with zero warning and cannot be contacted by regular channels for the next 16 cycles. Bonus points for him leaving right before deployment to Felucia like his timing was intentional.

Some useful Star Wars ship references: - I’ve been watching a bunch of Battlefront II videos using the new capital ships settings and I wish I could do better gifs or a video montage of these things because I think they’re really incredible as a way to show the sheer HECKING SIZE of those ships for those who don’t play the game.  I never really got a sense of scale, even when working on this Star Wars ships post, because the length and stats really are just numbers, even the idea that it’s probably about 7,000 crew on it (which means it’s a really big ship), don’t convey the size. But watching the clones run across this G I N O R M O U S hangar bay or walking past probably a dozen LAATs in just this hangar or running through this massive tunnel of hallways, really drives home how huge these ships were and really gives a new sense of scale to the war that TCW’s aesthetics could never really achieve. (Choosing some at random, to show Republic and Separatist capital ships: here and here and here.) - Speaking of Star Wars ships, the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel put out a new By the Numbers video, “every surface vehicle in Star Wars” and it was really cute and fun, but also actually really useful if you ever wanted to know what a particular vehicle was from the movies!  I wanted to take screencaps from it, but because so many of them are whizzing around in the background, it got too blurry to be useful and I’m not going to make 86 gifs for each of them, when the video itself is much more useful. THIS IS THE KIND OF SHIT I NEED WHEN TRYING TO WRITE FIC!  Especially when so much is contradictory between Canon and Legends and some sources aren’t always clear about the difference, looking at you, Legends guidebooks.

34. Ik word deze week een museum blog

Happy Mario Day!

Heh. De extra vakantie is begonnen. Ik heb niets voor uni gedaan, want ik had al veel gedaan als voorbereiding, want deze week hoorde mega druk te zijn. Dus ja, ik heb een mega relaxte dag gehad. Ik had geen wekker gezet, want waarom zou ik? Ik was toch nog best op tijd wakker, namelijk rond half 10. Het is gelukkig niet 13:00.

Ik was weer eens wakker tot ergens laat in de nacht, want nu zat ik na te denken over de politieke structuren in de Avatar wereld. Kijk, ik ben een grote fan van worldbuilding, oké? De Avatar wereld is zeer complex en geweldig gecreëerd. 

Aangezien alles geannuleerd was voor de dag, ging ik maar naar het museum. Ik ging vandaag naar de National Gallery. Het lag dichtbij het Modern Art museum waar ik laatst was.

Deze foto is niet de beste kant van het gebouw:

Deze week is dus inderdaad een Student Art week, dus ik kon gratis naar binnen. Het was een groot museum met kunst vanaf de 13e eeuw t/m de 20e eeuw, dus ik heb in totaal 2 uur rondgelopen.

De ruimte met 1200 - 1600 zat vol met katholieke kunst. Er waren veel kopieën, maar het was wel cool om te bedenken dat mensen vroeger zoveel kunst maakten. Er is ook veel beeldhouwwerk. Beeldhouwwerk lijkt me zo moeilijk. Ik vind de fresco’s ook cool.

Er was dus veel van hetzelfde. Oh, Jezus die sterf. En weer Jezus die sterft. Ah, Jezus die sterft. Kijk, Jezus die sterft. De volgende ruimte en... Jezus die sterft.

Ik heb niet veel foto’s gemaakt, maar de site van de National Gallery laat alles ook zien. Ja, maar het coole van kunst in real life is dat je de details en reliëf kan zien. Buiten de vele katholieke kunststukken, was er ook dit:

In het echt is het mega groot, maar het is een groot fresco met allemaal personages die door skeletten naar een graf worden geleid.

Het was wel awkward, want ik was de enige persoon aanwezig, dus de persoon van het museum hield me de hele tijd in de gaten.

Een deel van het museum werd ook verbonden door dit coole trappenhuis:

De kunst van de 17e eeuw t/m de 19e eeuw lag vespreid en ik kwam er snel achter dat ik de verkeerde volgorde nam, maar dit museum was best wel een doolhof en ik had geen kaart.

Er is dus veel “traditionele” kunst. Een groot contrast met het andere museum. Ik ga niet weer het hele gesprek over kunst starten. Dit is meer de kunst die ik waardeer voor de Aesthetics(TM) en het coolste vond ik gewoon de kunst in de kunst *badum tsss* aka de manier waarop deze kunst is gemaakt. Het is cool om te zien hoe de stijlen en schildersmanieren veranderen en op een bepaald moment kwam de fotografie.

Buiten de permanente collectie, waren er ook nog twee andere exposities. Ik was opzoek naar de expositie over Zoran Mušič en ik raakte helemaal verdwaald. Op een moment kwam zelfs een medewerker me volgen om te zien wat de hell ik aan het doen was. Ik vond uiteindelijk een kaart, helemaal in het Sloveens. Uiteindelijk heb ik maar iemand gevraagd wat ik moest doen. Zoran Mušič is een bekende Sloveense kunstenaar en hij is dus degene die de Dachau tekeningen uit het andere museum heeft gemaakt.

Er was ook nog een hele expositie genaamd Serbian Modernism 1880−1950 en de naam zegt genoeg.

Oh en ik vond toch nog een Engelse plattegrond.

Dit schilderij was zo cool, oké, en toen bleek later dat dit was geschilderd gebaseerd op een foto. Ik vind dit al realistisch genoeg.

Maar ja, om 14:30 ofzo was ik aangekomen en om 16:30 was ik klaar. Ik heb wel echt alles gezien. Daarna nam ik de bus naar de TEDi om duct tape te kopen voor mijn “gordijn”.

Ik heb twee keer door de winkel gelopen en ik kon het nergens vinden. Ik gaf het maar op en toen bleek dat het buiten lag, want er waren ook wat producten buiten. Welp, hooray, ik heb duct tape voor €1!

Het andere grote ding is dat Caroline had voorgesteld om te gaan eten bij de Koreaan. Ik heb ook gevraagd of Sanne mee wilde, want Sanne en ik zijn al geïnteresseerd sinds onze aankomst.

We wilden om 19:00 gaan, maar blijkbaar gaat de Boni dan dicht. Gelukkig zag Sanne dat op tijd, dus we gingen rond 18:00. Dus hoera, eindelijk eten bij Bistro Suwon. Dit restaurant heeft maar 3 gerechten voor studenten per dag, maar dat wisten we al. Meerdere restaurants hebben dat, maar Dabuda en dat Mexicaanse restaurant hebben het hele studentenmenu na een bepaalde tijd.

Ik had “spicy rice cake with fish cake” of iets? Ik had een foto gemaakt. Ja, we kregen ook soep, salade en water erbij. Alles voor €3,30 deze keer.

Helaas waren de stokjes ijzer. Ugh.

Het was best raar? In het begin was de pittigheid zo overheersend, dus ik weet niet of het goed was. Maar toen de pit wegging, was het juist heerlijk en ook lekker zoet? Dus hmmm... De “rice cake” is wel raar. Het zijn plakkerige, rubberige rijst sticks. Ze zijn niet slecht, want het smaakt naar rijst, maar het was raar.

Helaas viel een rice stick in het bord en de rode saus vloog alle kanten op, dus nu moet ik mijn witte shirt weer in de was doen. Barbara wast elke dag (!!!!!), dus ik moet maar kijken wanneer ik tijd heb om te wassen.

Maar ja, het was wel goed en ik wil terug op een donderdag voor een bepaald gerecht.

Dit is tegelijkertijd een geweldige en een vervloekte vraag. Ik praat graag over muziek maar ik zou niet weten waar te beginnen met opsommen wat ik goed vind rip. Ik luister naar veel verschillende genre’s en tijdperken(!!!) en talen, hou er van om een beetje op spotify op ontdekking te gaan naar nieuwe artiesten om te beluisteren. Zoals Gus Dapperton, Clairo, Conan Gray (zijn teksten zijn mega herkenbaar haha) Kevin Abstract en Brockhampton in het algemeen of bekendere alternatieve artiesten als Lana Del Rey, Lorde (ik wacht vol verwachting op een nieuw album, i’m deprived) The 1975 (!!!!), Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood (als ik toch een absolute favoriet zou moeten kiezen, laat het the neighbourhood zijn) en Cigarettes After Sex. Ook Madonna. En Britney! En Angèle en Tamino van België. Natuurlijk mag mijn kleine grote kpop-obsessie niet vergeten: Sunmi, GDragon, BTS, IU, Red Velvet, NCT.... Eigelijk luister ik naar zowat alles, dus stuur me een lied, ik vind het waarschijnlijk wel goed :)

Ik wil enorm graag een keer naar Wenen, en ik heb met iemand afgesproken dat we daar ooit samen heengaan, maar ik weet niet of hij het echt meende toen hij het me beloofde. Voor de rest zou ik graag eens willen rondtrekken in Denemarken, Zweden, Noorwegen, etc. Of een citytripje naar Quebeq en st. Petersburg. Of Zuid-Afrika. Of naar Peru, daar wil ik al lang eens heen. Ooit wil ik ook zeker een keer een rondreis doen langs Shanghai, Hongkong, Peking naar Seoul, Daegu, Busan en Jeju tot Osaka, Nagoya en uiteindelijk Tokio. Klinkt allemaal heel ambitieus maar je moet weten dat ik geen rotte cent heb lol

Julia Kristeva- opstand, wat het ons kan brengen en wat het kan betekenen.

 Their revolt appears to me as the visible side of a reassessment of the religious domain, which is called inner experience. This inner experience continues to assert itself timidly, secretly but yet distinctly below the surface of images, elements of language and tensions of identity. It is this revolt, which goes against the tide of the oppression and fear of unsolvable crisis as well as idealistic enchantment, that I examine in the following pages, which have been translated in numerous languages. Their meaning now comes back to me like an echo sent back by new, unsuspected readers.

 Innerlijke ervaring wordt gekoppeld aan de belangen van opstand. Waarom wordt het gezien als een religieus domein? De innerlijke ervaring zou als schuw en verlegen voordoen. In het geheim maar komt toch duidelijk voor onder de oppervlakte van beelden.  Poetry has always been able to proclaim the desire for free will, by restoring words to memory and thereby extracting a sense of time. In those eras that are vaguely felt to be in decline or at least in a state of suspension, questioning remains the only possible thought: it is an indication of a life that is simply living. Intimacy is not the new prison. Its need for connection might, one day, initiate another politics. Today, mental life knows that it will only be saved if it gives itself the time and space of revolt: to break, to remember, to re-do. From prayer to dialogue, through art and analysis, the crucial event is always the great infinitesimal emancipation: to recommence endlessly. Truths, including scientific ones, may well be illusions, but they have the future in front of them. Maar gaat opstand echt zo ver dat we weten dat we zijn (bestaan), wanneer we in opstand komen? Kan dit ook een stille opstand zijn of moet dit perse gehoord worden? Wanneer is er eigenlijk sprake van opstand? Waarom wordt het gezien als iets noodzakelijks, iets wat nodig is, zodat we de kennis hebben om te bestaan? Slaat dit terug op Hannah Arendt, die wil dat iedereen het systeem bevraagt. Indien je het systeem niet bevraagt, kom je niet in opstand en kun je volgens Arendt niet herboren worden. Misschien is dit principe noodzakelijk om te beseffen dat we bestaan en dus kan de citaat van Alber Camus hier wel toegepast worden. “I revolt, therefore we are.” Opstand kan natuurlijk van individueel inititatief ondernomen worden, toch heeft dit gevolgen voor ons allemaal, want we komen niet alleen in opstand voor onszelf en onze individuele rechten. Er zullen namelijk meerdere mensen, organismen in dezelfde staat zich bevinden, zoals de opstander schets. Daarom lijkt het naar mijn opinie dus te kloppen dat Albert Camus zegt. “I revolt, therefore we are”, in plaats van “I revolt, therefore I am”.

An essential ingredient of European culture — a culture fashioned by doubt and critique — is losing its moral and aesthetic significance. When it exists, it is marginalized as an ornamental alibi tolerated by the society of the spectacle, when it is not simply engulfed and made impossible by “entertainment culture,” “performance culture,” and show-business culture” (culture-show). The use of Anglicisms here conveys the dynamics at work.

 Hier laat Julia zien dat het beter is om alsnog in stilte een minimalistische opstander te zijn. Het zal niet veel zijn, maar het is beter dan een punt te bereiken, waarin je niet meer de ruimte ontvangt om terug te keren. Zowel voor je positie als mens, maar ook de omstandigheden die hierop betrekking hebben. Het laat ook zien dat de feministische de weg vonden tussen de opstand en aan het voldoen van de eisen die de samenleving toch voor ze had destijds. Ze nemen de macht terug over eigen lichaam, tegelijkertijd zorgen ze er wel voor dat de kinderen die ze hebben ontvangen, zullen leven in de beste condities. Iets wat wel van ze verwacht wordt, maar ze door (minimale) opstand toch verder weten te brengen dan ooit gedacht. Dit laat wederom zien, dat je niet moet toegeven aan het systeem. Ondanks dat er bepaalde verwachtingen centraal staan, kun je alsnog inzet tonen, ook al doe je dit maar door minimale opstand, je moet het systeem altijd kunnen bekritiseren, want alleen dan kun je herboren worden en dus zijn.
